Chapter 140: Change of Plans

The rebels' plans to stop the Day of Unity have hit multiple snags, but they refuse to lose hope: Felicia takes a stand against her mother.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptation Deviation: Thanks to Felicia, the entirety of the Boiling Isles learns the truth about the Day of Unity the very day before it takes place, undermining Belos' rule.
  • Always Save the Girl:
    • Determined to save Donna from Draco and Lupe, Nina decides to follow them using their teleportation glyph, with Skara and Slasher joining her.
Lambi: I trust you. This is something you have to do, right?
      Nina: It's Donna.
    • Emily sides with the rebels to help Cross break Zee, Barbara, and Gidget out of the castle dungeon, even if she doesn't care about the latter two scouts.
  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • During the attack on the CAT's base, Kikimora has an abomaton blast Hunter just as he was using a glyph. The result is the spell exploding, blasting off Hunter's cyborg arm.
    • Belos has asked Draco and Lupe to bring Donna to his castle alive. Since he can't kill Donna, Lupe settles for eating her left hand.
  • Asshole Victim: Felicity, at long last, gets what's coming to her when Kitsuni and Calypso arrive to save Felicia and the Ninja Kappa, with Calypso being the one who gives the bitch her well-deserving end.
  • Bad Boss: Once Donna's in their clutches, Draco and Lupe teleport away leaving their entire army behind to be curb-stomped by Donna's friends.
  • Bait-and-Switch: A scout tells Leonte to come deal with a situation, which could be a scout uprising over the Draining Spell being revealed. It's subverted when he apparently goes to deal with Cross, Le'Belle, and Bindell... which is Double Subverted when he starts goofing around and Cross immediately realizes it's Emily.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Arthur keeps whining about how he's unable to die in his current state, so he can't be reunited with Destiny. When Amity eventually gets sick of it, she gives him a one-way ticket to the afterlife.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Goes both ways for the Drakescale siblings, with the both of them putting themselves in front of the other while Bloody Mary's in their vicinity. Earlier, Cross makes getting Zee out of the castle his main priority since she still has her shock collar, which makes her a liability as it can be activated by coven scouts.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Before Felicity could kill Felicia, Kitsuni pops in just in time, breaking Felicity's arm and her teeth in.
    • Emily rescues Cross, Le'Belle, and Bindell while pretending to be Leonte, tells the latter two where to find Steve, and leads Cross to the dungeons to break his sister and cousin (along with Gidget) out.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Before the Drakescale siblings escape the castle through the underground tunnel, Zee gives Emily a kiss since she isn't going to risk not being able to do so later.
  • Big Damn Reunion: After finding Cross, Emily gives Aqua to him after having recovered her from the palisman reserves. She then takes him down to the castle dungeon where they free Zee and give Aqua back to her, to her joy and relief.
  • Big "NO!": Felicity lets a long one out moments before Calypso drains her blood.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Amity tells Arthur to put a sock in it when he keeps complaining about not being able to die so he can be with Destiny.
  • Bittersweet Ending: With a heaping dose of sweetness. Sure, Belos has King, Willow, Hunter, and Donna as his prisoners, but his plans are falling apart now that everyone on the Isles knows about the Draining Spell, Felicia is finally free of her abusive mother and has a tender reunion with Todd, the Covens Against the Throne have regrouped and are storming the castle thanks to Amity getting Wrath on their side, and Emily helps Cross save Zee, Barbara and Gidget with Zee kissing Emily to make her promise she'll be okay while remaining in the castle.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Emily does this while impersonating Leonte.
  • The Bus Came Back: Henry and Raw Frewell return after last being seen in "Expect the Unexpected", deciding to start a revolution against Belos once they see Felicia's broadcast about the Draining Spell.
  • Call-Back:
  • The Cameo:
    • Among those watching Felicia's broadcast are;
      • Riley, Tracy, and the remaining Ghoul Girls, with Helga telling everyone to turn on their scrolls.
      • Jerbo, who tells the Bad Girl Coven to tune in with Cat, Matt, and Bo reacting to the news.
      • Boils, who's being served a drink by Snowpaws.
      • Staggertarious, who's joind by some figure hidden in the shadows of his study.
      • Tibbles and Jeanie, who react in fear at the mention of the Draining Spell.
      • Beck, Thumbstone, Pam, West, and Winter, who show shock and disgust with Felicity mauling her own daughter.
      • Henry and Raw, who decide to revolt after asking their grandfather for permission.
    • Gibson shows up at the end of the chapter expecting the rebels when they arrive at the castle, but things end with him being ambushed by them.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: As the Clawthornes escape the burning precinct, Luz and Lilith take to saving the remaining living scouts rather than leaving them behind. Eda joins them soon after, and they escape before another explosion goes off.
