Main Story

  • Shortly after using the Blazing Sword for the first time, Shionne is quick to point out the consequences.
    Shionne: Your arms!
Alphen: Huh? (looks at his arms, which are scorched bare) Oh, yeah. How about that? Guess it's just as well that I can't feel it.
Zephyr: (bewildered) You're not in agony? Wait, are you serious?
  • After Alphen gets an outfit upgrade from the literal rags he was wearing, Shionne immediately demands they march over to a monster-infested ruin so she can find clothes worthy of her rank. Alphen is exasperated until he sees her new outfit.
  • In the first of the major Ship Tease scenes between them, Alphen passionately proclaims to Shionne how it's only thanks to her that he can wield the Burning Sword. Shionne freaks out a bit at his tone and proximity, only to blush up a storm and really freak out (complete with her thorns activating) when Alphen says he's just trying to compliment her. Worried by her reaction, Alphen assures her he'll stop, and for her part Shionne sounds almost... disappointed.
  • Law was supposed to be a temporary ally while they dealt with Ganabelt. Shionne never made any secret of her disdain for him, but mostly kept it under control. After Cyslodia is freed, Alphen says he has someone he wants to bring with them. Shionne stares at him for a long moment as she realizes who he means.
Shionne: Surely you must be joking.
  • When Law punches Ganabelt in the face. There's a blink and you'll miss it of him making a rather funny face. Given what he just did, it's very cathartic.
  • Shortly after Law joins, Alphen stops to have a conversation with him as they're proceeding to the next area. As the conversation drags on, Shionne and Rinwell enter the scene to complain about how they had to turn back for the two and they can't exactly fight zeugles without them, proving that talking is not a free action. Law then excuses it as nature calling, disgusting Rinwell. Later, once your party has made their way through the dungeon, Alphen and Law stop for another conversation, only to again be called out by Rinwell.
    Rinwell: Having another bathroom break?
  • Another Freeze-Frame Bonus comes during Alphen and company's meeting with Dohalim. They're quickly invited to dinner by the latter as he explains his motives. While doing this, we see the plates of everyone on the table filled with food. However, after Dohalim finishes his flashback, it can be seen that Shionne had already finished her meal while everyone else had barely touched theirs.
  • After Kisara goes over how to fish, Shionne is convinced that she should give it a try. Alphen immediately states (in his head) that she's only interested in fishing so she can eat. This is made most apparent in the Untameable Rage sidequest, where Shionne rags on Alphen for not prioritizing saving the legendary fishing hole and keeping the fish from a better home: "my stomach". During regular fishing, she constantly comments on how the fish are supposed to taste, how delicious she finds something on sight, and hoping something tastes better than it looks.
  • Despite the dire situation surrounding it, watching Hootle (trying to protect Rinwell) faint after nearly being killed by Vholran during the party's first fight with him is chuckle-worthy.
    • Their even more dire situation with Vholran in their next encounter is undercut by a... questionable thing he has to say when Dohalim realizes he's the fifth Lord of the Rena.
Vholran: "And like a restless lover, I've come back for more."
  • In Aureum Falls, there's a part where you can literally jump off a especially high cliff into a basin of Soft Water - much to Rinwell and Law's dismay. Then you can climb a comically long ladder, which also makes Rinwell and Law complain. Dohalim even calmly comments how he was aware this would probably not hurt, the implication being he pushed everyone off the cliff on a eccentric whim.
  • When Alphen rescues Shionne in Vholran's palace, the others remark at how lovey-dovey they seem to be toward each other. The funniest remark is made by Kisara of all people, who outright says they need to Get a Room!.
  • At one point, Shionne begins sobbingly fantasizing over all the things she'd love to be able to do, if only her Thorns didn't prevent her from touching anyone. Most of them are signs of affection, friendly embrace, but there's one other thing she'd like to do sometimes: smack Law in the face when he needs it.

