"There can only be one King."

Armed with memories of a world once perceived as little more than fiction and a Quirk unlike anything this fantastical world has ever seen before... there can be no other course than to bring an end to the greater evils to come before they have the chance to rise.

But when the road ahead of him is not the familiar path he knows, Itsuki Marumaru will soon realize that while the Golden Age of Heroes is coming to an end… a new era is on the rise…

Heir to the King is a My Hero Academia fanfic containing elements from a few other franchises, most notably Godzilla.

It can be found on Spacebattles, Fanfiction.net, and AO3.

Heir to the King provides examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Whether thanks to Itsuki’s involvement in the entrance exam, or through faults of their own, some students don’t make the cut into Class 1-A.
Vlad King: At least it’s a better answer than what that one candidate wrote under sex.
    Present Mic [guffawing]: Yes please!
  • Alternate Universe: Kind of a given for Itsuki whose previous life saw his current one as a work of fiction. Though there are hints that there are far more differences than what his previous life had seen.
  • Behemoth Battle: Itsuki versus the USJ Nomu AKA King Ghidorah versus Hedorah.
  • Bilingual Dialogue: A few instances, notably with Tiffany Zumwalt who speaks her native German and a few other languages.
  • Bizarro Universe: Much to Itsuki’s surprise, Star Trek is classic literature alongside Star Wars, which is also apparently extremely popular in Japan for not-so-obvious reasons, while Animorphs is a multi-season television show that earned a theatrical epilogue.
    Itsuki: What.
  • Body Horror: Par for the course for most Nomu but for the one that attacks the USJ, it is heavily hinted that not only is the Sludge Villain a major contributor to its overall form and mentality, but it also has Aoyama’s Navel Laser as well.
  • Breath Weapon: Itsuki breathes lightning and can even channel the electricity within his mouth to mimic the properties of a rail gun.
  • Collateral Damage: Contrary to how things went down in canon, the attack at the USJ does have a casualty count. Admittedly, a major of it was the fault of Shigaraki and the Nomu but a fair share were casualties of No. 13’s Black Hole and Itsuki going on a rampage.
  • Creepy Good: Itsuki’s “hero costume” is rather terrifying since it mostly consists of him partially transforming into a Draconic Humanoid. There’s also the fact that he doesn’t so much smile as bares his very sharp teeth.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Itsuki’s fight with the Nomu is this though, to be fair to the Nomu, they do gain a brief advantage when they reveal another Quirk that Itsuki instantly recognizes from canon, and is, understandably, put onto the backfoot for a while as a result.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Though he already suspected that some things were likely to change due to his mere existence, Itsuki is caught entirely by surprise at the USJ when not only an entirely different Nomu appears but that the leader of the attack is a girl named Akane Shigaraki.
  • For Want Of A Nail: A few instances, primarily during the USJ Invasion.
    • Whomever is working for The League of Villains inside of U.A. was able to grab far more information on the students of Class 1-A than in canon, which allowed them to specifically draft teams whose Quirks could trump, if not outright overcome their specific targets.
    • Rather than a Nomu that was a monstrous match to All Might, the one that was brought to the USJ turns out to be none other than Hedorah.
  • Groin Attack: How Fumiko Sato handles some of the villains during the USJ attack. With her opening move being an uppercut so strong it sends the leader of the group flying and WITHOUT her Quirk activated to boot.
  • In Spite of a Nail: A few instances scattered throughout.
    • In the hero vs. villains mock battle, Izuku still ends up going solo against Bakugo though he does manage to royally tick him off more than he did in canon.
    • Despite attaining more information on Class 1-A, the attack at the USJ takes a sharp turn via, Itsuki shocking the heck out of Kurogiri who ends up sending some students to entirely different areas than what was originally planned and thus had an easier time handling their opponents.
