In General
- Doomed by Canon: All the known characters already have their fates decided; Peter will die as a martyr in Rome, Pontius Pilate will eventually lose his position as governor, and so on.
- The Empire: All of them live under Rome's aegis.
- Fake Nationality: None of the actors are really Jewish or Italian.
- Historical Domain Character: Most of them.
- The Queen's Latin: All the Roman characters.
Tribune Clavius
- Played by: Joseph Fiennes
A devout and discerning Roman tribune, the equivalent of a lieutenant or colonel in the Roman army. He is normally assigned to putting down rebellions in the Jewish region and is called to investigate Christ's disappearance from his tomb.
Tropes:
- The Ace
- Beneath the Mask: Reveals early on that he's most interested in reaching a position where he can have a family, home, and some stability for once.
- Crisis of Faith
- Deliberate Values Dissonance
- A Father to His Men: Clearly affected by the deaths of his men in the intro.
- Great Detective: He's tasked with finding out how Christ's body disappeared and does a pretty good job, especially for the standards of the time. Notably, he interviews people in a fashion pretty close to modern interviews and knows how to apply pressure or reward to encourage honesty.
- The Hero
- Heroes Prefer Swords
- Mr. Fanservice: Is quite handsome, and even appears in a loincloth during a bath.
- Real Men Love Jesus: Is a devout follower of the gods, particularly Mars. Early on in his investigation, he even does as the Jews do and prays to the Hebrew god, promising that if he is successful he will erect temples and hold games in his honor.
Lucius Tycho Ennius
- Played by: Tom Felton
The son of a powerful Roman politician, Lucius is assigned as Clavius's aide at the start of the Messiah case. Young and impressionable, he both learns from Clavius and is intimidated by him.
Tropes:
- The Ace: Doesn't say much, but does well at anything he's assigned, even taking the initiative on some occasions.
- The Apprentice
- Broken Pedestal
- The Ingenue: Is clearly new to the soldiering business, but is portrayed sympathetically.
- Out of Focus
- You Are in Command Now
Pontius Pilate
- Played by: Peter Firth
Tropes:
- Bad Boss
- Corrupt Politician
- Genre Savvy: Knows immediately that if Jesus's body isn't found he'll be thought of as alive.
- Historical In-Joke
- Jerkass Has a Point
Simon Peter
- Played by: Stewart Scudamore
The head disciple of Yeshua who leads his followers.
Tropes:
- Humble Hero
- Historical Domain Character
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Accidentally sneaks up on Clavius to offer him water and gets slashed in the leg for his trouble. He's fine, though.
Yeshua the Messiah
- Played by: Cliff Curtis