Skits

  • In one of the first skits, Alphen grouses about how hard it is to scratch an itch on his face, as well as eat due to the mask he's stuck wearing. Shionne, on the other hand, is just baffled that he can even see out of the thing at all.
  • Soon after Kisara joins, she asks the others how they cook their meals. Turns out they basically just grab whatever is available, usually meat and nothing else. Kisara immediately takes over cooking duties to make sure these idiots are actually eating right.
  • Shortly after Dohalim and Kisara join, both Law and Rinwell notice that the two are sticking close to one another despite Kisara no longer being his bodyguard, and Dohalim not being a lord anymore. Both debate saying something, until Shionne just blurts out exactly what they were discussing, with Law commenting about how blunt she is.
  • One of the skits involves Law asking Alphen how he can stand wearing his armor all the time now that he can feel hot and cold and other sensations again. He eventually points out how bad it must be if he had to say, take a leak, disgusting Rinwell, and Alphen agrees that it is a lot to take off. Nevertheless, he says that it's better to wear it whenever possible because you never know when the enemy might attack.
Law: So basically, you're screwed if you ever get attacked while taking a dump. Right, Rinwell?
Rinwell: (turning red; annoyed) Are you doing this on purpose?
  • The other characters find Alphen with a terrible, ferocious-looking scowl on his face and ask what's got him so angry. However, when he speaks, he doesn't really sound all that angry at all. Turns out that he has a pebble stuck in his boot that he can't seem to get rid of. Shionne looks totally confused and flustered, while Law says that he totally gets it, that it's weird how much it can get on your nerves.

