Fallen Kingdom is a completed Super Mario Bros. fanfic by 7King Bowser7.

After Mario and Princess Peach were finally wed, it seemed like nothing could shatter their happiness—until Bowser attacked with his entire army. In the final decisive battle, Mario was killed and Peach went missing, and the world fell under Bowser's claws. The Mushroom Kingdom was no more, and in its place was the vast Koopa Empire.

Now, 20 years later, Luigi steps up to dismantle the Koopa Empire castle by castle, joined by Cobal the Yoshi kid. An uphill battle awaits them, but with in-fighting among the empire weakening it from within, this may be the only chance at restoring peace to the Mushroom World once and for all.

The story can be found here.

Not to be confused with Fallen King, a Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfic with a similar premise and name. Nor should it be confused with the Minecraft music video series of the same name.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Amplifier Artifact: Just like in its game of origin, the Dreamstone can be used to greatly empower the wielder. Mario and Bowser split it in half to take the fight to Rosalina, and Bowser later uses its full strength to defeat her.
  • Apocalypse How: Antonio plans a Societal Disruption to remove magic, wishes, and anything remotely powerful, including the people who wield such power.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Skallz Fortiscule wears a fancy white suit and fedora, and is powerful enough to mow down many strong heroes at the same time.
  • Big Bad: Emperor Bowser, having successfully killed Mario, now rules over the remains of the Mushroom Kingdom as the Koopa Empire, and Luigi is the head of the resistance out to overthrow him. Until Chapter 38 reveals that Antonio/Grand Star, head of the Seven Stars, planned out the course of Mario and Bowser's conflict, with ultimate plans to converge the Star Children and create a world of silence where nothing in the world has powers.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In the Second Battle of Toad Town, despite Luigi's strengths the heroes are outnumbered until the prison escapees arrive to turn the tide.
    • Larry's battle with Luigi's army is completely hopeless for them until a freed Koops joins the fight and takes out Larry.
  • The Brute: Roy is strong and loves to intimidate others, but is lacking in the brains department.
  • The Bully: As a teen Roy loved to bully those weaker than him, including his siblings; his tendencies only got worse in adulthood. Not for nothing he was nicknamed "Prince Bully."
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: Peach goes missing at the start of the story, and Bowser's goal for the next 20 years is finding her. Chapter 45 shows she's in Antonio's clutches, and chapter 46 has her finally reappear in the flesh.
  • Conflict Killer:
    • The Seven Stars' announcement of their Evil Plan causes the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Empire to almost immediately declare a truce in order to stop them.
    • Skallz is this to the Koopalings as he had a hand in killing their mother. As soon as they realize this, they put aside the fact they have been trying to kill each other and go after him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Luigi, Cobal, and the Toads easily defeat Boom Boom’s garrison in Peach’s Castle in their first battle.
    • Ludwig’s Neo Empire crushes the sectors of Iggy, Lemmy, and Morton.
    • Strike quickly apprehends Cobal when he catches him calling Luigi.
    • Skallz Fortiscule isn’t even hit once when fighting the Stoneshell Prison escapees, and they only barely escape from him.
    • Larry easily defeats Cobal and company in their battle, even calling the fight boring.
  • Death Is Cheap: Due to Rosalina becoming one with the stars, she will be reincarnated and raised by the Lumas until she is old enough.
  • Death Seeker: 20 years after Peach disappeared, Bowser has stopped caring what happens to his empire and is willing to let it collapse and himself die, with his only concern being finding Peach by any means necessary.
  • Defiant to the End: Bobbery practically dares Skallz to kill him saying that he's lived a good life, everyone else has escaped from Stoneshell Prison and Scarlette is waiting for him.
  • De-power: Antonio plans to de-power everyone and everything extraordinary in the Mushroom Kingdom to create a balanced world.
  • Downer Beginning: The story starts with Mario losing the final battle and dying, and picks up 20 years after Bowser takes over.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After 20 years of oppression and many chapters full of battles that could affect the entire galaxy, by the end of things peace reigns and relations in the Mushroom World are stronger than ever.
  • Enemy Mine: Luigi allies with unsavory characters like Wario, Waluigi, and King K. Rool in his quest to bring the Empire down.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: This is how the Thousand Year Door partners view Koops siding with the Neo Empire until they learn about the Slave Seal.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Rosalina once loved the world, but is now complicit in Antonio's plan to reshape it.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Larry sends Koops out to deal with Mario's old partners.
  • Freudian Excuse: Antonio's plans of a world without powers stem from his highly destructive battles with Morton, which ravaged the kingdom and killed his wife.
