Fanfic / The Logia Brothers

Go To

The Logia Brothers is a One Piece What If? story that asks the question of What if Luffy, Ace, and Sabo were given Logia Devil Fruits by a being known only as the Sea Devil. As a result, Garp calls in a favor from Admiral Kuzan to get the boys some basic training in their new powers so they aren't a danger to everyone around them and in hopes of making them Marines.

Unfortunately for Garp, Luffy, Ace and Sabo have plans of their own.

It was written by Kairomaru and can be found here on FanFiction.Net and here on Archive of Our Own.

This fic contains examples of the following tropes, in addition to those already present in the source material:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Due to being an Ascended Extra, Mikita's backstory is explored more in Logia Brothers. For example, her dream of being a chocolatier comes from her family owning a famous sweets shop when she was a child. Her canon epithet "Courier" is because she got her first bounty working as a smuggler.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • All three of the titular brothers qualify for a number of reasons. First, Luffy, Ace, and Sabo all ate powerful logia devil fruits at a very young age. Second, Garp got Kuzan to teach them how to actually use their fruits. Third, all three know how to use Observation and Armament Haki by the time they set sail. Notably, Ace's bounty is nearly double what it was in canon at 1,050,000,000 beri.
    • The Straw Hats in general also due to Luffy training them in how to use Haki. By Alabasta, all of them have at least some ability in the two main varieties.
    • Thanks to Luffy's training, Vivi is an even more skilled fighter than canon, and even learns that she has Conqueror's Haki. She also gets the Sand-Sand Fruit after Crocodile's death.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed with Hatchi. While he still worked for Arlong and helped him enslave the Conomi Islands, he's stated to have slipped extra cash to people who can't pay their monthly tax to Arlong.
  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • Canon Luffy seems to be completely asexual while Logia Brothers Luffy is heterosexual and is in a relationship with multiple women. However, Nami comments that Luffy needs to have an emotional bond before being able to respond sexually, which is known as demisexuality.
    • Nami, Mikita and Vivi's sexuality are undisclosed, though Oda claims that Nami at least "has no interest in romance or intimacy at the moment" like most of the other Straw Hats. In this fic, the three are in a sexual relationship with Luffy as well as each other.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Akuma's meddling causes Luffy and Sabo to have Shock and Awe and Ashes to Ashes powers respectively as opposed to their canonical Rubber Man and Playing with Fire respectively.
  • Affably Evil: Nanashi of the Kuro Kari might be in the business of killing Devil Fruit users to get their fruits into circulation again, but he maintains a genuinely pleasant attitude towards others on the job. Once he determined Luffy's Devil Fruit wouldn't be worth the effort, he left without any hard feelings.
  • Age Lift: Vivi is two years older than canon, being eighteen rather than sixteen.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Umino Akuma is the avatar of the Sea Devil that created the Devil Fruits.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Rather than staying in Alabasta, Vivi decides to continue sailing with the Straw Hat crew.
    • Unlike canon where she was a minor Arc Villain, Mikita has a Heel–Face Turn and becomes a member of the Straw Hats.
  • Ashes to Ashes: Sabo's Devil Fruit allows him to turn into ash.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Luffy has managed to somewhat replicate the Shigan just by watching Garp use it.
  • Badass Longcoat: At Nami's insistence, Luffy wears one on Jaya to look more intimidating.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: After the three boys eat their devil fruits, Kuzan trains them in how to effectively use them, especially how to instantly change into their element on instinct.
  • Bring It: After managing to No-Sell Enel's lightning, Luffy tells him he'll have to do better than that.
Luffy: "Nice try, jackass! Next time, give it your best shot!"

  • Cassandra Truth: On Jaya, Luffy casually tells those who ask that his bounty is 200 million, which they don't believe as his updated poster hadn't arrived yet.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Luffy dominates Enel during their battle. Enel was unable to land any real attack on Luffy throughout their entire match and was on the backfoot the whole time.
    • The Foxy Pirates stand no chance against the Straw Hats when Luffy orders them to fight a normal battle.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Crocodile makes Luffy work harder than any other opponent he'd faced so far, but the battle is still pretty one-sided in Luffy's favor.
  • Cutting the Knot: Instead of fighting the Foxy Pirates in a Davy Beck Fight, Luffy orders the Straw Hats to fight them in a normal fight, which turns out a lot better for the Straw Hats.
  • Darker and Edgier: Not nearly to the extent of stories like Nine Minutes, but far more people die during fights than in canon, with the Straw Hats themselves killing most of their enemies.
