FIRST, SURVIVE. THEN FIND THE TRUTH.

DANGANRONPA: DELUSIUM is a closed Discord-based Danganronpa roleplay group taking place in the universe of the YA book series The Illuminae Files.

DANGANRONPA: DELUSIUM demonstrates these examples of tropes:

  • Amateur Sleuth: Downplayed in certain cases, played straight for the most part.
  • Anyone Can Die: Even being a roleplay, any of the characters can be a victim or culprit.
  • Black-and-Grey Morality: Arguably, the whole thing. In order to escape, you have to kill someone. If you vote for the culprit during the trial, you have a hand in their death. If you don't vote for the culprit, you're adding to the chances of someone innocent being killed. No one will escape this game without some guilt on their shoulders.
  • Body of the Week: Every chapter results in at least one death that the remaining students have to investigate.
  • Clear My Name / Clear Their Name: Happens whenever somebody is accused of the crime and fights the charges, or when their friends do their best to help them. Of course, the question of whether or not they're actually guilty is very real...
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The executions, which are tailor-made for each culprit. Usually, they either mock their Ultimate talent or exploit their deepest fears, ensuring their punishment is as terrifying as possible. Occasionally, a murder victim also dies in a particularly horrible manner.
  • Everyone Is a Suspect: The objective of each trial is to find out who is the most suspicious.
  • Evidence Scavenger Hunt: Once a body is discovered, the surviving students, culprit included, are expected to investigate for evidence to prepare for the class trial where they will attempt to find the person behind the crime.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Often, relationships (both platonic and possibly romantic) are formed due to the stress everyone is put under and the bonds created thusly.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Considering its premise and the fact that it's a roleplay, the characters are not above poking fun at the supposed absurdity of their circumstances.
  • Mystery of the Week: There's a new murder about every two weeks.
  • Public Execution: If a killer is caught, they are dragged away to a cruel execution that usually causes them a lot of emotional and physical suffering before they are finally killed.
  • Red Herring: Par for the course in a murder mystery. There's usually one or two big ones every case.
  • Sadistic Choice: Kill one of your classmates, or spend the rest of your life in captivity — and when it comes down to the trial, fess up and receive a gruesome punishment, or escape with the blood of everyone else on your hands.
  • Shout-Out: May contain references to popular culture, internet phenomena and call-backs to previous games the muns and their muses have been in.
  • Teen Genius: All the students to some extent. They were initially accepted into Future Hope Academy for being the best in their age bracket at what they do.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: Specifically, every couple of weeks, someone will be murdered.
  • Win Your Freedom: Students are informed that escape is possible; they just have to get away with murder.

Characters

Leveret Byrne

Ultimate Genetic Engineer

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_a_leveret_byrne.png

Leveret Byrne, Genetic Engineer. Born and raised on Willarie III. Well-known for his ability to create and nurture a very wide range of animals, including designer kinds never before seen on any planet. He’s very popular with upper-scale clientele, as long as they can speak to his parents about the job. He’s not great with people.

Chapter 2 Victim

  • Adorkable: He's helplessly nerdy and socially awkward; still, Lev is lovable nonetheless, or perhaps because of these traits.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: It's not unfair to say that Lev is, at times, rather... spacey.
  • Kill the Cutie: Lev is murdered in Chapter 2, proving that being naive and lovable just won't save you from dying in this game.

Apollo Cadeci

Ultimate Prosthetist

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_r_apollo_cadeci.png

The Cadeci family are a family twelve strong of traveling doctors by trade, visiting planets wherever there are patients who can afford to commission their services in their private spaceship. Their price varies depending on the needs of the patients and their socioeconomic position—as stories go, those who can afford to pay more and those who can’t usually get cut a little slack. The newest addition to their working staff is Apollo, who at the young age of eighteen specializes in prosthetics of all sorts. Stories around the web paint him as more than a little eccentric; there are a few stories going around of those who’ve received prosthetics from him getting a little surprise extra features in their new body parts, and there are a few dubious stories that he’ll take old Terran music rather than money for payment if you’re willing to part with it. Regardless of what the rumor mill tells, however, the quality of his prosthetics is undisputed, and to hear a few newspapers tell it a few representatives of Ares VI have even contacted the Cadecis to try and commission Apollo for military application, and universities on Willarie III and Kerenza IV have invited him to study. If this is true, however, he’s obviously turned them down, as upon recruitment to Future Hope he still traveled with his family.