  • Large and in Charge: Itsuki is the tallest in Class 1-A and though he didn’t specifically aim to do so, he becomes the Class President with Tiffany, the second tallest girl after Momo, as his Vice-President.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Itsuki’s human form has draconic feet and a pair of serpentine tails topped with spiked tips. Some of his other features tend to change and warp with his emotions, particularly when he doesn’t smile and instead bares his teeth.
  • Magic Pants: Averted. Itsuki’s clothes are all composed of specialized materials that stretch and shrink when he transforms but some materials, such as shoes, get shredded.
  • Meaningful Name: A lot of the original characters’ have names that are thematic either to their personalities, Quirks, or elements yet to be revealed. Because a lot of Japanese names depend on the kanji used, the author specified both their actual spellings and their direct meanings in supplemental pages.
    • Itsuki Marumaru (まるまる一希) "〇〇" & "One & Only Hope."
    • Yōsei Kurokage (黒い影妖精) "Black Shadow Fairy"
    • Tiffany Zumwalt — "Manifestation of God by the Forest"
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: What Itsuki starts to believe he has done simply from existing when he realizes one of the components for the Nomu that attacks the USJ is Aoyama.
  • No-Sell: Itsuki is able to not only withstand the Nomu’s poisonous gases but was able to survive being completely engulfed by its highly acidic body as well.
  • Oh, Crap!: Itsuki’s reaction upon sighting a Nomu that, while different from the one in canon, is nonetheless one that he recognizes as Hedorah the Smog Monster.
  • One-Hit KO: Hagakure ends up getting knocked unconscious during the entrance exam. Itsuki himself only noticed due to the encroaching dust cloud moving around her.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Shoji and Koda both have front row seats to No. 13 uses their Black Hole to kill an entire group of villains in the Flood Zone they were dropped into without a hint of remorse or hesitation.
  • Original Character: Quite a few in just Class 1-A alone, many of whom are arguably an Expy of already established characters and/or their power-sets.
    • Fumiko Sato — Rikudo’s (non-canon) twin sister whose physical appearance, as well as her hero costume, are a strong nod to another powerful female fighter.
    • Katsura Mafune — Aside from being named after another cyborg, her Quirk also seems to be a nod towards a certain blonde half-pint.
    • Tiffany Zumwalt — Her appearance seems to take after a certain redhead and her Quirk, is outright called “Absolute Territory.”
    • Yōsei Kurokage — His Quirk is, essentially, an exact copy of Tsuyu’s insomuch that where her powers are revolved around different species of frogs, his are based on a variety of insects. His hero costume is also a nod to a certain insect-themed hero.
  • Past-Life Memories: Of a sort. Itsuki does not really recall the life he had previously with any true clarity, but he does recall the majority of events that are set to transpire. In point of fact, he makes it a point to specifically call any memories or recollections of his previous life as belonging to “That One” instead of himself.
  • Required Secondary Powers: A common trait amongst transformation Quirks that are of a more monstrous persuasion is that they often come with a variety of powers and abilities.
  • Self-Insert Fic: Itsuki is noted as being a self-insert insomuch that he has memories not of a life previously lived, but of reading/watching the events set to transpire in the My Hero Academia universe as they would occur without him. As such, he never refers to his previous life as his but rather “That One’s.”
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Seemingly Itsuki’s motivation for involving himself in the plot though whom he is specifically targeting, and what sacrifices he is willing to make to do so, remain to be seen.
  • Slasher Smile: Itsuki never smiles. He bares his teeth.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Fumiko is this so long as she’s not under the effects of her Quirk, particularly when threatening villains with extreme bodily harm that Momo notes as likely breaking more than a few laws of the Geneva Convention.
  • Super-Senses: What a few of the teachers at U.A. surmise as a part of Itsuki’s Quirk, which apparently is not that uncommon amongst transformation-types.
  • Weredragon: What Itsuki’s Quirk is in the broadest of strokes considering it is no mere dragon that he turns into…
  • Would Hurt a Child: Shigaraki’s entire reason for invading the USJ, and by extension U.A., was so that she would have the chance to kill “The Heir” Izuku Midoriya.
