Recap / Carl S 5 E 7 The Christmas Captive

Go To

Carl and his friends learn that Roxanne was kidnapped by Bodak, the leader of the Gutts, one month ago and decide to rescue her. They receive some unlikely assistance in the process.

Tropes:

  • Action Pet: Marvin, once again, saves Carl from almost getting stabbed.
  • Adults Are Useless: The Toad Town Police has little to no success in the search for Roxanne, her mother demeans and lashes out at anyone who tries to confort her about her disappearance or contribute to the search, yet she insults and threatens them when they don't get any positive results, and her father didn't even notice that she went missing for over a month. Naturally, it's up to Carl and the others to find and bring Roxanne home.
  • Big Brother Bully: Blooper's brothers, as per usual. They mock him for being worried about Roxanne.
  • Christmas Episode: Despite the title, the story actually takes place a few days before Christmas, so everyone already has their decorations up.
  • Color-Coded Characters: The Gutts dress with red colors and the Kramps dress with blue colors. The Gutts even have Roxanne's hair dyed a shade of red during her time as their hostage.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Lampshaded by Calvin as he blamed Principal Staffordshire and her faculty at Toad Town High for not educating her properly.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Bodak will shoot his own gang members if they question him or simply beat him at a videogame.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Gooper's middle name is revealed to be Kifano.
  • Enemy Mine: Gooper and Carl's groups team up in order to rescue Roxanne.
  • Evil Debt Collector: The reason why Roxanne was taken hostage by the Gutts is that Gooper owed Bodak two thousand dollars.
  • Forceful Kiss: Bodak tries to give one to Roxanne when Carl and the others come to rescue her. The Kramps breaking into his hideout is what prevents him from doing so.
  • Gamer Chick: Roxanne is shown to be really good at videogames in spite of her never having played one before.
L'il Jimmy: Yo, you wanna tell her she's been playing against CPUs this whole time?
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Kylie tells Tucker to stop feeling sorry for himself just because Roxanne broke up with him, not only because his depressed personality is annoying, but because it's mostly his own fault that Roxanne broke up with him in the first place.
  • Gilded Cage: Downplayed. The Gutts' hideout is far from being a nice place to live, but the gang treats Roxanne fairly well for a prisioner.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Bodak's girlfriend shows hints of jealousy when Bodak compliments Roxanne's skills at a videogame.
  • I Have Your Wife: Bodak kidnapped Roxanne so that Gooper would pay him what he owes him in exchange of her freedom.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Mr. Morris accidentally plays an audio of him singing (or rather screeching). It causes all the students to laugh their butts off.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Roxanne's mother thinks that Grace might have something to do with her daughter's disappearance. Grace, of all people.
  • Jerkass:
    • Roxanne's mother, who laments how her daughter is missing but does nothing but demean everyone around her when they try to help.
    • Blooper's brothers, who insult him for being worried about Roxanne dissapearing.
    • Dry Bones' father, who insults Dry Bones for being in a relationship with Talia and threatens to kick him out of his house when he tries to defend her.
  • Mama Didn't Raise No Criminal: Roxanne's mother Catherine states that Grace, of all people, is probably the reason why Roxanne disappeared. When Carl points out that Roxanne bought Grace her first beer, Catherine rebuttals by saying that Grace probably made Roxanne do it.
  • Obnoxious Entitled Housewife: Catherine Smith, Roxanne's mother, lashes out at everyone who tries to help or comfort her about Roxanne's disappearance, yet insults and threatens them when they don't get any results when looking for her.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Roxanne's father apparently never noticed that his daughter went missing for over a month.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Bodak and Feefa have this, and it extends to their respective gangs.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Calvin mentions trying to track down Roxanne's phone in order to locate her, Catherine loses it, claiming that there could be personal information Roxanne wouldn't want anyone to see.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Roxanne revals that she has feelings for Gooper in spite of him being a misogynistic bully.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: According to what Grace told Felix and Staffordshire, Carl and the boys are definitely at the Christmas party, and Carl is definitely sober.
  • Take That!: When Boo asks if Roxanne is a member of The Gutts, Dry Bones sarcastically tells him that she is and that he is a member of BTS. Blooper then says that that explains why everything that comes out of Dry Bones' mouth sounds so painful.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Instead of being grateful to Calvin for looking after her disappeared daughter, Catherine does nothing but insult and demean him.
  • The Voiceless: Bodak's girlfriend again. Given how Bodak treats her however, it may not be too surprising.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Feefa, the leader of the Kramps, hotwired a bus full of schoolchildren because their teacher didn't pay him back.