Kujira Cannon

Ultimate Locksmith

Genderfluid | Any Pronouns

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_e_kujira_cannon.png

Kujira Cannon arose from the crowds of scientists in Willarie III to stand out for their skills in modern security and unique approach to the old idea of steam-powered technology. Their lock installations look like something out of a steampunk novel, much like they themself with their signature Neo-Steampunk fashion sense and famous representation of the subculture itself, but they take advantage of the climate and ample water on the planet to become indestructible and uncrackable by anyone. The Cannon name is now highly envied and respected across the planet, but many wonder how their inventions will be any use on planets beyond this one thanks to the specific design.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Kujira loses their entire right arm during the Chapter 2 escape room event.
  • Brutal Honesty: Kujira seems entirely oblivious to the fact that a lot of things they say are... well, insensitive, to say the least. And when it's pointed out, they don't even seem to care.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Subverted. Even though Kujira works with their hands, losing an arm doesn't seem to be the end of the line for them; with Apollo's help, they get a new arm back quicker than anything, and they seem to be rearing to get back to work any minute.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Their Ultimate Talent might be a little overly specific, but Kujira claims to be a supergenius and the evidence seems to back them up, to a good extent at least. Given all of the gadget-y upgrades they've made to their apparel and the affinity for tinkering with tech, they fit this trope like a glove, it would seem.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: It's not completely clear whether or not Kujira is necessarily "evil", but their eyes are red.

"Ying Canzhao" / "Hawk" / "Yin Yishuang" / Ying Di

Ultimate Sculptor

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_f_ying_di.png

Most results on your favorite search engine for “hawk” would only reveal the bird of prey. A slightly deeper search might dig up images and replicas of various sculptures that have appeared throughout Jia III, typically found to include a particular species of bird known as the Canzhao Ying, a hawk active mostly during the twilight periods of the day. The artist has never been identified, but it's generally accepted in the pieces’ small cult following to refer to the artist by the most prevalent subject matter - the twilight hawk.

Chapter 1 Killer

  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Subverted. Black and red are the prominent colors of his clothes, but Hawk is arguably nowhere near evil. He did choose to murder with the intent of saving everyone on the ship, after all, and with the victim's explicit agreement at that.

Indigo Cascini

Ultimate Tattoo Artist

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_n_indigo_cascini.png

Any time you spend in his parlor is sure to be one to remember - past designs line the walls, music always fills the room, and his cheerful personality never fades!

Chisame Hino

Ultimate Journalist

Female | She/Her

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_o_chisame_hino.png

Artists truly are admired only for their tragedy - just look at Poe, Marlowe, Woolfe! All of them, lights snuffed out by the winds called ‘time’ - and so soon as well. Truly, there is no way to advance in a place like the writing field without ending up dead and rotten, blind to the glory your work brings you…

…Or so they said.

Chisame Hino, a true journalist born within this new age - alive and kicking. She isn’t quite famous yet, but she’s definitely… well-known. A tame sort of well-known. Most of the residents of New Petersburg know her as the avid fan of ‘Touma’, a long since gone D-list writer who swept the world up with his senseless ideals. Chisame Hino seems very eager to push that agenda, even temporarily taking his pen name as her own in writing! Everyone’s at a loss in terms of her motives, but there’s no way a star as bright as this could be planning something malicious, right…?

Other than this, not much is truly known about her aside from some rumors of her working on advanced AI in order to improve the quality of her dating sims even more.

  • Eyes Out of Sight: Iya's bangs are long enough to cover her eyes completely. Some characters HINT: Umeka even think that she might be a Cyclops.
  • The Pollyanna: Iya takes in everything that happens in the Killing Game and she seems to internalize it, yet moves on just as quickly, back to being cheerful in no time! Someone has to do it.

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_l_tatsuo_kurosawa.png

Not much is known about Tatsuo Kurosawa’s early childhood. However, it is known that Kurosawa has been studying ancient forms of martial arts since the age of ten and he has been instructing self-defense classes in Sunbard, Ares VI since the age of fourteen. He is the youngest agent to ever be recognized by the United Terran Authority.

  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Works long hours and doesn't get enough sleep.

SYSERROR: NO PROFILE FOUND.

  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Yuuna's eyes are a beautiful shade of ocean blue!... But something about her unblinking stare makes them preeeeeetty unsettling.
  • Creepy Mortician: The personification of this trope, she seems to embrace her reputation - or at the very least, not care at all that people seem unsettled by her.
  • Mad Doctor: Subverted, given that she isn't an actual doctor.
  • Perpetual Smiler: In fact, she literally can't not smile; her face has been stuck in this position for - well, at least as long as Yuuna remembers.
  • White Shirt of Death: Her signature labcoat is covered in bloodstains — it just begs the question as to whose blood it is.
    • Yuuna says she actually can't remember to whom the blood belonged, except that it was one of her patients, and one that was particularly "special" to her.