  • Geas: Koops is kept in line via a Slave Seal rune that will kill him and his entire family if he disobeys. When Vivian burns it off, he's freed.
  • The Ghost: Pauline is mentioned a few times throughout the story, but never appears.
  • Gilded Cage: Princess Daisy is treated relatively well and even acts as an advisor to Morton at times, but she's still a prisoner and would rather see the Empire fall.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: As the oldest Koopaling, Ludwig was very jealous when Bowser Jr. was named heir to the throne instead of him.
  • Grey-and-Gray Morality: The Koopa Empire has many shades to it, with some being bloodthirsty and others merely committed to the job, while others want to restore the Koopa Troop to its former glory and want to see the Empire fall. Similarly, the resistance has many shades of grey, with some hating all Koopas, others wanting to bring peace by any means necessary, and others, like Luigi, wanting to restore hope and bring the Empire down with minimal lives lost.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Yoshi slowly became as bad as, if not worse, than the Koopas he fought over time.
  • He's Back!: Chapter 57 has Bowser, reeling from how weak he's become in his old age, drinking Kammy's Dark Star potion, which instantly restores his vitality and empowers him to be even stronger than in his prime.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Admiral Bobbery sacrifices himself to ensure the escape from Stoneshell Prison is successful, Bombette sacrifices herself in the final fight, and, in the end, Bowser sacrifices himself to save the Mushroom World and the galaxy. K. Rool also dies taking a hit for Cobal.
  • Heroic Second Wind: During his battle with Roy, Luigi is beaten down, but remembers all the people he’s fighting for and defeats Roy with Thunderhand.
  • Hope Bringer: Luigi's rebellious exploits give hope to the citizens for the first time in a long time.
  • Humongous Mecha: The Neo Koopa War Armors, designed by Ludwig himself with titanium hulls and magical reactors. They are equipped with massive laser cannons that are powerful enough to destroy a fleet of ships that would have taken days for a conventional army within 30 minutes.
  • Hypocrite: Antonio laments the destructive powers of the Star Children and wants to bring about a world of balance, ignoring that he and his organization are incredibly powerful themselves.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight:
    • Mario is confident he can sway Rosalina from her course and remind her how much she loved the world with the power of the Dreamstone and his hopes for a happy ending. While she's tempted, it doesn't work.
    • Earlier in the story, Luigi pulls one of these on a Brainwashed and Crazy Mario. It works.
  • I've Come Too Far: By chapter 43, the only reason Yoshi sticks with Fire Flower is because he feels he's come too far to stop.
  • Internal Reveal: Chapter 42 has Kammy learn who was behind Lavaria's death and vowing to bring the news to Bowser at once. Chapter 55 has a majority of the cast learn the news.
  • Just Toying with Them: Antonio tends to not take any opponent seriously given how powerful he is, so when he does take them seriously it's bad news.
  • La Résistance: The Fire Flower resistance, led by Yoshi, has been resisting Bowser since he took the world. Luigi later leads his own branch of the resistance.
  • Last of His Kind: Prince Peasley is one of the last Beanish left after the Beanbean Kingdom's demise.
  • Legacy Character: Mario and Bowser are this to Antonio, Mario's father, and Emperor Morton, Bowser's father. Cobal also turns out to be a descendant of the Yoshi partner from The Thousand Year Door, although his father turns out to still be alive.
  • Loophole Abuse: Chapter 59 has the various factions attempting to make wishes that get around the wish-granting restrictions, such as wishing for more ships or power-ups.
  • The Lost Lenore: Bowser's queen, Lavaria, was murdered after Bowser Jr. was born, and her death caused Bowser to renew his focus on his childhood crush Peach.
  • Mad Scientist: Ludwig spends a lot of his time building powerful war robots and other machines with repurposed technology, then sets them on his siblings.
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: After a long, exhausting battle between Mario and Bowser in chapter 58, the two go and sit down on a bench, reminiscing about their lives and past battles.
  • Mind over Matter: Skallz Fortiscule’s knowledge of Sun’s Amber Eyes magic grants him powerful telekinesis, even enough to lift entire towers.
  • Missing Mom: The Koopalings' mother, Queen Lavaria, died in their childhood, with only Ludwig having clear memories of her.
  • More than Mind Control: Rosalina has been so heavily manipulated by Antonio that she is willing to kill everyone on her own free will. Polari even directly states that Antonio poisoned her mind.
