Crossovers
  • Amazing Fantasy (Spider-Man & My Hero Academia): Peter decides to become Izuku's mentor after watching him jump out of traffic the way he had as a teenager.
  • Assassination Academia: When Lovro and Korosensei discover that both of them are mentoring Izuku, Korosensei takes offense to the other's involvement. Later on, when Izuku chooses to train with Gran Torino, Lovro reacts similarly to how Korosensei did to learning about him.
  • Avatar Luz: Much like Aang before her, Luz runs away from home upon learning that people intend to take her away from her mother for years in order to focus exclusively upon her training, without allowing any way of seeing or contacting her friends or family.
  • Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron (Code Geass & Voltron: Legendary Defender): Lelouch and Suzaku's arguments during Confessions and Revelations are heavily implied to have similarities to ones that were had by Zarkon and Alfor when they were the Paladins.
  • Code Prime (Code Geass & Transformers): The main conflict in R1 comes down to two battles between former best friends, one an Ideal Hero, the other a Chessmaster, over how to fix a corrupt society. In an interesting twist, though, it is the human chess master who is paired with the Cybertronian idealist.
  • In Fate Ingens Cor, Artoria has a moment of utter horror when she thinks Lancelot has been reduced to The Berserker when she lays eyes upon him. Thankfully, he has not been summoned as a mindless killing machine this time.
  • Fate/Parallel Fantasia:
    • Caster's original Master attempts to betray her for the younger and prettier False Caster, just like how Jason of the Argonauts betrayed her original self, Medea, for a younger and prettier princess. She gets so pissed off at this happening again that she kills him and then tries to kill False Caster until she escapes.
    • In his original timeline, back when True Archer was Shirou Emiya, he foolishly risked his life to try to save Saber from Berserker. In the final battle, he ends up doing it again, sacrificing himself to save her and help her defeat Berserker. He comments on it, but dies without regrets, admitting he would choose to save her every time.
  • JoJo New Universe:
    • In Phantom Blood, Jonathan Joestar is supported by Robert E.O. Speedwagon in the fight against Dio Brando. In Stone Ocean, Jonathan's descendant Jolyne Kujo is aided by Speedwagon's descendant Iro "Rainbow Dash" Dashell
    • During the events of Stardust Crusaders, Josuke Higashikata and his mother were saved from a snowstorm by a man named Sanji Matsumoto, who Josuke based his pompadour hairstyle and heroic nature after him as they were the few things he could remember. Years later, Josuke would save the life of Daiya Oowada, who would name his gang after the words "Crazy Diamond" that Josuke shouted at the time.
  • Khaos Omega pulls one with quite the timing gap.
    • The first occurrence happens during the final days of Anise's vacation in Los Santos: Fontina Evans and Michaela Martin have finally managed to reach the dimension Anise is in, after Rosalie successfully tricked them into initially pursuing Anise's identical twin sister Adrienne. While walking around with a crowd nearby, Fontina's right arm suddenly sprouts a ki blade... and impaled on it is Kenny McCormick. Of course, Stan and Kyle are not far behind to accuse her and Michaela of the deed, leading to Anise (after revealing a dominatrix persona specifically immune to seduction) putting a seal keeping the duo in the Amethysts' resident dimension... that doesn't survive her next mission (a Crimson Blitz op to the Pokemon world's Orre region during the events of Pokémon Colosseum) thanks to Venus Barlow, a lieutenant of a group co-led by Fontina and Michaela that Anise didn't know about until Venus' reveal.
    • By the time a similar combination happens again, during the first proper installment of the Rogue Genesis series (an AO3 exclusive posted under the name KhaosEpsilon), more than a millennium has passed. This time the ki blade that kills Kenny is from Erza Scarlet... but Stan and Kyle, knowing Erza's aware of a Rogue Genesis agent's presence, accuse Sho and Simon, who're trying to get Erza arrested by the notoriously corrupt collective. Admitting they're the same ones from the occurrence in Los Santos (by this time immortalized as the Hijacked Meme Storm Incident), Erza specifically requests Venus Barlow oversee the destruction of the Tower of Heaven... only for this to give Sho and Simon the idea that finally succeeds in their goal regarding her and Rogue Genesis by having her arrested for helping build the Tower in the first place.