Sidequests

  • The fact that the heroes have to essentially guess what the Owl King and Queen are saying is poked fun at several times, made even funnier as it's Alphen and Shionne doing it. The former translates for the Owl King whereas the latter translates for the Owl Queen. However, the dialogue is as such that it veers between the two translating for the owls and them simply speaking to each other. By the third skit, the others are basically convinced that Alphen and Shionne are just flirting with each other rather than translating, much to their embarrassment.
  • Gouredeno is an old, eccentric, traveling gourmand, who oftentimes finds himself nearly passed out of hunger on the side of the road or street on his search for new and more delicious foods. This is largely because once he has his sights set on a new recipe he's yet to try, he refuses to eat anything but it, and thus leaves all the cooking and ingredient collecting to Alphen and company. There are numerous funny moments in his quest chain.
    • A Running Gag throughout his entire chain is his only commentary on food: cheering with his whole body and saying a food is, "Absolutely. Exquisite!" Shionne and Alphen both rag on him for how lacking in descriptions he is for a gourmand, with even Law being capable of providing a much more detailed and useful breakdown of the intricacies and delights of Beef Stew than Gouredono the professional.
    • The first time you meet him on the side of the road in Cyslodia, Alphen offers him a potato. Shionne protests its hers, and lucky for her, Gouredeno vehemently refuses, claiming he will only eat what he's looking for: Apple Pie. Once the group has assembled the ingredients, Alphen bakes it on the spot with Shionne egging him on. Goueredeno finds himself completely satisfied and leaves, after Shionne points out the utter absurdity of Gouredeno almost starving to death if they hadn't come across him, Alphen points out that there's pie dough all over Shionne's dress.
    • In Elde Menancia, he reveals he's snuck into the palace and stolen a top-secret recipe from its kitchens: Beef Stew. Later in the game, once Dohalim is with your party, Gourdeno is delighted about the opportunity to thank Dohalim personally for having played a part in the creation of the recipe. While flattered, Dohalim asks how he managed to learn this top-secret recipe from his former palace's kitchen. Gouredeno is silent in shock and regret and Shionne, not wanting to lose the chance at eating a new type of food, immediately asks what his latest project is to change the subject.
    • In Mahag Saar, he's braved the winds and the sands to find a mysterious concoction: the Vitamin Smoothie. Unlike the previous recipes, Shionne is the one to make this by herself. Gouredono tastes it and says it's: "Absolutely. Disgusting!" It turns out that Shionne only blended the lettuce without the apples or the lemons, because she didn't read the fine print at the bottom to do this. When Shionne does it correctly this time, Gouredon says, it tastes "Absolutely. Exquisite! Relative to before."
  • "The Stud from the Plains" is a hilarious Law-centric sidequest. At Pharia Ranch, the rancher tasks Law with collecting a uniform he ordered from a tailor in town. While initially reluctant, Law is suddenly game for it when the rancher mentions that the tailor is the prettiest girl in Viscint. When they finally arrive, the tailor immediately warns Law not to flirt with her before he can make a move and to add insult to injury, she takes a shine to Alphen instead and starts flirting with him. Once they return to the ranch, Rinwell and Law discuss his lack of luck with the ladies and they quickly discover that all the female animals of the ranch have taken a shine to him, to the point that a female cow offered him grass as a confession and her bull mate ran off in a fit of jealousy as a result (though the party solves that problem soon enough). As Law bemoans his charm being for everything but his own species, all the female animals of the farm shower him in affection then come to see him off.
  • A sidequest in Pelegion involves a Zeugles enthusiast wanting to seemingly make them into some kind of sign based on them. After you complete the sidequest, Hootle gets upset and seemingly attacks Law out of jealously for not having a sign made for it.
  • The "Her Place" sidequest ends a bit seriously with Kisara confiding to Dohalim that she questions if she is really needed in the group anymore, Dohalim reciting several poems by way of reply that address her issues. He concludes with a notably romantic one regarding how much he values her, which leads to a uncharacteristic blush from Kisara and during the ensuing dinner Rinwell noticing she seems very happy. The humor comes the next day when Dohalim claims he can't remember some specifics of the poems, even as he remarks on how inspired he felt:
Dohalim: "I'm afraid my memory of last night's poems are faint, could I trouble you to recite them back to me?
Kisara: "No! You may not! Remember them yourself."
  • The entirety of "Dahna's Tastiest Pancake" deserves mention because of how many funny moments occur.
    • The sidequest begins when a random citizen in Elde Menancia starts advertising "Dohalim Pancakes", which are just pancakes with the man's face on them. When Dohalim finds out, said NPC freaks out and makes some for him right away.
    • Rinwell proposes the contest, but right away states that Kisara and Alphen can't join, because Kisara (being the group's Supreme Chef) would just win by default, and Alphen would just make spicy pancakes. Instead Kisara is the judge. Law demands to know why he isn't included and gets ignored. He ends up contenting himself by emceeing the contest.
    • Shionne's pancake has a crap ton of sweets put into it, including what are essentially Pop Rocks. Turns out she put around three days worth of sugar and nutrition's in it, prompting Kisara to look utterly horrified (and later go on a jog trying to burn off all that extra energy).
    • Dohalim puts his artistic skills to the test and makes Dohalim Pancakes, but puts some kind of strange substance inside the pancakes that he brags about. He then calls pancakes overrated and promptly gets disqualified.
    • Rinwell realizes she didn't do anything special with her pancake and starts freaking out. Hootle then covers his face in jam and slams his face onto her pancake. She wins as a result.
    • Hearing mention of making pancakes again, Hootle freaks out and flies away.
  • As a culmination of the sidequests that lead to the Dahnan/Renan wedding, Shionne and Kisara miss catching the bouquet, to their disappointment. Shionne, however, takes the superstition that it means she'll never get married way too seriously and seemingly starts to go into another Heroic BSoD until Alphen rushes in to save the day. How does he do it? By gifting her a bouquet-themed gun he designed (and he made a similarly themed sword for himself). They're quite decent weapons for that point in the game too, and can last you the rest of the game if you decide to.
    • The wedding itself is as sweet and romantic as one could expect, and helps to bridge the gap between the Renans and the Dahnans. Nottio and Cagali truly get the fairy tale romance they always wanted. However, the fact Cagali attends in a beautiful dress while Nottio comes in full armor can certainly lead to snickers. Nottio is so stiff he salutes to the audience after being wed.
    • The translators must have fallen asleep during the wedding, too, because nearly half of the voiced lines are completely and totally different from what the player reads on screen. While normally just a somewhat incongruous detail, it can be utterly hilarious to see how off the mark the translation is. One line from Alphen only shares Shionne's name with the rest of the text.
  • Characters often make amusing or insightful remarks regarding a quest they have just taken on. Rinwell's remark right after accepting the Bibliophile quest, wherein the quest giver Tigrina repeatedly tried to get her to "donate" her magic books?
    Rinwell: I hate that woman!
    • And it only gets worse for Rinwell once Tigrina starts flirting with Law and filling her comments with double entendres.
  • Kisara and Lagill duel during a sidequest, and after coming out the victor and pulling out ahead of Lagill (they've been keeping track of several minor competitions to see who would come out on top) Lagill tries to save face by claiming she knows more about Migal than Kisara does. Kisara responds to this by proudly proclaiming she knows that Migal... had a mole on his left butt-cheek. Instead of disgusting Lagill, though...
Lagill: I... I had no idea. That's truly amazing.
    • Zareh is there to comfort Lagill over the loss, and when Kisara fails to attract Zareh's attention, Lagill claims that being Zareh's favorite means she won the contest. Seeing how determined Lagill is, Kisara lets this pass so they tie at fifty-fifty. Kisara then offers up her idea for a tie-breaker;
Kisara: How many moles my brother had?
      Lagill: Hey, that's unfair!
    • Really, the entire chain is amazing just because the player gets to see these two grown, mature women, normally the icons of chivalry and professionalism in Kisara and Lagill respectively, fall apart and bicker like two children. What's better, the fight with Lagill is played up to resemble the classic Tales Of Duel Boss set-up!
    • The reward for clearing this sidequest is a new title for Kisara; Migalpedia.
Migalpedia Description: Ever the expert on all things to do with her brother, Kisara is all too happy to discuss him no matter what looks she gets in the process.

