The Codemasters Software Company Limited, trading as simply Codemasters, is a British video game developer and publisher founded in 1986 by Richard and David Darling. In their early years, they mostly published budget games for 8-bit computers such as the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. Many of their early releases had "Simulator" or "Stuntman" in their titles, though practically none of these had any relation to each other or qualified as Simulation Games (which those were Codemasters' first attempts back then, due to hardware limitations). They also entered the Nintendo Entertainment System market through Camerica, who published them as an unlicensed third-party, as well creating Cheat Code devices like Game Genie and Aladdin Deck Enhancer. Later they were known for the Colin McRae Rally series and other motorsports titles, also known for get the Formula One license since The New '10s. In 2020, Take-Two Interactive announced its intention to buy Codemasters but by December of that year, Electronic Arts outbid Take-Two with an $1.2 billion offer to buy them which led to Take-Two giving up in January of that year with the sale to EA being completed on February 2021.