  • Morton's Fork: Koops is stuck in one of these when Larry sends him out to defeat Mario's other partners. Either he fights and most likely kills his old friends, or he doesn't fight and then the slave seal kills him and his family. He thankfully ends up getting a third option: Vivian burns the slave seal off and frees him, letting him join the resistance.
  • Mythology Gag: King K. Rool is left with only Krusha and Klump as his minions, much like the Donkey Kong Country cartoon where they were his primary minions.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization: The Seven Stars lead the criminal underworld and have designs on taking over the Koopa Empire, with some having ties as far back as the First Koopa War.
  • Not Quite Dead: Mario was kept alive through the Seven Stars' magic and technology, suspended in amber crystal until he's ready to be awakened.
  • Nuke 'em: After Luigi defeats Roy, Fire Flower drops a Nuclear Bob-Omb on Neon City.
  • One-Man Army: Skallz Fortiscule fought in the first Koopa War and takes on all of the prison escapees himself, taking a sacrifice and a lot of luck to escape from him. Antonio is even stronger, and his battles with Morton reshaped the landscapes of both kingdoms.
  • Patchwork Fic: Every Mario game and series is treated as canon to the story, and several aspects of other media, like the DiC cartoons, are referenced as well.
  • Precursors: The deceased Antonio, his brother Giovanni, and Emperor Morton's powers are said to far surpass Mario, Luigi, and Bowser's, and the First Koopa War sowed the seeds of Mario and Bowser's conflict. Subverted with Antonio, who's still alive and very active in reshaping the world.
  • Power Creep: The story at first seems to address the hopelessness of one man taking on an empire, and most of the combat is done by large armies of ships and common troops, with no one person massively altering the landscape of the battle. Luigi himself was a formidable Hope Bringer but out of practice and not powerful enough to invade major bases on his own, and the very powerful Koopa Royalty rarely engaged in combat themselves. By the end, Luigi is practically invincible to common soldiers, the Koopa Royalty are out on the battefield, and battles are pretty much decided by around 20 One-Man Armies who tear apart tanks and airships like tissue paper. To say nothing of the planet-shattering cosmic struggle against Rosalina in the climax.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Skallz Fortiscule has the rank of Purple Star in the Seven Stars, wears a fedora with a purple stripe, and is the second-most powerful being in the world.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: The later parts of the story have multiple characters from past adventures joining the resistance to take down Bowser, Ludwig, and the Seven Stars.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking:
    • The resistance has Luigi, who can wreck tanks with one punch and even destroy Imperial buildings, as its leader. Other powerful heroes make up the inner circle like Mario’s old partners.
    • The Koopa Empire is led by Emperor Bowser and the Koopa High Command, along with Bowser Jr and three of the Koopalings. While Bowser is weaker than before, he is still formidable, and Bowser Jr can fight Luigi evenly. The High Command is also quite powerful, consisting of Bowser’s strongest warriors.
    • The Neo Empire is headed by Ludwig, Roy, and Larry. Larry can easily take on multiple heroes at the same time and Roy almost beat Luigi, while Ludwig easily defeated Morton Jr.
    • Seven Stars is led by a Board of Directors consisting of some powerful fighters like Sthnadlash, the Silver Star, who can take on Cobal’s entire group. Above him is Skallz Fortiscule, the Purple Star who easily overpowered all the escapees of Stoneshell Prison singlehandedly. Finally their leader, the Grand Star Antonio, is the most powerful fighter in the world.
  • Rousing Speech: Chapter 56 has each of the respective sides of the war, minus Ludwig, give one to their assembled armies as they begin to converge on the final battlefield.
  • Sibling Rivalry: The more ambitious Koopalings have designs on taking their siblings' sectors, and a major part of the plot kicks off when Roy allies with Larry and Ludwig to attack Morton, Bowser Jr., Iggy, and Lemmy, followed by Ludwig allying with Wendy to make it a 4 on 4 battle.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Several of the sector leaders have egos too big for their names, like Captain Boom Boom and General Flame; the former thinks Mario beat him only by luck and the latter craves fame and acts like a rock star.
  • So Proud of You: Gonzales tells Cobal this at the war's end.
  • The Starscream: Ludwig is bent on taking over the Empire and renaming it his Neo Koopa Empire.
  • Stopped Caring: At the story's outset Luigi is too broken to do much, but is galvanized into helping after saving Cobal. Bowser has this attitude after so many years with Peach missing.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Defied with the Koopa Empire using a wish to ensure protection against wish magic, ensuring they can't be undone by powerful wish-granting artifacts. The Neo Empire did something similar with the Sundream Stone.
  • Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: Rosalina's last-ditch attack has her attempt to destroy the galaxy, which would wipe out everyone in it, including herself.