Camping

  • Camping in Cyslodia can trigger a conversation where Alphen and Rinwell comment about Shionne slipping and falling. Shionne immediately protests that she never fell, just almost did.
  • Team Mom Kisara tries to decide what to cook for dinner.
Kisara: Hmm, what should I fix today?
    Alphen: Wasabi!
    Shionne: Rice!
    Rinwell: Ice cream!
    Law: Meat!
    Dohalim: Caviar!
    Kisara: You guys aren't helping.
  • After recruiting Law, the team go camping outside when they suddenly hear a mysterious, ominous "THUD!" nearby. They investigate and find out it's Law trying to do weight lifting with large, heavy rocks tied to his arms, but unfortunately, the knots gave before he could get a good workout in. After Shionne and Rinwell both question the safety and sanity of this, Alphen is convinced to join in, the two start an impromptu sparring session with rocks attached to their weapons, and once again, a rock flies off, and utterly trashes their camp. Shionne proceeds to angrily order the two of them to clean up their mess like a furious mother, and the two quietly comply.
  • Dohalim notices that Shionne is staring intensely at him. Alphen explains that she's the group's fashion critique, and Shionne proceeds to comment on how obviously high-quality and luxurious all of Dohalim's clothes are, as befitting a former lord. They talk about how expensive his rings are and Dohalim says they were gifts, "acquired cheaply". When asked to expound, that's in the range of 100-200 thousand Gald, far more than any player will ever have on hand unless they decide to grind the already lucrative fishing minigame for obscene amounts of hours. Law is shocked to hear it, since his iconic wolf-head shoulder-guard cost him 10 Gald, which was mentioned and made fun of much earlier in the game. He tries to calculate the difference, yells that those rings must have cost thousands more than his, before Rinwell corrects him and says it's tens of thousands. Everyone starts commenting about how if they sold them, they could build a mansion or never worry about food for the rest of their life. Dohalim then says everyone is becoming alarmingly interested in his rings.
  • The party notices a large smoke plume coming from the campsite that is so intense and noxious it causes Law’s eyes and throat to burn. At first, they presume it be some sort of poisonous gas attack, then they find that it is simply Alphen cooking dinner over the campfire...with an absolutely enormous amount of spices.
    • Even better is that in order to unlock the skit, you need to have Alphen cook Roasted Chicken. The effect of the food makes it easier for enemies to notice you. Meaning that Alphen's cooking was so strong that the enemies are more likely to notice you.
  • When you cook the Cheese Fondue for the first time, Shionne complains about putting cheese into a pot to dip your food in rather than dumping it all on your plate, as the latter would greatly decrease the "plate-to-mouth time", in her words. The rest of the party assure her there is no wrong way to eat food so long as you're enjoying yourself, and rest reassured, Shionne proceeds to dump a massive amount of molten cheese on her food. The kicker is the big smile on her face when she does so, while everyone else looks like they just witnessed a murder.
Alphen: ...I have never seen someone put that much cheese on anything.
  • Rinwell compares the party to one big family. Alphen and Shionne are the big brother and sister, Kisara is the mom, Dohalim is the uncle, and Law is... the pet dog, since Hootle already claimed the little brother spot.
  • Having Alphen talk to the other party members as his affinity increases with them can yield some hilarious results:
    • Law punching Alphen and hurting his hand on Alphen's armor.
    • Alphen and Rinwell playing catch using Hootle as the ball.
    • Alphen struggling to pick up Kisara's mace using both hands, while Kisara only needs one.
  • Many of the basic campfire interactions between Alphen and Shionne involve what's likely some of the most awkward flirting ever seen.
    • Their final bonding session even has this. Shionne asks if he "wants to make something together?", causing him to blush and ask "m-make what exactly?". She clarifies that she meant dinner, specifically the first meal they'd shared together. And afterward, when discussing what they plan to do after their journey is over, Alphen and Shionne get into describing a house that they can live in, standing side-by-side... before both freeze, realizing exactly what that's sounding like and quickly changing the subject.
  • If you cook Grilled Rappig Meat with Dohalim, Rinwell wigs out, asking you can possibly cook something with such cute little eyes, asking what it ever did to him. Dohalim simply points out calmly that they're perfectly edible, noting that it has become increasingly rare to eat them. The discussion turns to the preparation of the food, with Law only able to say that "meat is meat." Dohalim then comments that he once read in a book about rare delicacies about how to prepare an owl, leading Rinwell to comment that he certainly won't be trying this with Hootle anytime soon.
  • In the Ultimate Ingredient skit, Shionne finally manages to cook something for everyone by simply having all of her meals customized to each individuals tastes. When Kisara praises her for finally having understood the true meaning of being a chef, Shionne enthusiastically takes her hand... with predicable and painful results with Kisara down for the count.

