Old Mare Luna
is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic written by Leondude and Darkiplier1383 that is inspired by Old Man Logan. The story takes place in an Alternate Universe / Bad Future 500 years after The Beginning of the End, where the bad guys had won instead.
Old Mare Luna contain examples of:
- Adaptational Intelligence: Downplayed regarding King Sombra. While he is still overconfident in his abilities as he was in The Beginning of the End, at least he was smart enough to take out the Mane 6 when they tried to retake Canterlot and Ponyville.
- Adaptational Villainy: Flurry Heart, who went from a cute alicorn filly into She Who Fights Monsters. See Freudian Excuse and Used to Be a Sweet Kid below.
- The Shadowbolts were originally a team of Jerkasses that eventually pulled a Heel–Face Turn. Here, they are willing associates of Grogar.
- A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 12 focuses on Luna' family and how they are holding up.
- Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Implied to be the reason why Setter thought it would be a good idea to take down the villains.
- The Alcoholic / Drowning My Sorrows: It's heavily implied that Discord took up drinking to cope with his loss of Fluttershy.
- Anyone Can Die: A lot of important characters, both in canon and in the story, have met rather gruesome ends. Cosmos and Discord being stand-out examples due to being a pair of Physical Gods.
- Asshole Victim: Out of all the deaths in this fic, Sombra's one was probably the most brutal. But considering he was a Smug Snake who gladly killed as many ponies as he could along with tricking Luna into killing Celestia, Star-Swirl and the Mane 6, he definitely deserved his fate.
- Bloodier and Gorier: The deaths in this story are a lot more violent than they were in Old Man Logan, which is impressive considering how violent the original comic was.
- Break Them by Talking: Cosmos tries to do this with Discord. She underestimated how angry Discord would be if she destroyed Fluttershy's corpse in front of him.
- Body Horror: Time has not been kind to Cozy Glow. At all.
- Bond One-Liner: After Discord tells Chrysalis she should have gone for the head, Flurry Heart decapitates Chrysalis and says "good advice".
- Nightmare Moon, after bursting out of Tirek's chest, says to him "Congratulations, my lord. It's a filly."
- Composite Character: The lava demons play the role of both the Moloids and the Ghost Riders gang from Old Man Logan.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: When Sombra challenged Grogar's authority, Grogar brutally kills him with little effort.
- Deadpan Snarker: If most of her conversations with Discord are anything to go by, Luna's sense of humor has definitely become drier.
- Decomposite Character: While Discord provides the role of Hawkeye in the story, his relation to the Tonya Expy is instead given to Settler.
- Despair Event Horizon: After Luna became Nightmare Moon, Discord just gave up and calmly surrendered himself to Tirek.
- Eye Scream: There's a fair bit of it in the story:
- Luna's eye got swollen shut after a fight with a lava demon. She gets better, of course.
- When Sombra was killing Shining Armor, he managed to stab one of Armor's eyes out with a crystal.
- Grogar manages to blind Sombra with a spear before finishing him off.
- Discord stabbed one of Cosmos' eyes out with a unicorn horn.
- Expy: A fair few for some of the supporting characters that debuted in Old Man Logan. Gail for Scott, Jade for Jade, Morning March for Maureen, and Praiseworth for Tonya.
- Freudian Excuse: Flurry Heart had to watch as her parents were killed while Discord was trying to save her. Since that Discord spent most of his time grieving for Fluttershy instead of looking after Flurry Heart, along with her seeing what Equestria has become, this made her a bitter shell of her former self.
- Healing Factor: Both Luna and Discord have one, with Luna surviving a brutal beating from Tirek's goons while Discord managed to survive getting stabbed by Chrysalis.
- Heel–Face Turn: The Dazzlings are now helping in the resistance's efforts to take down Grogar.
- Heroic BSoD: Discord has one when Grogar brings Fluttershy's corpse to his doorstep. It took him centuries to snap out of it and even then, it's clear he still hasn't gotten over Fluttershy's death.
- He has another one when Luna's family was killed by Tirek's forces and Luna became Nightmare Moon again as a result.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Sombra's method of killing ponies. This comes back to bite him when Grogar impales him on one of his own crystals.
- Discord is also on the receiving end of this from Chrysalis. But since he's Discord, it doesn't kill him.
- It's All My Fault: Discord feels this way about not using his powers to stop the villains, thinking the Mane 6 had it covered.
- Mook Horror Show: Nightmare Moon inflicts this on Tirek's army.
- Mood Whiplash: Possibly invoked due to the author's notes saying he didn't want to fall into Too Bleak, Stopped Caring. One very noticeable example of this is when Luna, Discord and Settler are about to be executed and Discord starts singing Giggle at the Ghosties, with Luna and Settler saying the lines of Twilight and Rarity respectively.
- Mythology Gag: The lava demons and their leader Lavan were originally villains from G1.
- Along with repeating what Discord did in The End of the End, Cosmos was a villain in the IDW comics.
- Plucky Comic Relief: Downplayed with Discord, who has his his serious moments and his own angst to deal with, but he manages to hide it by providing levity after some of the more serious moments.
- Precision F-Strike: Morning March referring to the BrayStation as a "bloody contraption" when he was trying to fix it.
- Raise Him Right This Time: Luna takes Flurry Heart on as a companion after she and Sunburst's resistance turned her into a baby filly.
- Rasputinian Death: King Sombra got tossed around like a ragdoll before getting impaled on one of his own crystals, then getting his eyes slashed out before having the top of his head ripped off and having his now exposed brain skewered out.
- The Reveal: Similar to The Reveal in canon of Discord being Grogar, Grogar in this story is revealed to be Cosmos, Discord's ex from the comics.
- Sad Clown: While Discord still has his sense of humor, it's more to hide the fact that he still mourns for Fluttershy.
- Sophisticated as Hell: When Morning March was being told by Gail about a game where a pony can battle Nightmare Forces on the moon and how he thinks Luna might like it, Morning March tells him that Luna would probably rather talk to the Nightmare Forces than "frag" them. There is also him referring to the BrayStation as a "bloody contraption".
- Stepford Smiler: The residents of Cozy Glow's territory are this, with one of them being described as having a hint of fear in his jovial demeanor.
- Shout-Out: Given how fond of references the author is, there's bound to be a few.
- The Running Gag of Discord getting slapped in the face is lifted from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- Discord saying Sombra's overconfidence is his weakness, to which Sombra retorted by saying "your faith in your friends is yours".
- Discord telling Chrysalis she "should have gone for the head".
- Another Avengers: Infinity War reference is Chapter 21 being called "we're in the endgame".
- Bane gets quoted thrice. First time is the narration describing how Sunburst learnt the "theatricality and deception of stage magic", Chapter 22 being called "Let the games begin" and Tirek saying "peace has cost you your strength, princess" when fighting Nightmare Moon.
- Suicide by Cop: After hitting the Despair Event Horizon, Discord surrenders himself to Tirek so Tirek could take his magic and kill him.
- Thou Shalt Not Kill: Subverted with both Luna and Discord. While Luna had taken up pacifism and Discord has never killed anyone in his life, they both eventually get blood on their hands (or hooves in Luna's case). Especially when Luna becomes Nightmare Moon again.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flurry Heart, who has become cynical over the years thanks to Discord's neglect of her and seeing the state Equestria is in.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Discord, of all people, gives Luna two of these during the story. One for nearly letting the lava demons get their hands on his package, another for refusing to help him rescue Settler and Flurry Heart.