  • The Lion, The Witch, and The Fairy's Tail: The sequel Return to Narnia takes place during the Tartarus arc of Fairy Tail after the Magic Council was killed by Jackal, with the protagonists preparing to guard the former Council Members when they are summoned to save Narnia. When they learn from Trumpkin how Telmar tricked the council of Narnia and then poisoned them centuries ago, the Fairy Tail wizards are shaken at the parallels to their own Council's death.
  • Lost to Dust (Fate Series & RWBY): In Clockwork Academy, Ruby's new Team RAMA mirrors Team RWBY, which she notices. Anastasia is an upper-class girl and ice queen, both figuratively and literally, who gets off on the wrong foot with Ruby like Weiss. Atalanta is a Cat Girl like Blake. Medusa is a super-strong beauty like Yang.
  • A Lost Owl: Just like her first day on the Boiling Isles, Luz ends up breaking into the Conformatorium again in order to save Katya and help rescue all the captured members of the resistance.
  • A Man of Iron (Marvel Universe & A Song of Ice and Fire): A very subtle instance occurs when Oberyn Martell gives his eldest daughter as a bride to Antony Stark's ward Jon. Unbeknownst to him, he arranged a wedding between a daughter of House Martell to a Targaryen prince, recreating Prince Rhaegar and Elia Martell's union.
  • The Night Unfurls: Anyone with an inkling of what Bloodborne is about would understand that Shamuhaza is not the first person/party to seek the Eldritch Truth and tamper with the Great Ones — the Byrgenwerth College, the Healing Church, and their derivatives did that before in Yharnam for the sake of ascension, even to the point of performing horrific experiments on its citizens. For the latter case, the result is that Yharnam has fallen to the Beast Plague, ruined beyond repair like Loran and Pthumeru before it. When Kyril, his three apprentices, and his company arrive to the fortress city of Rad, now collapsed, he bitterly admits that it is too late for the people of Rad, as it was same for Yharnam... except he has a chance to stop this at the source, to make sure that this fate, together with a potential Beast Plague, will never befall Eostia and its people. He succeeds in the end.
"History would not repeat itself here, Kyril swore that would not happen. That was his duty as the First Hunter. He would not fail here."
  • Of Quirks and Magic:
    • Dr. Strange sees himself in Izuku when seeing the boy despair over his crippled hands. This, along with Izuku's earnest wish to become a hero to help others, is what inspires Strange to take Izuku under his wing.
    • Power Loader chastises Hatsume for trying to produce an AI based on Izuku's brain patterns, listing Ultron as an example of the potential danger such a thing could cause and forces her to dismantle it. His worry is based on experience: he helped create Ultron.
  • Post-War Baby (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi & The Untamed): Has Lan Qiren and the other elders from the Gusu Lan sect briefly worrying about Lan Wangji taking after his father as he suddenly arranges his wedding to someone the clan wouldn't really approve. Fortunately, it's a subversion as Lan Wangji is in a consensual relationship with his sweetheart Wei Wuxian, rather than wanting to trap him in marriage.
  • Raise Your Voice Against Liars: Several events mirror what transpires in Persona 5:
    • Like Akira and Ryuji before them, Marinette and Luka stumble across the first Palace by accident, get caught and are nearly executed for trespassing, forcing her Persona to awaken.
    • The Phantom Thieves are initially reluctant to try changing Lila's heart, wondering if they might be going too far. As with Kamoshida, they change their mind after learning that Lila has driven others to attempt suicide.
    • Marinette's first Mementos target was victimized by the very same person who becomes their second Palace target, pointing the Phantom Thieves in the latter's direction after their own change of heart.
    • The third target, Bob Roth, is part of an organized crime group, and their distortion covers an entire city.
  • A Song of Ice, Fire and Heart: After naming his daughter Myrcella his heir and the next ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert Baratheon grimly admits the Princess will have to face the same struggles as Rhaenyra Targaryen, as a woman going against the Westerosi patriarchy to become Queen regnant in her own right, and wonders if Myrcella's fight will be called the "Atrocity of Antlers" or "Sundering of Stags" since Rhaenyra was involved in the Dance of Dragons.

