Shatter Squad

An elite special ops unit comprised of the Alliance's best soldiers.

    West

Agent West / Bruce

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rvb_agent_west_7.jpg
Carolina: West. What's a team of lovable misfits without its father figure? He's your tactical lead and your emotional security blanket. He's also East's actual father - a bit on the nose if you ask me.
Voiced By: André Ouellette
Shatter Squad's gruff and commanding father-figure. He is Agent East's biological father, having given her to the military to save her life due to her ill condition.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Downplayed in that he never left East's life, but he had to give her over to the military in order to save her life.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Downplayednote , but at one point, West instructs a non-MJOLNIR-armored recruit to "stand up straight" before dropping a very large-and-heavy-looking rocket launcher into the poor trooper's arms.
  • A Father to His Men: He's a stern old codger and the Drill Sergeant Nasty of Shatter Squad, but he does care about the men under his command. More so towards East, who is his daughter.
  • Foil: He's something of a Good Counterpart to Director Church. Both characters lost their families to war, with only one daughter remaining in the end. Both daughters were also subjected to experiments at their behest. Unlike the Director, who neglected Carolina and gave her two AIs just to see what would happen, West gave Phase over to scientists to save her from a terminal illness.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: When he decides to go toe to toe with Diesel, he decides to do it mano-e-mano and through sheer badassery manages to almost win!
  • Ground Punch: When using the Armor Lock ability, he does it the signature way.
  • Nerves of Steel: Doesn't flinch at two Warthogs braking/skidding very close to him or a much bigger adversary picking a fight with him. Especially when said adversary happens to have pretty much helped moped the floor with two Freelancers and an entire base's worth of soldiers.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He had a son and daughter in addition to East, but both of them followed him into the military and predeceased him.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: While not as gifted as One or East, he's an exceptionally skilled fighter in his own right, and the only one who's held his own against Diesel in a straight fight.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: His strategy for dealing with Phase is to not fight back and simply let her vent her issues with him by beating the crap out of him.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: He has to face Phase alone in order to atone for his failures as a father and try to talk some sense into her.

    One

Agent One / Jamie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rvb_agent_one.jpg
Carolina: But not as high as One - headstrong and impulsive, she could be the next leader of Shatter Squad, if she can learn to work on a team.
Voiced By: Fiona Nova
A rather talented, if cocky soldier, and member of Shatter Squad. She is the adopted daughter of Axel.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Girl in her case. She's incredibly skilled to the point where it may not be too much of a stretch to say she is as good as a Freelancer agent. Unfortunately, this also makes her incredibly cocky and flat-out tells Carolina the only reason she joined Shatter Squad was to take down Zero because he was the guy who beat Carolina.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Wears blue armor with a yellow trimnote .
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Her entire family were Alliance of Defense elites that died on a mission.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Hers and the rest of Shatter Squad's fight with Zero ends with them getting the utter crap kicked out of them, fairing no better than Carolina or Wash when they fought him.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: She challenges Carolina, thinking she's just as good if not better than her. While she does put up a good fight with East, neither of them lasts very long against her.
  • Foil: To Carolina. While Carolina was originally professional (and still is, albeit less so after having spent so much time with the Reds and Blues) and was capable of working with her fellow Freelancer agents unless she got worked up, One is more boisterous and is stated to have problems working with others.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite being an Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy, she doesn't take her loss against Carolina very hard and accepts her loss for what it is. Unlike East.
  • I Work Alone: Carolina says she's good enough to potentially lead Shatter Squad, but only if she can learn to work with a team.
  • The Rival: East views her as this, evident by how angry she gets when One and Axel get the lead in their race.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In "Encounter," she, Raymond and East yell at Axel when they learn he and Zero had a history together, along with the fact that he did not join their fight with him, unaware that he arrived to back them up when Zero just finished mopping the floor with them.

    Axel

Agent Axel / Agent Axle / Lance

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rvb_agent_axel_1.jpg
Carolina: First up - Axel. Former class operative, current AOD golden boy and weapons expert. He's got a wife and kid at home, along with a couple of Boy Scout merit badges. That's just my guess.
Voiced By: Jeb Aguilar-Kendrick
Shatter Squad's "golden boy" and weapons expert. He is the adoptive father of Agent One.
  • The Ace: Described as the golden boy and is an expert soldier with little in the way of personality flaws, unlike his teammates.
  • Only Sane Man: Is much more down-to-earth and normal than any of his teammates, mentioning that he looks forward to being able to retire soon.
  • Parental Substitute: Is sort of this to Agent One, having adopted her and raised as his own child when her parents died.
  • Red Is Heroic: His armor is predominantly red and light gray.
  • Scarred Equipment: His helmet's Visor has a few cracks (ala Halo 5 Master Chief), which helps make him look more rugged, experienced and older in comparison to East or One.
  • We Used to Be Friends: "Duo" reveals he was once friends with Zero, before they had a falling out for reasons unknown.

