Mimic, and its many sequels, are Mega Man Battle Network fanfic written by RennyBanette on Archive Of Our Own and Fanfiction.net focused on the anime continuity of MegaMan NT Warrior.

A girl gets transplanted from our world into the body of one Chaud Blaze. Without a way home to her old life, she has no choice but to try and live out life here in this new world. Armed with the ability to perfectly copy any voice she hears, and foreknowledge of Megaman Battle Network from home, she's all set to make it here.

As it turns out, this knowledge does not prepare her for completely taking over a character's life. Who knew?

Mimic Reloaded

The original series contain examples of:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Shuuseki Blaze. He has no problems hurting Mimic, who was sharing a body with his son Chaud. He will whip his son with a belt, has no guilt over blinding Mimic with a knife, and routinely grounds his son or deprives him of food as punishment for the most minor offenses. This also extends to Protoman, who was programmed to be Chaud's older brother Guardian Angel by Keiko Blaze, Chaud's mother.
    • Proxy, Shuuseki's personal Netnavi, has no qualms about beating Protoman until the latter is a blubbering mess, in order to punish Chaud by proxy by having him witness Protoman being abused in his place.
    • While not a parent, the staff in the Blaze household all turn a blind eye to the abuse that Chaud is put through.
  • Adaptational Expansion: Chaud and Mimic's time in Netopia. While multiple attacks from the Asteroids happen in canon, most of the time anything other than what Lan fought was A Day in the Limelight for the extended cast. Here, multiple Darkloids that were not seen resurrected, such as Bowlman and Burnerman, fight against Chaud and Mimic.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Bass is this as of the second half of Axess. He has an Odd Friendship with the Hikari siblings and refers to them as his humans.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Protoman. While he is a stoic character in canon, here he starts to open up and develop a more friendly personality thanks to his interactions with Mimic. It is later revealed that he was originally created to be a guardian Navi by Chaud's mother, meaning he was supposed to have a more jovial and nurturing personality. When she died, Shuuseki locked away his original programming and replaced it with battle data.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Lan and Chaud are friendly rivals with one another in the main series, but as of the Mimic Stream Arc, they are brothers due to Dr. Hikari adopting Chaud once Shuuseki is arrested and found guilty of multiple crimes, including child abuse.
    • Bass and the Hikari family are usually enemies, but here Bass is welcomed into the family since he is related to them by One Degree of Separation thanks to Pharaohman. Pharaohman was created by Tadashi Hikari, father of Yuuichiro, so that makes him Yuuichiro's brother. Since Bass was created from Pharaohman's data, he is Tadashi's grandson and thus Lan and Megaman's cousin.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Ragdoll, a ragdoll cat that the Hikari family adopts. Justified as the shelter owner explains that her toddler named the cat thinking that Ragdoll, the cat's breed, was his name.
  • Adults Are Useless: Lampshaded by Mimic during the latter half of Axess. She is shipped to a police safe house to protect her from Nebula just in case they try to kidnap her again for her Dreaming of Things to Come ability, where she gives a rather blunt and verbal beat down to Manabe about them locking her away and how them locking her away and using her makes them no different from Regal, just that they don't torture.
  • The Atoner: Raika spends most of his time like this after finding out about Chaud/Mimic's abuse at the hands of Shuuseki. During the Beast Intermission he uses the time off he was given at the end of Stream to hunt down Keiko's grave to give Chaud a form of closure.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Before he disappears forever, Baryl tells Chaud that he is sorry for what is about to happen. Given how DUO initially intended to delete Mimic and decided last minute to instead separate her from Chaud mixed with some foreshadowing as to what is to come in the Beast Arc, one would get worried about what was going to happen to Mimic since she is from a Beyondard. Turns out it was about Shuuseki being arrested for child abuse after he beats Chaud one last time and beats him to the point Protoman almost kills him.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Chaud towards Mimic
    • Lan towards Chaud and Mimic, once he finds out that he's a few months older (Lan was born in June, Chaud and Mimic share their birthday with another holiday: Christmas).
    • Protoman towards Arcadia and his both of operators.
    • Ironically, Megaman towards Lan despite not being Hub in the anime continuity and being only a few months old.
    • Bass towards the Hikari siblings before he evolves into a Papa Wolf come Stream.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Serenade and the Village Netnavis come Beast when the Beyondard armies come to try and take Megaman and Protoman.
  • Canon Foreigner: Arcadia was originally an unnamed navi Chaud fought in the N1 Grand Prix. Come Mimic's own turn at the tournament, she ends up taking him in. This leads to him becoming a long term major character.
  • Cat Folk: Protoman becomes one of these when he becomes a Virus-Navi thanks to a mixture of the Poltergeist and Cat viruses. This trait sticks around even after he becomes Dark Protoman. Chaud and Mimic become this as well as a side effect of crossfusion.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Lan is this to Mimic before she gets her own body and still thinks that she is Chaud. Megaman becomes this to the Hikari family.
