Party Members

    Yue Qingshu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sword_and_fairy_7_yue_qingshu.png
The protagonist of the game, Yue Qingshu is the only disciple of declining Mingshu Sect. She accidentally forms a spiritual link with Xiu Wu, and starts travelling with him to foil Heaven Demons' plans to invade Human Realm.
    Xiu Wu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sword_and_fairy_7_xiu_wu.png
A Deity General, who was tasked with assassination of the leader of Heaven Demons - Kuiyu. He fails and, heavily wounded, ends up in Human Realm.
  • Arrow Catch: In the prologue he blocks an arrow fired by a Garuda soldier in this manner.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Late in the game he gets affected by the same curse as Vicious Beasts and goes berserk. Yo has to use sedative on him.
  • Brutal Honesty: Tends not to sugarcoat what he says, mostly due to poor understanding of humans. In-game encyclopedia even lampshades his unintended rudeness.
  • Charged Attack: Has a couple of skills that become far stronger, if the player charges them.
  • Comically Serious: When his poor understanding of humans is Played for Laughs.
  • Flash Step: Replaces his dash.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Swords, mostly.
  • Standard Power-Up Pose: Uses one for his self-buffing skills, although he spreads his arms a little further than usual for the pose.
  • Storm of Blades: Has two skills that bombard the area with swords.
  • Sword Beam: One of his combos and Joint Strikes make use of these.
  • Transflormation: As a New Deity, he originally was a spirit fruit, imbued with Chunzi spring energy. After his "fight" with Chonglou he returns to the fruit form, and gains his human form back only after Qingshu bites the fruit and unknowingly forms a spiritual link with him.
    • One sidequest clarifies that it was not so accidental, as Xiu Wu instinctively drawed in the closest person with high spiritual energy to form a link with.
    Bai Moqing
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sword_and_fairy_7_bai_moqing.png
A disciple of Xianxia Sect, and an old friend of Yue Qingshu.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Due to Limited Move Arsenal she plays like this. To sum up: she has five damaging spells, five enchantments, that strengthen some of her spells, a Limit Break, and a mana restoration move. All that must be fitted in eight slots. So, the player must either play resourcefully, with attention to active enchantments and mana pool, or not use Moqing to her full potential.
  • Elemental Powers: Fire, Thunder, Ice, Wind and Earth. She can enchant her basic attacks and some of these enchantments strengthen certain attack skills. For example, Fire skill becomes stronger, if Fire or Earth enchant is in effect.
  • Out of Focus: Downplayed, but still here. While she does have her own subplot, it doesn't gain a real resolution until the epilogue. Her solo segments are also short and don't have any required fights.
  • Paper Master: Her weapon are sets of Fulu, a type of Taoist Paper Talismans. She also uses her abilities outside of combat, like sending letters via paper cranes.
    Sang Yo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sword_and_fairy_7_sang_yo.png
A wandering doctor with a crush on Moqing.

Human Realm

    Ziqiu
The Chosen Child, who lives in the Tianshi Sect and is being used as the vessel for Deity Lord Aoxu, who dictates his will to the Sect. Later, it's revealed that he is the child of two Deities, who fell in love despite the prohibition, and were sentenced to imprisonment for life. He and several other such children were imprisoned alongside their parents. Kuiyu managed to save all of them but Ziqiu, and he fell to Aoxu's hands.
  • Gilded Cage: He was held in a single room for as long as he can remember. While Sect members take care of all his needs, he still notes how boring it is. No wonder he gets so attached to Qingshu after she showed him around a village.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He can't remember what happened before he found himself in care of Tianshi Sect, and any attempt to remember causes him intense headache. It's been inflicted on him by Aoxu, while remaking him into a suitable host.
  • Raised as a Host: Tianshi Sect values him so much in part because Deity Lord Aoxu uses Ziqiu to convey his will. The reality is far more disturbing. He was actually somehow "modified" by Aoxu to be a perfect vessel for him. Now, he can possess Ziqiu basically anywhere in Human Realm with no apparent limit.
    Master Mengzhang
Master of a prosperous Tianshi Sect. He was entrusted with safekeeping of Ziqiu, the Chosen Child and a vessel for Deity Lord Aoxu. Later it's revealed that his faith in Deities is so absolute, that he fully supports Aoxu's plan and acts as The Dragon for him.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He's surprisingly adept in combat, although it could be attributed to his usage of Vicious Beasts' power.
  • Super-Empowering: He keeps "power marbles" of defeated Vicious Beasts, and puts them to use when he fights the party. It lets him summon apparitions of said Vicious Beasts to deliver their most annoying attack.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's practically impossible to talk about him without mentioning his role in the second half of the game.
    Master Yuxia
Master of Xianxia Sect, and The Mentor for Bai Moqing. Her real name is Shen Qishuang, and she's a returning character from Sword and Fairy 2.
    Bai family
Bai Songhuan and Bai Zhongqiao are Moqing's older brothers, who appear to use slave labor for mining some sort of mineral called "Ice Ore". Later, it turns out that they are actually in league with Aoxu and Mengzhang, and try to use their powers to stage a coup on the emperor.
    Elemental Spirits
Elemental spirits, that Qingshu gathers during her journey.

