Vlandia's Banner
Vlandia is a realm of warriors who came to Calradia and then settled down, the Vlandians have created a society built around their military elite - knights - who ride forth to fight enemies of the realm as the peasants labor in the fields suffering the most of this feudal society. It's the predecessor of both the Kingdom of Swadia and the Kingdom of Rhodoks.

  • Animal Motifs: Lions.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: Was supposed to be an ally of the Empire during the Battle of Pendraic, but fought alongside the Sturgians and Battanians instead. note
    • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: At least from the Vlandian point of view due to Neretzes' ambassador insulting them.
    • The Oath-Breaker: And the imperials are furious to this day that Vlandians broke their oaths by switching sides.
  • Color Motifs: Red and gold. Their banner is a golden lion wielding a spear on a red field.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of the Normans in terms of aesthetic and general backstory, but also of the Ostrogothic Kingdom seeing as how they took over the western portion of the Empire and established their own kingdom there.
  • Knights In Shining Armor: Vlandia's whole culture revolves around their elite knights, emphasized by their specialization in cavalry and heavy troops.
  • Medieval European Fantasy: More or less the traditional historical fantasy Europe, though trending towards the Early Medieval Period rather than the High Middle Ages that Swadia embodied more.

Clans

dey Meroc

The ruling clan of Vlandia led by King Derthert.

    Derthert

Derthert

The pacifistic and rational king of Vlandia and the leader of the dey Meroc clan, Derthert is widely regarded by his people as a good and decent man. However, he is also considered to be a weak king who finds himself forced to make decisions because of the demands of his vassals, and his exhaustion with war has left many in the kingdom desiring a more virile king.
  • Authority in Name Only: Despite being the ruler of Vlandia, Derthert holds little sway over his vassals. Before the Battle of Pendraic, Derthert wanted to honor his oath to the Empire, but the barons refused his demand and made him go to war with it instead. During the battle itself, Derthert had a plan to minimize casualties as much as possible, but his barons ignored him and ultimately incurred heavy Vlandian losses.
  • Call-Forward: One of Derthert's quotes refers to the politics of Warband, as the two kingdoms that descend from Vlandia are simultaneously at war with each other and suffering from significant internal problems with disloyal vassals exactly as he predicted they would be.
My son will rule, and he will fight his brothers and vassals. And after him my grandchildren will fight each other. At least, as kings and princes, they can enjoy a dry tent, good wine, and a soft bed between dusk and dawn. That is all the peace one gets in life.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: For Derthert, war will always be a constant fact of life and peace will never be achieved, thousands of innocents will suffer, but continues to fight and hold whatever of his kingdom he can.
If you toss a bone into a pack of wild dogs, what does having that bone mean? It means that you get bitten a lot. I have spent most of my life in the saddle or sitting in front of a besieged fortress. Once I thought, 'I suffer, but at least my son will rule in peace.' Such lies we tell ourselves. There will never be peace.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Derthert spends most of his time trying to keep his realm together and bring peace and stability for Vlandia and the lives of the common people. Unfortunately, he is not liked by his vassals who want a more "virile" king.
