Hexside manages to strike back against Glandus; Eda ends up confronting her past; Gus learns some shocking news.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Unlike in canon, here the Owl Beast is revealed to have a family that it lost.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Gus' Power Incontinence is displayed before the events of "Labyrinth Runners".
  • Always Someone Better:
    • A twofold case regarding Prof. Snope. No matter how powerful Prof. Blanc is, he was never a match for Snope, who defeats him in a battle using their abominations while half-asleep. He credits it to Alador being the superior teacher to Blanc.
    • Emily may be powerful enough to create and sustain multiple school-wide illusions, but she falls victim to Mind Rape through Gus' illusion magic after trying to convince Gus that his father abandoned him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Dog helps Hexside's healers with their injured students to protect Cat, and she plays the Little Sister variant by rushing to Dog's aide after Tito knocks him out.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Amity's shadow gets her out of Miss Heinous' grasp and distracts the Fae before supposedly teleporting her away.
    • Mai arrives at Hexside to save the Baby Class before they're overrun.
    • The League of Witches That Helps (L.O.W.T.H.) saves Felicia from the pack of Glandus students chasing her.
  • Blood Knight: Maya. Upon surfacing, she shoves Asi's knife down his snout and goes on to brutally injure 30 other Glandus students.
  • Break Them by Talking: Emily tries this on Gus, telling him that she knows his father hasn't been home for a while and he's been staying with the Parks with the intent of "sympathizing" with Gus as she believes Perry abandoned him and is no better than her parents or the Clawthornes and telling him Luz is probably dead by now. She ends up triggering Gus' Power Incontinence and getting severely traumatized.
  • Bully Brutality
  • The Bus Came Back: Dog finally makes his grand return after a mention back in "Escape", volunteering his services to Hexside in the war.
  • Call-Back:
    • Amity dispells the illusion she's experiencing with the exact same move as when she faced Belos in "The Rescue". Emily ends up using this tactic as well.
    • Gus mentions Amity disowning her family after seeing Cooker use a Blight Industries weapon.
    • Horace brings up Boscha framing Luz and humans in general as witch hunters back in "Everything's Gone Wrong".
    • Cat recounts her time as Boscha's faceless lackey and how she became more when lecturing Elliot about blindly following someone else's lead.
  • The Cameo:
    • Raine appears as a teenager back when Eda and Angel lived in Latissa and is shown as a shadow along with Dell and Angel.
    • Beck and Samwitch appear in Simon's memory the day before.
  • Casting a Shadow: The Haitian-masked woman summons shadows to infiltrate the locked-down Owl House, shaping them as people Eda hurt in the past to make her panic.
  • The Cavalry: Once Willow learns Luz and Amity headed straight into a trap, she deploys Skara and Viney to Glandus High on Puddles to help them.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Asi makes it clear he's enjoying making Luz squirm for causing the events that led to his mother's death by cutting her while she's strapped to his operating table.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Amity's ability to differentiate illusions based on shadows is shown again.
    • Eve still has Philip's diary and she's been trying to use it to solve the mystery of the locket she found in "Have a Little Hex with my Friends".
    • As mentioned in the Order's meeting, Oberon abolished all responsibility for the Coachman's actions when he joined them.
    • Tito's hatred of mice resurfaces when he sees Cat's palisman.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Prof. Snope really shows Prof. Blanc that he's the better Abomination magic user when he effortlessly defeats him in combat.
    • Played With towards Mattholomule: he knows he'd experience this if he takes on Cain, so he surrenders. Cain still knocks Matt out by backhanding him.
    • Willow takes out the Rumblers, the Shovelers and plenty of Glandus Constructors on her own.
    • Tito dodges all of Dog's attacks before kicking him into a wall, knocking him out.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Downplayed. Although focus on the main cast was evenly distributed throughout the "Glandus War" arc, Eda gets a bit more than everyone else here thanks to the Flashback B-Plot.