    East

Agent East / Danyell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rvb_agent_east.jpg
Carolina: Speaking of East, if you told me she was an 18-year-old with daddy issues, I'd believe it. She's a rebellious, competitive little punk with a nifty little power that gives her super speed and incredibly high marks.
Voiced By: Jenn K. Tidwell
Rebellious and competitive, East has a rivalry with One and is known for having a "cool superpower”. She is Agent West's daughter.
  • Deep Cover Agent: Turns out to be a Literal Split Personality of Phase, who earnestly played along with Shatter Squad until the best opportunity to complete the defector's mission caused her to finally succumb to Phase's call to rejoin.
  • Foil: In contrast to Agent One, who is seemingly The Ace among the entirety of Shatter Squad (barring more experienced members like West or Axel), East, while competent in her own right, is a skilled soldier in her own right but isn't quite on the same level, needing her Super-Speed to gain an advantage. One also doesn't concern herself with rivalries and takes her loss against Carolina easily, unlike East who considers One The Rival and immediately blames her when they lost their bout against the former Freelancer. One has a good relationship with her adopted father Axel, but East resents West for what he had to do to save her life.
  • Hero Killer: Attempted in SIDEWAYS in which she stabs Tucker right before revealing herself to be Phase's Literal Split Personality. However, it's revealed at the start of the very next episode that Tucker survived.
  • Heroic RRoD: When she uses her Super-Speed, she gets extremely tired out and is otherwise left vulnerable. It's revealed in SIDEWAYS that it's actually a result of her other half, Phase, recalling her to merge back together.
  • Literal Split Personality: She's a hololight clone made from a fragment of Phase's personality. Notably, despite still being aligned against Shatter Squad post-merging, Phase does show some slight unease towards what she did to Tucker and more openly questions Zero's mission.
  • Meaningful Name: "East" is one of the four directions on a map or compass, and is generally in the direction of sunrise. It also probably helps that her father's codename is "West", and it's noted that the two were pulled apart when she was sent to the military.
  • Power at a Price: She can boost her speed to superhuman levels for a brief period, but it tires her out very quickly. It also causes her physical pain as a backlash if overused. Said "overuse" is later revealed to stem from Phase calling her back and East losing the strength to resist, as it culminates in her stabbing and seemingly killing Tucker before having a Split-Personality Merge with Phase.
  • Shout-Out: Word of God stated that the rivalry between One and East was meant to be akin to that of Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. Fittingly, the revelation East is a clone of Phase who undergoes a Split-Personality Merge and displays a desire to kill West for seemingly abandoning her furthers the allusion, as Sasuke betrays the Leaf Village and willingly becomes an ally of Orochimaru so as to gain the power to kill his older brother Itachi after he caused the Uchiha Massacre.
  • Split-Personality Merge: She recombines with Phase into a full person in "SIDEWAYS''. It's more literal than most examples due to her being a Literal Split Personality.
  • Super-Speed: Her cool superpower, which triggers when stressed enough.
  • Tyke Bomb: To save her from a fatal disease, her father gave her to the army, who trained her from a very young age to be a Super-Soldier. Unfortunately, this also caused her to resent him.

    Raymond

Agent Raymond

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rvb_agent_raymond.png
"Oh, my phone's juicing up. It's at 25%. If we could just get it to 30, we could head out."
Carolina: And, Raymond - tech guy would be an understatement. This guy makes Guy Fieri look like an amateur cook with a wacky wardrobe in place of an actual personality. He's also the newest to the team and desperate to fit in.
Voiced By: Noël Wiggins
Shatter Squad's "super cool tech guy" and newest member.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Raymond may be a goofy and inexperienced soldier, but he's more than capable of contributing to the team with his technological expertise.
  • Butt-Monkey: Most of the slapstick humor in the first few episodes comes at his expense, such as him puking into his helmet and having his PC shot (which is right near him) at when he tries to charge his phone with it.
  • Composite Character: He shares traits from both Simmons and Grif, being Shatter Squad's resident tech geek and an orange-colored Butt-Monkey on top of that.
  • Cowardly Lion: He is extremely cowardly and complains about West dragging him into danger, but when the chips are down he has no qualms about shooting Diesel in the face with a rocket launcher.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Despite his goofy antics and being the Butt-Monkey of the group, Raymond is very good with technology. In "Recovery," he uses footage recorded on the VISR helmet cams from the soldiers to find out who attacked the facility and what they're capable of.
    • Though he's not on the same level as the others in Shatter Squad, he does have some level of hand-to-hand combat as shown in "Encounter."
  • I Always Wanted to Say That:
I'm in. ...Aha, I've always wanted to say that.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself for failing to realize East was a hardlight clone and allowing Tucker to get shanked and his sword stolen despite recognizing the signs.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He bluntly calls West a terrible dad and is the most aggressive about demanding answers regarding his relationship with East, but West agrees with the criticism and Raymond is well within his rights to want every scrap of intel he can get given that she just betrayed them.
  • Lovable Coward: Despite his open cowardice and inexperience, he retains a goofy and affable demeanor.
  • New Meat: The first episode introduces him as a new member of Shatter Squad, having been picked up by Axel, One and East before they turned the whole thing into a race.
  • Odd Name Out: Everyone else, be it Shatter Squad or Viper, is referred to by codename, and yet Raymond uses his given name.
  • The Smart Guy: He is Shatter Squad's tech expert, and is very skilled with computers and the like.
  • Stress Vomit: It doesn't happen immediately, but not long after he gets out of the Warthog following East and One's impromptu race, he pukes inside his own helmet.

Other

Note: Carolina and Washington are also part of this group. See here for Carolina and here for Washington.

    Tiny
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tiny_5.png
Voiced By: Brooke Olson
A mechanic.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She has her quirks, but is a very skilled mechanic. For instance, she upgrades a combat vehicle to give it camouflage abilities, but is more interested in how this gives the ability to change the color to match one's mood or music.
  • Ironic Nickname: "Tiny" is huge, towering over everyone else.
  • Mr. Fixit: As Axel says, she has a reputation for being able to fix just about anything. She completely revamps Shatter Squad's Warthogs, giving them camouflage technology.
  • No Sense of Humor: She has trouble recognizing and understanding jokesnote , but laughs at them anyway.
Raymond: You'll like this one. Did you hear about the fire at the circus?
    Tiny: There was a fire?
    Raymond: It was in tents.
    [They both laugh]
Tiny: I love jokes! I hope to get one someday.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Despite her enormous stature, her voice is pretty high-pitched.
  • Wrench Wench: A bubbly female mechanic.
