Piper’s Crew

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0501.jpeg
From center and clockwise: Piper, Sally, Dora, Bea, Bill, Valentine, Grahame, Gabriel and Bogdan.
A group of Steambots who have joined with Piper’s pirate crew after she convinces them to join her.
  • Band of Brothers: They certainly view each other as family, protecting and caring for one another.
  • Friendly Pirate: They may be smugglers of contraband items but they also make heists against the Scrappers, the Royalists and the Vectron Hive.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: They all come from different places and have joined with Piper for whatever reasons they may have. Some joined her because they want adventure, because she promised to pay well or because they no longer have somewhere to go.
  • Space Pirate: They are a group of pirates who smuggle contraband material and commit heists. Well, heists against bad guys so it’s all good.
    Piper Faraday
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0502.png
Smuggler captain Piper Faraday and her trusty Pilot, Wonky, hide out in the Outskirts, far away from any royal jail. Brings out the best in her crewmates
In-game description
Captain Piper Faraday is the lead protagonist of the game. She is the Captain of her space pirate crew, and is able to use both Handgun and Sharpshooter weapons.
  • Boring Yet Practical: Piper's abilities aren't flashy. She can't bring along a free rocket launcher, fire a tesla coil, snipe as well as Valentine, tank as well as Ivanski, or kill as well as Sally and Seabrass. What she *can* do is make all of them much better at their jobs, and completely repair the entire team in one turn. She can dish out some respectable damage if you give her a decent gun, too.
  • The Captain: She is the leader of a crew of space pirates and the captain of her own ship.
  • A Mother To Her Men: Piper treats all her crewmembers as her family and is willing to do anything to protect them.
  • Defector from Decadence: She used to be a pilot for the Royalists back in the day. One day, she was ordered to deliver a mysterious payload to a settlement. Turns out, the payload were actually bombs to destroy a rebel base that was hidden in the settlement and her superiors attempted to trick her into dropping the bombs. Disgusted by the scummy behavior of the Royalists, she quits with the Royalists and becomes a smuggler instead.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inverted. Her hair is red-colored and she is a calmed and chill Steambot who can reason with people.
  • Friendly Sniper: She can use Sharpshooter type guns which all come with a scope for better aim and she is a very friendly fellow with everyone she meets.
  • Good Job Breaking It Hero: When she defeats the Red Queen and goes to where Vectron is locked, they immediately escape to start their own robot Voltbot army to conquer the universe.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Even though it is up to the player how well they play, Piper is known for her aiming skills, she even has an aiming device inside her eyes too!
  • Statuesque Stunner: Piper is not only the tallest female playable character, but one of the tallest characters of the entire franchise. Unfortunately, this also means almost half of the covers in the game still leave her open to enemy fire.
    Wonky
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0512.png
Wonky is a pilot, built into Captain Piper's ship. He is good natured, and would not have stayed with Piper for so long if he didn't know she was a good person
  • Cool Old Guy: A old partner who has stayed with Piper for a long time, they have been friends and advice one another time to time.
    Garbriel “Seabrass” Stubb
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0503_0.jpeg
This dour whaler-bot lost everything he held dear when the Royalists monopolized the whale oil industry. He's good at heading up the vanguard.
In-game description
Gabriel "Seabrass" Stubb is the resident veteran of the ship and has fought a hundred battles alongside his captain. He is a Vanguard-class member for Piper's crew and is able to use both Handgun and Assault weapons
  • The Ahab: He tried to hunt down a white whale that ate and killed his son back when seas of water were still around. He laments that he can’t keep killing whales anymore.
  • Moby Schtick: Seabrass is a walking reference to Moby-Dick, with his backstory involving a vendetta story against a whale.
  • Space Whale: Discussed. As a former non-space whaler, and the only crew member that actually sailed a sea made of water, Seabrass laments they don't exist.
  • Space Pirate: Even more so than the rest of his teammates. Gabriel talks like a pirate, has a hook and a peg leg and is the only one that actually sailed in an actual sea.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: "Gyaaaaarrggh! Seabrass be talkin' this way, cap'n!" He even says "Shiver me timbers!" when his hat's shot off.

