Fanfic / The Resurrection of Rose

Go To

The Resurrection of Rose is a fanfic based on the 2019 adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep by AustinDR which is a sequel to the 1980 film adaptation of The Shining written and directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Shortly after the events of the film, a clan of True Knots, quasi-immortal beings who extend their lives by feeding on steam — a life force produced by children with the Shining dying painfully — orchestrate a dark ritual to revive the infamous Rose the Hat who wishes to have vengeance on Abra for her defeat back at the Overlook Hotel.

The story concluded on November 29th, 2019. A prequel story entitled Birth of Evil had begun. It catalogs some of the early beginnings of Rose and her fellow True Knots. It can be found here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Villainy: In the film, Rose was a A Mother to Her True Knots and was enraged when Danny and Abra killed them. Here, she no longer expresses any care for her underlings and goes as far as to kill a score of True Knots from other clans.
  • And I Must Scream: The Overlook Hotel not only compels people into becoming homicidally insane, but it also traps the spirits of its victim by absorbing them into itself to feed on their Shining. For eternity.
  • Arch-Enemy: Rose had grown to despise Abra and finds her as nothing more than a pest. The feelings are mutual on Abra's side.
  • Astral Projection: Abra does this in order to secretly eavesdrop on Rose and her minions. However, Rose senses her spirit and inflicts pain on it so that Abra's physical body can feel it.
  • Back from the Dead: Crow Daddy, Snakebite Andi, and Barry the Chunk are brought back to life by Rose.
  • Big Bad: Once again, Rose takes this role.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Rose tortures Snakebite Andi by burning her lower body with a branding iron in order to extract information on Crow Daddy's whereabouts from her.
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • Rose has the spirit of the Overlook work for her in her scheme for vengeance by promising it not only Abra, but the other children the human trafficking organization traffics to glut itself on.
    • The real Grady Sisters reveal that the owners of the hotel made a deal with the entity by offering it sacrifices in the winter.
  • Demonic Possession: Rose sends the Overlook Hotel to possess Abra into killing her own mother.
  • Disney Villain Death: Barry falls into the waters below after Abra fatally stabs him with shards of broken glass.
  • Eldritch Abomination: The Overlook Hotel itself takes on the form of a mass of burnt components from the hotel.
  • Enemy Mine: Crow Daddy is forced to work with Abra after Rose declares her intentions of destroying other towns after she was done with Abra's hometown.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Aldrich is repulsed at Rose for wasting True Knot lives for her experiments which gets him promptly killed for his trouble.
    • Snakebite Andi and Crow Daddy become repulsed by Rose after her thirst for vengeance took over her judgment.
  • Fantastic Racism: The True Knot tend to look down on humans as inferior and lambs for the slaughter.
  • Fantastic Slur: Rubes is an insult that the True Knot use in reference to humans.
  • Fat Bastard: Aldrich, who traffics children possessing the Shining ability for profit.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: Rose develops such a strong hatred for Abra, she doesn't think twice about destroying the multiverse once she realized that she was defeated by her in each universe.
  • Hate Sink:
    • Rose the Hat sheds her redeeming traits upon resurrection by massacring a group of True Knot despite them performing the dark ritual to revive her. She then takes over a Shining trafficking operation where she deprives several True Knot of steam; creates devices to rip the steam out of the children; and devises an orb that drives a small group of True Knots to madness and killing themselves. She abuses her resurrected clan — particularly Crow Daddy — and sacrifices one True Knot to the Overlook Hotel as part of a deal with it. She sends the Overlook to possess Abra Stone into killing her mother out of spite before releasing her legions of brainwashed True Knot onto the town and relishes in the onslaught of carnage. When Crow Daddy escapes assisting Abra and Danny Torrance, Rose tortures Snakebite Andi to extract information from her. Merging with the Overlook Hotel and becoming a large monstrosity, Rose murders Crow Daddy before creating a massive black hole to not only destroy Abra's world but all worlds in the multiverse.
    • Upon getting revived by the aforementioned Rose the Hat, Barry the Chunk levels a bridge, endangering dozens of human lives, in an effort to eliminate Abra Stone. He then takes one of Abra's classmates hostage, threatening to throw them out the back window of the bus if she didn't relent. He does so anyway despite her compliance.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Snakebite Andi and Scrappy Meg both turn over a new leaf after assisting in the defeat of Rose.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Crow Daddy uses his Shining to toss Scrappy Meg out of the way from getting crushed to death by Rose at the cost of his life.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Rose gets sucked into the black hole she meant to use to destroy all worlds.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Rose has several moments from abusing Crow Daddy to wantonly killing other True Knot, but her two bigger moments are sacrificing Lester to the Overlook Hotel's hunger and enlisting it into possessing Abra and forcing her to kill her own mother. She then tortures Snakebite Andi as a means of extracting information on Crow Daddy's whereabouts to her and coldly executes Crow Daddy upon learning that he was assisting Abra.
    • Barry the Chunk holds a student for ransom saying he'd drop him off the bridge if Abra didn't give up. He does so anyway.
  • Kubrick Stare: Rose does one after reviving most of her clan.
  • Lack of Empathy: Rose becomes so enraptured with vengeance, she cares little for her True Knot to the point where she performs experiments on them; brainwashes them against their will; kills several of them for the slightest inconvenience; and has the Overlook use its influence to keep those True Knots affected by measles in a state where they continuously decomposed and reassembled.
  • The Multiverse: Rose learns of the multiverse from the Overlook Hotel. Upon seeing that she had been defeated persistently by Abra, Rose decides she'd rather not live in a universe where Abra survived, ergo, she aims to destroy all of it.
  • Not Quite Dead: The Overlook's essence survived as a result of a small fragment of itself latching onto Abra when the building was burned to the ground by Danny.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Rose shifts towards this not content with just massacring the town.
  • One-Winged Angel: Rose successfully merges with the Overlook Hotel, becoming a large, black humanoid.
  • Parental Substitute: Danny becomes this to Abra in addition to her mentor. He mentions how Hallorann also filled the role during his childhood.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Rose only brings Crow Daddy, Barry the Chunk, and Snakebite Andi back because she deemed them as crucial in her plans for revenge.
  • Revenge: Rose the Hat's entire motivation is to kill Abra and go as far as to completely level her town for good measure.
  • Sadistic Choice: Barry the Chunk offers this to Abra by threatening to throw one of her classmates off the bus if she didn't give up. He does so anyway.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Abra, but not out of her own volition.
  • The Sociopath: Rose devolves into one after becoming hungry for revenge.
  • Take That!: The teacher in Chapter 10 has the students debate about whether a story they're discussing had any deeper meanings. Some students argue that the story is either about the subjugation of Native Americans or that it was written as part of some confession to involvement to the Moon landing hoax conspiracy theory. This is all in reference to the infamous documentary based on The Shining called Room 237.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Rose becomes a full on Omnicidal Maniac after discovering that Abra beat her in other parts of the multiverse.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The True Knot as in canon. More specifically, Aldrich runs a human trafficking operation where he oversaw the kidnapping of children with the Shining, and generally the murders of the entire families. Rose takes over the operation after killing Aldrich and devises machines that could extract the Shining from children en masse.
  • You're Insane!: Crow Daddy has this reaction in Chapter 6 when he learns that Rose is planning on merging with the Overlook Hotel to become the most powerful Shiner in existence.