Arodela Mac Fly

Ultimate Glider

Female | She/Her

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_m_arodela_mac_fly.png

This rising star is someone to look out for, folks. Tetsuya Nakamura

Ultimate Glass Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_q_tetsuya_nakamura.png

Due to modern scientific advancements, plain old glass is considered obsolete for architectural purposes, but has gained popularity in some circles as a medium for art, and the leading face in this field is none other than Tetsuya Nakamura. He was first thrust into the spotlight at the age of eleven, when one of his sculptures was featured in a show in Wenhua’s most famous art museum. After that, people all over Jia III began commissioning him to make their dream sculptures, and nearly every cultural center on the planet has come to be home to at least one of his works. When he’s not travelling to art shows or for his commissions, he sells everything from small trinkets to grand sculptures in his store in Wenhua, Glass Slipper.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Tetsuya loses his left foot during the Chapter 2 escape game event.

Ningyoo Ningyoo

Ultimate Puppeteer

Agender | They/Them

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_j_ningyoo_ningyoo.png

Ningyoo Ningyoo is most widely known by the sheer confusion as to where they came from. It’s almost as if they just showed up one day, putting on their puppet shows. Their fame spiked quickly, going from performances on the street to parodying popular movies and media in their own "unique" way with their puppets. What an enigma!

  • Deadpan Snarker: Despite their odd aloofness, Ningyoo's deadpan asides show that they clearly do have a sense of humor.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Ningyoo's hair obscures their eyes from sight, in a creepy way.
  • The Nicknamer: Or... some type of variation on this. Ningyoo seems to have a difficult time remembering people's names, which means they typically refer to people however they want.

Charlie Rhodes

Ultimate Bassist

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_p_charlie_rhodes.png

Charles Jude Rhodes, better known as Charlie, grew up as the youngest boy of 5 on the outskirts of JIA III where his father, a decorated surgeon, owned a large loft house. The family home became a comfort, the perfect recreational resort both of Charlie's parents could relax at when the pair would take breaks from working with the unfortunate on New Petersburg. According to an interview done with Vibe, Charlie began his musical career at the age of 4, his father putting him into classical musical lessons where he first started with piano, though as he himself grew up, moved to cello and double bass. During this time, he took part of many recitals, particularly playing for the posh upper class during their evergreen events.

Once hitting his early teens, Charlie took a break from classical music, moving into playing bass guitar. It was a transition Charlie himself has called an easy one multiple times on his social media Q&A's. The young talent played in multiple major festivals and parades, filling in for some of the most popular groups at the time; such as leading bands Metallic Shuttle and Plastic Animals.

Taking the plunge, his parents urging him to follow his dreams, Charlie is now residing with his oldest brother, Felix Rhodes (30, Architect) in the dead center of JIA III where he met fellow bandmates; Kou Iwai, Taro Wada, and Aki Yogi, forming the dreampop group: "SHORE." The new wave of music has been sweeping the galaxies off its feet, the boys now Household Names across the stars after their first album went platinum. What the future holds for the talent is truly unlimited.

  • Attention Whore: From the get go, Charlie has demanded to be the center of attention. In prologue, he was revealed to be jealous of the attention Yunna received for being dead.
  • Idle Rich: You ever have so much money you just don’t have to do anything? Charlie has been implied he grew up so spoiled, he didn’t have to worry about common tools of the trade such as reading. He spends his time enjoying parties, fashion, and living the high life. The joys of new money!
  • The Prima Donna: Charlie is know for his expression of his assets and importance. Just SO rich! Just SO much better than you! To the public he may be a cute little boy, but the closer you get the more you wonder about his real personality.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Charlie is obsessed and has an attachment to the old Terran culture; the 80s. While living generations and generations ahead, the boy had a custom jacket made around the old aesthetics.

Shaun Rose

Ultimate Linguist

Male | He/Him

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delref_c_shaun_rose.png

Shaun Rose, a young but talented linguist from Jia III, made his name by studying the cultural and linguistic differences of various planets. His mother’s job as a famous singer and his father’s as a well-known athlete means he always had more than enough money to occasionally travel to other planets and study their cultures. However, despite his mastery of almost a dozen different languages (along with English/whatever the common language is, he’s studied various sub-dialects and lesser-used languages on the various planets), the boy can’t speak worth a damn: painfully introverted and suffering from a terrible stutter, he usually prefers not to speak if he can help it.

  • Break the Cutie: Like all of the other cute and pure characters in this game, Shaun seems to have a lot of heartbreak coming his way.