Other

  • One of Dohalim's level up interactions has him state he no longer will be dead weight now. Alphen reassures him he isn't, only for Kisara to snark that he is in regards to doing chores.
  • You can make the game impossible to take seriously by giving your characters silly looking outfits/accessories that you can find for free with the Owl sidequest. A few examples include:
    • Giving Shionne things like dog ears and bunny tails.
    • Giving Alphen a left eye patch, given the fact that his right eye is still covered by the mask for a good chunk of the story. Though as established early on, he can still see out of the mask anyway.
    • Giving Dohalim just about anything. Especially spiral or smiley glasses.
    • Putting everyone in Farmer's clothes, with the hats liable to block people's faces if they're in close-up shots together.
    • Putting a Hootle doll on top of anyone's head. Or any doll period, for that matter.
      • Even better, the game actually references accessories and outfits now. For example, having Dohalim put on the fan-favorite accessory sunglasses (which have been popular since the accessory system was introduced) will have Alphen occasionally bring up the fact Dohalim is wearing Sunglasses at Night during camping scenes. When Dohalim reacts as if that's perfectly normal, Kisara asks Alphen to just drop it so Dohalim can enjoy himself.
  • The description for Law's armor (after he gets rid of the Bureau outfit) notes that the giant metal wolf's head shoulder pauldron was just a random thing he saw in the market and bought on impulse. Law brags about how he only got it for 10 Gald, Alphen is impressed, while Rinwell is horrified and says that it only went for that much as the merchant wouldn't be able to get rid of it otherwise. As mentioned above with Dolahim, the cost of it also comes back for another joke.
  • Though Rinwell usually has serious incantations for her Artes, especially Tier 3 spells which sound like serious prayers, she can also go "Blah, blah, blah, MAGIC!", "You get the gist!", and "Magikazam!"
  • In Ganath Haros, at the top of mountain-side ruins leading to Pelegion, you can have the party jump off a cliff, fall for several seconds, and have Law and Rinwell screaming and freaking out. Apparently, it was all Dohalim's idea. After the initial comedy, there's also a very long climb back up the rope ladder where the party even comments about how absurdly long it takes.
  • In Calaglia, if you stop by Ulzebek after a certain point, you can see a young woman begging the two chickens in front of her to lay eggs. However, it appears the chickens in question may be roosters, which isn't great news if you're looking for eggs.
    • For an extra note of funny, the woman is titled in the game as "Chicken Tender".
    • In Thistlym, you can find yet another woman again pleading with some chickens to lay eggs, saying she wants to eat something other than fish for once in her life. Though in this case, at least a couple appear to be hens.
  • From the random chatter following battles...
    Law: Did you see?!
Alphen: Sure did. The part where you swung and missed, right?
    Law: Not that part!
    • Another that's likely to get a laugh:
Rinwell: Wow, Kisara, it's so big!
Kisara: You- you're talking about my shield, right?
  • During the girls' portion of the Hot Springs Episode, Dohalim eggs Law on to go look at Rinwell, but the girls cotton on to what's going on. When the sequence is over, you receive a message that "Law failed to unlock the title 'Dirty-Minded Devil'!"
    • The Manager of the Hot Springs is... something else. His method of inviting Law and Alphen to the hot springs sounds like a man trying to peddle illicit goods, and his every word is said in an exaggerated, high pitch. He also laughs at random intervals, and comes off as being high.
    • Dohalim is very serious about his bathing. When Rinwell says the women should bathe first, he immediately responds with;
Dohalim: I think not. No one takes the first bath from me!
Shionne: Oh boy, here we go...
  • This, randomly sometimes when exploring an area with NPCs...
Law: Hey, Alphen, what do you think of that chick over there?
Allphen: Doesn't look like she really works out.
Law: I'm not taking about her muscles, you dummy!

