Go To

Twins of Two Worlds is a The Owl House fanfic written by Zamarak.

Odalia, believing that they will eventually cause Amity to turn against her, decides that Edric and Emira need to die. Her attempt to do so fails, but the two are separated as a result. While Edric is taken in by Eda, Emira winds up in the Human Realm, where she is eventually adopted by the Nocedas.

Twins of Two Worlds contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Edric and Emira were pretty easygoing in canon. Here, they have to deal with the trauma of their mother trying to kill them when they were only five years old, on top of being separated at that.
  • Adaptational Badass: Edric starts learning Beast Keeping and Potions magic alongside Illusion magic as a kid, where he only officially started learning about the former two when he was a teenager.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Being the progatonists, Edric and Emira appear much earlier than they do in canon.
    • Odalia appears long before the events of Season 2.
    • Emperor Belos and Kikimora appear in Chapter 11, which takes place during the events of "A Lying Witch and a Warden".
    • Luz meets Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus during her first trip to Hexside.
  • Adaptational Explanation:
    • Luz’s trademark cat hoodie was originally something Manny got for Emira before he died, but Emira decided to let Luz have it after she outgrew it.
    • Emira told Luz that griffins vomited bugs, giving her the idea to make an “anatomically correct griffin”.
    • The "crown of power" King searched for in the first episode was actually a birthday gift from Eda and Edric.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance:
    • Willow meets Luz after the Covention as opposed to before she first visited Hexside.
    • The Owl Beast appears the same night Eda needs some potions from the Night Market.
  • Adaptational Protagonist: Edric and Emira share the role of the lead for this story.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • While Eda briefly mentored Edric in a Season 2 episode, the two were never that close. In this fic, Eda takes him in at a young age and becomes his new mother. By extension, this also means he's closer with Hooty and King.
    • Emira never had a lot of interactions with Luz in canon, but here, the Nocedas adopt her, making Camila and Luz her family.
    • Because they "died" when she was just a baby, Amity never got to know Edric and Emira, and is constantly compared to the two by her mother. When Edric meets her in the modern day, he starts to toy with her as a way of getting revenge for what Odalia did to him.
    • Luz and Edric eventually develop feelings for each other.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Odalia’s attempts at controlling her family were always more verbal than anything else. Here, she has little to no qualms with killing her two eldest children. However, given Canon!Odalia tried to murder Luz in Escaping Expulsion, to cut her off from Amity's life, very similarly to what Odalia's motivation is for attempting to murder the twins here (an effort to cement her control over Amity), this is ultimately Downplayed, especially when coupled with her canon counterpart's status as a Hate Sink to the extent of being willing to aid and abet genocide to begin with; it applies in the sense her actions here make her a more central villain to the plot.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Emira eventually forgets how to use magic in this fic.
  • And Then What?: Just as Emira and Vee are starting to get along, Vee asks what will happen when Luz comes back from "summer camp". Emira herself isn't sure what she can do, but asks Vee to trust her anyway.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Manny becomes a more prominent figure in Luz and Emira's lives for a few chapters set before his death in canon.
    • Edric befriends a bird who briefly appeared perched on the Owl House in the pilot, calling him Chuckles. Edric gradually starts to understand what he’s saying, which he initially believes is due to his prowess in Beast Keeping magic, only for him and Eda to realize that Chuckles is a Palisman, and one who has already bonded with Edric.
    • Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus become closer members of Luz and Edric's social circle.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Emira sees Luz step out of the portal door, it seems like Luz left the Demon Realm and now knows Emira is a witch, only for "Luz" to look very confused when Camila hugs her, informing the reader that this is still Vee.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Having lived with Eda for almost his entire life, Edric is aware of Eda's body parts falling off due to her curse.
Edric: (to Eda's decapitated head) Hey, Mom. Want me to babysit the body?
    Eda: You're such a dear.
    Luz: Eda! Are you okay?
Edric: Meh, happens from time to time. (grabs the hand of Eda's headless body, currently wandering around) Alright, this way, Mom.
