Recap / Aaahh Real Monsters S 1 E 02 Monsters Get Real Snorched

Go To

The second episode of the first season of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.

Gromble's Opening Line: "Lazy slimeballs!"

Monsters, Get Real: While attempting to scare a human boy, Ickis accidentally leaves behind his Monster Manual in the kid's bedroom. When his bumbling is exposed in front of the class, the Gromble threatens Ickis with a Snorching if he does not retrieve it in time. The trio manage to retrieve what they think is the right book, but discover they took the wrong book by accident.

Snorched if You Do, Snorched if You Don't: Picking up where the previous episode left off, Ickis is anxious about having left his manual behind back at the human boy's house. The Gromble takes the class on a trip to the slime pits, but excludes Ickis and sends him to be Snorched because of his lack of a manual. Wanting to help their best friend, Krumm and Oblina sneak away to retrieve his manual.

Monsters, Get Real contains examples of:

  • Ass Shove: One of the kids playing in Bradley's room shoves a wind-up key into Krumm's rear when he is mistaken for a toy, and a few moments later they use Oblina like a golf club to smack one of his eyes into his ass.
  • Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: Krumm's Uncle Grungy is seen menacingly emerging from slime and sneaking up behind the monsters. When the trio notice him, they gasp in shock... But then Krumm recognizes him and the two of them hug.
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out: "Of all the nauseating, puke-spouting, slime-floundering, toejam-eating, foul-smelling, worm-breathing, wart-covered, pus-oozing pimples on the butt of creation I've ever seen, THIS CLASS IS THE GRUNGIEST! And I'm darn proud of you..."
  • Cowardly Lion: After seeing Bradley and his friends play with Krumm and Oblina like toys, Ickis scares Bradley and his friends to rescue Oblina and Krumm.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference:
    • Ickis wears glasses in this episode, but nowhere else.
    • The Gromble's pumps are black instead of red.
  • False Reassurance: This exchange between Ickis and the Gromble:
The Gromble: (Nonchalantly) Do you know what will happen if you do not get that manual back?
Ickis: (Worriedly) You're not going to torture me, are you?
    Gromble: (Laughs) Of course not.
    (Ickis sighs with relief)
Gromble: (Deadly seriously while pointing) That's his job.
(Zoom over to the side to show the Snortch)
  • Here We Go Again!: After scaring Bradley and his friends and rescuing Oblina and Krumm, Ickis appears to have recovered his monster manual. Unfortunately, when he returns to the dump, he finds out that he accidentally brought back Bradley's Sergeant Mike, Police Dog book, meaning that he has to find the manual again the next day.
  • Hurricane of Puns: There's a lot of puns in this episode.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Ickis is paralyzed with fear when his friends are accosted by the humans, but when one of the boys suggests throwing Oblina and Krumm out of the window to see if they'll bounce, he gets serious.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: The Gromble literally chews up and spits out a student whose nose was running.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Oblina and Krumm have this reaction to seeing Ickis's failed scare, indicating that this is a common occurrence with him.
  • Pilot: This episode is a remake of the show's pilot.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The trio accidentally retrieve the wrong book, rendering the events of the episode pointless.
  • Skewed Priorities: Initially, Ickis had been worried that the Gromble would fry him for botching his scare. As bad as that is, the Gromble calls attention to a more serious issue: the fact that Ickis had left behind his Monster Manual.
  • Something We Forgot: The main drive of the episode's plot. While fleeing Bradley's room, Ickis had neglected to grab his manual, something the Gromble is not pleased with...
  • Terror at Make-Out Point: A flashback via the viewfinder shows Krumm terrorizing two teens making out in a car.
  • Title Drop: About a minute and a half in, Bradley's father comes in his room and asks if he's still reading monster comics. Once he leaves, Bradley derisively says "Monsters? Get real."
  • Toy Disguise: Krumm is mistaken for a toy by the kids playing in Bradley's room and is forced to play along.
  • Visual Pun: One monster's nose is literally running.

Snorched if You Do, Snorched if You Don't contains examples of:

  • 6 Is 9: Ickis is waiting in line with the other monsters to get Snorched and is given the number 61, much to his relief since it takes more time. The monster in front of him then reminds him that he has the sign upside down and flips it, showing it as 19 instead.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Krumm and Oblina retrieve Ickis' Monster Manual successfully, but the Gromble punishes them for doing Ickis' assignment for him.
  • Conveyor Belt o' Doom: Ickis' manual gets stuck on a conveyor belt leading to a furnace, and is only stopped by break being called.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: The trio are punished by being forced to listen to the Snorch sing opera.
  • Credits Gag: The Snorch singing soprano plays over the credits.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Ickis' locker attendant lies to him about the Gromble being sick to teach him some respect.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The street sweeper that sweeps up Krumm and Oblina reads "HERBERT J MOORE SANITATION: WE TAKE THE EW OUT OF SEWAGE".
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: There's one on the Gromble's boils.
  • Guilt by Association Gag: Krumm and Oblina are punished alongside Ickis because they did his assignment for him.
  • Hope Spot: Ickis sees he's number 61 on the list to be Snorched and is relieved, but that hope soon washes away when he finds out his number was upside down.
  • Multiboobage: Male example: One of the monsters featured in the episode has multiple pecs.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Oblina and Krumm manage to get Ickis' Monster Manual back, and are punished alongside Ickis for doing his assignment for him.
  • Sequel Episode: This episode picks up where "Monsters, Get Real" left off.
  • Skipping School: Oblina and Krumm sneak away from a class field trip to help Ickis get his manual back.
  • Tempting Fate: One of the monsters remarks the Snorch is a wimp. When he walks into the Snorching room, his begs for help are heard offscreen.
  • Title Drop: Krumm says "Snorched if you do, Snorched if you don't. Tough luck, buddy."
