Go To

Mushroom Wars is a currently ongoing Mario fanfic created by Kaiimi. It contains a mix of genres such as Action, Adventure, Humor, and Drama. The plot of the story is about Tatanga planning to do world domination and it is up to a large group of characters to go on a quest to stop him. However, since he is more powerful than everyone could imagine, they must go on an adventure to collect certain gems that will grant them access to the legendary Crystal Star Rod to help them take down Tatanga and his army. While all of this happening, multiple sub-plots take place as well, giving the readers a care for the characters and making the story more interesting and dramatic. This story is still in progress, but as of 128 chapters and 1,143,176 words, it is currently the longest Mario story on fanfiction.net.

Mushroom Wars provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: It's revealed in a couple flashbacks that Tatanga's mom one day had just up and left him and her husband, and that Tatanga's dad doesn't bother talking to him. It's also revealed that his dad thinks his son is a burden.
    • After hearing what happened to Roy while he was gone, Bowser sort of 'snaps' and becomes emotionally abusive to a few of his kids, and even smacks Morton in Chapter 60.
    • Lakilester is revealed to have an abusive dad in Chapter 123.
    • Clawdia's parents refuse to take her back into their home even after she tells them she's left Bowser and is with someone new.
      • Clawdia herself and her husband, Kenneth, make very questionable parenting choices when it comes to their daughter, Katia.
  • Action Girl: Princess Daisy, and it's justified in this story considering Tatanga was the one who kidnapped her and wrecked her kingdom years ago. Mona is this to an extent as well.
  • Alpha Bitch: Pauline and Wendy Koopa. With Pauline, it's possibly justified though because of her breakdown in Chapter 44 where she reveals that no one wants to be with her because they all assume she's bad news due to rumors and such.
  • Academic Alpha Bitch: Jojora. Goombario is the male version of this.
  • Ambiguously Gay: In Chapter 20, DK reveals that he was taken away into another room and was smooched all over by a bunch of female ghosts and said that it made him uncomfortable. Waluigi questions how exactly that is a scary situation and asks if he 'swings the other way'.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Chapter 7 title, "Troublesome Troubles".
  • Alone with the Psycho: Dixie with Fire Bro in the Luigi's Mansion Arc.
    • Mario with the Red Koopa Brother in Chapter 33.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Fire Bro seems to have an interest in Dixie, but freaked out in disgust when he (accidentally) saw Peach nude in Chapter 12 and constantly praises DK's looks.
  • Amnesia Danger: Fox McCloud and the rest of his team, for some reason, don't recognize Luigi, DK, Peach, and Yoshi in Chapter 15. They confuse them as enemies and attempt to defeat them. DK wonders what might've happened that made them not recognize their Smash buddies.
    • Fox and his crew's memory loss is eventually explained in Chapter 60, however, it's flimsy at best and the characters aren't sure whether to believe him or not.
  • Anyone Can Die: Ooooh boy, can they ever. It's called Mushroom Wars for a reason...
  • Awful Truth: Peach finds out that Mario is in love with Pauline and that everyone knew about it except for her.
    • Bowser finds out what happened with Roy at the hospital while he was gone with the main group.
    • Jojora reveals in Chapter 56 that Watt died a few chapters earlier when the bomb went off in the ship, which caused her to fall off the ship and bash her head on a floating box. However, this truth is distorted due to Jojora neglecting to save Watt when she was drowning and calling out for help and feels immense guilt from then on but refuses to tell everyone what actually happened.
      • The actual truth of what really happened to Watt is revealed in Chapter 68. Jojora tells it to Luigi after he finds her in the shower, losing blood from a suicide attempt.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: Peach, Rosalina, and Daisy mostly in that order, however, no doubt can these three be intermixed, especially later in the story when the characters are more developed.
  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: At the end of each arc there is a boss fight, but the one in the Pokemon arc stands out the most so far.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: In Chapter 18, when the group starts freaking out about splitting up in Luigi's Mansion, Daisy points out that it's too early in the story for any of the main characters to die. Daisy does it again later in the chapter and even lampshades it.
    • Toad does this in Chapter 9, saying that the chapter would be boring without any dialogue since they have to swim underwater.
  • Breather Episode: The Variety Show chapters.
    • Chapter 119 Bonkers! is a big breather chapter, as it's the first humor-focused chapter since Chapter 57's Variety Show Part 5 and calls back to the random and zany humor that was prevalent in the beginning of the story.
  • Butt-Monkey: Lakilulu, as she gets insulted and attacked by everyone for no apparent reason.
    • Waluigi is this in Chapters 41 and 42 and even lampshades it.
    • Dixie in Chapter 10.
  • Cast Herd: The story focuses on the group doing the adventure, the group at the hospital, and the villains at the island.
  • Celebrity Star: Lady Sasa, though her being an actual 'star' is inverted when it's revealed that no one has ever heard of her.
  • Characterization Marches On: Watt starts out as a fairly normal character during the beginning of the story, but once she joins the group for the adventure, her personality becomes that of an airhead and has remained that way since. Lakilester also starts out normal in the beginning, but later on turns into a douchebag and an abusive boyfriend towards Lakilulu.