Qiaoling

A young spirit of Thunder, Qiaoling is the last spirit that remains in Mingshu Sect. She hatched when Qingshu was only eight, and was raised alongside her.

Hazhan

A spirit of Ice, and the partner of one of the former Masters of Mingshu Sect. The party goes to him to ask him to return to the Sect, but it turns out that his last partner put a restraining spell on him to speed up his own spirit cultivation. Hazhan is naturally pissed over this, and attacks the party.
  • Defrosting Ice King: At first, he tries to outright kill the party, who came to talk with him, and even the library calls him "cold and cruel". However, he eventually comes to trust Qingshu, and even vouches for her to a fellow spirit.
  • An Ice Person: He's the spirit of Ice, after all.
  • Panthera Awesome: In his true form he looks like some sort of big cat.

Chengfeng

A spirit of Wind, that the party saves from Vicious Beast Chiru.
  • Blow You Away: As the Wind spirit, she can create powerful tornadoes. However, for the most part she uses her powers for healing, and attacks only during Qingshu's Limit Break.
  • Healing Winds: She is the spirit of Wind, and her summons heal the party.
  • Sole Survivor: Chengfeng is the only survivor from her tribe, who were hunted down by Tianshi Sect uner orders from Mengzhang.

Shengyan

A young spirit of Fire, that lives in East Azure Abyss. After the party proves themselves to the eldest spirit in the tribe, Shengyan asks to travel with them.
    Vicious Beasts
Vicious Beasts is a group of several rogue spirits, who were imprisoned in Heaven Prison and released by Kuiyu several years ago. They rampage across the Human Realm, forcing various Sects to protect settlements with magic barriers. Later it's revealed that they wreck havoc not on their own will, being driven mad by some kind of curse.
  • Tragic Monster: When the party manages to briefly bring them back to their senses, they're genuinely confused why they are even here. The party then is forced to deal a Mercy Kill. It turns out that they were driven mad by Aoxu's curse.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: They become victims of this at the hands of Mengzhang, who takes their powers for himself.

Xiqu

The very first Vicious Beast that Qinshu meets, Xiqu used to be a spirit of Ice.

Hualiu

The second Vicious Beast, Hualiu was the spirit of Fire. She was able to suppress her madness with special flowers.
  • Playing with Fire: It's specifically mentioned that she burned down several villages in her rampage.

Chiru

The third Vicious Beast, that lay dormant in the river near Lulong Town. He looks like a giant fish, and wields the power of Thunder.
  • Shock and Awe: Despite being a fish-like creature, he wields the power of Thunder.

Jiuying

The fourth and final Vicious Beast, who attacks the party in Quanyin village, at the orders of Aoxu.
  • Multiple Head Case: Nine heads, five of them with the power of Fire and four - with the power of Ice. He appears to have a single consciousness, though.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: He wields both Fire and Ice.

Devildom

    Kuiyu
The leader of Heaven Demons, a group of Deities who betrayed their kind and fled to Devildom. She aims to take over the Human Realm. Except not really. Her real goal is to save Chosen Children from execution at the hands of Knight Templar Deities.
  • Badass Cape: Long red cape, that gives her a rather impressive silhouette.
  • Blade Run: Chain run, actually. She does this in her fight against Aoxu.
  • Big Bad: She's set up to be one, with all the plans to invade Human Realm and releasing Vicious Beasts. Subverted in the end. Vicious Beasts were released by Aoxu, and Kuiyu's actual goal it to merely save Chosen Children.
  • Big Good: What she really is. She takes a proactive role in stopping the real Big Bad, Aoxu, and doesn't go after him herself only because he hides in Deity Realm. Instead, she directs the heroes towards their goal, and later stalls for time against Garuda tribe.
  • Dash Attack: During the battle she can lunge at Xiu Wu, and if the attack connects, she will pierce him with a spear, throw him to the ground, jump, and pierce him a second time.
  • Hold the Line: In the finale of the game she and several other Heaven Demons protect the portal from Garuda tribe, who believed that Deities tried to starve them to death. If Demons were to invade Deity realm, it would mean a new war.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Despite being a demon, she deeply cares for her subordinates. In fact, she betrayed other Deities precisely because they pratically left several children of New Deities to die. This trait of her contrasts with Aoxu, who is perfectly willing to sacrifice loyal subordinates to get a slim chance to harm his enemies.
  • Red Baron: Heaven Witch.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: One of her attacks creates a falcon, and another has her throw a dragon at you.
    Heaven Demons
A group of rogue Deities, who followed Kuiyu to Devildom and turned to Demons. They try to abduct the Chosen Child for unknown reasons.