  • Death of a Child: Angel died when she was fourteen and it lingered over Eda for years.
  • Demonic Possession: Right before Asi pulls out Luz's eye, Maya takes control of her body and breaks free of their restraints, injures Asi and proceeds to build up a body count.
  • Dirty Coward: Willow considers Grease one for trying to attack her while her back is turned.
  • Distant Prologue: The first scene occurs 30 years ago, back when Eda and Angel first started living together in the Demon Realm.
  • Elite Agents Above the Law: According to Oberon, the Order has to follow multiple rules yet the Loa and the Travelers don't have to adhere to such guidelines.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Barcus once again plays this role, as his aura-reading skills helps him warn his friends that some of the students they're hiding with are illusionists from Glandus. Technically, this also applies to Skara, whose werewolf instincts assist them as well.
  • Eye Color Change: To show that Maya's in control, Luz's eyes glow orange.
  • Eye Scream: Asi, seeing that any cut he gives Luz instantly heals, decides to cut out her eye and see if it grows back. This leads to the aforementioned Eye Color Change and Demonic Possession.
  • Fantastic Racism: It turns out that the Gates family don't consider witches equal beings to humans, Abigail and her father having no problem with killing Eda when she was just a teenager.
  • Flashback: While unconscious, Simon dreams back to the previous day when Beck informs him of Cain being at St. Epiderm and he talks with his father about his brother's behavior.
  • Flashback B-Plot: Portions of the chapter are dedicated to backtracking Eda's past after being cursed; mauling her father, her breakup with Raine, the Owl Beast accidentally killing Angel, the Beast saving Donna from certain death, and it being turned into a scroll by the Collector.
  • Foreshadowing: That voice Angel claims to have heard, it's going to play a greater role down the line.
  • Freak Out:
    • Eda goes into a panic attack when the shadows invading her home take the forms of people she's hurt, blacking out as a result.
    • Tito starts to teeter on the verge of one the second he spots Cat's mouse palisman on her head.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The superhero group, the League of Witches That Helps, is also known as "L.O.W.T.H."
  • The Ghost: Mushu is mentioned by the Monkey King.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Maya's possession results in Luz's eyes glowing a burning orange that signifies she's gonna blaze through everyone who confronts her.
  • Groin Attack: The Glandus student who breaks a chair over Maya is lifted off the ground by his neck and given one of these.
  • Hates Being Touched: Maya seems to have as much of a problem with being forcibly touched as Luz does.
  • Hearing Voices: Angel hears one that scares her so bad, she begs Eda to take her back to the Human Realm.
  • The Heart: The Cerberus sisters tell Eve that this is her role in the Shadowy Secret Expozers as her determination inspires them to never give up, something remarkably true for her since she never does.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Remembering his conversation with his father about getting through to Cain, Simon wakes up from his knockout and gets back up with Flint's encouragement.
  • Hidden Depths: The Cerberus sisters, who are seen as a single being, pride being individuals: Cyndi likes poetry slams, Patty can play the keyboard and reads untamed romance novels, and Blondie has a rock collection.
  • Hide Your Children:
    • King, Camila and Hooty hide down in the Owl House's basement while protecting Levi's sister.
    • Dr. Spott of Hexside's General Studies barricades the Baby Class in a bunker to keep them out of harm's way.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: By trying to turn Gus against his father as well as Luz, then admitting she wants to imprison and keep Amity as her pet once the war's over, Emily sets up her punishment at Gus' hands.
  • Human Pet: "Witch" variant. Emily intends to keep Amity as a pet when the war ends; this is what sets off Gus' inner power.
  • Hypocrite: Emily was already one for mocking Gus because he's an illusionist when she knew Glandus had a track full of them and admitted they were useful for giving her school an edge (while continuing to mock him here), and she proves to be an even bigger one as it's revealed that she's an illusionist, too.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Nina impales Boscha in her stomach with her claws, a move she earnestly regrets as it was an accident.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Eda makes peace with the Owl Beast when she sees how the curse affects both of them and gains her harpy form.