    Sally Bolt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0504.jpeg
Once they lost the moisture farm, Sally's sibling spread out through the Outskirts, leaving her to fend for herself. This farm girl's both stubborn and trigger happy.
In-game description
Sally Bolt is a former moisture farmer who took up the position of Bounty Hunter after Royalist drilling destroyed her family's farm. She's stubborn and trigger happy, and can use Handgun and Assault type weapons
  • The Berserker: Her ability, aptly named Berserk, makes her do the double of damage when she is reduced to half of her health.
  • Dumb Muscle: She was a moisture farmer in the past and didn’t got proper education so she may appear as The Ditz for some bots. Nevertheless, she is one hell of a fighter.
  • Farm Girl: Before joining Piper, Sally and her family used to work in a moisture farm where they harvested water for the Steambots. Until the Royalists started to dig near the farm they lived and due to the oil extraction of the floor, the water harvested was now black and dirty, unable to be used properly. After that, her family lost the farm and has been on their own ways since then.
  • Fiery Redhead: Her color is of color red and she is prone to anger.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She sports to in her hair.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is rather rude but she means well.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: While she may be a hothead all the time, the reason why she is like she is, is because the Royalists made a digging site near the farm of her family’s moisture farm, making the water they produced unusable. After this, the family business couldn’t keep up and had to leave one another. When Sally reveals this to Piper, she nearly cries because of it. Poor girl.
    Bogdan “The Great” Ivanski
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0505.jpeg
Circus strongmen need to project strength, so once rumors about the Great Ivanski's soft spot spread, harsh words made him leave the big top. Knows how to take a punch.
In-game description
Bogdan "The Great" Ivanski is the resident muscle of the crew and the embodiment of physical strength. Ivanski sets a focus on and excels at taking damage, taunting enemies and dealing that damage straight back out again. Having worked in the circus in the past, he left after people started to laugh at him because he liked ballet, joins up with Piper after she pays him well. Can use both Handguns and Heavy Weapons.
  • Husky Russkie: Bogdan Ivanski, circus strongman and Mighty Glacier.
  • Made of Iron: Puns aside, all of Bodgan's passives are about surviving ridiculous damage, complete with an active ability to No-Sell any attack for one turn. The latter can also be gained through an item he can equip.
  • Mighty Glacier: He is slow and can’t move as fast as the other members, but he packs a lot of punch.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Bogdan tried to learn ballet dancing, but clownbots at his circus made fun of him for it and making him leave the circus. When prompted by Piper, he notes that ballet takes as much strength and bettering of the body as being a strongman like he is. After defeating Vectron, he decides he will establish a ballet academy rather than stay on with Piper's crew.
  • Shout-Out: Bogdan is one to Heavy Weapons Guy. They both even say to stay behind them when they are defending someone
    Beatrix “Bea” Baach
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0509.jpeg
Beatrix is a soldier without an army, the last in a long line of soldiers, just looking for war to fight. Knows how to clear a path with explosives.
In-game description
Coming from a family of soldiers, Beatrix is another soldier of her line who was shipping some explosives to some miners, she was assaulted by a group of Scrappers but she managed to beat them off but they stole some cargo from her. She later sent a distress signal that was intercepted by Piper and she offers Bea to join her crew. She can use handguns and heavy weapons
  • Badass in Distress: Bea sends a distress signal after suffering an attack of Scrappers when she was shipping explosives to a mining town.
  • Lady of War: Beatrix is the only experienced soldier in Piper's crew.
  • Macro Missile Massacre: Bea's multi-shot passive when coupled with a multi-shot weapon like the Desolator inundates the already-cramped spaceships with things that go boom. While invaluable during boss fights or to cull the Respawning Enemies overcrowding you, be mindful of oil patches and Friendly Fire.

