The Floods is a children's book series by author Colin Thompson about the misadventures of a family of Wizards and Witches.

The books provide examples of:

  • The Ace: Mordonna is said to be very smart, a wonderful cook and her beauty is said to be legendary across the galaxies.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: There's another version of the first four books that are illustrated differently where most of the Floods look much better than in the original illustration.
  • Affably Evil: If one does not cross them, The Floods are very nice.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Betty may be the nicest out of all the Floods but you seriously shouldn't cross her.
  • Brainy Baby: Winchflat won an award for one of his inventions when he was still a baby.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Honestly, if you knew of a family like this, and were fully aware of what they do and how they do it, would you attempt to just be cordial, or would you antagonize them? Fortunately, most people prefer to avoid them and get away from them fast and yet politely as possible when they get too creeped out.
  • Children Are Immortal: Averted. In "Good Neighbors" Dickie Dent is turned into a fridge and Tracylene is devoured by Mordonna's semi dead mother.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Mordonna married Nerlin, who is a former "Dirt People", whom King Quatorze looked down upon.
  • Designer Babies: Nerlin and Mordonna's children were created in a laboratory with the sole exception of Betty, who was created "the same way as you and I".
  • Dude Magnet: Mordonna can get anyone to fall in love with her just by looking at her eyes.
  • Foil: The Dents are this to the Floods. The Floods look scary they are a nice to their neighbors and love each other very much while the Dents look are normal humans but are horrible to everyone including each other.
    • The Hulberts also serve as a foil to both The Dents and The Floods as the Hulberts are nice and boring (they even think having fun and going on holidays is a sin that brings nothing but sadness) and dress in even more boring clothes. However, after meeting the Flood family they have loosened up consederably.
  • Friendless Background: Betty never had a real friend due to there not being any kids her age in her neighborhood and the kids at her school thinking she's a freak due to her school lunches that consist of lizards and frogs. In "Survivor/Witch Friend" Betty finds a friend in Ffiona, her new neighbor.
  • Gilded Cage: Mordonna spent the first eighteen years of her life locked inside her father's castle until her father found a prince he considered worthy of her hand.
  • Girly Bruiser: Betty is a cute girl who dresses all in pink and pastel colors and skips a lot but is just as dangerous as her family.
  • Hated by All:
    • The Floods' human neighbors dislike and avoid them as much as they can, except for Betty since she looks normal.
    • The Dents also qualify as this due to them being horrible people. In fact the Dents are so hated in the neighborhood that when they disappear one by one the police search for them half-heartedly and nobody really cares.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Every book in the novel series has a TV show title for its title. Many of them are the names of reality TV shows.
  • No Name Given: Mr. Dent and Mrs. Dent's first names were never revealed.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Mordonna was given anything she wanted as a child and is very nice as well as a loving mother.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Blood for Valla.
  • The Unfavorite: Mordonna's sister Howler was this in their family due to her ugliness. King Quatorze allowed Howler to run free across the kingdom in hopes that someone would marry her and take her away.
  • Thicker Than Water: The Floods always stick together.