Ace Attorney

Danganronpa

  • System Restore: Throughout Chapters 2 and 3, Koizumi's personal history is echoed by what unfolds on Jabberwock. Much like how Satou's efforts to protect them led to two murders, Pekoyama is similarly killed in an effort to protect them. They also have to deal with another friend who is completely ignoring what they want, as Hiyoko 'justifies' some of her cruelty by claiming to be defending Mahiru.

The DCU

Digimon

  • A Captive Light: When the Digimon Emperor captures Gatomon, Kari is forcibly reminded of how Myotismon did so years before, and how that led to her being captured, followed by Wizardmon's Heroic Sacrifice to save them both. Despite her best efforts, things still play out in largely the same fashion.
    • In the sequel, A Fading Hope, Devimon cites this when he attempts to kill T.K. in order to prevent the prophecy of "the Smallest" defeating him from playing out again.

Disney Animated Canon

  • Two butterflies: gone with the wind.: Like his mother, Bruno is forced to leave his house with a small child to take care of. He ends up settling down on the other side of a river and is granted his own magical sentient house. He even wonders if miracles have a preference for Madrigal single parents.

Fusion Fic

  • My Huntsman Academia (My Hero Academia & RWBY): Glynda can't help but think of the days where she'd be patching up Toshinori after a stupid training accident when she's busy bandaging up Izuku's arms while he learns to use One For All.

Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire

  • The mage of the storm starts to arrange a second Dance of Dragons with a laid-back and easygoing monarch (Robert Baratheon/Viserys I) naming his eldest daughter by his first wife (Selene Baratheon/Rhaenyra Targaryen) over the son he had from his second marriage (Joffrey Baratheon/Aegon II).
  • In Our Blades Are Sharp, a knight wearing black armor wrought with rubies wins a tournament and crowns a Stark girl as his Queen of Love and Beauty. Ned knows the guy is actually Domeric Bolton — his daughter Sansa's betrothed — but the resemblance is not lost on him, nor Robert. In fact, Robert mistook Domeric for Rhaegar and nearly charges the tournament field in a rage before Ned points out that it's really Domeric.
  • In Winter Thorns of Highgarden, Lyarra Snow very much emulates Lyanna Stark when her decision to compete in a tourney leads a Southern heir to take an interest in her, which ends up in an elopement. Fortunately for Westeros, everything was carefully arranged to avoid another Civil War.

Godzilla/King Kong/MonsterVerse

  • Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): It's eventually revealed that the newborn Monster X's origin story has in a sense happened before with Monster X's "creator", Ghidorah. Like Monster X, Ghidorah was originally single-headed creatures fused together to form a multi-headed monster, and Ghidorah was tortured until it became evil not unlike what Alan Jonah tries (but fortunately fails) to do to Monster X.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed

  • In No Matter What You Are, there's the case of a Lan cultivator dragging a seemingly unwilling woman to the Cloud Recesses out of love. Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren certainly have seen the similarities, and are pretty upset over Lan Wangji apparently following in Qingheng-jun's footsteps, with the Sect Leader actually claiming this is "history repeating in the worst way".
  • A theme of the A Troublesome Charge. For instance:
    • Nie Minglin's first meeting with Lan Xichen involves their hands brushing during a salute ceremony, just as Meng Yao's first meeting did.
    • Nie Minglin ends up falling down a staircase. She manages to stop herself before she ends up too far down this time, at least.
    • Jin Ling's proposal to Lan Sizhui parallels Wei Wuxian's love confession to Lan Wangji pretty closely: it comes at an inopportune moment, while they are in the presence of several others, notably Lan Xichen and the reincarnation of Jin Guangyao. Based on her reaction, she notices the parallel.

