Recap / Carl S 5 E 6 Revenge Of The Simp

Go To

Leon, the antagonist of the "Summer of '19" duology has moved to Toad Town High and claims to have turned over a new leaf and promises to make it up to Carl and Grace for the way he treated both of them. Meanwhile, Talia gets in trouble with her father and Roxanne is forced to spend the weekend with Gooper.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: In past episodes Ronald was simply too strict with Talia. Here he emotionally abuses his daughter and sends her to a school on the other side of the kingdom, away from her friends and loved ones, just because she went to the basement with her boyfriend. Worst of all, he thinks all of this is good parenting.
  • Action Pet: When Marvin sees Leon trying to kill Carl with a replica sword he jumps out of his pot and begins to attack Leon
  • Apathetic Citizens: Other than their initial shock, the teenagers at Leon's party don't seem to care much about the fact that the host of the party they are in is literally dead.
  • Ax-Crazy: Leon tries to murder Carl after being exposed as a liar.
  • Back for the Dead: Leon comes back after a long time... and gets beheaded by a surfboard by the end of the episode.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Leon claims to have changed for the better, but later on reveals to Kylie that he still lusts after Grace and wants to convince her to dump Carl for him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Grace and Carl are still together and Blooper builds up the courage to ask Roxanne out, but Talia has been sent to Ocean Side by her controlling father and Roxanne has been kidnapped.
  • The Bus Came Back: Leon returns to the series... only to be Killed Off for Real.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Leon's fish tank and surfboards all play a part in his death.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: While Carl taking Marvin with him is not uncommon, no one could have predicted that he would save Carl from Leon and play a part in his death.
  • Comic-Book Time: As the name states, the "Summer of '19" duology took place in 2019. This episode takes place in 2021 and no one looks any older since then. That said, all three of FreezeFlame22's shows take place in a Floating Timeline, so this isn't anything new.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Talia's father sends his daughter to an all-girls boarding school in Ocean Side just because he caught her drinking wine in the basement with Dry Bones.
    • Leon tries to murder Carl after being exposed as a liar and a simp.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: There's a shot of the door to Leon's bedroom and Grace can be heard saying "Wow, impressive!". It is immediately revealed that she was talking about a replica of King John Koopa V's sword though.
  • Domestic Abuse:
    • Gooper is really just blackmailing Roxanne into being his girlfriend.
    • Bodak is this towards his girlfriend, often belittling her and treating her like if she were his property. You can see by the poor girl's expression and her lack of dialogue that this has been going on for a while.
  • Entitled to Have You: After two years, Leon still feels that Grace should be his girlfriend and not Carl's.
  • Forceful Kiss: Leon does this to Grace while trying to convince her to dump Carl. Grace is grossed out by it.
  • Foreshadowing: Halfway through the episode, Liam checked up on Roxanne to make sure she was OK and almost called out Gooper. A year later, he learns the truth about what Gooper did to Roxanne, and punches him in the face.
  • Gold Digger: Mary-Lynn was seemingly interested in Leon for his money.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Leon gets decapitated by a surfboard off-screen. The reactions of the other kids are enough for the viewers to know that it was definitely not the best way to go.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Leon claims to have changed for the better. He has not.
  • Jerkass: Ronald Richards is at his worst here, severely punishing his daughter for a minor offense, Slut-Shaming Kylie, placing all of the blame for Talia's depression and negative attitude on Dry Bones and failing to see that he himself is one of the main reasons why his daughter feels disdain for him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Talia's father is absolutely right in saying that Dry Bones cheating on his daughter with Kylie (even if they both had drunk too much and was unintentional on their part) had negatively affected her and that Chad Brolin had been a bad influence to her. That said, Talia's father also has missed the memo that he himself also plays a huge part in Talia's misery.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Leon is still the same wannabe girlfriend-stealer he was in "Summer of '19".
  • Killed Off for Real: Leon is decapitated by a surfboard.
  • Mood Whiplash: The ending shows us that Roxanne has been kidnapped while Gooper and his gang weren't looking... and then it cuts off to the cheerful ending music.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Ronald calls Dry Bones out on his behaviour towards Talia, the former's realisation hits when he can't change how he has broken her heart and made Talia feel horrible a year ago.
    • Inverted for Ronald, however, as he shows absolutely no remorse for his daughter's sadness of treating her horribly or even Dry Bones, for that matter.
  • Never My Fault: Leon seems to think that him being exposed as a liar as well as a simp it's all Carl's fault. Never mind that he outright told Kylie what his true intentions with Grace were.
  • Off with His Head!: Leon's final fate. He gets decapitated by a surfboard.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Everyone keeps reminding Carl of the time he hit Leon with a barstool. They don't say anything about Grace kicking him in the face though.
  • Pet the Dog: As unpleasant as Liam is, he's shown to actually care about his little sister deep down, as shown by his concern when he sees Gooper talking to her.
  • Screw This, I'm Going Home! / Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: Throughout the episode, Roxanne tries to leave Gooper on his own by attempting to go home, but Gooper averts every little attempt she makes by telling her he makes the rules.
  • Shown Their Work: It is actually possible for certain surfboards to behead a person.
  • Straw Misogynist: Bodak, who treats his girlfriend like a slave. No wonder he gets along with someone as sexist as Gooper...
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Mary-Lynn looks horrifying with too much makeup on.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After Roxanne hits her head and loses consciousness, a guy throws up on her.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: Mary-Lynn when she cries about Leon's demise.
