  • So Bad, It's Good: Towards the end of the series. From book #9 onwards, many slip-ups occur, including a tendency to tell instead of show what happens (even though it's a mostly-written medium), a neglect for making The Flood Family maintain a sense of sympathy and loyalty from the audience because of how morally dubious they become, and there's even a point where Colin Thompson accidentally writes a line of dialogue that says the person saying it was a character from another one of his books from a separate continuity, Festival, from a book often called the How to Live Forever novel. In The Royal Family, the book suddenly shifts gears halfway through in a highly-meta "interregnum", starting with Satanella being turned into a human and then breaking her dog boyfriend's heart in her vain self-absorption (from the previous book, Bewitched), and switching into an A plot about how Betty manipulates her mother into being chosen as the new queen of Transylvania Waters, where Mordonna Flood only didn't want this to happen because she was feeling threatened by and envious of her own daughter.
