    Benjamin

Benjamin

Played By: David Neher

Schmidt's college "friend".

  • Abusive Parents: He has a son named Stuart in season 7 and is horribly emotionally abusive to him, forcing him to excel at everything and verbally tearing into him when he messes up, even outright telling Stuart he doesn't love him anymore after not cutting a circle properly. Bear in mind that Stuart is only three.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: When he hits on Jess at Schmidt's party. He refuses to back down after she rejects him.
  • Birds of a Feather: In a season 5 episode, he's dating a bitchy girl who is a female version of him.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's pretty much Schmidt (specifically, season 1 Schmidt) but without his Hidden Heart of Gold and endearing traits.
  • Facial Horror: He gets a pair of scissors jammed into the side of his face in his last appearance and the resulting plastic surgery leaves him with a permanent grin on his face according to Schmidt.
  • Hate Sink: He's an absolutely horrid person with no redeeming traits of any kind.
  • Jerkass: A rude and obnoxious jerk.
  • Only One Name: His last name is unknown.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Other than being insanely sexist, he's also racist.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He's so full of himself that he makes Schmidt look humble.
  • Smug Smiler: Always has a shit eating grin of self-satisfaction on his face. Rather fittingly, it even ends up being his default expression after the above mentioned scissors incident.
  • With Friends Like These...: Schmidt refers to their relationship as kind of like a girl's friendship, where they're friends but they hate each other.

    Kim

Kim

Played By: Gillian Vigman

Schmidt's boss.

    Dirk

Dirk

Played By: Martin Starr

A perpetual student and a friend of Nick's from law school.

  • Age-Gap Romance: Invoked Trope. He goes for college girls rather than women his age because they're easier to attract.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's very strange and sleazy, but well-educated.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He hits on Jess and Cece to no avail. Later elaborated upon when he reveals he goes for gullible college girls instead, as they're easier, leading Nick to do the same for a while.
  • Inappropriate Role Model: Nick thinks he's the smartest guy he knows.

    Nadia

Nadia

Played By: Rebecca Reid

Cece's fellow model.

  • Brainless Beauty: As a model, she's very pretty. Not very smart.
  • Brutal Honesty: Doesn't really censor herself. At all.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She's... an odd duck. When Shavrang is going to show Cece his penis, she gets into a fighting pose and says "if it runs I catch it!" Earlier, she's flipping through a magazine, and then points to it and goes "that's ME!" when no one was around.
  • The Exile: Jess says she's been kicked out of Russia.
  • Funny Foreigner: Her list of things she likes about America include "ice skating for fun, not to save life."
  • Groin Attack: An accidental, but major one: she breaks Schmidt's penis during sex. He swears that there's a right angle in there somewhere.
  • Innocent Bigot: Invariably calls Schmidt "Jew" but doesn't seem to mean anything by it.
  • Jerkass: Thought Schmidt's injury was funny, makes Jess sing the Russian monkey song over and over again, and overall doesn't really show much empathy.
  • Really Gets Around: When Schmidt is about to go on a date with her, Cece comments that not even she knows where she's been. In season four she's pregnant. She doesn't know who the father is, calling it her "magic sex party surprise".
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!: The only reason she gets away with some of the things she says is because she's beautiful. Lampshaded by Schmidt after she says something offensive.

    Sadie

Sadie

Played By: June Diane Raphael

A gynecologist, friend of Jess and Cece, married to Melissa. Recurring in seasons 1—3.

  • All Lesbians Want Kids: Downplayed. Sadie and Melissa are happily married but there is never any mention of them wanting kids. By her second appearance in "Eggs" she announces that she's pregnant, and in her appearance in "Bachelorette Party" she's 39 weeks pregnant.
  • All Women Are Lustful: When she attends Cece's bachelorette party, at which most of the guests are gorgeous models, she gets...flustered.
Sadie: One more thing? I am a doctor, if anyone's got any areas they want looked at. I'm fine to take a peek.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns for a cameo in the last episode.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She is usually this, partly on account of being played by June Diane Raphael.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: When Schmidt consults her to see if he's good at arousing women, and describes with a hurricane of Unusual Euphemism his technique, despite being extremely gay, she becomes so aroused that she has to tell him to leave the office. The pregnancy hormones may have had something to do with it.

    Tran

Tran

Played By: Ralph Ahn

Nick's old and silent friend.

  • Ambiguously Brown: He's obviously Asian, but no one seems to have any idea what country he's from.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Nick considers Tran his best friend, but according to Tran's granddaughter Kai, it's not mutual.
  • Magical Asian: Parodied. Manages to solve Nick's problems just by being there and listening to Nick without saying a word, but Nick always winds up feeling better afterward.
  • Only One Name: His full name is unknown.
  • Parental Substitute: Part of the reason Nick like Tran so much is that he'll listen to Nick. Nick showing off to Tran "look how high I can jump!" is evocative of a child showing off for his dad.
  • The Quiet One: Has one line thus far: "You are a huge baby."
  • Shipper on Deck: His expression when Nick meets his granddaughter indicates that them meeting was his plan all along.
  • The Silent Bob: Nick reacts to Tran like he's saying things, even though Tran is dead silent.

    Outside Dave

Outside Dave

Played By: Steve Agee

A homeless man who who lives outside of the apartment building.

    Principal Foster

Principal Alan Foster

Played By: Curtis Armstrong

Jess's principal at Coolidge Middle School.

  • Apathetic Teacher:
[Jess is in Foster's office when some kids appear at the open door]
Kid: There's a fight in the gym!
    Jess: Oh my god!
    Foster: I got this, Jess.
    Kids: FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
[Foster runs over to the door, shuts it, and goes back to his desk.]
Foster: I've been thinking about starting to wear a watch again.
  • Back for the Finale: Returns for a cameo in the last episode.
  • Has a Type: He's not attracted to Jess because he prefers Asian women.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his obnoxiousness, there are moments where he's nicer to Jess, like in her Birthday Episode.
  • Last-Name Basis: Even after he retires, he's still referred to as Principal Foster.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: He's selfish, incompetent, and sexist.
  • Recurring Character: From season 2 onwards. He still appears occasionally even after he retires.

    Leslie

Leslie Nelson

Played By: Ayden Mayeri

Aly's sister.