    Valentine Butterbolt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0507_1.jpeg
Valentine had a secure life as a chimney engineer. Now retired, he's looking for high adventure. Don't let his shaking fool you, if he's stationary, he's steady.
In-game description
Valentine Butterbolt is a browny-grey colored Steambot who used to worked as a chimney sweeper for the Royalists, but after hitting the retirement age he was sent to the retirement home. Thinking that there is more in his life after retirement, Piper recruits him and he can enjoy the adventures he dreamed off. He is a Sentry class fighter that is able to use Handguns and Sharpshooters.
  • Cool Old Guy: Valentine. He's adamant about not spending the rest of his lifespan in an old bots retirement home.
  • Friendly Sniper: Just like Piper, he can use sharpshooter guns and is a nice old bot who likes cracking jokes (to Seabrass’ dismay)
    Grahame “Payroll Phroggi”
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0506.jpeg
An accomplished con-artist, quick on the draw and down on his luck. Motivated by swag to push his mobility to the limit and prefers to shoot bots in the back.
In-game description
A down on his luck Steambot, Payroll is an accomplished con-artist that has managed to scam to several bots in his life, even managing to scam the Royalists like its nothing. Due to his mad luck and ability in the guns, Piper sees in Payroll a great crewmen and recruits him. He uses both Handguns and Assault guns.
  • Con Artist: Grahame is known for scamming several bots in his life.
    Dora D. Aventura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0508.jpeg
A former scientist of the Royal Court who doubts the Queen's true interest in science. She's good at covering ground and knows how to shoot from a distance.
In-game description
A scientist that used to work for the Red Queen, she defects in favor of Piper after she finds nothing of use in researching for the Royalists. She uses both Handguns and Sharpshooter guns.
    Bill Gills
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0510.jpeg
Billy lost his ability to speak when a Deep Space dive went horribly wrong. Nevertheless, he's a fearless fighter.
In-game description
An ex-sailor who lost his voice after an accident in Deep Space, Bill joins with Piper in The Core. Can only use Handguns but is a melee fighter like no other team is able to fight on.
  • Fish People: Or Fish Bot, but Bill is noticeably one of the few characters in the franchise that is clearly an anthropomorphic animal.
  • Life Drain: Billy's "Vampire" passive heals him if he melees anyone to death. Give him a melee-boosting item or two and he can become functionally immortal.
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever cost Billy his ability to speak probably also was why he left the diver corps.
  • The Unintelligible: Billy only ever talks in "blub", but for the rest of the crew, Billy is comprehensible and talks as if he was speaking normal.
  • Use Your Head: Billy's melee attack is a headbutt. He's also your strongest melee combatant, go figure.

    FEN (Spoiler Alert)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0511.jpeg
Cobbling your maimed remains together from junkyard scraps is not an easy feat, Fen even managed to implement a few aggressive improvements to boot
In-game description
The same sprite who was the partner of Dorothy in SteamWorld Dig 2, she returns back in Heist, having survived the explosion and subsequent destruction of Earth but they have amnesia now and don’t remember who they are anymore. They join with Piper because they are the only person they can really trust with. They can use Handguns and Heavy Weapons as weapon choices.
  • Not Quite Dead: Turns out, Fen didn’t die in the end of SteamWorld Dig 2, she managed to survive, somehow, but she was taken by the Royalists to be studied and was later thrown by them, with their core being stolen by the Scrappers.

Scrapper Gangs

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0513.png
A gang of bandits and thugs who are led by a mysterious bot named Chop Sue, they are essentially zombie robots who are made from cobbled up parts of dead Steambots and revived thanks to Sue’s techronomantic powers.
  • Ax-Crazy: Due to being being made out of parts of different Steambots and therefore, the personalities of the deceased Steambots of those parts start to mix too much, it makes them mentally unstable. Because of this, the Scrappers are known to for being incredibly aggressive thugs that plunder any ship they see.
  • Body Horror: From the mechanical point of view of the Steambots, they are the equivalent of a army of Frankenstein monsters that attack anyone they come across.
  • Giant Scrap Robot: The Crusher Scrappers are bigger than the rest of their cousins.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: The Scrappers are a faction of Ax-Crazy robots built out of scrap parts from other dead robots, Whose leader is the mechanical equivalent of a necromancer.
  • Robo Family: Apparently, they all view themselves as cousins and family because they are all resurrected by Chop Sue.
    Chop Sue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0629_8.jpeg
"Prepare to be scrapped and re-birthed into beautiful Scrapper children."
-Chop Sue during her battle introduction
The leader of the Scrapper gangs, Chop Sue is the mad Steambot that has been making the Scrapper robots using a strange technology that was hidden by the Royalists, reverse-engineering it and turning her arm into a piece of that technology to reanimate dead Steambots to life and turning them into the Scrappers. Motivated to destroy the Royalists, she plans to kill all the Steambots to increase her army and take down the Royalists. The technology Sue uses is actually Vectron technology that allows her to use her techronomatic powers.
  • Necromancer: What she becomes after taking the technology that allows her to resurrect Steambots into Scrappers.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Sue claims that she is sending her Scrappers to plunder Steambot ships to get enough scrap and make an army strong enough to take down the Royalists. But her methods are just too cruel that it undermines her intentions.
    Jester
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0630_3.jpeg
The first of the Scrappers that Chop Sue made, he was kicked out for being too crazy even for her and he and his personal group of Scrappers have been harassing Steambots in the Outskirts. He is also the one who ripped Fen from their core and gave it to the other Scrappers.
  • Ax-Crazy: Even amongst Scrappers, Jester is more crazier than all of them, so crazy even Sue kicked him out of the gang.