  • Contrived Coincidence: When Emira is pulled over for speeding, she recognizes the cop as the one who found her and brought her to the hospital when she first came to the Human Realm.
  • Cool Big Sis: Emira gradually becomes this to Luz after a while.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 11 shows how Amity's life has been since Edric and Emira's "death".
  • Didn't Think This Through: Before she decided to kill Edric and Emira, Odalia secretly consulted Osran, the head of the Oracle Coven, for a fortune telling about Amity's future. Odalia never considered the fact that the only person Osran answers to is Emperor Belos, who would be made aware of such a meeting, given that it took place in his own castle.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Amity is annoyed by "Ed Clawthorne" the first time they meet, unaware that he's really her older brother.
    • When she realizes that Luz has been replaced by a shapeshifter, Emira immediately assumes Vee has sinister plans, when readers familiar with the source material know that Vee is perfectly harmless.
  • Ear Ache: Emira tries to cut her ears in an attempt to make them look more human.
  • Entertainingly Wrong:
    • According to Osran, someone Amity admires will be the reason she eventually turns against her mother. While readers will recognize this person is Luz, Odalia assumed this meant Edric and Emira were having a negative influence on Amity, which was why she decided to kill her two oldest children.
    • When Emira is hospitalized, the doctor's X-ray notices her bile sac and assumes it's some kind of tumor.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While Adagast may be using Edric and Luz as bait to kill Eda, when he learns about Edric's scars, he's genuinely concerned about how he got them in the first place.
Adagast: On that note, did you get them from your mother? Because that would be disgusting.
Edric: Wha—My mom would never do that to me!
    Adagast: Are they self-inflicted?
Edric: No! Why would someone hurt themselves like that? Can we go back to the gloating?
  • Foil:
    • Edric and Emira gradually go down different paths after being separated.
      • Edric is immediately taken in by Eda and finds a family with her, Hooty, Owlbert, and King. Emira escapes to the Human Realm and is taken in by Child Protective Services, spending a few years living with three foster families before settling in with the Nocedas.
      • Edric develops abandonment issues as a result of what happened, and initially worries Eda might give him up. Emira, while just as nervous about it at times, is more used to being abandoned thanks to the bad experiences from her last three foster families, and it takes a few years before she really warms up to the Nocedas.
      • Edric becomes proficient in magic thanks to teaching from Eda. Emira gradually forgets what little magic she knew before escaping to the Human Realm.
      • Edric is given a concealment stone to disguise himself so Odalia can’t tell he’s really alive. Emira tries to cut her ears to make them look more human, and later dyes her hair and gets contacts to hide her natural witch appearance.
    • Emira and Belos, startingly enough. Both of them got Trapped in Another World, grew to dislike magic following their experiences in the Boiling Isles, were ready to maim themselves in order to pass as a native to their new dimension and are left traumatized by the loss of a brother. However, Emira is more than happy to leave her past behind her to enjoy her new life as a Noceda while Belos is obsessed by his goal to come back to Connecticut.
  • Foreshadowing: In one chapter, Edric explains to Luz what happens to a witch when a basilisk drains their bile sac, that it'll leave them bedridden for a week. In the next chapter, Emira has Vee drain her own bile sac when she runs out of magic.
  • Forgot About Her Powers:
    • When a trash slug eats the portal door, Eda fights it for a few seconds before remembering she has the key which can instantly summon it.
    • Played for Drama in a later chapter, where Emira realizes she’s forgotten how to do magic.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Eda, King, and Edric actually swap bodies fairly often for fun. As Eda puts it, "It's like demonic possession with your loved ones."
  • Godzilla Threshold: In order to maintain Vee's cover, Emira lets her drain her bile sac, which hospitalizes her in the process.
  • Happily Adopted: Both Edric and Emira are happy with their respective foster families.
  • Hates Being Alone: Edric starts to develop a fear of isolation after his near-death experience.
  • Hidden Depths: Hooty is surprisingly great with kids, as evidenced by how good of a job he does babysitting Edric.
  • Humans Through Alien Eyes: When Eda gives Edric a New England Patriots hat for he goes to the Human Realm, she explains that as far as she can tell, the Patriots are a cult.
