Recap / Family Guy S 21 E 14 White Meg Cant Jump

Go To

Meg signs up for the Adam West High basketball team. Meanwhile, Stewie gets sucked into the world of conspiracy theories.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Sometimes, it's a good thing to lie, especially if it's for the benefit of the other person.
  • Bait-and-Switch: While he and Lois are visiting Dr. Hartman, Peter scribbles something down on a notepad, making it seem like he's trying to communicate with them. It's revealed seconds later that he actually drew a picture of Garfield.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Quagmire expresses hope that the basketball team will have their photo featured on a wall at Applebee's. When they win the championship game at the end, their photo is indeed hanging on a wall at Applebee's.
    • Principal Shepherd mentions he's getting divorced while asking Meg if she wants to join the basketball team. His now ex-wife wins the right to provide the closing narration in the divorce settlement.
  • Giving Up the Ghost: Stewie is so shocked by seeing his parents have sex that he passes out and his spirit leaves his body. Then his spirit sees them and also passes out.
  • The Ground Is Lava: Lois springs the eponymous game onto Stewie so he won't disturb her while she and Peter are having sex. Stewie goes along with it, even imagining that the floor is literally lava, until he trips and accidentally drops Rupert to the ground. He's upset that Lois lied to him again when he sees that Rupert "survived".
  • Inspirational Insult: Peter’s heckling enrages Meg into becoming an unstoppable force in the basketball court, so he keeps it up to give her a winning streak.
  • Lies to Children: Stewie cottons on to the fact that Lois has been feeding him little white lies. This causes him to go down a YouTube Conspiracy Theorist spiral of videos for small children claiming that parents lie to them to control them. This leads to Stewie to angrily barging into his parents' bedroom, which causes him to witness them mid-coitus and develop multiple personalities. At the end, Brian gives him another lie about what Peter and Lois were doing to restore Stewie's sanity. Stewie knows it's not true, but he would really rather not address the truth of what he saw.
  • Lost Voice Plot: Peter heckles Meg so much during her basketball games that his voice gives out. Dr. Hartman warns him not to talk for a week or else he might lose his voice forever. Peter tries insulting Meg with a whiteboard at Lois' behest, but it's not very effective. However, with some provoking from Meg, he manages to belittle her during the championship game at just the right moment and lead the team to victory.
  • Multi-Gendered Split Personalities: One of Stewie's alters is a prim and proper woman named Mrs. Padbury Wilkerson.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title for this episode is a reference to White Men Can't Jump.
  • Primal Scene: Stewie has an out of body experience while watching Lois and Peter do it. His projection has its own out of body experience while watching the same thing.
  • Sanity Strengthening: Stewie suffers a psychological break after witnessing his parents mid-coitus and develops multiple personalities as a result. When having Stewie's alters talk things out doesn't work, Brian tells him a lie that Lois was actually checking her bed thread count and Peter was cheering her on, which restores his sanity. Mrs. Padbury Wilkerson calls out how transparent this claim is, but Stewie decides he would rather believe that than the truth.
  • Self-Deprecation: A cutaway has a Take That! at the father of Britney Spears, before an announcer notes that Family Guy is on Britney's side "now that it's popular."
  • Split Personality: Stewie ends up developing multiple personalities after walking in on Peter and Lois having sex.
  • Take That!: While eating at Applebee's, Quagmire complains to the waitress that his steak might be overcooked. She replies, "This is Applebee's. It definitely was overcooked." Furthermore, the chain is given the fictitious slogan "Drink your blue drink and shut up."
  • Talking to Themself: At Bruce's office, two of Stewie's alters (Mrs. Padbury Wilkerson and Boone) argue over the extent of how traumatizing it was for Stewie to walk in on his parents having sex. This quickly escalates to them having sex themselves.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Meg gives one to Peter near the end which restores Peter’s voice a little to give the insults Meg needs to win the game.
Meg: Dad, you have insulted me every day of my entire life, and now, the one moment when I need it, you've got nothing?
    [Peter points to his throat]
Meg: Well, guess what, you tubby piece of crap. I don't need you. I'm gonna hit this shot without your help, and when I do, I'm gonna experience more glory than you ever have in your entire empty, pathetic life.