  • Cliffhanger: The Isles now knows of the Draining Spell, Nina, Skara, and Slasher are about to teleport into the castle to rescue Donna, and the CAT's have regrouped and proceed to Storm the Castle.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Amity's ability to speak to animals is used again when Maurice tells her what happened at the CAT's base.
    • Kitsuni calls Felicity by her real last name, "Fauxworm". Todd had told her that when they first met.
    • Kitsuni uses her keyblade, which she reclaimed from Yen Sid in the previous chapter, against the Alchemist and the Ninja Supreme.
    • Once Felicia tells Todd he's her father, he remembers his one night stand with Felicity and puts two and two together.
    • Odalia recounts her "Charles Dickens" experience when comforting Emira, and her daughter is just as confused from it as she had been when she first heard the term.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Pam does this while hugging West and Winter so they don't see what Felicity did to Felicia.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Teenage Demon Ninja Reptiles are no match against the Alchemist and the Ninja Supreme, getting recaptured after escaping. Then Kitsuni arrives and soon turns the tide against the two rouge yokai with her keyblade.
  • Cry into Chest: Seeing Luz cry over Larry dying, Eda pulls her daughter into her body to comfort her.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Felicia has more focus that she's ever had before still trapped in the Media Coven with the TDNR at the mercy of Felicity, the Ninja Supreme, and the Alchemist.
  • Death Glare:
    • Amity seems to give one off, if Venoma freaking out after Amity kills Arthur is anything to go off of.
    • Belos shoots one to King when the titan brags after Felicia exposes the draining spell.
    • Cross has one when he asks Emily where to find Osran, clearly looking for his blood for branding his sister.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: When Belos sees that Felicia got the word out about the Day of Unity's true purpose, King takes the opportunity to goad him. Belos instantly silences him using a Death Glare.
  • Emotionless Girl: While everyone's mourning Beocrow, Nina steps out of the room both to investigate the teleportation glyph and because she doesn't handle death well, keeping herself from reacting.
  • Everybody Cries: Numerous characters at St. Epiderm shed tears from losing Beocrow, with Denise, Felix, Lulu, Tina, Veronica, Tyrone, Lindsay, and Danny being the most hurt (seeing as Beel's death is still fresh for the Epidermites, this really hurts).
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: As Star questions if Belos expected everybody to hit the places the CAT's targeted, she realizes that Cross, Steve, and Le'Belle may have walked into a trap.
  • Freak Out: Luz, already stressed from Larry's death, starts spiraling upon learning that Belos knows about the Clawthornes having the portal key along with their own door. Amity soon gets her to calm down by bringing up how to use that to the CAT's advantage.
  • The Gadfly: Cross makes it clear to Zee that he's going to be needling her over her feelings for Emily as payback for all the times she razzed him about his love life.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While it isn't officially stated, Emily may have had hers offscreen and starts fighting against the empire by helping Cross free Zee, Barbara and Gidget before directing the Drakescale siblings out of the castle so Zee isn't put in harm's way from her collar.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Venoma and Arthur went into battle against Amity arrogantly thinking they could kill her with ease. She evades all of their attacks before melting Arthur to kill him, with a horrified Venoma surrendering soon after.
    • Felicity thought she was going to benefit from surviving the Day of Unity and get away with murdering her daughter. Kitsuni and Calypso's returns lead up to her death, and Felicia exposes her true colors over the news, ensuring she wouldn't leave behind a Villainous Legacy.
    • Belos did manage to arrest a large portion of the rebellion, but they manage to reunite before they reach the castle and begin their counterattack once they enter. Plus, Felicia succeeds in exposing the truth about the Day of Unity in order to turn the public against him, to his anger.
  • Hypocrite: While fighting Amity, Arthur calls her a disgrace of an abomination witch for not being able to summon a full abomination for months. Amity then asks if he can do so, and his attempt to find out quickly fizzles and makes him angrier.
  • I Reject Your Reality:
    • Belos doesn't accept that Hunter no longer believes in his ideals and goals, assuming he's just going through some "rebellious teen phase".
    • Leonte, already nutty enough, outright blames Steve for turning the people who were working with him to infiltrate the castle against the empire because he can't even fathom the thought of anybody else betraying the Emperor's Coven without Steve influencing them.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: To finish off Arthur omce and for all, Amity stabs him with the Sword of Adam and channels her fire magic into it, causing Arthur's body to melt.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While it isn't Luz and Lilith, two main characters do learn about Philip's teleportation glyph and use it.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • The remaining rebels (the Clawthornes, Amity, Raine, Star, Darius, Eberwolf, and Tres) realize that Ulrich has been compromised.