    • Mattholomule learns illusion magic in addition to his construction magic.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz meets Asi and is informed of his connection to Ms. Torigore.
    • Several of Hexside's fighters discover that Glandus High has illusion track students and are informed of Celine, Dusty and Simon's defeats.
    • Amity meets Miss Heinous and Maya for the first time. She also sees her shadow moving, but assumes it's Puck's.
    • Boscha learns that Hunter's a powerless witch. Soon after, she and Gus learn about Horace's betrayal.
    • Everyone on the Order wasn't aware of Oberon creating the Mewmans or the Magic High Commission crystallizing Eclipsa and Globgor while replacing their daughter as Princess of Mewni until Oberon and Rhombulous themselves reveal the other's actions.
    • Emily informs Gus of what she did to Luz last chapter and that she left her with Asi.
    • Lilith sees Angel for the first time, albeit represented by a shadow.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: After seeing Eda transform into the Owl Beast, the previous Director Gates told his soldiers to shoot her, calling her "it".
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After getting away with everything she's done since vandalizing the Owl House up to this point, karma bites Emily hard in the ass when her attempt to turn Gus against those he cares about backfires on her big time in the form of a Mind Rape.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Plenty of members in Glandus' ranks get paid back for everything so far:
    • The illusionists are taken down by Willow, Viney, Barcus, Skara, Edric and Eileen thanks to Barcus and Skara's abilities to sniff them out.
    • While fighting Gus and Boscha, Cooker and Horace take each other out with Cooker getting knocked out by a rock while Horace gets his face melted off.
    • Upon taking possession of Luz's body and getting free, Maya shoves Asi's knife down his snout for trying to dissect her host. She then injures 30 Glandus students who attack her.
    • The Glandus potions teacher and several others are turned into paintings by Ms. Traveler.
    • Prof. Snope bests Blanc in combat and punches him so hard, he flies into a wall and is knocked unconscious.
    • The pack of Glandus students that try to hurt Mattholomule get trapped with the Choosy Hat, which proceeds to attack them.
    • The student who tried to attack the Baby Class is downed by Mai with a wrench.
    • Prof. Redback defeats Prof. Serkis and slams his unconscious body repeatedly until Jane calms him down.
    • L.O.W.T.H. saves Felicia when they subdue her chasers.
    • The Rumbler brothers, the Shovelers and several Construction students are defeated at Willow's hands.
    • And last but definitely not least, Emily is forced to relive her more traumatic memories after her parents disappeared when she tries to break Gus' faith in his family and friends.
  • The Leader: Moose and Scabrina take command of the Baby Class, using the titles of "commander" and "lieutenant", respectively.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While Amity finally learns about her Living Shadow, she believes it's Puck's. She and everyone else still don't know that Puck's shadow was destroyed to bring Camila back to the world of the living.
  • Master of Illusion: Emily is revealed to be a very high-level illusionist, creating illusions of Amity's muggers to torment her while at the same time, altering the entirety of Glandus' interior to change the placements of the exits.
  • Motive Rant
  • Multi-Part Episode: Part 2 of the "Glandus War" 4-parter.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Abigail is horrified when Angel is killed by the Owl Beast, saying she didn't want for that to happen when she called in her father to kill Eda.
    • Nina shows genuine panic after she loses control of her beast instincts and guts Boscha's stomach by accident.
  • Nasal Trauma: Maya shoves Asi's knife down his snout as payback for cutting Luz and threatening the both of them.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: The moment Maya takes over, Luz's cambion form gets more than a few cosmetic changes: namely, her wings become dexterous due to now being claws.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The illusionist who brags about Luz and Amity being doomed pretty much tells Willow that Emily's still at Glandus, allowing her to dispatch Skara and Viney to give them backup.
  • The Nose Knows: Thanks to her werewolf senses, Skara can sniff out which of Glandus' illusion track students are real and which are illusion clones which helps everyone take them down.