  • Death by Adaptation: A lot more people die, partially because the Straw Hats and their allies are more ruthless about dealing with enemies:
    • East Blue Saga:
      • The Straw Hats kills off the Black Cat, Kreig, and Arlong Pirates (save for Hachi, whom Nami specifically asks be spared).
      • Nezumi is hanged by the Marines after his corrupt dealings with Arlong are exposed.
    • Alabasta Saga:
      • The Straw Hats kill the Unluckies, Wapol and his minions, Crocodile, Lassoo, Mr. 4, Miss Merry Christmas, Mr. 1, and Miss Doublefinger.
      • Mr. 5 is killed at Whiskey Peak by Nanashi, an agent of the Kuro Kari, a criminal organization that specializes in killing Devil Fruit users and collecting their powers for re-sale.
      • Mr. 3 dies on Little Garden when Broggy and Dorry crush him for launching a sneak attack on the Straw Hats.
      • Pell kills Mr. 7 and Miss Father's Day when they try to snipe Vivi and Koza to keep the fighting in the plaza going.
    • Skypiea Saga:
      • Satori and Shura are killed in battle by the Straw Hats.
      • Vivi kills Ohm during their clash.
      • Robin kills Yama for disrespecting the Skypiean ruins.
      • Hotori and Kotori are killed by the Straw Hats in battle.
      • Luffy kills Enel at the end of their fight.
      • Doflamingo kills Bellamy and the higher ranking member of his crew, just because Bellamy lost to Luffy.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Luffy fought Kuzan and, in spite of it being his toughest fight yet, managed to definitively win.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Foxy is so sure that he can get rival captains to accept his Davy Back Fight challenge that he didn't think of a contingency plan if another Pirate group didn't accept the challenge and decided to kick his ass instead.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: At Whiskey Peak, once Baroque Works learns just how high the Straw Hats' bounties are, Luffy offers that if they don't try anything, it'll be no harm no foul and the crew will simply leave after their Log Pose resets.
  • The Dreaded:
    • The Akuma is this to the World Government due to his unpredictable nature of causing chaos across the seas. Any sighting of Akuma puts the Marines on high alert as Garp reported to an alarmed Sengoku about it.
    • The Kuro Kari are feared by all Devil Fruit users who know of their existence, because they specialize in killing them and taking their fruits for re-sale.
  • Everyone Has Standards: According to Morley, Dorry's and Broggy's century long duel was ludicrous even by giant standards and he called an elder to formally end the duel.
  • Exact Words: When Masira confronts the Straw Hats over salvaging rights for the St. Briss, Vivi tells him that they haven't taken anything from any ships under the waves. Which is true, as Luffy and Usopp explored the ship and raided its contents before it sank.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: When Robin joins the Straw Hats, Vivi is reluctantly willing to forgive her, but makes it clear it'll be a long time before she fully accepts her.
  • Freakiness Shame: Played for Laughs. When Luffy, Ace and Sabo meets Aokiji as their new Logia trainer, they comment on how tall he is. Aokiji comically tells them that beautiful women won't date with him because of that if they don't knock it off.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Vivi uses Old Alabastan, which is displayed as Arabic here, as a focus for her Sand-Sand Fruit powers. It should be noted that Kairomaru did get in contact with a native Arabic speaker in real life to keep the words from being complete nonsense.
  • The Gunslinger: In addition to his slingshot, Usopp has a quartet of revolvers and a rifle which he received from his father, which he uses to great effect. In his trademark fighting technique, he juggles the revolvers in a way that allows him to fire all of them near simultaneously.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Mikita aka Miss Valentine joins the Straw Hats after her defeat on Whiskey Peak.
    • Marianne aka Miss Goldenweek joins the Revolutionaries after Mr 3 is killed on Little Garden.
  • Here We Go Again!: The second Robin mentions that she's pursuing her dream while trying to talk her way onto the Straw Hats' crew, the others all know that Luffy will immediately go for it.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Ace still eats the Fire Fire Fruit, but it's given to him by Akuma rather than him finding and eating it while starving on a barren island.
    • Sabo still joins the Revolutionary Army even though he wasn't almost killed by a World Noble. Instead, he deliberately seeks them out himself.
    • Word of God confirms Enel still has electricity powers, but his come from a powerful paramecia fruit rather than a logia.
    • Bellamy still picks a fight with Luffy at Mock Town even though Luffy's initial bounty is higher than his own.
    • Luffy still manages to No-Sell Enel's lightning, as this time Luffy was the one who ate the Goro Goro no Mi, while Enel only has a powerful lightning-element paramecia fruit.
