I'm single because I don't need anyone to ruin my life. I'm ruining it perfectly on my own.

“It's not fair that you're only targeting the energy of couples that are in love. Don't you feel sorry for leaving out the girls without boyfriends? I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Cruise Blues")

When Rei decides to take Ami on a fabulous cruise trip to find potential boyfriends, Usagi decides to sneak aboard hoping to find some romance of her own. Unbeknownst to the girls, however, is that the cruise is another trap created by Jadeite and a high-ranking youma who's attracted to him.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Thetis loves Jadeite and openly expresses her feelings for him but is constantly rejected by him.
  • Alone Among the Couples: To Rei and Ami's embarrassment, they're the only girls on the ship who aren't in a relationship.
  • Bifauxnen: Usagi uses the Disguise Pen to turn into a photographer.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Cornered, Ami and Rei resist transforming out of fear of the Dark Kingdom learning their identities, but Sailor Moon's arrival provides the needed distraction.
  • Big Eater: Rei pigs out during dinner out of anger that she and Ami haven't been able to find single guys, arguing she needs to get something worthwhile out of the cruise. In the DiC dub, the context's changed to her claiming "salt air makes her hungry" while it's emphasized she ate seven pork chops.
    Amy: People are staring!
Raye: They've been staring all night! Just 'cuz we're single!
  • Cassandra Truth: Jadeite tries to excuse his actions by saying that Thetis organized his latest plot. But Beryl insists on punishing him for allowing her precious subordinate to die and for all the trouble he's given her these past few months.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: As Jadeite notes, Thetis does an excellent job of stealing energy from the couples but can't do so for any random single person that happens to be in the crowd. The first dub has her explain that she could modify her crystal ball to drain Amy and Raye, but that would result in them spending more energy than they'd have.
  • Cruise Episode: The Sailor Guardians go on a cruise which is also the theme for Jadeite's newest scheme.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Rei admits that she assumed that there would be some single guys for her and Ami to hit on rather then the guys being completely taken.
  • Dirty Coward: The DiC dub changes the context of Jadeite leaving from him being pulled away by Queen Beryl to him bailing as soon as the Sailor Scouts confront him.
  • The Drag-Along: Ami figuratively and literally at one point
  • Dramatic Irony: Usagi ends up having a crush on Jadeite when he's disguised as the ship's captain.
  • Elite Mooks: Zigzagged with the Deep Sea Youma: Thetis. She's a monster who works directly under Queen Beryl, is significantly strong when it comes to controlling water, and her death is enough to to push Beryl to effectively punish Jadeite. However, she's easily beaten like a common youma when the Sailor Guardians use their powers against her.
  • Glamour: Thetis used her water magic to turn a rusted, battered boat into a fabulous cruise-liner.
  • Hammerspace: When the magic on the ship wears off and everyone is waiting to be rescued by the coast guard, Ami inexplicably pulls a book out of nowhere while Rei and Usagi argue about Tuxedo Mask.
  • Human Hummingbird: Usagi zooms out of the classroom the second Umino tells her that there's a ticket giveaway at the market.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Rei criticizes Usagi for wanting to go on a romantic cruise claiming that they shouldn't be wasting their time on "useless nonsense". Two seconds later, she goes to the booth asking for a shot at the tickets.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Luna notices that something is wrong when she realizes that the engine room is far too quiet.
  • Jabba Table Manners: Rei decides to forgo dinner etiquette by going all out on her luxury steak entry.
Ami: Uh, Rei, don't you think you could eat just a little bit quieter?
Rei: Don't tell me what to do! Gotta take advantage of this trip somehow! Who needs boyfriends?!
  • Just a Kid: Umino won tickets to the cruise but gave them away citing that he's a minor so he wouldn't be allowed to go alone.
  • Making a Splash: Thetis can manipulate large amounts of water to attack her opponents and even create humanoid minions.
  • Mundane Utility: Usagi uses her Disguise Pen to ensure she can get aboard the ship. Luna's attempt to point out that's not what the device is for doesn't get her anywhere.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: A disguised Jadeite feels uncomfortable when he's around Usagi, who's disguised as a photographer.
  • Number of the Beast: Umino brags that the cruise ship can carry 666 passengers.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ami, upon recognizing Jadeite.
  • On the Rebound: Rei tries to exploit this by suggesting that she and Ami watch out for potential break ups so they can swoop in to the unsuspecting guys. Ami laments in the Viz dub that she would rather be at home memorizing her dictionary.
  • Properly Paranoid: While observing them through a porthole, Luna immediately suspects the ship's captain and first mate of being monsters in disguise.
  • Rhyming Title: "Cruise Blues" in the DiC dub.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: Rei uses her psychic intuition to win the cruise tickets.
  • Spanner in the Works: All three girls become this as they make their way into the boat without even realizing it's a Dark Kingdom plot. But Rei and Ami get a special shout out since Thetis was only targeting romantic couples, leaving the single and lonely duo untouched.
  • Time Skip: According to Naru, the tickets to the cruise have been sold out for a month, meaning it was that long since Thetis made her proposal to Jadeite.
  • Troll: Usagi can't help but get in a good shot at Rei about not having a boyfriend after all the grief Rei gave her earlier.
Sailor Moon: How dare you only attack couples! What about those poor girls who don't have boyfriends?
    Rei: What?!
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Thetis had good intentions of helping Jadeite with his energy stealing mission. But her going behind her master's back and being killed in the process would accelerate Queen Beryl's decision to punish Jadeite.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The episode starts with Thetis proposing an energy harvesting operation of her own design to Jadeite.
  • Villainous Rescue: Jadeite was about to personally take on the three Sailor Guardians, only to be pulled away by an angry Queen Beryl.
  • You Keep Telling Yourself That: When questioned why they're on a cruise for couples, Rei and Ami assert they could absolutely have boyfriends if they really wanted them. Thetis scoffs at such a claim before ordering the mooks to deal with the two of them.

It was supposed to be a dream vacation on the coolest cruise ship...but it turns into a really bad trip when the evil servants of the Negaverse show up! The Sailor Scouts will be right back! So stick around!