  • No-Sell: A Glandus student tries to down Maya by breaking a chair over her. She grabs him completely unfazed.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Ms. Traveler single-handedly defeats every Glandus teacher that battles her and turns them into paintings.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Somehow Amity teleports away while Ms. Heinous' back is turned.
  • Passing the Torch: It's implied that Abigail grew up to succeed her father, the previous Director Gates, in running his organization.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • To some sections of "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door"; The Owl Beast is shown to have had a mate and babies that were captured by the Collector, and Eda gains her harpy form before King gains his sonic power.
    • Glossaryck was not the one who gave human settlers that became the first Mewmans the Royal magic wand. This means the Stable Time Loop that he created doesn't exist.
    • Gus knocks out an skilled illusionist with their own memories weeks before the events of "Labyrinth Runners" occur.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Gus gives one to Horace as they fight in Glandus, summing up his overall attitude towards him and Luz:
Luz is guilty of nothing besides protecting her friends! You've been an asshole long before Luz showed up to save my skin, so really, your problem with Luz is that she made you feel weak, since she easily puts you down like the rat you are!
    • Willow also gives one to Cain regarding what he's done and allowed those from his school to do:
      Willow: You're Simon's brother?
      Cain: (proudly) Yes, I am.
Willow: And yet you call yourself a Saltstar? (Cain pauses) How can you tolerate this? The Saltstars are all about honor, but there's nothing "honorable" about allowing people around you to get hurt. I heard about what your friends did to Boscha. You're all nothing but bullies...I don't think you deserve to be called a Saltstar.
  • Rejected Apology: Luz genuinely attempts to apologize to Asi for Ms. Torigore's death, but he refuses it, saying Luz doesn't get to feel sorry for what she did.
  • The Reveal:
    • Emily's an illusionist, having had to hide her true magical capabilities so she could last in Glandus. She's so powerful, she can cast illusions all over the school to alter the layout. And as it turns out Emily never sprung Bangles, Zepher, and Brian from the Conformatorium; they were also illusions created to mess with Amity.
    • Eda and Angel lived in Latissa for a week, with Angel being the reason Eda started becoming skilled as a scam artist. Angel asked to return to Earth when she heard a strange voice and they came back to Abigail having called in her father's organization to kill Eda since they didn't consider witches people. During a fight between Angel and Abigail, the Owl Beast accidentally killed Angel after getting the girls mixed up.
    • The Owl Beast saved Donna from being killed by a werewolf and were-leopard that killed her parents when she was a baby and dropped her off at Scooter Crane's orphanage.
    • Asi's confirmed to be Ms. Torigore's son and he reveals to Luz that after the Choosy Hat incident, a mix-up on the part of the Emperor's Coven resulted in his mother being sent to a slaughterhouse instead of a retirement farm.
      • On top of that, Asi wanted to study in abominations; his mother wanted him to follow in her footsteps. He only dedicated himself to it so he could use it to get revenge on Luz when he got the chance.
    • Maya's soul is able to take control of Luz's body.
    • Prof. Snope was once taught by Prof. Blanc.
    • The Loa and the Traveler family don't follow the rules that the Order has in place.
    • Oberon created the Mewman race, giving them the Royal Magic Wand and starting the Butterfly family line.
      • Mewni was pulled into the Nightmare Realm.
    • Elliot witnessed Horace's meeting with Emily the previous night.
    • Dog is revealed to be a Bard.
    • Moose and Scabrina are revealed to be students in Hexside's Baby Class.
    • Barcus has a raccoon palisman while Eileen's is a newt.
  • Sadist: Asi is shown to be a Psycho Knife Nut who takes a lot of enjoyment in cutting Luz in the name of vengeance, going as far as to try cutting out her eyes.
  • Saying Too Much: While being interrogated, one of Glandus' illusionists accidentally reveals that Emily is not at Hexside and Luz and Amity going to Glandus was part of her plan.