Beyond The Dawn

  • Gourdeno is back, and the game goes all out to make his sidequests as silly as possible. The first one, 'Gourmet Saga: Wind of the New World' ends with Alphen and Shionne trying a special gnocchi with strawberries and rappig meat. While they taste it, images of the Elde Menancia wilds and Viscint's skyline are shown, as if to signify the duo are in heaven over the dish. When all three decide to recite Gourdeno's catchphrase, they spontaneously decide to start posing together, complete with a muscleman pose from Alphen and Gourdeno looking like he's preaching. The best part is that a Viscint Service Corps member can be seen to the left as they're all posing, staring at them in obvious confusion.
  • The 'A New Rival' quest has Dohalim hit upon a plan to decisively end Kisara and Lagill's rivalry - when Lagill predictably uses Zareh to even out their scores following a fight Dohalim has every confidence he can win, he'll tempt Zareh with treats to cut Lagill off. Though he manages to talk Kisara and Lagill into letting him fight on Kisara's behalf and wins just as she would, Dohalim's plan to have Zareh come to him backfires when Zareh adamantly sticks by Lagill, which just fuels the rivalry anew and causes Kisara to call the poor guy out.
  • Shionne is just as much a foodie as ever. When she hears from Kohl that their caravan transporting donuts has been targeted by zeugles to the point they've lost over a hundred donuts trying to distract them, her reaction is... concerning, to say the least.
Shionne: How awful! That's three full days worth of snacks!
  • The final sidequest is the party competing to develop a new drink to promote alongside the now famous Dohalim Pancakes. This time it is Kisara, Dohalim and Law competing with Shionne judging (Alphen correctly points out she just wants free drinks). Kisara makes a strawberry milk smoothie which Shionne likes but is a bit boring for a new product. Dohalim comes up with a viscous brown liquid. Despite its suspicious appearance, Shionne tries it and is surprised that it's a good savoury experience. Dohalim is promptly disqualified when he states he had effectively invented horse Bovril. Law panics and after a brief disappearance appears with a nice looking apple drink, complete with a fruit slice garnish. Shionne loves its pulpy texture and Law is asked how he made it. He literally smashed the fruit open on his forehead and wrung out the juice with his bare hands... and ends up winning the contest.
