“Jadeite! Don't underestimate the abilities of us girls! We can do a lot more then just cry you know! And now you're finally gonna pay for your countless evil deeds! I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Fight to the Finish")

Having been worn out with his repeated failures, Queen Beryl gives Jadeite his final chance to redeem himself by destroying the Sailor Guardians. To pull this off, he challenges them to a "fight to the finish" or all of Tokyo will suffer his wrath.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • 13 Is Unlucky: For Jadeite it is. This is the 13th episode of the series, and it features him getting run over by a plane before he's then encased in crystal for eternity.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • The DIC version was nicer to Jadeite. His sexism is considerably downplayed. He still wants to destroy the Sailor Scouts, but is more on principle and has nothing to do with them being girls.
    • The Japanese version and the DiC dub both have Sailor Mars telling Sailor Moon that there are gorillas prettier than she is. The Viz dub has Mars instead saying Sailor Moon's nose is more like a thumbtack.
  • And I Must Scream: Jadeite is sentenced to the Eternal Sleep which involves him being encased in a block of crystal and cast off to the darkest corners of the Dark Kingdom, never to be found again.
  • Bathos: Jadeite reveals that he now knows the Guardian Trio's secret identities and intends to kill them. Fortunately, Moon and Mars make the time to argue about who of the two is more beautiful.
  • Birds of a Feather: Mamoru insults Usagi by claiming that whoever her crush is must be just as big of an air-headed loser as her.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Jadeite gets run over by a plane with little as so much as a scratch. He still shows hurt when he returns to the Dark Kingdom, though.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Rei and Ami have different but valid points about how to handle Jadeite's challenge. Rei insists on facing him directly to not only protect Tokyo but to vanquish the fiend who's been terrorizing them for months. Ami however, wants to play it safe by coming up with a strategy expecting it to be a trap.
  • Capture and Replicate: Jadeite puts the human officers to sleep and then creates an army of clay golems to take their place.
  • Car Fu: Jadeite's last attack is using airplanes to run over the Sailor Guardians. Mars turns the attack on him and has the planes head for him instead.
  • Cassandra Truth: Queen Beryl writes off Jadeite's knowledge of the Guardians' true identities as a pitiful excuse to be spared.
  • Collateral Damage: Defied. Mars suggests using her flames to destroy the planes, before Luna tells her it will be a very hefty bill the girls will have to pay for if she does.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Umino believes that Jadeite was an alien who's trying to warn humanity to save it's planet before it's too late.
  • Cruel Mercy: Jadeite is worried about suffering You Have Failed Me, but it's Beryl threatening the Eternal Sleep punishment that truly unnerves him. The rest of the court is similarly disturbed, especially when seeing it occur. As Beryl demonstrates, mere death would've been merciful for someone who failed so consistently.
  • Death by Irony: Jadeite openly shows how little he thinks of women and how he's better then them. In the end, he meets his death at the hands of his woman boss Beryl.
  • Death by Secret Identity: Jadeite saw Usagi, Ami, and Rei transform and boasts he now knows who they really are. After losing, he returns to face Queen Beryl in the hopes that this knowledge will convince her to spare him. She doesn't.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Gender flipped with Tuxedo Mask and Jadeite, the only two action dudes amongst a cast of badass ladies.
  • Disney Death: Tuxedo Mask ends up fighting Jadeite but falls into the ocean without resurfacing. After the big fight, he appears in front of the girls.
  • Dramatic Irony: Mamoru believes that whoever loves or admires Usagi must be a big loser. Little does he know that he will be that very loser in the future.
  • The Dreaded: All of Queen Beryl's court reacts in shock and terror over the punishment of Eternal Sleep.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Usagi says it's too dangerous for anyone to go to the airport. She's quite irritated that, in response to her saying something completely rational, people think she's sick and should go to the nearest bed.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Usagi is okay with people insulting her, but she can't stand the thought of someone insulting her crush Motoki.
    • The Sailor Guardians are rightfully offended when Jadeite expresses his sexist beliefs.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Jadeite is not killed by Queen Beryl, though he probably wish he was. Instead he gets Eternal Sleep, frozen in a block of crystal and cast into darkness.
  • From Bad to Worse: Jadeite is outsmarted by the Sailor Guardians, gets ran over by a plane, and he returns to the Dark Kingdom battered and bruised to face a furious Queen Beryl, who puts him into Eternal Sleep.
  • Hero Insurance: Luna stops Mars from destroying the airplanes by saying she and her friends could never be able to pay back the damages done.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Jadeite ends up defeated after Sailor Mars uses her paper talisman to direct his planes against him.
  • I Have Your Wife: Jadeite says the Guardians better show up at the airport to face him or else he'll burn the city to the ground, killing everyone they hold dear and countless others.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: The Guardian Trio decide to strike back to take down Jadeite for being an outdated, misogynistic idiot.