Harry Potter

  • dead things: This trope is the fanfic's entire premise. On top of Harry and Voldemort's already similar backgrounds, they both lost a piece of their souls at some point, which leads them to a path of insanity and radicalized beliefs of violence being the only way to achieve societal change. They both also travel the world during a good chunk of their adulthoods to the point of everyone doubting their existence and then return as powerful, dark wizards who start a genocide for personal gain and the purpose of "improving" wizarding Britain. Oh, and neither of them can just die like normal people, both having attained some sort of immortality.
  • In Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past, while this concept literally applies as Harry is re-doing his time at Hogwarts, from Dumbledore's perspective this is happening with Harry; a young boy, with both parents dead from a young age and raised in a loveless household, showing tremendous aptitude and skill, with a clique of devoted young friends, most of whom seem to have little regard for the rules; put it all together and Dumbledore is disturbingly reminded of Tom Riddle. When he admits his concerns, Professor McGonagall calls him on this view by pointing out that Harry and his friends are True Companions, something the Death Eaters and Voldemort most assuredly aren't, with Harry showing equal concern for his friends as they would for him as opposed to Voldemort dismissing anyone who can't keep up.

Hey Arnold!

  • After the Jungle Series: Several of the things Andy and his friends/classmates go through mirror what happened to their parents during their childhood:
    • In The Spelling Bee II, Andy and Kiara compete in Hillwood's annual spelling bee, just like his parents did. Once again, Big Bob Pataki tries to bribe the biggest competitor into taking a dive so that his family member can win.
    • In "Sixth Grade Girls II", Andy meets Bonnie and Martiza at the city pool. Just like their mothers Connie and Maria before them, they ask Andy out in order to make their boyfriends jealous.
    • "Cool Party II" has Courtney following in her mother's footsteps by throwing a 'cool party' that excludes practically all of her friends and classmates while inviting a bunch of popular kids instead. Despite being invited, Andy ditches and throws a 'geek party' for all his friends, while Courtney's party proves to be just as disastrous as Rhonda's was all those years ago.

Henry Stickmin Series

  • Begrudging Assistance Requests: Ellie's hunt for Henry mirrors the route he took towards capturing Reginald: both were sent on said mission by law enforcement in exchange for their freedom, and both ultimately betrayed the deal in order to continue being criminals.

Jackie Chan Adventures

  • The Stronger Evil: In the Bad Future which Future Jade comes from, this has happened with Valerie and Shendu. Valerie has been killed, and her death has driven Shendu to the brink of madness and made him obsessed with using Drago, his own child, for revenge. It's revealed later in the story that this is exactly what happened to Shendu's mother Tiamat when her husband and Other Apsu was killed long ago.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

  • You will always have a part of me nobody else is ever gonna see: Jolyne's first use of her Stand Stone Free is much like her father Jotaro's first use of Star Platinum, which he notes when he arrives to pick her up from prison. Both of them found themselves outnumbered by a group of delinquents but are protected by their Stands, only to misidentify them as a dangerous demon and try to keep themselves locked in a jail cell so no one else could get hurt.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

  • Once Lost Now Found: During the press conference at the end of the story where Tony Stark announces that Peter Parker is his missing and presumed dead son, a reporter manipulates things into a conversation about the lack of Spider-Man sightings since the 'Avenger Civil War' and insinuates that Tony is covering up Spider-Man's death. Peter ends up admitting to being Spider-Man like how Tony did in Iron Man complete with ignoring a recommendation not to.
  • Turning Tables:
    • In Chapter 29, Peter has a panic attack when someone asks him about fighting in space similar to when it happened to Tony in Iron Man 3.
    • When Peter hesitates giving his speech announcing Spider-Man's retirement, Pepper correctly guesses what's going to happen, saying that he was "gonna pull a Tony."