    • The Clawthornes find out that Belos knows about their portal and the key being in their possession.
    • Felicia reveals to Todd what Felicity told her about him being her dad.
    • King, Willow, and Hunter learn that Belos knows of King's titan roots and plans to force Willow to take Terra's place on for the Day of Unity.
    • Emira tells Odalia, Hikari, and Bela about her convincing Viney to spare Firebees.
    • Thanks to Felicia, the entirety of the Boiling Isles is informed about the Draining Spell. Everybody also sees that Felicity nearly killed her for discovering the truth by chance.
    • Cross and Emily discover why Barbara was arrested, that Osran branded Zee, and encounter Jacob Hopkins.
    • Emily and Zee encounter Bloody Mary and Grimhilde for the first time.
  • It's All My Fault:
    • Lilith blames herself for what happened to the rebellion, due to being the one who suggested recruiting Ulrich in the first place.
    • Raine also blames themself for their allies getting arrested since they were unable to counter Belos' plans.
    • Odalia faults herself for her children getting involved with the rebellion, but Emira rebuffs it by reminding her that she, Edric, and Amity joined of their own free will, not because she forced them to.
  • It's Personal: Since Draco and Lupe kidnapped Donna, Nina, Skara, and Slasher mobilize and leave St. Epiderm to go save her.
  • Just Toying with Them: To push Felicity past her breaking point, Calypso stalks her like a predator searching for prey while hunting her down before consuming her blood.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Sickening as it is, Draco and Lupe are the only villains from the surprise attacks to get off scot-free as they kidnap Donna and bring her to Belos, who plans to use her key for his plans. Lupe even eats Donna's hand, and gets no comeuppance for it.
    • Kikimora nearly kills Hunter when she blasts off his arm, but Wolffe lets her off the hook for it since she knocks Hunter out and it's fine since Belos wants him alive. She, Wolffe, and Ulrich manage to capture Willow, Hunter, and King and bring them to the castle.
  • Karmic Death: Felicity abused her daughter, nearly killed her, slandered the Clawthornes, and sold out her species to keep her magic. Calypso, whose family she insulted before, is the one to end the rotten bitch by draining her of all her blood.
  • Kick the Dog: The scout that arrests Odalia's group taunts her for "bringing her daughter and a few other kids into another one of her messes", ending it by telling her to never change and slamming the wagon door in her face.
  • Knuckle Cracking: Performed by Barbara when she declares her revenge against Osran.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Arthur suffered for a time as an abomination just as most of his children still do. He ultimately meets his end in this state by Amity's hand.
    • After Draco and Lupe escape with Donna, L.O.W.T.H. prevents the Snake Men and the Septarians from escaping before proceeding to pound them stupid. As for Silas, Nina literally twists his arm to get him to tell her where their leaders took Donna.
    • The Alchemist and the Ninja Supreme previously escaped capture with the latter nearly killing Kitsuni so she wouldn't interfere with their plans. Now they get their asses kicked by Kitsuni, who had taken her keyblade, Fox Temple, up in arms once again. Once they're defeated, they're tied up and stripped of their armor and weapons.
    • Jacob got thrown into the dungeon after giving Belos his information about the portal key.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: When Zee kisses Emily, Cross turns away with a small smile when he sees Emily returning the kiss.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Amity comes to see that since Belos is using the captured rebels, her family, and her & Luz's friends as bargaining chips for the portal key, he doesn't know the Clawthornes don't have it anymore, which they can use to their advantage.
    • Todd never knew that he fathered Felicia with Felicity and is overjoyed to learn he has a daughter.
    • Emily and Zee are both worried and confused by how Cross knows Bloody Mary and is working with her to end Belos for good. The only answer he can give them is that It's a Long Story.
  • Luminescent Blush: Fuyuko does this when she calls Felicia charming and charismatic.
  • Nemean Skinning: Once Felicity is dead, Calypso keeps her vow to take her pelt after skinning it off her lifeless corpse.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Thanks to Wolffe, Ulrich, and Kikimora's raid on the CAT's base, Goregon, Weaselton, Ruth, Zepher, and Brian are back on the loose and disappear when Willow goes nuclear trying to force out the Emperor's Coven.
    • Osran put Barbara behind bars under the belief that she'd betray the Emperor's Coven: that act is ironically the reason why she does so now.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: To punish Steve for "corrupting" Le'Belle, Sunny, Bindell, and Cross, Leonte has him chained up and proceeds to endlessly punch him. When Steve tells him to just kill him, Leonte makes it clear he's not going to until he makes an example of him in front of the other scouts.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: When rescuing the prisoners, Emily says she's only freeing Zee: Barbara and Gidget are let out of their cells because she was feeling generous.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Eda is shocked when she sees that the Emperor's Coven are now armed with guns.