  • Make an Example of Them: Beryl uses Jadeite's punishment as a warning to her court on how useless subordinates will be tossed aside without mercy.
Queen Beryl(DiC): Let Jadeite's fate be a warning to all of you!
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Usagi's classmates and teacher all react with shock when she sensibly tells them to avoid the airport in case something dangerous happens. Haruna especially looks more surprised than anyone.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • Usagi's romantic stargazing fantasy is abruptly cut when Jadeite appears in the sky and makes his declaration of war.
    • While discussing their options, Rei insists they charge in, while Ami says they need a plan. When asked what she thinks, Usagi appears quite serious and thoughtful before sheepishly admitting she's so scared that she doesn't want to go at all.
  • No Sympathy: When Jadeite is put into his Eternal Sleep, his comrades just debase him.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Jadeite is disposed of by Queen Beryl and immediately assigns Nephrite as his replacement.
Nephrite: Jadeite was incompetent, but you can count on me.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse:
    • Beryl provides Jadeite with one last opportunity to destroy the Sailor Guardians. If he fails to do so, then he'll be forced to endure an eternal sleep. He fails.
    • Jadeite's hologram orders the Sailor Guardians to meet him in Haneda Airport to face him in battle. Failure to appear will result in him burning Tokyo to the ground.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Usagi and Mamoru are not in anyway happy to run into each other again in public.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Usagi's entourage and teacher are dumbfounded when she openly agrees with her bore of a teacher's statement of not going to the airport on the grounds of it being too dangerous for any of them. Miss Haruna even worries that she's having a fever.
  • Police Are Useless: Justified. The piggies assigned to watch over Haneda Airport are easily put to sleep by Jadeite's otherwordly magic.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Miss Haruna is rightfully against her students going to the airport and scolds them for suggesting such an idea.
  • Shamed by a Mob: Mamoru realizes too late he just made Usagi cry in public when the people around him start scolding him for driving Usagi to tears.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Jadeite says their time is finally up, Usagi and Rei instead get into an argument over which one of them is more beautiful. It takes Ami interjecting for them to focus on what's important.
  • Spotting the Thread: Ami realizes that something is off about the policemen chasing them. So she turns into Sailor Mercury and discovers through her supercomputer that they're not real humans.
  • Stargazing Scene: Usagi's first scene is her looking at the constellations and imagining her crushes Motoki and Tuxedo Mask.
  • Straw Misogynist: Jadeite laughs at the girls for needing to rely on Tuxedo Mask to save them and goes on to call all women "useless creatures".
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Mamoru learns that a grown man making a middle school girl cry in public will result in a negative crowd reaction.
    • Luna immediately warns the Sailor Guardians about how much it would cost if they destroy the plane Jadeite's controlling.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: In the DiC version, when Jadeite sends the planes at the girls, Mercury comes up with a simple but effective plan.
Sailor Moon: Oh no! What do we do?
Sailor Mercury: There's only one way.
    Moon & Mars: How?
Sailor Mercury: Run for your lives!
  • Take That!: When they're ambushed by a group of policemen, Usagi openly questions why their government would allow the police to attack innocent people.
  • Taking a Third Option: Rei wants to face Jadeite and defeat him once and for all. Ami wants to come up with a plan before walking in out of concern that he'll create a trap for them. Usagi's response?
  • Thrill Seeker: Usagi's friends and several background characters suggest going to Haneda Airport to check out the showdown.
  • Understatement: The episode Precap of the DiC version says that Jadeite is having "a really bad day". That really doesn't cover half of it.
  • Villain Ball:
    • Jadeite ushers his challenge to the Sailor Guardians to where everyone can hear it.
    • Beryl is so outraged about Jadeite once again failing that she doesn't even want to hear talk of him now knowing the identities of the Sailor Guardians.
  • Wham Episode: Jadeite is defeated once and for all, and Nephrite is assigned to replace him.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The episode begins with Jadeite's trial and Queen Beryl delivering her fatal ultimatum.
  • Villainous Demotivator: Averted. In response to witnessing Jadeite's horrific fate, Nephrite simply calls him incompetent and expresses no concern about having to take over from here.
  • You Are in Command Now: Shortly after disposing of Jadeite, Queen Beryl appoints Nephrite as her new commander.
  • You Have Failed Me: Queen Beryl has had enough of Jadeite's failures and decides to get rid of him via Eternal Sleep.
  • You Monster!: Luna says this to Jadeite after seeing his vision of Tokyo's incineration.

The evil Jadeite is having a really bad day. He must square off against Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Mars! An unbeatable combination! Will Jadeite finally meet his match against Tuxedo Mask? It's going be fantastic! Be right back!