Mega Man

  • In Mega Man Reawakened, both Protoman and Roll run away because they don't want Dr. Light to fix them at first, though Roll later relents. Robert points this out to Quentin Emerald, who's a terrorist like his father.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • The One to Make It Stay: In the past, the Guardians were betrayed by Master Fu's former friend and fellow pupil, who refused to take their duties seriously, caring solely about his own interests and personal gain. This is mirrored in the present day by Chloé and Adrien, both of whom are blinded by their selfish sense of entitlement: Chloé gets akumatized out of anger over being informed she won't be trusted with the Bee again, and Adrien loses the Ring to her when she pretends to be a fawning Ladybug, as he prefers the submissive illusion of his 'partner' to the real thing.
  • Truth and Consequences kicks off with Ladybug learning that Gabriel Agreste was Hawkmoth, forcing her to choose whether to tell Adrien the Awful Truth or try keeping him in the dark in order to avoid breaking his heart. In the sequel, Mending Warped Designs, Rena Rouge finds herself in a strikingly similar position after learning that The Toad is Chloé's father.
  • Truth & Journalism: After Marinette's Secret Identity was exposed, she finds herself facing a massive amount of attention after their vacation period ends and she returns to school. She compares this directly to the amount of fuss and attention Adrien received when he first started attending public school.

My Hero Academia

  • Crimson and Emerald: both Todoroki Touya and Shouto were physically and emotionally abused by their physically and socially powerful father with an abused mother powerless to stop him before they eventually rebelled. It turns out Endeavor was also abused in the same by his own father, Todoroki Ryu before he ultimately rebelled and refused to listen to his father or anyone else.
  • Dekugate:
    • When Izuku was born prematurely, Inko was forced to deal with him being stuck in a hospital room fighting for his life, with the very real possibility that he wouldn't survive. Later, she went through the same horror all over again after her husband Toshinori had his fateful confrontation with All For One.
    • When Inko and Toshinori first came out as a couple, she discovered that there were people who despised her simply for existing, which drove her into becoming paranoid, grief-stricken and self-loathing. Years later, Izuku learns about his personal hatedom and goes through the same process.
    • Izuku worries about the possibility of putting Ochako through similarly hellish experiences if he chooses to pursue a relationship with her.
  • Mastermind: Rise of Anarchy:
    • As part of his plan to restabilize society, Nedzu begins grooming Ochako to follow in the footsteps of All Might by making her the next Symbol of Peace. This also doubles as pushing her to become the next Hawks: a Child Soldier pressured into becoming a 'great hero' without any regard for her safety or well-being.
    • Fumikage finds himself being ostracized out of concern that he will follow Hawks' lead and turn traitor as well.
  • We're Not Friends Kacchan: Izuku ends up having another confrontation with Bakugou at Ground Gamma. This time around, however, he's the one who asks Bakugou to meet him there, and uses words rather than violence to take him down.
  • In Young Midoriya, Izuku follows in his mentor's footsteps by leaving Japan and studying abroad.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Alicorn: A thousand years ago, the relationship between sisters Celestia and Luna fell apart due to jealousy and resentment, allowing the Nightmare to return and make Luna its host. Now, the realtionship between Celestia's daughter, Rainbow Dash, and student, Twilight Sparkle, is falling apart for very similar reasons, and Twilight is hearing the Nightmare whisper in her dreams.
  • How I Lost My Mother: Princess Celestia had already made history when she decided to Banish Nightmare Moon for 1000 years; a fall that by all accounts could have easily been avoided when she noticed how her younger sister Luna felt underappreciated by their subjects and Celestia not bothering to resolve the emotional turmoil that she was feeling. History repeats again just several days before Luna's return when Celestia had a prophetic vision foretelling that her daughter had a small possibility of falling into darkness and unleashing destruction across Equestria; with Celestia deciding to opt for stripping her only daughter of her Magic and erasing all public memory of her existence before banishing her from Canterlot afterwards; never to return. This actually rendered the vision self-fulfilling; what's worse, even upon realizing her mistake, Celestia refused to address it, fearing the public's judgment should they ever learn what she'd done to her daughter. So she hoped that her child would simply never return, living out her life in exile. And much like with her aunt Luna; having been driven insane out of loneliness and desperate to have her friends back, Cozy Glow decides to find a means of restoring her Magic; and to exact her vengeance on her mother and the rest of Equestria for abandoning her.
  • Past Sins: Glimpses 2: "Legacy", a crossover with My Little Pony: A New Generation, and noting how that since the latter it set the future of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic universe:
Nyx couldn’t help but chuckle, thinking back to the beginning of Twilight’s own story. Six friends facing a calamity and searching for the Elements of Harmony. Had it really been so long that history was beginning to repeat itself?