Youlian

The first Heaven Demon met by the heroes, Youlian is one of top enforcers of Kuiyu.
  • Magic Music: She fights with a lute-like instrument, and uses it to cast music-based spells.

Zhankui

Another Heaven Demon, who accompanies Kuiyu in her assault on Tianshi Sect.
    Chonglou
A Demon Lord, who wounds Xiu Wu at the start of the game and takes Chunzi sword from him. Later he turns out to be an unofficial Guard of Yanbo spring. He's actually a recurring character, being prominently featured in Sword and Fairy 3.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: He's far stronger than almost everyone involved, as demonstrated when he floors the party with one attack. However, he's busy with protection of Yanbo spring, and also lacks information. And when he gets the full picture, he can't directly intervene, because he's a Demon, and him showing up in Deity Realm would mean war, just like Aoxu planned.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up at the end of the game to help Kuiyu in defending portal to Deity Realm from other Demons.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: A short blade on each hand.
  • Dash Attack: Like Kuiyu, he can lunge at the player and skewer lead character with one of his blades, and then follow with a cross-shaped slash.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: His hair is red, and he wields fire magic.
  • Grapple Move: If the player makes a mistake of standing too close to him, he will grab Xiu Wu and violently throw him to the ground.
  • Horned Humanoid: His only truly inhuman feature. Demonic version, of course.
  • Playing with Fire: He throws volleys of fireballs at the party both in cutscenes and gameplay.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes and is a powerful Demon, who attacks the party on sight. Downplayed, as he's actually one of the more reasonable Demons, and ends up helping the party.

Deity Realm

    Aoxu (spoilers!)
Deity Lord, who communicates his will to Tianshi Sect by possessing Ziqiu. He is Xiu Wu's boss, and orders him to eliminate rampaging Vicious Beasts following his failure in assassinating Kuiyu. He's actually the Big Bad of the story, plotting to provoke Demons to start a new war to use it as an excuse to enact the Final Solution on them.
  • Chain Pain: He fights with several magical golden chains that he can control freely.
  • The Chessmaster: Over the course of thousands years he set up several of his superiors to gain more power, until he became the Guard of Chunzi spring. He put a ban on procreation for Deities, and after several Deities broke it, he called for imprisonment of both parents and children. Even though Kuiyu managed to save most of these children, he altered the remaining one to become his vessel and sent him to Tianshi Sect. Then, he had Mengzhang and the Bai family create a device that would temporary seal Yanbo spring, thus depriving Devildom of spirit energy and dooming Demons to extinction. And if they waged a war on Deities, it would be a violation of Covenant of Three Emperors, thus turning both Deities and Humans on them.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: In the final battle he creates several copies of himself to attack the party with giant chains from every direction.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He spends most of the game in "Phantom" form, forming an enormous translucent projection of himself around possessed Ziqiu. Even by himself he's inexplicably very big, being about one and a half time the height of most other characters.
  • Fantastic Racism: On Demons and even some Deities.
    • He hates Demons so much, he schemed for thousands of years just to orchestrate a new war with them. His final goal is to enact the Final Solution on them.
    • He hates New Deitiesnote  with a passion, claiming them all defective traitors. He sees Xiu Wu's "betrayal" as a proof of this belief.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He dies after being stabbed by Chunzi sword through his chest so hard, that the blade goes all the way through, leaving only the hilt on the other side.
  • Monster Protection Racket: He released imprisoned spirits from the Heaven Prison and cursed them, turning them into Vicious Beasts. Then he orders Xiu Wu to kill them, thus gaining support to himself and Mengzhang-led Tianshi Sect.
  • Power Floats: He near-constantly floats even when not using "phantom" form. It makes him look even bigger than he already is.
  • Shock and Awe: In the final battle he can call down a bolt of lightning on the lead character. He probably considers it a Bolt of Divine Retribution.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He's seen as a loyal Deity in Heaven Realm and a caring god in Human Realm.
  • Walking Spoiler: Almost nothing is known about him before the second half of the game, when his plans start to come to light.
