Tropes

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Max keeps playing with a chemistry set scale, making Harry tell him to stop and return to their mission of finding his Doomsday Device.
  • Caught on Tape: Max learns that Lisa stole his piece of Harry's spaceship because he had set up a security camera in his room.
  • Cliffhanger: Harry retrieves his Doomsday Device from the glacier, only for him, D'arcy, and Asta to fall into a crevice that opens underneath them.
  • Cliffhanger Copout: It turns out rather than the government agents, the car pulling up to Harry is Isabelle angry about his lying to her.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: After an octopus chats a bit with Harry, he realizes he forgot to ask Harry for help to break him and all the other octopuses in the Sushi bar out. As Harry leaves, the octopus regretfully mourns "Crap! Shoulda opened with that!"
  • A Crack in the Ice: Harry, Asta, and D'arcy fall down a crevasse in the glacier.
  • Cue the Billiard Shot: A scene with D'arcy and Asta at the pub opens with a billiard shot.
  • Do Wrong, Right: Harry being distraught over Isabelle leaving (because he hurt her feelings first) starts binge-playing Galaga all day and taking pills. Asta and D'arcy take notice and ask him to quit pills and Galaga and join them on a night of smoking pot instead.
  • Dream Within a Dream: Harry has a nightmare about the real Harry coming back from the dead. He wakes up relieved only to find that zombie Harry is still in the room with him. Then he wakes up again.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Harry after he crushes Isabelle's feelings and damages their marriage beyond repair. When drugs and alcohol don't work, he just binge-plays Galaga all day gleefully killing aliens in the town's local bowling alley. Asta and D'arcy take notice and pull Harry out (and get him to smoke pot instead).
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Harry drunkenly pees in Max's bed. Max is grossed out and demands Harry leave.
  • Enemy Mine: Harry and Max work together when their truce didn't work out too well and Harry enlists Max's help in tracking down his ship and device using the green glow. Harry is also flat broke and can't afford groceries, so he asks Max to tell his mother to buy popcorn for him.
  • Epic Fail: Harry applying for jobs goes like this. He tried to get a job at a bowling alley, but according to Judy her boss said Harry was overqualified for mentioning on his resume he served as a doctor in medicine who has a "PTSD from Stamford".
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jimmy is an abusive jerk who had no qualms about stealing Sam's prescription pad and sell it to janitor at the high school for a quick buck, but he is genuinely shocked to learn the janitor then used the pad to get drugs to sell to children. When informed about this fact, he comes clean and points the sherriff and deputy to the janitor.
  • False Friend: Harry starts using Max on the pretense that Max is helping him find his "radio" (actually a green glowing orb that will disintegrate all of humanity). Max however genuinely started to treat Harry as a friend.
  • I Lied: Harry revealed he never kept on keeping his end of the truce with Max, he was going to throw the boy in Georgia and told his parents he can rot in there. And the truce can't be enforced because there's nothing Max can do to retaliate against Harry if he's locked up in a guarded institution.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: The octopus is voiced by Nathan Fillion, who worked with Alan Tudyk on Firefly.
  • Marijuana Is LSD: After smoking pot together, the girls think that Harry is "so fried" because he's trying to communicate with the octopus in the fishtank. Subverted in that he wasn't actually hallucinating, as he really could talk to his octopus relation.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Harry refuses to grow a mustache for this particular reason. But later on, he dons a fake one anyways only for Max to tell him to take it off because of this reason claiming he's known an innocent guy who got locked away just for looking like that.
  • Octopoid Aliens: Harry talks telepathically with an octopus giving him a summary of his time on Earth. It turns out octopuses are aliens, but landed on Earth because a meteor shower threw the ancestors of octopuses off-course and land right into the oceans of Precambrian Earth.
  • Perp Sweating: The sheriff shines his desk lamp into Jimmy's face when interrogating him about the murder at the hospital.
  • Precision F-Strike: The octopus tells off Harry, "I'm stuck in a fucking aquarium!" when Harry asks him to keep a secret.
  • Rage Quit: So much so it could be a Drinking Game.
    • Isabelle has enough of Harry's lies and mistreatment of her and even calling her a burden on his personal space so she quits the relationship and goes back to New York.
    • Harry upon knowing since the end of the previous episode that his spaceship got stolen from where he had parked it under a snowy mountain and right into a guarded military base (Area 51) gives up and loses hope on finding his Doomsday Device which he needs to kill off the armed men guarding his own ship from him. He pounds his fists on the snow a few times and goes to the diner to look for jobs.
    • Deputy Liv also quits her job after she has had enough of Sheriff Mike's jerkassery being such an asshole to her all the time especially by considering her even less important than of his dog Cletus who is out sick. Liv squishes (but still takes) the burger Mike ordered for Cletus as she reaches her Rage Breaking Point when Mike argues with her about who gets to read Miranda rights to the drug dealer they just arrested.
  • Soul-Sucking Retail Job: Harry after figuring out that the US Government must have captured his ship and put it in a facility just praying he'll wander into the facility so they can capture him next, Harry gives up his search for his device, downs some alcohol and goes to the diner looking for jobs deciding he's stuck on Earth in human form until the day he dies. One of those jobs he dreadfully imagines is him being a coffee barista serving over-complicated coffee orders. He seems to pass on that in favor of becoming a tattoo artist - which he gets so excited about (especially with the prospect of winning over D'arcy's affection) that he gets lost in the moment right until Max pulls him back to the real world.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: Deputy Baker gets fed up with Sheriff Thompson's jerkassery and Rage Quits the police force altogether.
  • Trespassing to Talk: Harry uninvitedly sneaks into Max's bedroom (again) to talk about a collaboration.
