Dies Differently In Adaptation / Sailor Moon

Go To

Nobody seems to die in this franchise the same way twice or even killed by the same person. Note that since this is a magical girl show, most characters are killed by an energy blast/attack unless otherwise noted.

From manga to 90s anime

  • Both Serenity and Endymion are killed by Metalia in the anime. In the manga, Endymion was killed by Beryl impaling him with a sword, protecting Serenity by taking a blow meant for her. Serenity committed suicide in despair.
  • The entire Dark Kingdom was hit by this in the anime.
    • Admittedly Jadeite's debatable, being frozen/encased in ice/crystal by Beryl, but the story otherwise continues on as if he really had died, so it's probably easier to just say he did. In the manga, he was obviously and fairly graphically killed onscreen by Sailor Mars using a fire attack in her debut chapter.
    • Nephrite was killed by three of Zoisite's youma underlings who used various plant-associated attacks and thus by Zoisite indirectly. In the manga, he's killed by Sailor Jupiter using a lightning attack in her debut chapter.
    • Zoisite was killed by Beryl blasting him. In the manga, he was literally ripped to shreds by Sailor Venus' attack in her debut chapter.note
    • Kunzite probably came the closest to dying the same way, but even then Toei had to fudge it so the heroines only killed him indirectly at best. In the manga, he was killed by a combined attack from Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus. In the anime, the Inners powered up Sailor Moon who deflected his purple boomerang back at him.
    • In the manga, Beryl was killed by Venus stabbing her in the stomach with a sword and blood visibly coming from the wound and Metalia was killed by Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask in Battle Couple-style. Since Metalia was much less of a character in the anime, the writers decided to save themselves some time and have her fuse with Beryl to form Super Beryl who was killed by Usagi in the form of Princess Serenity with some help from the Inners' ghosts.
  • The Black Moon Clan wasn't hit quite as hard.
    • Rubeus was killed by his exploding ship in the anime (and died a lot sooner than he did in the manga). Wiseman killed him in the manga.
    • Esmeraude's killed by, of all people, Tuxedo Mask in the manga, using Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber. In the anime, after Sailor Moon destroys her dragon form, she falls into the void.
    • Saphir's killed by Wiseman in the anime. In the manga, he was killed by his own brother, Diamond.
    • Due to the anime softening Diamond's character, he's Impaled with Extreme Prejudice by Wiseman protecting Sailor Moon from a hit. In the manga, he was killed by Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask using The Power of Love, making for an Ironic Death as he thought love was an object you could take by force.
  • Both of Kaolinite's deaths count. The first time Sailor Uranus used World Shaking to turn her crystal beam against her, encasing her in crystal and appeared to fall off of Tokyo Tower to her death. The second time she was killed by Mistress 9 using a lightning attack to send her back into an electric force field. In the manga, she was killed by Super Sailor Moon.
  • All of the Witches 5. They’re all killed the second time by Neptune after their resurrection, but their first deaths are dealt by different Scouts in the manga:
    • Eudial drove her car off a cliff because Mimete had cut her brakes and filled her car with snails. In the manga, she was first killed by Sailor Moon and then, after Kaolinite resurrected her, by Sailor Neptune.
    • Mimete technically suffered a Fate Worse than Death in the anime, but the way she's defeated is very different (and she never bothers the heroines again). She turned herself into Pure Energy only to have Tellu literally pull the plug on her, trapping her forever in cyberspace. In the manga, she was killed the first time by Sailor Uranus.
    • Tellu's own plants turned on her and killed her in the anime. In the manga, she was killed the first time by Sailor Pluto.
    • Viluy, much like Tellu above, was killed by her own nano-machines turning on her. In the manga, she was killed the first time by Sailor Uranus.
    • Cyprine and Ptilol killed each other in the anime when they were tricked into firing their attacks at the other. In the manga, they were first killed by Super Sailor Moon.
  • Sailor Pluto is an odd case. She dies the same way - death by stopping time, a major taboo. It's when that's different; in the manga and Crystal, it's to stop Diamond from touching the present and future Silver Crystals together, but in the original anime, it's to save Neptune and Uranus from dying in a helicopter explosion.
  • Iron Mouse and Aluminum Siren were killed by Galaxia in the anime when she removed their bracelets, the only thing keeping them alive. In the manga, Mouse was killed by Sailor Star Healer and Siren by Sailor Star Maker and Healer.
  • Lead Crow was killed by being sucked into her own black hole after Tin Nyanko caused her to drop the container with it inside, unleashing it right in front of her. In the manga, she was killed by Eternal Sailor Moon.
  • Kakyuu was killed by Sailor Chi ramming her staff through her chest in the manga, but since she was Adapted Out of the anime, Kakyuu was instead anticlimactically killed by Galaxia.
  • Sailors Mercury and Jupiter are killed by Aluminum Siren in the final arc of the manga. Since Siren was a completely different character in the anime, they were instead killed by Sailor Galaxia. In this case, the manner of death stayed the same: their Sailor Crystals/Star Seeds were removed.
  • Much the same thing happened to Sailors Pluto and Saturn; they were killed by having their crystals/seeds removed, but their killer varied by medium. In the manga, it was Galaxia, but in the anime it was Uranus and Neptune.

From manga to Crystal

  • All of the Shitennou were killed by Metalia after having outlived their usefulness, twice breaking through their brainwashing.
  • Beryl was killed when Sailor Moon destroyed her necklace, disintegrating into dust. Both this change and the one above were likely to have been caused by limitations on what can be shown in anime getting even stricter since the first anime aired, meaning there was little to no chance of the manga's Nightmare Fuel and blood getting into Sailor Moon Crystal.
  • Prince Diamond is killed by Wiseman like he was in the first anime, except it was at first set up to look like Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask would kill him like in the manga. Thus he doesn't die trying to protect Sailor Moon from Wiseman and no attempt is made to make him more sympathetic or say he "really" loved, not lusted, over Neo Queen Serenity.

From manga to live-action

  • All of the Shitennou die differently than in the manga. Jadeite turns into crystal, but is revived by Beryl as she lampshades the stupidity of offing him despite his failure. Nephrite is killed by Beryl to show Mamoru she was serious about killing the Shitennou if he didn't join the Dark Kingdom. He later returns as the human Nefurin. Zoicite is killed taking a fatal blow for Sailor Moon, while Kunzite is accidentally killed by Jadeite. Jadeite finally meets his end by remaining with Beryl as the Dark Kingdom collapsed. Finally, Nephrite dies for good after Princess Sailor Moon destroys the world.