    • Zee and Emily's natural reaction to seeing Bloody M for themselves.
    • Gibson when he sees that the scouts that delivered the captured rebels are Luz, Eda, Lilith, and Amity in disguise.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Cross becomes angry enough to seek revenge against Osran for adding Zee to the list of potential victims of the Draining Spell and practically demands Emily tell him where he is if she knows, which makes her hesitate. That anger vanishes when Emily tells him to forget Osran and focus on getting Zee out of the castle so her collar can't be used on her.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Once it's confirmed that Beocrow has died, Denise collapses in tears from losing her oldest son, needing to be comforted by her twin and father.
  • Quit Your Whining: Felicity sees Felicia protesting against her mother's actions—given her attitude the entire conversation, Felicia just existing— as such, proving she didn't want nor deserved to be a mother.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Alchemist and Ninja Supreme approached Felicity at some point, and told her about Felicia's kappa friends.
    • Draco's deal with Belos is revealed; in exchange for bringing Donna to the castle to use her Keyblade as a backup for his portal door, Belos will allow Lupe to do what he wishes with Donna.
    • The Alchemist knows about the Graveyard debacle.
    • Todd never knew that he made Felicity pregnant from their one-night stand.
  • Rousing Speech: When Amity sees Luz, her family and the remaining rebels losing hope, she picks up their spirits by telling them not to quit as Belos wins if they do before coming up with a plan to intercept the prison wagons transporting their allies.
  • Sealed with a Kiss: Near the end of the chapter, Zee takes the initiative and kisses Emily, making the illusionist promise they'll see each other again once the Day of Unity is stopped.
  • See You in Hell: As Amity kills Arthur, she tells him that he can join Destiny in Hell if he really wants to be with her again.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Goregon and the Chimeras that were held prisoner in the CAT's base are free once again, as if there weren't enough villains to worry about.
    • Emily has a plan to stop Belos and prevent the Day of Unity, but she has to stay in the castle in order to pull it off.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Acorn sits on Tyrone's shoulder and listens to him as he grieves over losing Beocrow. Even if he can't understand her, he appreciates her doing that.
    • Fuyuko seems to have a crush on Felicia as she calls her charming and charismatic when encouraging her to broadcast the truth about the Draining Spell.
    • Once freed and after hearing that Emily saved Aqua for her, Zee immediately hugs the illusionist in gratitude, flustering her. Later before parting ways, Zee kisses Emily on the lips to seal her promise that she'll stay safe and they'll be reunited again soon.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Fuyuko being implied to have a crush on Felicia alludes to Donnie having feelings for April in TMNT (2012).
    • When Emily gets rid of her Leonte disguise, she calls herself the "Friendly Neighborhood Illusionist".
    • A disguised Luz nicknames Gibson as "Gibby".
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: When Willow calls Belos out for his actions and plans while explaining why she's been using her powers to repair the damage his rule has caused to the Isles, he doesn't react at all. He actually looks bored by her attempt at calling him out, like he's heard it all before.
  • Token Good Teammate: Wrath is enlisted by Amity to help intercept and free all the captive rebels from their prison wagons.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Emily seems to have started acting more mischievous. When she learns Cross and Le'Belle have been detained in the castle, she disguises herself as Leonte and acts hammy to mess with them and Bindell before helping them escape.
  • True Companions: Emily is not only happy to see Cross again, but Le'Belle as well, and returns the hug they give her once they're free.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • How did Amity get Wrath on the rebels' side?
    • Did Emily and Cross go through with freeing Jacob?
  • Villainous Breakdown: Felicity starts to rant while running away from Calypso in the halls of the Media Coven, telling her that Belos needs her. Calypso responds by saying she can easily be replaced.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After seeing Amity melt Arthur using her sword, Venoma fears that she's going to turn that anger onto her and surrenders, allowing Amity to question her about Alador's whereabouts.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Amity gets Venoma to tell her where Alador is but after that, the next time Amity is seen is when she regroups with the remaining rebels with no word on what she did to the snake after she got what she needed.
  • The Worf Effect: As powerful as Willow is magically, even she can't withstand an army of Abomatons dog-piling her and they eventually knock her out, allowing Ulrich and Wolffe to take her in with their other prisoners.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Subverted. Once Bloody Mary and Grimhilde are given entry into the castle, Mary lets her hatred of witches take over and declares Cross has serves his purpose, nearly moving to kill Emily and the Drakescale siblings until Grimhilde reminds her that Belos is their target.
  • You're Insane!: One practically gets the feeling that this is what Donna meant when she hears that Belos is handing her to Lupe on a platter, as he wants to get rid of her so the Isles will see him as their hero.
