Welcome, campers. Welcome to Eden.

DR: Disaster Duel is a closed, Discord-based Danganronpa fangame. You wake up in a bed that is not your own, in a cabin you have never seen before. Along with a group of fellow Super High School Levels, will you be able to survive this new life?

Disaster Duel demonstrates these examples of tropes:

  • Body of the Week: Every chapter results in at least one death that the remaining students have to investigate.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies
  • Clear My Name/Clear Their Name: Happens whenever somebody is accused of the crime and fights the charges, or when their friends do their best to help them. Of course, the question of whether or not they're actually guilty is very real....
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The executions, which are tailor-made for each culprit. Usually, they either mock their Super High School Level talent or exploit their deepest fears, ensuring their punishment is as terrifying as possible. Occasionally, a murder victim also dies in a particularly horrible manner.
  • Developing Doomed Characters: That's some to most of the characters. Good luck figuring out which ones they are before they die. They include:
    • Airi Brekke, SHSL Winter Sports Coach, Chapter 1 Victim
    • Tochi Karouyasu, SHSL Teamaker, Chapter 1 Killer
    • Michiko Tsuchiya, SHSL Inheritrix, Chapter 1 Victim
    • Taro Yamashida, SHSL Knitter, Chapter 1 Killer
  • Dysfunction Junction: Each student has their own quirks, to put it lightly. Sometimes that helps them get along swimmingly, but most of the time, it puts a bit of a rift between them.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: But who knows how much the students will have to sacrifice to achieve it?
  • Everyone Is a Suspect: The objective of each trial is to find out who is the most suspicious. Extends to before each individual murder, when the students must attempt to figure out who the possible complicit person might be.
  • Evidence Scavenger Hunt: After every murder, the surviving students are forced to investigate the crime before the class trial, hopefully figuring out which one of them did the deed.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Often, relationships (both platonic and possibly romantic) are formed due to the stress everyone is put under and the bonds created thusly.
  • Kangaroo Court: None of these kids are suited for this.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Considering its premise and the fact that it's a roleplay, the characters are not above poking fun at the supposed absurdity of their circumstances.
  • Let Them Die Happy: In chapter 1, before Tochi was executed, several of his teammates promised him that there would be no more killing. Of course, as muns we all know that this isn't going to be the case.... But hey, at least he died happy.
  • Message in a Bottle: Before the wall separating the two sides of the lake comes down, Pink and Green Teams use these to communicate with each other.
  • Mystery of the Week: There's a new murder every two-ish weeks in real life.
  • Red Herring: Par for the course in a murder mystery. There's usually one or two big ones every case.
  • Shear Menace: The murder weapon used to kill Airi Brekke in chapter 1.
  • Shout-Out: May contain references to popular culture, internet phenomena and call-backs to previous games the muns and their muses have been in.
  • Teen Genius: All the students to some extent. They were initially accepted into Hope's Peak for being the best in their age bracket at what they do.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: Specifically, every couple of weeks, someone will be murdered.
  • Translation Convention: All characters are presumed to be speaking Japanese unless otherwise noted, even though the game is written in English.

Ji-min Koo is just a regular goth looking guy, sans the typical moody demeanor you’d associate with someone who only wears dark, desaturate colors. He’s literally just a regular guy, apparently, a proclaimed Luckster despite very rarely ever having any luck… was the drawing of his name rigged? That wouldn’t be unlikely, with how average this good ol' friendly guy seems.

  • Addled Addict: Ji-min is a drug addict of nearly every kind imaginable, it seems. At one point he tries to hide an entire marijuana plant under his sweater.
  • Chaotic Stupid: While not exactly unintelligent (REALLY?!), he certainly lacks common sense and this results in many shenanigans.
  • Delinquents: A cliche rowdy boy.
  • Goth: Just look at him.
    • Perky Goth: He's a regular, friendly guy, despite the really dark clothes that he wears.
  • Unlucky Everydude: Claims that the only lucky thing that's ever happened to him was his name getting drawn in that Hope's Peak lottery.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5_coyyvbm.png

Shiki Nanaki is Japanese writer, researcher, and blogger. While her actual writings aren’t as well known, her blog definitely is. Her blog, Shiki’s-Afterlife-Research, has an overwhelming amount of followers due to her particular sense of humor while tackling the serious subjects of the afterlife. She has done extensive research and information gathering on different beliefs, legends, and myths, surrounding the afterlife. While her blog contains bits and pieces of her research, she has written two books with more information and still is working on more. For as much as she knows on this vast subject at such a young age, and how many people actually follow her despite the subject of her work, she most definitely deserves her title.