Naruto

  • Compass of Thy Soul has a rather hilarious and deliberate example: Uchiha Sakurajima worships the late Head of Outguard Uchiha Biei-Fyji to such a degree that she decided it would be a terrific idea to seduce and marry a war prisoner just like her ancestor did. Her Clan head is not amused.
  • The Echo Remains, But The Song Is Not The Same: Team Seven discusses this on their way back from Wave. Kakashi states that bad things need to happen so that future generations can learn from their mistakes; Sasuke questions whether anybody actually learns anything at all, suggesting that history is a circle and people keep making the same mistakes over and over, endlessly.
  • The Moon Cries in Reverse: Played for Drama in Lunar Lamentations when Ibiki declares that Shikamaru has potential to become the next Orochimaru, due to possessing a brilliant mind and the ability to recognize Konoha's flaws. Even his own father starts to fear the possibility of him and his teammates Naruto and Sakura turning on the village. When Jiraiya learns about their fears, he reams out Shikaku, Hiruzen and the jounin instructors for not learning anything from their previous mistakes, declaring that their fears were what molded Orochimaru into a monster in the first place.

Odd Squad

  • My Dream Is Yours covers the second epidemic of Dream-Transfer-itis in Precinct 13579's history. Olive, Otto, Oscar, Oprah and Dr. O were all victims of the first epidemic, and gained automatic immunity from it. According to Dr. O, the odd disease pops up in office spaces and other spots where people are close together and share a space, and as such, Odd Squad precincts' Headquarters are hotspots for the disease to spread.
  • Patterns of the Past:
    • Chapter 2 has Olesya and Ogden, her partner, solve a case involving a woman having an absurd amount of the same kind of hat on her head no matter how many times she removes it, and when they go to solve it, Olesya remarks on how nice the hat looks on the woman, causing her to keep it. The flashback in "Totally Odd Squad" would have a similar conversation take place with Oprah and O'Donahue, only with a man who can't take off his shirt without the same shirt appearing under it rather than it being a hat.
    • The case of Olesya and Ogden going to catch the Patternista plays out quite similarly to Oprah and O'Donahue's case involving the same villainess. The only major differences are that the Patternista that Olesya and Ogden deal with is the real deal and not Old Missie in disguise, and Old Missie herself is actually kidnapped, leading ten agents to devise a plan to rescue her. It's revealed in Chapter 6 that the idea to challenge Oprah with the same case as a Secret Test of Character (as depicted in "Totally Odd Squad") came from Ogden, Olesya's partner, based on his own experience as well as the experience of Olesya and the rest of the rescue team.

Persona

  • In Anata no Tame ni Akogare: If Only You Knew, Ryuji agrees to help Makoto stop their classmate Eiko from being taken advantage of by a host in Shinjuku. He then learns from his mom that his father was once a host himself before he got Akane Sakamoto pregnant, which only increases Ryuji's anger towards the present-day host.

Tolkien's Legendarium

Young Justice

  • The Virtue of Revenge: Once again, Joker and Harley kidnap a Robin, intending to torture him in order to get at Batman. Thankfully, Red X intervenes.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Encrypt within the Dark, to Save the Clockwork of a Heart:
    • Yusaku once again captures Ai who claims to have lost his memories. Unlike in canon, Ai really doesn't have any memories and isn't lying when he claims he's on a search for a way to unlock his memories.
    • Discussed in chapter 14 when everyone notes how Queen's pride being destroyed is a reason for her actions, just like how a hit on Go Onizuka's pride drove him to do dangerous and idiotic things that made things worse.