  • The Hyena: Come on, guess why Chuckles is named that.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: More than anything, Emira wants to forget her old life in the Boiling Isles, down to hiding her natural witch appearance.
  • Important Haircut:
    • A variant. To hide his identity from the public, Edric starts wearing a concealment stone that gives him orange hair like Eda, signifying becoming an official Clawthorne.
    • Played straight when Emira dyes her hair brown to hide its natural green color.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Manny still dies from his unspecified illness in this fic.
    • Vee still stumbles into the Human Realm and disguises herself as Luz.
    • Amity still develops feelings for Luz.
    • Edric still tries to find Amity's diary, though it's to show to Luz in order to justify his Irrational Hatred of her.
  • Infant Sibling Jealousy: Played for Drama. When Eda first brings King to the Owl House, Edric remembers that Odalia tried to kill him and Emira to ensure a better future for their little sister, causing him to assume that Eda plans to get rid of him.
  • Innocently Insensitive:
    • When Vee cleans out Luz's room with the intent of getting rid of her belongings, Emira views it as her trying to erase Luz's presence from their house.
    • Because Odalia keeps using their deaths as a way to motivate Amity to do better, Amity is very sore about the subject of Edric and Emira. When Luz, who genuinely wants to know about Emira's past, asks Amity what she knew about her sister, Amity, who still has feelings for Luz, hides her disappointment.
  • Internal Reveal: Luz learns Emira is a witch in Chapter 11.
  • Irrational Hatred: Edric gets a kick from tormenting Amity with much more intensity than his canon self. As Eda gently reminds him, any claim that Amity deserves such treatment falls flat because she was barely two years old when Odalia discarded the twins in order to focus on her, so couldn't have been involved in the decision.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Before Emira learns who Vee really is, the text refers to her as "Fake Luz" and instead of she/her pronouns, she is referred to as an "it".
  • It's All My Fault: Emira blames herself for Manny’s death, since the incident where she cut off her ears forced the Noceda family to delay their move to Gravesfield, which had a hospital that could have treated Manny’s illness.
  • Jerkass to One: Because she was inadvertedly the reason Odalia decided to try to kill him, Edric is very hostile towards Amity. It gets to the point where during a grudgby game, he attempts to break her leg under the pretext that it would teach her a lesson.
  • Love Triangle: While Amity still has feelings for Luz like in canon, Luz starts dating Edric first.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After learning that Vee isn't out to harm anyone, Emira regrets all of her earlier hostility towards her.
  • No One Could Survive That!: Odalia believes that she managed to successfully kill Edric and Emira due to how high the fall was, in addition to choosing to drop them into an area infested with trash slugs.
  • Noodle Incident: One time, Edric slacked off on his potion deliveries and threw a bag full of potions into a ditch, somehow causing a massive fire that took out three buildings.
  • Offing the Offspring: Odalia attempts to do this, but unbeknownst to her, she fails.
  • Parental Favoritism: The whole reason Odalia decides to kill Edric and Emira is because she wants to ensure a better future for Amity. Ironially, years later, Odalia sings praises about the two in order to motivate Amity to do better.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Instead of Eda, Edric is the first witch Luz meets in the Boiling Isles, and thanks to Emira's stories, Luz already knows about some parts of the Boiling Isles, like griffins and wild witches.
    • Edric is arrested by some Coven Guards and sent to the Conformatorium, so Chuckles takes Luz to the Owl House, where she meets Eda, King, and Hooty. Afterwards, they stage a rescue attempt and free Edric along with the other prisoners.
    • Edric also falls for Adagast's fake quest along with Luz.
    • Instead of Willow, Boscha is the first witch Luz tries to befriend and ask to go to Hexside with her. Of course, Boscha, being Boscha, takes advantage of Luz and essentially uses her as a slave to carry her books and take notes in class. While Luz isn't in danger of being dissected, she eventually gets fed up with Boscha's treatment of her, and Edric bails her out when Boscha's posse turns on her. The Detention Track students also befriend Edric and Luz and ask to study magic with them.