  • "Not So Different" Remark: Shiki and Mimi's relationship follows this trope. At first the two of them bump heads to such an extent they might as well be sworn enemies, but it isn't too long before Sayuri steps in and they realize that they both have a lot more in common than they thought at first. They seem to be coming an Odd Friendship pair.
  • Survivor Guilt: A lot of death has always seemed to happen around Shiki, to the point that people in her hometown spread a rumor that she was cursed. In one particular instance, she was the only survivor of a fire that destroyed an entire shrine.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4_2h0lwcu.png

Sayuri Abe, now holding the title of SHSL Police Officer, was accepted into her local police force when she was 15. One of the well known police officers, Hiraku Sasaki, brought her in, and she had insisted on joining, and after convincing her superiors to allow her to shadow the other police officers, they conceded and allowed her to become a partial officer. Though she was initially not allowed to go on pursuit missions in order to capture wrongdoers because of her age, she proved her worth to her superiors by catching many thieves, purse snatchers, and catching and stopping a small scale drug dealer. When she hit 17, the police department decided to have her work on some more upscale cases. After stopping an upscale bank robbery without any bloodshed, and finding a kidnapped boy who’d been missing for more than a month, she, once again, proved to be an invaluable member of the team. Sayuri Abe now works alongside her older peers as if they were but fellow coworkers, and has been a tremendous addition to the local police force.

  • Heroic BSoD: Sayuri experiences one of these after Airi is found dead and Tochi is executed in chapter 1.

Airi Brekke

SHSL Winter Sports Coach

A former Olympic hopeful, Airi Brekke is a half-Norwegian half-Japanese skier turned coach. She’s most famous for her work with figure skaters, but has helped snowboarders, skiers, bobsleighers, speed fliers, and more with their competitions and has a dozen gold medals accredited to her players under her belt over three years. She used to be a professional in extreme winter sports, but quit that years ago for the more traditional winter activities.

Tochi is wonderful at creating brews from his stash of excellent herbs, flowers, and fruits that he has amassed from gifts and purchases during visits to other countries. His brews can range from effects to mood, to curing some sicknesses. He has been hired by important figureheads and world leaders before to create brews for meetings and family members. He enjoys appearing at local farmers markets or artisan gatherings to share and sell blends he has made, and this eventually happened to coincide with a talent agent from HPA visiting one of the places he was.

Hisoka Kayo

SHSL Bitcoin Miner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/12_gtg2cci.png

Hisoka Kayo jumped on the bitcoin train when it first came out and has been riding it ever since. They’ve amassed a fortune in the digital coin, using it to buy their own apartment and turn their former slum into a paradise. They live on their own and have barely ever been seen outside of their apartment. It’s said they own more than a thousand bitcoin mining machines, although how they fit them all into their one-bedroom home is still unknown.

  • An Arm And Aleg: During the first "game" the two teams played against each other, Hisoka had one of their legs chopped off due to them answering a trivia question incorrectly. This leads to them receiving an Artificial Limb from the kind mascots. How generous.
  • Five Stages of Grief: After Tochi Karouyasu is executed in the chapter 1 trial, Hisoka seems to be stuck in the first stage, "denial", for some time. Also crosses into Heroic BSoD.
    • They even go so far as to tell the Pink Team members when they meet that the Green Team didn't even have a trial. They just really don't want to think about it, it seems....
  • Techno Wizard: Hisoka's mined so many bitcoins they've been able to make a living off of it. They're obviously great at using a computer.

Naomi Luzviminda

SHSL Call Center Agent

Charismatic and persuasive, it’s hard to say no when you get a call from Naomi Luzviminda. No matter how nervous or anxious you can be on the phone, you’ll slowly find yourself at ease when you hear her pleasant and welcoming voice. Thanks to this freelance call center agent, Naomi is able to gather customers for even the least popular of companies, increasing their business and saving them from debt.

Ming Zhu Mao

SHSL Modern Fashion Designer

Nonbinary | They/Them

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ming_9.pnghttps://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ming_zhu_report_card.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17_d8cbz3b.png

Sneaking into the fashion industry, Ming Zhu Mao burst into the scene out of nowhere. Their name was nothing, and then it was everywhere; models were strutting their designs down the runway, and magazine spreads displayed their work in many photoshoots. Elaborate, yet with a certain finesse, no would could deny that Ming Zhu was paving a new road in modern fashion with their new view.