  • Super-Speed: Antonio was described by Kooperly as moving like a flash of light. He shows this by moving fast enough to hold a knife to Skallz’s throat in the blink of an eye.
  • Tailor-Made Prison: After their defeats, Antonio and Giovanni are incarcerated with enough magic runes and seals to keep them imprisoned.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Mario met his end by getting hit with about 50 Bullet Bills at once.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Several of the heroes have this reaction when they realize just what Starfall is...and what it will entail for them.
  • Together in Death:
    • Bowser meets Lavaria after expending himself stopping Rosalina, and the two are happy together.
    • Following his Heroic Sacrifice, Bobbery joined Scarlette in the afterlife.
  • Took a Level in Cynic:
    • After Mario's death, Yoshi became jaded at his failures and vowed to do whatever it took to bring down Bowser, including dropping Nuclear Bob-Ombs.
    • Prince Peasley didn't take becoming the Last of His Kind very well, becoming so jaded he abandoned the very concept of heroes... before Cobal changed his mind.
    • Rosalina once loved the world, but became jaded at the endless strife and decided to depower everything thanks to Antonio's manipulations.
  • Trojan Prisoner: To get into Stoneshell Prison, Strike 'captures' K. Rool and company.
  • Un-person: No records of Queen Lavaria are found in the Koopa Empire, and she was stricken from history books and portraits, with speaking her name becoming a crime.
  • Villain World: Luigi has a distinctly uphill battle to fight after 20 years of Bowser's reign.
  • Visionary Villain:
    • Ludwig laments his siblings' creative droughts and vows to expand the Koopa Empire into space.
    • Antonio has grand visions of a world of balance without super-powered beings shaping destinies.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Antonio and Morton were friends in their youth, until the First Koopa War made them enemies.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 38 has a double-whammy. Mario is being kept alive by Seven Stars, and his father Antonio is the Grand Star with plans to de-power everyone powerful in the world, especially the Star Children.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The final chapter is devoted to everyone's lives ten years after the war, with peace returning to the Mushroom World as a whole and everyone being on better terms than before. Specifics include:
    • Mario and Peach rule the Mushroom Kingdom and have a daughter named Bianca.
    • Luigi and Daisy rule Sarasaland and have a son named Lorenzo.
    • Prince Peasley is working to restore the Beanbean Kingdom and has been crowned king.
    • Wario and Waluigi have retired from evil to enjoy their fortune in peace. Wario is planning to start a video game company, while Waluigi has devoted his life to tennis.
    • Yoshi has been working to find the last remains of the Seven Stars. He has also been working to make up for what he did to Neon City.
    • Cobal has joined the new Mushroom Kingdom army, which is led by Captain Toad and Toadette.
    • Gonzales has retired from Glitz Pit fighting to become a trainer for up and coming fighters.
    • Goombella and Flurrie both work for the University of Goom, with the former being a being a professor of archaeology while the latter teaches an elite acting course.
    • Vivian returned to her old life in Twilight Town.
    • Koops moved to the Koopa Kingdom to become Grand General in order to root out corruption in the kingdom, along with Strike and Blueshell.
    • Bowser Jr took over the Koopa Kingdom and now has a son.
    • Morton started a construction company.
    • Lemmy started a film studio, mainly focusing on comedies.
    • Iggy is helping Jr run the kingdom.
    • Wendy's enjoying a life in high society.
    • Larry is in charge of one of the most powerful corporations in the Koopa Kingdom.
    • Roy is in prison, but is keeping things in order there.
    • Ludwig is under house arrest, where he now composes symphonies and has discovered some scientific breakthroughs
  • Whole Episode Flashback: A majority of chapter 55 is a flashback detailing Lavaria's death.
  • World of Silence: Antonio's vision of the world post-Starfall is where everyone leads a pointless, peaceful existence with no conflict at all.
  • World's Strongest Man: Mario’s father Antonio and Bowser’s father Morton were the most powerful fighters the world had ever known, destroying mountains and creating canyons in their battles.
  • Wretched Hive: Roy's Neon City is the heart of the Empire's vice, with casinos, bars, and other nightlife attractions running 24/7. Wario runs a similar cabal underground, built on money and greed.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: The wish-granting powers of the Beanstar and Bowser's subjugated Sticker Comet collided, leveling the Beanbean Kingdom beyond repair.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In Chapter 53 Peach gives such a speech to Yoshi and offers him a chance to atone for his crimes and become the hero he once was.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Rosalina believes the future can't be changed and tries to get Cobal to give up while he can.