  • It Amused Me: Akuma is motivated entirely by his desire to be entertained which is the whole reason he gave the three boys Devil Fruits. If Sengoku's comments are anything to go by, he's known to wipe out entire islands for his own amusement.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Hatchan being the kindest and most merciful of the Arlong Pirates results in Nami specifically requesting her crewmates show him mercy in kind when they destroy the rest of the Arlong Pirates.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • If Mikita only uses her devil fruit on one part of her body, she risks unbalancing herself due to the difference in weight, even though she can't actually feel the change.
    • Lassoo being given life by a zoan devil fruit means he can also be killed. Usopp removes him as a factor by shooting him in the head while he's transformed, reverting Lassoo back into an ordinary bazooka.
  • Meaningful Name: Umino Akuma aka Umi no Akuma translates to "Sea Devil" which is exactly who and what the man is.
  • Meaningful Rename: After Mikita joins the Straw Hat crew and trains to use her powers better, her epithet is changed from "Courier" to "Crushing Fists".
  • New Child Left Behind: Luffy happens to impregnate Nojiko shortly before the Straw Hats set sail for the Grand Line. She's okay with this, as it will be one of the first babies born on the island since Arlong showed up.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Similarly to Supernova (One Piece), Robin has this reaction towards Vivi when the latter says she thought that Robin joined Crocodile to be his queen. This time Robin even gives off some Killing Intent to it.
  • No Name Given: The Kuro Kari don't give out their real names to others, with the operative Luffy encounters at Whiskey Peak introducing himself as Nanashinote .
  • No-Sell: After Luffy blasphemes against Enel, the latter hits him with a lightning bolt, which accomplishes exactly nothing since Luffy's a lightning logia.
  • Noodle Incident: Akuma has at least once sunk an island with a tsunami.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: Luffy doesn't seem to even notice women trying to flirt with him unless they're already one of his lovers. Robin tests him by uncrossing and recrossing her legs while wearing a short skirt and he doesn't even glance down. Later, she keeps him from wandering off by swaying her hips as she walks and while Luffy does notice it, he only recognizes it as the walk Nami or Mikita use to get him to follow into his bedroom and thinks the walk itself means "follow me" rather than any attraction to Robin's rear.
  • Oh, Crap!: Foxy, Porche, and Hamburg have this reaction when Luffy doesn't fall for their trick and unleashes his conqueror's haki after the trio push his Berserk Button.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Nojiko ends up pregnant from her brief fling with Luffy
  • Original Character: The Kuro Kari, an organization in the criminal underworld that seems to specialize in hunting Devil Fruit users. So far, the only one to have any significance is a hunter named Nanashi, who killed Mr. 5 for his Devil Fruit.
  • Pet the Dog: Hatchan is the kindest of the Arlong Pirates, providing financial support to the families that could not afford Arlong's taxes.
  • Physical God: Akuma seems to be immune to harm even from the likes of Garp, can manipulate the weather on a whim, chooses when and where devil fruits reincarnate to when their user dies, and can forcefully awaken devil fruits that have been eaten.
  • Point of Divergence: Luffy, along with Ace and Sabo, getting their Devil Fruits through different means changes certain canon events:
    • Since Luffy had already eaten a devil fruit, the one Shanks stole is left uneaten.
    • Shanks never loses his arm since Luffy (along with Sabo and Ace) had already had devil fruits for over a year and knew how to fight with them, beating Higuma and his bandits by themselves.
    • Crocodile has functionally zero intel on the Straw Hats due to Luffy killing the Unluckies before they even reach Whiskey Peak. As such, he doesn't realize how serious he needs to take Luffy.
    • Thanks to Luffy's sheer power, the Straw Hats are able to force their way through Hina's blockade of Alabasta without Bon Clay having to act as a diversion. As such, he's able to avoid capture.
    • Because they don't get into a fight with Masira, he happily leads the Straw Hats right to Jaya.
    • Luffy decides to fight Bellamy in their first encounter rather than shrug it off, beating him then instead of later.
  • Polyamory: Luffy is intimate with several women who are also intimate with each other.
  • Population Control: Inadvertently by Arlong due to his extorting "population tax" which charged 50 thousand beri per child and 100,000 per adult every month. Knowing that the citizens of the Conomi Islands wouldn't be able to afford it if they had children, they swore never to have children again until they were free. This lasted for eight years until the Straw Hat Pirates sailed into town, after which many revelers during the three days of celebration did their damnedest to restart the population growth, including Nojiko who became pregnant with Luffy's child.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Akuma awakens Pell's devil fruit when the latter is carrying off Crocodile's bomb purely because he doesn't want the guard's death interfering with his plans for Vivi.