  • Say My Name: Skara shouts Boscha's name when she and Viney see her injured at Nina's hands.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Several Glandus students run away from Ms. Traveler after she turns their teachers into paintings.
  • Shattering the Illusion: Amity and Emily both cancel out the illusions they see by using fire spells.
  • Shout-Out:
    • While facing Gus and Boscha, Cooker uses a Blight Industries Abomizooka, a nod to the meatball bazooka Chef Hatchet has been using ever since Total Drama: Revenge of the Island.
    • Horace getting his face burned due to acid brings to mind iconic Batman villain Two-Face.
    • Along with Butters, Expys of Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny from South Park appear and the "They killed Kenny!" gag is used.
    • JP has stated that the original flashbacks Eda has are inspired by Lethal Weapon, notably the scene where Eda's in the old house with a gun pointing at her during her Darkest Hour.
    • Prof. Redback's powered-up form is inspired by Ultimate Spidermonkey in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien.
    • Mushu of Mulan fame is mentioned to exist, and is implied to be part of the Dragon Council from American Dragon: Jake Long.
    • Genie impersonates Stewie Griffin at the Order's meeting for no reason.
  • Spanner in the Works: None of the Glandus illusionists were prepared for the possibility of their covers getting blown so when Barcus and Skara are able to figure out the ruse and see through their tricks, they're swiftly defeated.
  • Strapped to an Operating Table: Asi keeps Luz captured this way, as he's dreamt of dissecting her this way.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Flint is heard speaking since Simon can understand him. Maya falls under this as she's using Luz to communicate.
  • Take That!: Another jab at The Owl House's shortened runtime is made when it's mentioned that Patti and Korn's favorite show (an in universe Affectionate Parody) was canceled after two seasons and when it was getting good.
Patti: They should have not canceled "Rooster Cottage".
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Averted. While Gus and Boscha start their fights against Horace and Cooker alone, they end up working together to beat both of them and Boscha compliments Gus's skills afterwards.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Mattholomule leaves a group of Glandus students at the mercy of the Choosy Hat after leading them away from the healers.
  • Uncertain Doom: Right now, there's no hint as to what happened to Hunter after Nina captured him. There's also no clue as to where Brucy is after he got separated from Luz.
  • Villain Ball: Emily had to go as far as to tell Gus she orchestrated Luz's death and plans to take Amity prisoner as a witch pet. This leads to Gus taking her down with his Power Incontinence.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Asi is the first Glandus top student to fall and in his second appearance, due to Maya injuring him.
  • Wham Episode: Hexside begins to turn the tide in the war; the Glandus illusionists are defeated, Luz escapes Asi's clutches when Maya possesses her, altering her cambion form before meeting up with Amity, Eda gains her harpy form, Simon recovers from unconsciousness after his defeat at Cain's hands, Willow prepares to face Cain and Grease, Tito finds Hexside's healers, Horace is paid back for his treachery, Skara and Viney prepare to face Nina for injuring Boscha, and Gus cripples Emily and realizes she's actually an illusionist.
  • Wham Line:
    • When Amity asks who she's speaking to if not Luz, "Luz" gives her true name: Maya.
    • Gus's last line (the last line in general) is him realizing Emily is actually an illusionist.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Before Amity teleports away, she sees graffiti on the wall that reads "THE INNER DEMON SEES ALL!"
    • After escaping Asi, Luz's cambion state gains crimson hair, red scales and slimmer claw-like wings.
    • Emily dispells Gus' illusion sphere with aquamarine flames, with her eyes glowing the same color which clue Gus in on her true magical prowess.
  • When It All Began
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: The Cerberus sisters build up Eve's confidence after she reveals her doubts about her role in their team, building her up enough to strike back against the Emo-Teens.
  • You Killed My Mother: Asi holds Luz responsible for his mother getting killed and sold as choice cuts across the Boiling Isles after ending her teaching career.
