Recap / King Of The Hill S 3 E 14 The Wedding Of Bobby Hill

Go To

After Bobby and Luanne's prank war goes too far with Bobby replacing her birth control pills with candy, they all fake a shotgun wedding, with Bobby having to marry Luanne.

Tropes:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: What Rad Thibodeaux ultimately turned out to be. Despite being extremely arrogant and pretentious, Rad is incredibly charming, wins over Luanne and Bobby by his cool demeanor and even seems to be a caring boyfriend. But he then throws a party at Boomhauer's house without his permission and when Luanne asks him to throw everyone out, he refuses, leading for her to break up with him. And to really dig the point in, he then proclaims that he never said Luanne was his girlfriend, implying he is also a player.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: After Hank pulls Bobby out of the hot tub and drags him back home, showing him in his briefs. Bobby points out to him that he's in his underwear, while Hank counterpoints he made the decision, he has to live with it. Later one of Bobby's pranks on Luanne involved cutting in holes out of her pants exposing her panties from her backside.
  • Death Glare: Bill gives one to Hank and Bobby when Hank assigns Bobby the responsibility of house-sitting Boomhauer's house, as Bill feels like the honor should have been his. When Bobby asks why Bill is staring at them, Hank just says he's proud of Bobby too.
  • Double Standard: After Hank and Peggy tell Luanne that the marriage is legitimate because Bill is an ordained minister, Luanne tells Bobby that just because they're married doesn't mean that they can't date. However, she then declares that she can date but he can't, and he can't talk to Connie anymore.
  • Escalating War: Bobby and Luanne get into an escalating prank war after a rift develops, starting with Bobby replacing her hairspray with an air horn, then Luanne putting dirt in Bobby's fruit pie, then Bobby getting her back by cutting holes in the back of her jeans. Luanne then puts glue on Bobby's pillow, which gets stuck to his head while he's sleeping and finally topped off with Bobby replacing Luanne's birth control pills with Sweet-Tarts.
  • Fan Disservice: We see Dale's scrawny, pale backside in a speedo thong when he tries to join Hank and Peggy in Boomhauer's hot tub. A disguted Hank asks him to leave.
  • Fanservice: Seeing Luanne sunbathing in a pink bikini before Rad picks her up for a date. And later on, looking pretty attractive in her wedding dress.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The first half of the episode focuses on Luanne's relationship with Rad, while the second half involves Bobby and Luanne's prank war, culminating in the fake wedding.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: The last scene has Bobby and Luanne making up while having cake and milk, with them warning each other of their pranks, and the last line being Luanne telling Bobby to stop drinking the milk and him gulping.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: Bobby pretty much gets the book thrown at him after the party left Boomhauer's house messy. He gets relieved from his duties as house-sitter, he'll no longer get his $1 a day and he gets his comedy props taken away. It's the last one that Bobby doesn't take well. And right after he bungles a joke.
  • Kick the Dog: With Luanne mourning over the break-up with Rad, Bobby is angry with her, especially since he saw Rad as a friend. Luanne then told him he wasn't; he was a hanger-on like A.J.
  • Kissing Cousins: Played with. Hank and Peggy stage a fake wedding with Bobby having to marry Luanne.
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: Hank, Peggy and Luanne keep letting Bobby think Luanne is pregnant after he replaces her birth control pills with candy to teach him a lesson. Bobby's thinks being she'll just randomly get pregnant after not taking pills (despite her not shown having sex).
  • Never My Fault: Bobby gets mad at Luanne for his getting into trouble with Hank and Peggy (resulting in his comedy props being taken away), despite the fact he pretty much let Rad have the party, even joining in the festivities. Bobby does acknowledges his mistakes in the end.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bobby when he sees an angry Hank right before being taken out of the hot tub while surrounded by women and beer cans.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil : Downplayed in how no one here is really evil, but Hank and Peggy tell Luanne after the "wedding" that Bill is a licensed minister, making their marriage legal. And with Luanne also partaking in the prank war with Bobby, they make sure she doesn't get off completely scot-free.
  • Pronouncing My Name for You: Rad Thibodeaux pronounces his last name as "thib-a-day-ox-sss". When Hank sees his business card, he asks if the name is actually pronounced "Tib-a-doe" (which is in fact the correct pronunciation):
Rad: Well, you know, sometimes by mistake.
  • Real Fake Wedding: They set up an actual wedding, with Dale playing piano (a self-playing electric organ), Bill (posing) as a minister, and with a reception at the end. Even Kahn apparently believed it was real.
Kahn: Minh! Minh! It's finally happening! Bobby Hill-billy marrying hillbilly cousin! (laughs) You owe me $5! In your face!
  • Serious Business: Played for laughs regarding the escalation of the pranks but subverted, as Hank and Peggy both acknowledge screwing with Bobby's favorite snack didn't justify tampering with Luanne's birth control.
Luanne: Bobby messed with my medicine.
Peggy: You messed with his fruit pies. After that, he had nothing to lose.
  • Shotgun Wedding: Or rather, a fake shotgun wedding.
  • Special Guest: Matthew McConaughey as self-proclaimed genius Rad Thibodeaux.
  • Stag Party: Hank, Bill and Dale has one for Bobby at an ice cream place, though a depressed Bobby doesn't feel like eating.
  • Tagalong Kid: Bobby, with Luanne's date with Rad. While the latter two are making out, Bobby interrupts them, demanding Rad's attention.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Luanne does this to Bobby when she puts dirt in his fruit pie. Then inverted when Bobby replaces Luanne's birth control pills with Sweet-tarts.
  • That Came Out Wrong: "I GOT LUANNE PREGNANT!"
  • The Unfair Sex: After being led to believe that Luanne is stuck being married to Bobby, she takes him aside and tells him the rules: she can date as much as she wants, while she forbids him to see Connie.
  • Window Watcher: The night before the "wedding", Bobby asks Connie if he could watch her do homework on the computer from the window. She complies but is still creeped out regardless.