  • Crossover: Plenty of them, and much more to come.
    • The group travels to Goldrenrod City starting in Chapter 28, interacts with many Pokemon, and even meet Whitney and Gary.
    • They travel to Hyrule and to the Spirit Temple and also meet Zelda, Impa, Link, and Ganondorf.
    • They travel to Rusty Bucket Bay from Banjo-Kazooie.
    • They travel to Mystic Ruins and Station Square from Sonic Adventure.
    • Charmy Bee, Amy Rose, Banjo, and Kazooie even join the group for the adventure for a short while.
    • Fox McCloud and his crew make a couple appearances.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Most characters have moments of this trope, but the most notable ones are Goombario, Goombella, Daisy, Waluigi, Birdo, Kooper, Kammy, and Dixie.
  • The Ditz: Watt and Peach.
  • Doorstopper: As of the latest chapter, it clocks in at 1,107,290 words. It's the longest Mario fanfic on FanFiction.net, and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon since the story reawoke from dormancy last year.
  • Dumb Blonde: Princess Peach. Goombella is a little bit of this early in the story, but begins to wise up a lot once the other characters join her group.
  • Fangirl: Toadia towards Luigi and Bombette towards DK.
  • Freak Out: In chapter 34, once Peach found out that Mario had fallen in love with Pauline and everyone knew about it except for her, she has a complete mental breakdown.
    • Koops has a major meltdown in Chapter 68 and continues on a downward spiral for a little while after that after he finds out that Koopie cheated on him for Kooper twice, many years ago.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Amy and Charmy in Chapter 44.
    • Roy Koopa in Chapter 44, though this is debatable, as the intense events Roy was involved with previous to the chapter may have lead up to this.
  • Held Back in School: Peach reveals that she had spent five years in high school, although the norm is 4, which makes everyone think she was held back.
  • Interspecies Romance: DK towards Rosalina and Bowser Jr. towards Toadette.
  • Jerkass: Waluigi, Wario, Bowser, Kammy, Wendy, Goombario, Kooper, Lakilester, Pauline, Kazooie, Tatanga, Beldam, and Doopliss. However, some of these characters become far less "jerkassy" later in the story thanks to character development.
    • Boshi is the literal definition of this trope.
  • Love Triangle: Peach/Mario/Pauline, DK/Rosalina/Waluigi, Koops/Koopie/Kooper, and Diddy/Dixie/Fire Bro.
  • Mind Rape: Subverted with Pauline and Kammy as they perform a spell on Mario to make him fall in love with Pauline. Once it's revealed that Mario was under this spell all along, some of the characters accuse Pauline of 'violating' and 'abusing' his mind like that.
  • Myth Arc: Tatanga plans to take over the world but it's going to be impossible to defeat him without some help (plus the fact that the island he's on is surrounded by a barrier and an army of Koopatrols) so the characters must go on a quest to collect nine gems that will unlock the way to the sacred Crystal Star Rod that will ensure their victory.
  • Negative Continuity: In Chapter 12, the judge says that the water in the 'town' of Wet-Dry World is breathable, which explains how Bleck and Toadiko were able to live there. If you've played Super Mario 64, you'll know that this is completely false, though the explanation was probably for the sake of introducing Bleck into the story quickly.
  • Nice Guy: Count Bleck, Bobbery, Luigi, Koops, Yoshi, DK, and Banjo. The Nice Girls are Tippi, Mimi, Toadette, Rosalina, Vivian, and Goombella.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Lady Sasa...do I really have to say what celebrity she's a parody of?
  • Parody Sue:
    • Lampshaded by Kammy in Chapter 30 when she accuses Rosalina of being one when she realizes that no one was making a big deal about using her magic at the last minute.
    • DK constantly expresses that he doesn't want to be seen as superior to everyone else since most of the characters look to him for physical support or gush over his looks.
  • Psychic Powers: Rosalina has shown she can move stuff with her mind, and sense certain 'presences'.
    • Larry Koopa eventually copies Rosalina's powers with the Mimic ability given to him by Gekikara.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Koops does this to Wendy in Chapter 29 after she insults him for losing a Pokemon battle against her.
  • Running Gag: Some of the characters tend to mis-pronounce Tatanga's name at times.
    • Toad's obsession with cheese.
    • Toadette's fear of bunnies.
    • Yoshi's catchphrase "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" whenever a fight is about to start.
    • The characters repeatedly call Tatanga's world domination plan generic and unoriginal.
  • Ship Tease: Roy and Mimi, though that seems to have gone away since Roy accidentally killed Nastasia, one of Mimi's closest friends.
    • Toadette and Bowser Jr.
    • Dixie and Fire Bro.
    • Bombette and DK.
    • Banjo and Flurrie.
  • You Are Fat: Wendy insults Flurrie for being fat a couple times. (Though, it's somewhat justified considering she is seen grabbing and eating many junk foods in Chapter 31 and 32, and mentions being hungry a lot).
    • Some of the characters like to poke fun at Wario's weight.
    • Toad implies this towards Toadette in Chapter 18 when he asks if she's gained weight and says that she'll get a salad if she's hungry, not chicken nuggets, unless she wants to end up like Wario.