  • Distressed Dude: Chaud, while Mimic is in control of his body, during moments like Shuuseki's abuse and Regal's kidnapping.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Mimic did not like fish before getting cat-like traits from crossfusing with Protoman.
  • Dub Name Change: Almost everyone is using their names from the dub up to Axess. People who did not receive a localized name, such as Shuuseki, keep their original Japanese names. Strangely enough, some people such as Keifer and Manuela, who got names in the dub, are referred to their original Japanese names Kifune and Manabe. While they recevied names in the dub of the games, anyone appearing after Axess are referred to by their Japanese names as well.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: How Mimic initially frames her knowledge of the events of the anime and what will happen. This makes her a target for Nebula.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Protoman. He has no qualms about eating viruses and even Zoanoraoids come Beast.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Because of Mimic taking over Chaud's body and thus a personality change that everyone attributes to Chaud's acciddent, Lan and friends have a better bond with Chaud and Mimic both.
      • Because Mimic/Chaud have a better relationship with Lan and his friends, Protoman has a better friendship with Megaman and his friends as well, which leads him to be absolutely devastated when Megaman is deleted.
    • Protoman has a stronger bond with both Chaud and Mimic since he becomes a witness to Shuuseki's cruelty towards them, going as far as to go on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Airman when the Gospel Netnavi tries to kill his operators by filling a room with gas.
    • By playing video games with Mimic, Protoman develops more of a friendly and outgoing personality and makes strategies based around various skill trees from video games.
    • Since Mimic did not have the same level of training as Chaud, she cannot command Protoman when Count Zap messes with the display during their match and is defeated. She get put back in the tournament due to the lottery.
    • Due to Mimic's inexperience with netbattling, she loses to Lan in the N1 Grand Prix finals, making Lan the winner instead of runner up like in canon.
    • Protoman gets permanently infected with the Cat Virus, meaning that certain battlechips such as Minibomb and Ratty are useless to him.
    • Mimic runs into Anetta in the hospital, becoming her friend. When Silk is still deleted despite everyone's best efforts, Anetta is more understanding and does not hold Protoman responsible for his Mercy Kill.
    • Regal finds out about how Chaud's dreams (Mimic's memories of the anime) are prophetic and kidnaps Mimic instead of Anetta, having Ms. Yuri torture her to get the secrets of her dreams out.
      • During the final battle, one of Regal's aims is Mimic, which causes all of her collective friends along with Sci-Labs to rally around and protect her.
    • Bass ends up having a bond with Mimic and her Netnavis when he starts sneaking over to play Skyrim with them. This leads to him becoming a main character starting at the final battle against Regal instead of disappearing after his battle with Slur like in canon.
    • DUO does not erase the memories of the events of Stream, meaning that everyone remembers that Lan and his friends saved the planet.
    • Once she reveals where she really came from, Mimic freely discusses the Megaman franchise as a whole, giving Lan the idea to find the data of Netnavis that Megaman had a Beast Cross with once they go into the Beyondard.
    • When Famous' ex-girlfriend visits, Mimic stops Maylu from trying to get the two back together, thus letting Makoto and Famous get Makoto's program fixed faster since there are no interruptions.
    • Mimic stops Yai from overheating the Radical Display projector during one of her tantrums by threatening to arrest her, as anything that happens as a result would be considered assault.
  • The Gadfly: Lan, Mimic, Chaud, and Protoman.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Bass starts his friendship with Mimic by sneaking over to play Skyrim.
  • Happily Adopted: Mimic as of the beginning of the Stream Arc when DUO separates her from Chaud and gives her a body. Chaud becomes this by the ending of the Stream Arc, cementing his place in the Hikari family as of the end of Beast - Intermission.
  • In Medias Res: Mimic ends up in Chaud's body sometime after Chaud first met Lan but before the N1 Grand Prix.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Mega Man is still deleted by Pharaohman. He gets better but still.
    • Lan still goes on his world tour trip despite winning the N1 Grand Prix, but only because Mimic gave it to him since as acting Vice President of a corporation, she could not take time off and thus the prize was a moot point for her.
    • Silk is still deleted, but Anetta and Mimic's friendship from before the incident smooths things over and Anetta does not seek revenge.
    • Protoman still becomes Dark Protoman.
    • Chaud still stays in Netopia for a majority of Stream since he went back to Shuuseki and resumed his place as Vice President of his family's company after he got his body back and Mimic got her own.
    • Dr. Hikari still gets captured by Dr. Regal during the Program of Light and Darkness Arc.
  • Intergenerational Friendship:
    • Like in canon, the members of World Three and the main cast of children.