    • Emira manages to convince Camila to not sent Luz to Reality Check Summer Camp, just as Vee takes her place in the Human Realm.
    • Instead of Luz, Edric is the one to duel Amity, and even with the boost from the Construction Coven's power glyph, Amity still loses to him.
    • Because Luz didn't help Willow show Bump her talent for plant magic, Willow was placed in the Detention Track after using plant magic to fix the flowers in the school's garden.
    • Rather than go herself, Eda sends Luz and Edric to get her some elixirs at the Night Market, and unlike Eda, Edric immediately catches onto Tibbles' ruse, meaning they get the elixirs with no problem. The two decide to spend a little more time before heading back, where Luz gets her witch's cloak from Edric winning it for her as a prize. Luz then discovers the light glyph after seeing it in a display Edric set up using light spells. Unfortunately, the two arrive too late, and find Eda has transformed into the Owl Beast (something she's never done in front of Edric or King), so they work together to stop her.
    • Unlike in canon, Eda uses the body swap spell on herself and her kids for fun fairly often, so she, King, and Edric are used to it. During the latest body swap session where they include Luz for the first time, Amity ends up accidentally getting caught up in the spell. Edric gets King's body, Eda gets Edric's body, King gets Luz's body, Luz gets Amity's body, and Amity gets Eda's body. Thankfully, they manage to find Luz in Amity's body and fix everything rather quickly.
    • Instead of Eda taking Luz to the Knee to learn a new spell so she can avoid the Baby Class at Hexside, Edric takes Luz and the Detention Track students there to learn some more wild magic.
    • Emira eventually figures out who Vee really is, so the two work together to help the latter blend in more. However, because Emira consulted with Jacob before she learned Vee wasn't out to hurt anyone, Jacob manages to capture Vee far earlier than in canon. As a result, Emira goes to Camila for help and lets her in on the truth.
    • Rather than try to burn Willow's memory of her, Amity tries to burn her own memories, specifically the ones she had of her older siblings. As a result, Edric and Luz venture into Amity's mind to fix things.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Compared to canon, Principal Bump is far more lenient towards the Detention Track students for secretly learning wild magic, and even gives them a chance to prove themselves in a grudgby match. Of course, if the Detention Track students lose, they'll get expelled, because in Bump's eyes, they already broke the rules and should face consequences.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: When asking Edric about where he got his scars from, Adagast asks if his mother gave them to him. While Edric's adoptive mother didn't do anything to hurt him, his biological mother did.
  • Sanity Slippage: Emira's paranoia gradually gets the better of her the more time she spends around Vee, unaware of her true nature or why she disguised herself as Luz. It gets to the point where she seeks out Jacob Hopkins for help. Thankfully, she gets over this once she learns the truth about Vee.
  • Taught by Television: Emira decided to become a cheerleader in high school because movies tended to portray them as people who know how to fit in. She decided to date a member of the football team for the same reason.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Willow is forced into the Detention Track alongside Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: Almost every chapter is divided into two plots focusing on Edric and Emira respectively, though there are exceptions where a chapter will only follow Edric or Emira.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Edric uses his team's victory in a grudgby match over Amity's team as an excuse to insult her, which upsets everyone else, even Eda and Luz.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: While Odalia had a low opinion of her two eldest children, Osran's comment about someone causing Amity's "waywardness" led to her deciding that she needed to kill Edric and Emira.
  • Villain Respect: Once Emperor Belos learns about what Odalia did to Edric and Emira, rather than punish her, he applauds her "drive" and even fills her in on the Day of Unity.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Odalia turns her attempted murder of her own children into a charity foundation to fund the Emperor’s Coven.
  • Wham Episode: In Chapter 35, Emira tells Camila the truth about her being a witch and who Vee is.
  • What If?: What if Edric was raised by Eda while Emira was raised by Camila?
  • Would Hurt a Child: The very premise of the fic is that Odalia is willing to do this to her own children.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: After learning Vee isn't able to shapeshift again due to being out of magic, despite being able to do this for weeks, Emira has this reaction.
