The Southern Empire's Banner
Representing the Southern Empire and an abandonment of the traditional Imperial claim that they are not a monarchy, Empress Rhagaea, who rules the southern chunk of the Empire, represents a group that the only true end to the endless civil wars that have caused the Empire's decline must be ended at any cost, even if that is a king or queen.

Clans

Pethros

The ruling clan of the Southern Empire led by Empress Rhagaea. It directly rules the cities of Lycaron and Onira and the castles of Sestadaim and Chanopsis at game start.

  • Nepotism: A common accusation about the Southern Empire's goals, starting with their rivals holding that Rhagaea has no claim to begin with (being the widow of an elected emperor), reinforced by the fact that the end game for those backing her is to enact hereditary succession. Lucon is opposed to this as breaking with de jure tradition going on centuriesnote , while Garios' faction would prefer the military to decide who is to be Emperor rather than leave it to the whims of inheritance.
  • Feminine Mother, Tomboyish Daughter: Rhagaea has shoulder length hair, wears a fancy dress as her default oufit, and lacks any skills dealing with weaponry, with Charm as her highest skill. Ira, meanwhile, has cropped hair, wears armor even in her civilian outfit, fights in the arena, and has not one but four weapon skills that are 150 or higher, but lacks any of the Social skills.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: On the meta level, this is a common accusation of Rhagaea's claim and is the source of the "Simperial" meme within the playerbase as if they succeed Rhagaea and then Ira would both be Empress.

    Rhagaea

Rhagaea

"I loved him before as a man, but that day learned to love him as something more: what a gift he was to the people of Calradia!"
"Every man wishes to leave what he has to his children, be it a tiny patch of land or the imperial throne. Everyone in Calradia, rich or poor, grasps this. The universal principle of inheritance, not the obscure laws of the Senate, is what makes an Emperor in the eyes of the people."
Formerly wife of Emperor Arenicos, Rhagaea laid a claim to the throne of the Calradic Empire for the sake of securing it for her daughter after her husband's death (or more likely murder). Despite being technically an outsider to the Empire and facing a general loved by his troops and the Senate's favored choice, Rhagaea was nonetheless able to pull a third of the Empire to her banner as the civil war began.
  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: She's 42, yet looks even younger than her tomboyish daughter.
  • Action Girl: While not as pronounced in her story as her daughter, Rhagaea still leads armies wearing the full panoply of war.
  • Arranged Marriage: How she married Arenicos - though her side of the family is not present.note
  • Brainy Brunette: A brunette, and who Neretzes's old spymaster describes as "the cleverest" out of all the three Imperial claimants.
  • The Emperor: Acting as one for Ira, even though Ira is already of age. The latter seems to be okay with it, though.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Besides the standard army leadership typical of Calradian lords, according to Istanianote , Rhagaea is by far the cleverest of the three claimants and most able in governing.

    Ira

Ira

The only child of the late Emperor Arenicos and his widow, the Southern empress Rhagaea. Before his death, Emperor Arenicos had been grooming her as his heir apparent despite the fact that she was a wild child who happily spent time in taverns and even fighting as a gladiator - and all the scandal that entails for a woman of her station. With her father's death and her mother claiming the title Empress, Ira currently leads armies in the field just like her mother does to fight for her birthright.
  • Action Girl: Probably the most pronounced example in Bannerlord's story so far, given her backstory.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite the fact that she is nominally supposed to be the successor, when Rhagaea dies Ira does not automatically succeed her as the game has agnaticnote  preference and there are other members of the Pethros family present.
  • Heir Club for Men: Discusses this if you ask her about politics - she believes if she were a man the Senate would have gladly voted for her as many Calradic Emperors were a of the previous monarch that the Senate then accepted and the army acclaimed. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned Gameplay and Story Segregation one of her cousins is going to get the throne if Rhagaea dies.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ira", Latin for "Wrath."
  • Mother Makes You King: Or Empress, in this case. While it is Ira's claim that provides the Southern Empire legitimacy, much of the plotting seems to have been done by her mother.
  • Politically-Active Princess: While the clan mechanics means that Rhagaea is the Pethros clan's main face during Kingdom Decisions, Ira is not sitting in a palace waiting for her turn to the throne - she is actively fighting for it.

Leonipardes

One of the clans of the Southern Empire. They rule the city of Poros at game start.

    Pharon

Pharon

An archon of the Southern Empire and head of Clan Leonipardes at game start.
  • Democracy Is Bad: The crux of his political views. If asked about politics, he'll bring up his benevolence for the peasantry ... but also says he wouldn't trust a farmer for advice on ruling. His encyclopedia entry also declares that he ignores his senatorial duties and sees hereditary rule as the natural order.
  • The Good King: Well, Good Archon, but this is how he sees and presents himself, as a benevolent ruler who cares deeply for his subjects.

Mestricaros

One of the clans of the Southern Empire. They rule the city of Danustica and the castles of Lavenia and Odrysa at game start.