  • Price on Their Head:
    • Following their victory over Arlong, Luffy's bounty is double his canon one at the same point in time at 60,000,000 berries. The rest of his crew also gets bounties. Zoro gets 25,000,000, Nami gets 16,000,000, Sanji gets 20,000,000, and Usopp gets 15,000,000.
    • Following their victory over Baroque Works, Luffy's bounty is raised to 200,000,000, Zoro's is raised to 80,000,000, Nami's is raised to 32,000,000, Sanji's is raised to 45,000,000, and Usopp's is raised to 25,000,000. Of the new recruits, Chopper gets his first bounty of 18,000,000 while Mikita gets her previous bounty raised to 38,000,000.
  • Red Baron:
    • While Luffy, Nami, and Sanji keep their canonical epithets, the other Straw Hats gets new ones — Zoro is known as "Santōryū" (Three Sword Style), Usopp is known as "Quadruple Guns", and Chopper is known as "Beast Doctor". Mikita/Miss Valentine is already known as "Courier" when she meets the crew, but is given the new epithet of "Crushing Fists" after the events in Alabasta.
    • We learn the epithets of several of the Baroque Works members when King Cobra cashes in on their bounties — Daz Bonez/Mr. 1 is "The Killer", Zala/Miss Doublefinger is "Poison Spider", Drophy/Miss Merry Christmas is "Town-Collapser", and Babe/Mr. 4 is "Catcher-Killing".
    • Sabo and Koala reveal that Marianne/Miss Goldenweek was known as "Flag-Bearer of Freedom" before joining Baroque Works.
  • Relationship Upgrade:
    • Just before leaving Syrup Village, Usopp gives Kaya a Big Damn Kiss. Afterwards, she resolves that the next time she sees Usopp, she'll be sailing with him.
    • By the end of the Alabasta Arc, Nami, Mikita, and Vivi are all in a sexual relationship with Luffy, and each other.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Mikita's Devil Fruit doesn't affect her ability to move around, even though increasing her weight so much should at least leave her immobile on the ground. On the other hand, while she can run at the same speed even when she weighs ten thousand kilograms, she can't jump very well, something everyone just chalks up to Devil Fruit weirdness.
  • Satanic Archetype: Akuma is the manifestation of the Sea Devil who created the Devil Fruits. He spreads them around for the sake of creating chaos for his amusement.
  • Sex God: Luffy's sexual stamina is so utterly absurd that Nami and Mikita agree that Luffy having a harem isn't just a reward, but a damn near necessity to keep themselves from becoming overly exhausted.
  • Sexual Karma: On three different occasions (as of chapter 40), Luffy has saved a woman in some way and ended up having sex with her afterwards.
    • Nami and Nojiko have a threesome with Luffy after he kills Arlong.
    • Mikita joins Luffy's and Nami's relationship after she's cured of the Kestia infection in the Drum Arc.
    • Vivi joins their bed after Luffy saves her kingdom from Crocodile.
  • Shout-Out:
    • While on Skypeia, Luffy mocks Enel after the latter strikes him with a lightning bolt.
    • Apparently the Pirate code is the same for all pirates no matter where they are from.
Luffy: "It might be old, but you all have forgotten the oldest tenet of pirates. Take what you can, give nothing back!”
  • Star Power: Nanashi apparently ate a logia that turned him into a Star Man. Given his own comments, he was given his Devil Fruit the same way Luffy, Sabo, and Ace were.
  • Stripperific: The outfits Nami and Mikita wear in Mock Town, specifically designed to be as showy as possible to make an impression on the other pirates.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Despite the title of "Logia Brothers", there is little focus on Ace and Sabo of their respective career and adventure compared to Luffy's.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Every time Luffy mentions his crew failing to notice something with Observation, they all shudder as that means he's going to up their haki training further.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • All of the Straw Hats train under Luffy to learn haki. By the time they reach the Grand Line, they all already have bounties, as opposed to canon where only Luffy did.
    • Mikita learns how to use her devil fruit more creatively than simply increasing her weight to crush people beneath her.
    • Vivi get training from Luffy that makes an even more skilled fighter than she already was and awakens her Conqueror's Haki. And at the end of the Alabasta arc, she eats the Sand Sand Fruit.
    • Pell's Devil Fruit awakens when he's carrying off Crocodile's bomb. This was invoked by Akuma as to avoid his plans for Vivi getting Crocodile's Sand-Sand Fruit being scuttled.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Crocodile assumes Luffy is just another cocky rookie due to not realizing the boy has both a Logia fruit and Haki.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Enel kills his attendants and destroys his temple after Maxim is completed, declaring that Skypiea is no longer needed now that he has the means to reach the Endless Vearth.
