Recap / King Of The Hill S 3 E 2 And They Call It Bobby Love

Go To

Bobby befriends an older girl named Marie and falls in love with her, but gets his heart broken when she doesn't return his feelings. Hank and the guys start sitting on a couch found in the alley.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Bobby meets Marie while she's serving as a hall monitor and he makes up a fake alias (while holding a lunch bag with his name written on it), but Marie finds him funny and lets him go. And shortly after, they hit it off with Bobby joking around.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Bobby thinks Marie is his girlfriend, but she just sees him as a friend (that she sometimes kisses) and when he keeps pushing it, the friendship ends right there.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Downplayed since it wasn't in public and Bobby is normally unphased by such things, but even he has to groan in frustration on the backseat when Hank and Peggy try to cheer him up on the way to the steakhouse after his 'breakup'.
Hank: "Well, son, look at this way. Tonight you're going on a date with your parents. And we all know how much you like dating people older than you."
Peggy: "Ooh, look at me, on a date with my two favorite men! Lucky me!"
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Dale, Bill and Boomhauer protest over Bobby lying on their couch, still sobbing over Marie. They all ask Hank to say something. Hank goes up to Bobby and seems to say something that could comfort Bobby. But then he says "The couch is a happy place," which makes Bobby cry even harder.
  • Broken Tears: Bobby after he and Marie's "break-up", kick-starting his Heroic BSoD for the episode, making him crying non-stop for quite sometime and being incredibly depressed to the point that makes him ponder whether or not he should continue making people laugh. Bobby only snaps out of it after seeing Marie at the restaurant, with his goal to spite her.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Bobby doesn't take it well when he sees Marie dancing with guys at the party and ends up crashing it to make his heartbreak known.
  • Death Glare: Both Bobby and Marie exchange these right before he finishes off the last bite of steak.
  • Get a Room!: Happens to Hank and Peggy twice when they try to show public affection after being called out (on being too shy to demonstrate their love) by Bobby:
    • First at a hardware store by an old man when they were just simply holding hands. Both take their hands back in embarrassment afterwards.
    • Then after Bobby finishes his steak, they both hug and get told this by Chuck Mangione.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Connie realizes her own feelings for Bobby after he starts hanging out with Marie.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Watching Bobby eat the steak, Marie tells him he's making a fool of himself and nobody is impressed by this. Which then pans out to her parents cheering Bobby on.
  • It's All About Me: A small example. When the family goes to the restaurant and Peggy finally sees what Marie looks like, she states she sees why Bobby is attracted to her; Marie looks just like her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: After the "break up", rather than comforting Bobby, Peggy rubs it in how a 20-year marriage doesn't compare to an infatuation that lasts a few days. Obviously, this is not what a pre-teen boy needs to hear while crying his eyes out, but Peggy is right and Bobby concedes to this. However, when Bobby accuses Peggy and Hank earlier of being jealous of his relationship because their love (supposedly) isn't as strong as that of him and Marie's, Bobby points out that he's never even seen them kiss, asserting that they were afraid to show their love. Even Peggy is forced to admit he has a point; basically Peggy is putting her own ego over her son's heartbreak.
  • Likes Older Women: 12 year old Bobby has no qualms wanting to have a relationship with Marie, who's 14.
  • Mega Meal Challenge: Bobby does this when he attempts to eat a 72 ounce steak. His vegan ex Marie is there, along with her parents (who cheer Bobby on). Bobby does it, though he's sick off his ass afterward.
  • One Man's Trash Is Another's Treasure: Hank and the guys use a couch they find in the alley and use it to relax and drink beer on. Said couch used to belong to Kahn, who threw it away because a cat peed on it. Not that that fazes the guys any.
  • Platonic Kissing: Marie gives Bobby one right on the lips (something she apparently does with her friends regularly). While it's not a big deal to Marie, Bobby takes it as a romantic gesture, leading him to think Marie's his girlfriend.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Bobby eats the entire 72 ounce steak to spite Marie. But afterwards he gets really sick from it and throws up in front of Connie.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Or in Hank's case, publicly. During and argument with Peggy and Bobby over showing affection in public, Peggy makes an implication about having sex, to which a mortified Hank tells her to stop. Hank is even reluctant to show PDAs in stores and has to be goaded by Peggy into doing so. However, when Bobby wins the steak-eating challenge, Hank's so happy that he shares a kiss with her, much to Chuck Mangione's annoyance.
  • See You in Hell: Dale tells the garbagemen to go to Hell after they warn the guys the couch will eventually be taken away.
  • Ship Tease: In this episode, we learn Connie has feelings for Bobby and doesn't seem to take it well when he and Marie hit it off.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Bobby tells his parents about Marie and they kissed, Peggy says he's too young to kiss, while Hank is more concerned about him going out with a vegetarian, as he sees them as untrustworthy people (he caught one siphoning gas from a propane truck at work).
  • Special Guest: Chuck Mangione As Himself, Joanna Gleason as Marie's Mother and Sarah Michelle Gellar voices Marie.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Marie is a tall girl, who towers over Bobby. She's even shown to be taller than the other 14 year old girls she hangs out with. She's only a couple inches shorter than the guy among the group.
  • Straw Vegetarian: Marie is like this, refusing to eat anything with a head on it. Even her friends share similar beliefs and pressure Bobby into becoming one.
  • Vegetarian for a Day: Bobby becomes one while "going out" with Marie, although in his case it's more the result of peer pressure from Marie and her friends, as they don't approve of Bobby wanting to eat bacon or other meats.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: At the end of the episode, Bobby throws up that 72 ounce steak he ate in front of Connie, who's relieved to learn it isn't due to anguish from the "break-up" with Marie.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Subverted. At the end of the episode, after coming back from the steakhouse, Hank finds that the couch is gone, and the guys lament over its loss. Then in The Stinger, Bill talks to Dale on the phone about the couch's disappearance, revealing that Bill actually took it for himself and is sitting on it as speaks to Dale, asserting that it's all for the best.