  • Angst? What Angst?: Literally, almost nothing that happens seems to bother them. Even murder and death.
  • Blithe Spirit: Probably would like to think of themself as this, but it can't be denied that they definitely were this to the fashion industry, and the company that discovered their talents.
  • First-Name Basis: They refer to everyone by their given names, no matter what, and largely prefers to be referred to as Ming Zhu in turn. It leads to them have multiple conversations in a row with the students on the other side, who are apparently significantly more polite than those on Green and referred to them as "Mao" or "Mao-san", and having to request they refrain from doing so since they are not extending the same to them.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Upon first meeting Kin, Ming Zhu rushes up to them, so close they may as well be hugging. This is within perhaps 10 minutes of exchanging names.
  • Perpetual Smiler: They're always smiling, to the point that it's easier to say when they's stopped doing so, rather than say every time they do it. Even in grim situations like trials...
  • Signature Laugh: Fufu!
  • Simple, yet Opulent: While they are capable of and have designed things that are complicated and really blinged out, their claim to fame is their ability to make clothes that are both elaborate yet not overbearing.
  • Team Mom: To their adopted child, Mimi.

Mimi

SHSL Biomedical Engineer

Nonbinary | They/Them

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimi_9.pnghttps://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mimi_report_card.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/16_83ojcdx.png

The nickname “Mimi” alone doesn’t ring a bell, but ask anyone familiar with Hope’s Peak Academy’s student body about the SHSL Biomedical Engineer and they’ll know the story of a stupidly rich child who rose to the top of their field from pure intellect. This person is widely considered the brightest rising star in both medicine and engineering! Anyone who’s met Mimi in person will tell you they’re in turns eccentric, quirky, and sweet - and they absolutely refuse to be called anything besides their childhood nickname.

  • Berserk Button: Don't refer to Mimi as being younger than they are. You'll hardly hear the end of it if you do.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: It seems like the absolute worst insult that Mimi could ever think to use against someone is along the lines of, "You're just a big meanie!", and variations thereof. It's so bad that Kin feels obligated to attempt to coach them in insulting people.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Mimi might look, dress, and act like a bratty 10-year-old (as Airi so eloquently pointed out to them during chapter 1), but as with any other HPA student, they're frankly a genius at what they do.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Does anyone know what Mimi is talking about half the time? Because I sure don't.
  • Constantly Curious: Mimi asks way too many questions, and a lot of the ''worst'' ones for the situation, somehow.
  • The Cutie: Small and tiny and pink and stupid, yet some people seem to find them endearing. Seems to me, though, like they might be overdoing it...
  • Drama Queen: They've already demonstrated to the Green Team folks that they really like to play things up that happen to them.
  • Dumb Blonde: Subverted, as Mimi is actually kind of a genius. A Ditzy Genius, one might say.
  • Friendless Background: It's revealed after their conflict with Shiki that Mimi actually didn't have a lot of friends growing up, and doesn't seem to have many to this day. Mimi claims that this is because they're smart, and people were jealous of them. It very well have more to do with their attitude, though.
  • Geek Physiques: Mimi's the scrawny, fragile edition of this.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Mimi wears their blonde hair in twin pigtails.
  • Keet: Loud, obnoxious, hyperactive, and bubbly, Mimi is the encyclopedia photo entry for "Keet".
  • Nerd Glasses: They wear huge, wire-rimmed, nerdy glasses. Also an example of Smart People Wear Glasses.
  • The Nicknamer: Mimi calls everyone by a shortened variant of their name and -chan.
    • The one exception to this rule is Kin, whose nickname from Mimi is "Grape-chan", referencing Kin's purple hair.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: For whatever reason, Mimi only likes to be called... "Mimi". Just "Mimi", with no sign of a surname in sight. That's not even a real name, is it? Hmm....
  • Signature Laugh: Nyeeheehee~!
  • Sweet Tooth: They ate nothing but chocolate bars for the entirety of the prologue and chapter 1; it wasn't until Ming Zhu offered to cook them food that Mimi ate anything of real substance. The trend continues, as Mimi pretty much only eats chocolate unless someone else offers to make them food.
