    Amane Fujimiya

Voiced by: Taito Ban
  • Brainy Brunette: He's got dark hair and is smart enough to get good grades, starting out in the top 30 of his year and eventually ranking in the top 10 when he starts studying more.
  • Determinator: He gradually becomes this as the series goes on when things involve Mahiru. Case in point, he decides to better himself to stand by Mahiru. He starts out by studying intensely to get into the top 10 of his year and succeeds whereas before he only ever made it into the top 30.
  • Genre Savvy: He's entirely aware of anime and manga rom-com clichés and has a habit of calling them out internally when he comes across them. He also recognizes that they happen a lot when he interacts with Mahiru, but refuses to believe it could actually be setting anything up for them.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: His own father claims that Amane would look more handsome if he took the time to do his hair. When he does just that for New Years, Mahiru is quite taken with it, even outright telling Amane that he looks cool, much to his embarrassment.
  • Ill Guy: A downplayed example; at the start of the series, Amane is noted to be somewhat on the frail and sickly side because he takes so little care of himself. Shortly after Mahiru starts giving him some properly-prepared meals instead of his constant juice packs he persisted on previously, Itsuki outright notices and points out that Amane's complexion is improving as a result, and while he doesn't "recover" over night, his health notably does get better as the series goes on.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He has notable self-confidence issues due to a bad experience in middle school. It's the main reason why he remains hesitant in furthering his relationship with Mahiru, even as she becomes more forward in expressing her feelings for him.
  • Men Can't Keep House: His apartment at the beginning of the story is a stereotypical Lonely Bachelor Pad that's near unnavigable with the mess strewn about it, not to mention Amane mostly fed himself with jelly drinks beforehand. Mahiru winds up helping clean and cook for him partially out of thanks, and partially out of indignation that her neighbour is such a slob.
  • Nice Guy: He's a Deadpan Snarker with plenty of banter and has some bad habits, but at the end of the day he's also a kind and caring individual who has a keen eye for when others are troubled, going out of his way to aid them. One example is seeing Mahiru sitting on a bench, and after a Sherlock Scan of fur on her uniform combined with one shoe off, he immediately recognized that she sprained her ankle getting a cat out of a tree — and proceeds to get an ice pack, make a compress for her and carry her home without so much as a fuss.
  • Oblivious to Love: It takes him a fair bit to realize Mahiru gained a crush on him too, as the two suffer Cannot Spit It Out for a while. Mahiru ultimately has to be the one that is forward with her feelings towards him to resolve it and get him out of his shell.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: He's a young man with little female experience suddenly having consistent encounters with Mahiru. His outer words tend to be snarky towards the both of them when he isn't helping her with something or giving thanks, but his inner thoughts genuinely cannot stop focusing on her for all the smallest details, even though he explicitly notes that he shouldn't even attempt a relationship with her or take advantage of the situation early on, and even has an Erotic Dream at one point because his hormones are out of control.

  • Abusive Parents: It's clear from early subjects that anything bringing up her parents is a proverbial landmine of a topic that instantly sours her mood, causing Amane to steer clear while he can until Mahiru opens up more about it on her own. Turns out she's a victim of Parental Neglect so bad that they don't celebrate her birthdays, don't call her by name, and don't even seem to care for her existing beyond tuition and living expenses. This is actually the catalyst of the plot, as Amane finding her on the Trauma Swing crying in the rain was entirely because she was suffering a Heroic BSoD over this.
  • Academic Alpha Bitch: Averted. While Mahiru ranks 1st in her year in terms of grades, she's a kind and gentle soul who truly deserves the nickname of "Angel".
  • Affectionate Nickname: Chitose calls her "Mahirun."
  • Birthday Hater: She seems to be completely ignorant to her own birthday approaching, and Amane sets up a celebration as thanks for all the help she'd given him. While not hating her birthday, Mahiru clearly never expected any of this, since her own parents never cared for her birthdays, causing her to not care either.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: One of the ways Chitose complements her looks was by commenting on her "well-proportioned body" while looking directly at her chest.
  • Covert Pervert: Once Amane tells her about his Erotic Dream, Mahiru's immediate response is to ask him what she did in that dream "for future reference."
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Most people at the school idolize her but don't see Mahiru for who she is, and her parents simply do not care about her one bit. So once Amane actually approaches her as an equal rather than any sort of fan and gradually helps her open her true self up more, Mahiru starts to get any possible excuse she can find to interact with him more without even realizing she was doing it, before eventually realizing she fell in love.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Most people at school refer to her as "Angel," which she really dislikes.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Very downplayed, as she actually seems to be envious of Amane's relationship with his Good Parents, but more so in a "good for you" way than a genuine jealousy.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair and is a real sweetheart.
  • Hidden Buxom: The clothes she normally wears are very conservative, which makes the statement about her "well-proportioned body" hard to tell at a glance.
  • Irony:
    • Amane admired her for the longest time, mostly from a distance, but when they start getting closer together, he tries to keep some of that distance for both their sakes as well as personal insecurities lingering from middle school. Mahiru didn't even spare Amane a glance until he helped her, and ends up being the one to rapidly fall in love with Amane the more they interact as well as the one ready to actually pursue the relationship.
    • Because of her Parental Neglect, Mahiru doesn't know how to enjoy or even reward herself for a job well done. For as much as she helps Amane and spoils him rotten, he actually realizes that no one's ever spoiled her, and starts going out of his way to do so thinking she deserves it.
  • Nice Girl: Though she has her inner conflict to deal with, Shiina is a very kind, selfless, helpful and polite girl.
  • Shrinking Violet: Get her out of her element and Mahiru quickly starts to shut down and fumble over herself until she can get her thoughts back together. Her first meeting with Shihoko particularly invokes this, repeatedly saying the wrong things as a meek mess and even accidentally calling her mother when trying to say He's Not My Boyfriend for Amane.
  • Stepford Smiler: The entire school sees the Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold angel beauty that is The Ace in all class fields, with an unfailing image for her. Once Amane gets close enough, he sees between the cracks to find a depressed, lonely girl that doesn't think she's worth anyone's love and is overworking herself to the extremes for parental approval she'll never receive.
  • Tsundere: On the dere side, as she's very meek about the idea of anyone romancing her and tends to get hit hard by Amane's kindness or compliments. Bits of tsun come out every once in a while, but it's never in a serious manner, such as feeling like she's being teased and lightly slapping Amane's arm harmlessly. Once she comes to terms with her feelings, it's nothing but a sweet-hearted dere from there when she isn't chastising him for his bad habits.
  • "Well Done, Daughter" Girl: The crux of why she's so aloof and takes her studies absolutely seriously, as Mahiru believes if she's the perfect child one day her parents might finally notice her. She's been doing this since childhood, to no avail, but is so stuck in routine that she can't readily break herself of it either. It takes her relationship with Amane and finding her own route to happiness to start to break this mindset finally.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Chitose calls him "Ikkun."
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: In a rare example of a father not liking his son's girlfriend, it's brought up that Itsuki's dad doesn't approve of his relationship with Chitose.