Royal Space Force

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0514.png
The Royal Space Force, or the Royalists, are the governing group of robots who are in control of The Core and the Outskirts, they are diesel-driven robots who have been abusing their power for years, turning water into a currency and since they work on diesel, they don’t have the same problems the Steambots have. Their goal is to rebuild Earth by attaching pieces of the planet back into its place. They are the second enemy faction we will encounter in The Core.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Where did the Dieselbots came from? Before Heist, there was no evidence that there were robots powered by diesel. Did they already existed during the events of Dig and Dig 2 or did some Steambots decided to change their steam-driven technology to a more advanced oil-driven technology in order to survive better after the destruction of Earth and the increasing lack of water?
  • Bayonet Ya: The average Royalist soldier uses a rifle with a blade on its end that can be used for both shooting and melee.
  • Dieselpunk: Unlike the Steambots who use steam to work, the Royalists use oil and diesel to work.
  • Evil Empire: They are the totalitarian superpower that controls all the territory we see in the game and are very abusive with their power.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Their Dieselpunk-driven technology, their World War II fashion choices, their brutal control over the Steambots and general arrogance and senses of superiority bears a lot of similarities to the Nazis of the past.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: They tell to the Steambots that they are taking more and more territory and have turned water into a currency in order to have enough resources to rebuild Earth, with they territory for attaching Earth back and the water to fill the oceans back. But they are really more interested on holding their power over the Steambots than actually rebuilding the planet.
    The Red Queen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0520.png
"Step into Our Royal Chambers, pirates."
-The Red Queen during her battle introduction
The leader of the Royal Space Force, she is the tyrannical leader of The Core who plans to rebuild Earth and collect long lost knowledge and artifacts of the past. In one of her expeditions, she finds Vectron and their technology and has them imprisoned for research.
  • Ambiguously Related: Her blue paint job and her desire to rebuild Earth back makes her very similar to Dorothy McCrank, implying that it could be a descendant of her, it can’t be Dorothy since she didn’t have a sister like the Red Queen, but it’s still possible to be a descendant of hers if her colors and motives are connected with Dorothy.
  • Badass Bookworm: She seeks any artifacts of the old Earth at any cost, studying every last scrap of knowledge she is able to dig from the fractured rocks for more relics of the past. We first see her silhouette reading a book.
  • Cool Crown: She wears a royal crown.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: The Red Queen seems to be the main villain for the first two acts of the game, but once she's dealt with, Vectron shows up.
  • Evil Overlord: She controls the territory of The Core and the Outskirts with an iron fist, with her laws of using water not as a vital resource but a currency, making water very scarce and massively hoarded by the Royalists, making the Steambots who rely on water to make steam starve.
  • Flunky Boss: When enough health is depleted from her, she calls for Ace and Copperback to help her.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: She uses a pair of revolvers in her boss fight and she is incredibly good at shooting. Even Piper remarks on how good she was.
  • "The Villain Sucks" Song: After the Red Queen is defeated, a song by Steam Powered Giraffe will play called No More Queen starts to play, celebrating the defeat of the Royalists by Piper and her crew.
  • Uncertain Doom: While we do defeat her in her boss battle, since Steambots and Dieselbots are known to be rebuilt back if scrapped, it is unknown if her defeat also means her death or she is rebuilt back and dethroned from her position.
     General Ace and Copperback

Vectron Hive

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0515.png
A Hive Mind of electronic robots who are under the control of Vectron and plan to take over the universe.
  • Cyberpunk: Following the different types of fuel and technology we see in Heist, the Vectron Hive is composed of electronic robots who use electricity as their main source in contrast to the steam-powered Steambots and the diesel-powered Royalists.
  • Hive Mind: They are all connected to the main Vectron robot that is set free after Piper accidentally releases the Hive.
  • Order Is Not Good: They say that they are going to take over the universe to bring order to it and bring peace with it but they are really just seeking power for themselves and are actively trying to kill all non-vectron robots.

    Vectron (Unmarked Spoilers!)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_0523.png
"The chaotic Steambot has no place in the order we seek to establish."
-Vectron during their battle introduction.
The main Vectron robot that controls the entire Hive Mind, they are the one who was imprisoned inside the vaults of the Red Queen and after escaping, they started an army of Voltbots to conquer the universe.
  • BFG: Vectron is on a platform where they shoot highly powerful ray beams from the massive turret they use.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: Vectron takes the place of the Big Bad after the defeat of the Red Queen,
  • Hypocrite: Vectron is quick to blame the Steambots for the destruction of Earth for their chaotic nature. But it was the original Voltbot from SteamWorld Dig that made Rusty the combination of both Steam and Vectron technology that Rosie would later use him to power her mecha-suit and would be the reason that why Earth is blown into pieces in the first place