    • Played with concerning Bass as he was created from the remains of Pharaohman, who is arguably one of the oldest Netnavis in the series.
    • The crossfusion team of the future with Baryl and Colonel.
  • Insistent Terminology: Protoman is NOT a cat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Bass.
  • Media Transmigration: The whole premise of the series. Mimic is originally a girl from our world who takes over Chaud's body.
  • The Nicknamer: Mimic and Protoman. Mimic usually nicknames minor characters, such as Ribbita, while Protoman uses nicknames regarding people and Netnavis that he does not know the name of and needs to put a name to a face to remember them.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Mimic and the Netnavis are not above fighting over who gets to use what character in Pokken Tournament.
    • Chaud actually finds some of the memes Mimic quotes when in control of his body pretty funny.
    • Protoman will follow up one of Mimic's memes with the appropriate response.
  • Odd Friendship: Bass and the Hikari siblings. It starts with Mimic at first, but his friendship soon extends to Chaud, Lan, and the Hikari family Netnavi's as a whole.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Lan and the rest of his friends find Chaud's bahavior after being possessed by Mimic a bit odd given how arrogant he seemed during their first meeting. They initially brush this off as a side effect of the accident that cost him his eye not knowing that his father Shuuseki was the one behind the accident in the first place.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot:
    • Protoman when he asks what kind of idiot would program Pharaohman when Dr. Hikari, the son of the man who programmed Pharaohman, is in earshot.
    • Raika for a majority of the Axess series and the Beast Intermission.
  • Papa Wolf: Dr. Hikari and Bass towards the Hikari children.
    • Played with concerning Protoman, who becomes violently protective of Chaud and Mimic, thought that could be a case of Big Brother Instinct.
  • Popcultural Osmosis:
    • Many game franchises such as Skyrim, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and Legend Of Zelda are present in the version of Megaman NT Warrior Mimic lands in.
    • Vocaloids once existed before they became outdated due to Netnavi technology. It's thanks to Mimic's love for the franchise that Chaud gets inspired to organize a comeback concert for them, helping upgrade the software so the Vocaloids are independent like Aki.
    • Once Mimic has her own body, she introduces the others to various video games franchises that she likes like Pokken Tournament.
      • Lan becomes a fan of the Legend of Zelda franchise.
      • Maylu enjoys on Animal Crossing.
      • Mimic explains Warrior Cats to Protoman. He insists on calling all animals he hunts in the Beyondard 'fresh-kill' and starts referring to himself as a warrior cat.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Ragdoll, Mimic's emotional support cat. Anetta gets one in Plush, her pet parrot.
  • Sharing a Body: The situation Mimic and Chaud are in until the beginning of Mimic: Stream. For the most part, it's not too bad for them.
  • Serious Business: Laika and dessert, so much so that having it taken away is a punishment and when he is offered a reward for saving the Earth after Stream, he asks for the option to choose whatever dessert he wants from the mess hall for a certain amount of time.
  • Ship Tease: Protoman and Crescendo, a Virus Netnavi hybrid from Serenade's village.
  • Shrinking Violet: Arcadia in the beginning.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Bass and Protoman. He tones down come Beast when it comes to Trill. Mimic is this too, with people constantly reminding her to watch her language.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Mimic. This gets a few laughs from people as proven when she first meets Raika.
  • The Stations of the Canon: While the series does follow this, Mimic questions whether or not she should interfere with certain events since they worked out fine in the anime canon, such as events that happen during Lan's trip around the world.
  • Sweet Tooth:
    • Chaud, as in canon, takes his coffee with ten sugars.
    • Raika considers dessert to be serious business.
  • Trademark Favorite Food:
    • Lan and curry, as in canon.
    • Mimic and noodles, spicy paprika noodles in particular, so much so that Yahoot puts noodles on the menu for #1 curry.
    • Played for laughs at first, but Protoman and Zoanoroids.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Bass.
  • Took a Level in Kindness:
    • Chaud and Protoman, with Chaud due to being stuck in his body while Mimic controlled it and Protoman becoming more involved in his operators life outside of battles.
    • Raika softens up earlier than in canon starting with a My God, What Have I Done? moment when he finds out about Shuuseki's abuse.
    • World Three gets this after Chaud is disowned by Shuuseki at the end of Part 1. Mimic now gets all of her meals for free at #1 Curry since they fed her when she was living on the streets for a few days post-disownment.
    • Bass.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: The first Mimic begins with the titular character waking up in a room that's not her own, much to her confusion.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: When Mimic reveals that she in from a Beyondard and starts explaining the Battle Network franchise, this is the reaction of many.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Mimic learns this the hard way. Despite her attempts to avoid certain big pit falls, such as the entirety of the Dark Protoman arc in Axess, it happens anyway.
