Plains

  • Hoist by His Own Petard: As pointed out by MagicGum, one of the reasons why they might have lost their battle with the snow state was because they decided to come down from their high ground first to attack, when they could have just defended Hannibal's peak instead and force Snow to come to them first and gain the Home Field Advantage.
  • Slave Race: Being the only region to have Villagers, they promptly made the most of it by enslaving all of them to help make and improve their gear.
  • The Rival: With the Mesa, as they were the two most powerful factions (or so it seemed) on the server after the trade nodes were cleared.
  • The Worf Effect: If you have seen Spoke's Civilization Experiments before, then you'd know that some of their players are some of the toughest and most powerful PvPers in the world, most notably Clownpierce. This is especially true once they merged with Ocean. This makes it all the more shocking when the Ice Spikes manage to actually defeat them and their army, killing all of the people who appeared in Spoke's event in the process, including Clownpierce.

Ice Spikes/"Siberia"

  • Band of Brothers: After having to survive the hostile conditions of the Ice Spikes biome, the members of "Siberia" grew very close to each other, collaborating well on building up their settlement, mining for resources, preparing defenses, sharing resources, and fighting their enemies as a united team.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: This civilization began as a bunch of players trying desperately to find food and shelter in the snow and ice, only slowly getting the resources needed to develop their civilization. However, once their civilization was able to successfully do so, they proved incredibly coordinated, quickly building up their main base and amassing an Elite Army. Once the trade routes opened, they proved themselves even stronger than expected, successfully killing the Ice Archers with zero casualties, and successfully taking down the entire plains team, including strong PvPers like Clownpierce and the members of the Watchers from Spoke's events, dominating the event and becoming the main threat on the server, eventually winning out against the Mesa despite the Mesa having captured the beacon first.
  • Grim Up North: Due to living in an ice biome, there were few plants to farm or trees to cut down for wood, causing them to primarily focus on fishing and mining to stay alive. They also grew incredibly skilled at PvP being powerful enough to defeat Clown Pierce and his army with minimal casualties, and easily sweeping aside the Mesa when they tried to retrieve the beacon.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: Invoked by their admin Mayyye, who named the nation "Siberia" after their cold and harsh environment. Indeed, the environment made the people living there very tough and communal, and they would also continue the great Russian tradition of defeating all other nations with their strength of arms and Home Field Advantage.
  • The Worf Effect: Prove themselves to be a major threat when they destroy the entire plains/ocean army, killing all of their leaders (including Clown Pierce !) despite the other team having a number of proven PvPers on them.

Ocean

  • Deserted Island: The main setting for the Ocean faction, it featured a large beach covering the island, palm trees, a Lava Pit with some treasure hidden nearby, and abundant mineral resources.
  • Divided We Fall: After the death of their original leader, the remaining members started fighting each other, such as over gear, over crimes, or over random murders. One player got exiled, while most of the others were killed, with only 2 players surviving, one of whom wasn't even in the Ocean to begin with.
  • Failed State: Pretty much completely collapses after the death of their original leader, mostly due to infighting between criminals and vigilantes annihilating the population, leaving only 3 surviving members, one of whom was exiled to Australia and another who wasn't even in the Ocean to begin with.
  • Landslide Election: Played for Laughs. Due to the election happening after all but two of the players were either killed or exiled off of the island, the two players decided to set things straight by unanimously electing one of them as leader, ending the civil war with the Ocean completely destroyed.
  • Robinsonade: The general theming of the Ocean civilization, being a group of players attempting to survive on a Deserted Island in the middle of a vast sea, attempting to survive both the lack of living space and the lack of crops and plants. Turns out, they failed due to not cooperating with each other very well, causing the state to collapse and almost all of its population to die.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Introduced to showcase the general idea of surviving in unfamiliar lands with limited resources, illustrating the basic idea of how to build up a civilization. Magic promptly showcases their rapid demise to infighting to illustrate how not to run a civilization, as well as how people are the most important factor in determining whether one survives or not.

Mesa

  • Eagleland: The Mesa's culture was primarily based on the concept of Americans going gold mining in the vast frontier deserts, and so were referred to with a lot of American concepts, like "spreading freedom" and conducting imperialism.
  • Thirsty Desert: The Mesa was not a nice place to live in, as the main source of wood was existing structures and dead bushes, while the main source of food was fishing, since plants were scarce and animals even scarcer. However, the desert offered tons of easily accessible ore deposits via an abandoned mine, allowing for the people to quickly arm themselves to invade elsewhere.
  • Out of Focus: While the Mesa were important players in world politics, due to not being the primary threat to the world order at any point in the story, they got much less screentime than the other two factions that rivaled them in power, the Snow and Plains, and got much less plot relevance, mostly serving to be one last Rival to the Ice Spikes before being soundly defeated.

Jungle

  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Invoked by MagicGum when he realizes that the Jungle's communal chest system was starting to look an awful lot like communism.
  • Hungry Jungle: The Jungle was depicted as such, from its normal Minecraft qualities of having dense foliage blocking light, allowing for hostile mobs to spawn wherever torches aren't placed, or the lack of passive mobs for easy food, or even a group of hostile Tree Warriors who would ambush any hapless traveler trying to pass into or out of it; the jungle was a hard place to live in, exemplified when the entire Jungle civilization were killed by the aforementioned Tree Warriors.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Their death to the tree warriors during their attempt to cross their trade route signified how dangerous the trade guardians really were, making all other factions much more cautious when passing their trade routes.

Plains

  • The Alliance: Formed one with the Desert in order to destroy the Snow people for threatening the rest of the civilizations. After killing the snow king, however, Snow managed to convince them to help attack the Mountain instead.

Desert

Snow

  • Grim Up North: Due to the harsh climate, pretty much all of the Snow's civilian population died off early in the event, leaving them with only their warriors. Thus, they resorted to allying with the vikings that guarded each of their trade routes, allowing them to become a powerful army despite not having that many people left. This immediately made the other civilizations wary of them, leading to conflict with all of them. However, after clearing up their misconceptions(and utterly annihilating the swamp), the Snow led a massive coalition to finish off the Mountain people, cementing themselves as the preeminent military power on the server.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Likely due to having most of its civilian population killed, the Snow state refused to send diplomats to communicate with the other civilizations about their intentions, namely their plans to attack the mountain civilization. They only ever communicated in person, meaning that the only civilization they had major talks with were the Vikings living in their trade routes. This would bite them in the butt hard as, when they formalized their alliance with the Vikings, those who opposed fled and warned all of the other civilizations about their alliance, insinuating that they were about to conquer everyone instead of just the Mountain. As a result, the Snow state met a cold reception from all they met, destroying the Swamp when they attacked them in preemptive self-defense and being utterly ambushed by the combined Desert and Plains army after trying to go talk with them. Fortunately, the survivors of that battle managed to successfully conduct audience with the Plains and Desert themselves, peacefully resolving the conflict and misconceptions and allowing Snow to go ahead with their plans to invade the mountains.

Swamp/Republic of Alchembrew

  • Meaningful Name: Their self christened name, The Republic of Alchembrew, refers to them being the only place with the resources to brew potions.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Them dying due to the Snow mistakenly attacking them helps cause anti-snow sentiment to rise massively and illustrated how ruthless the Snow civilization could be if pressed.
  • Tragic Mistake: Attacking the Snow state when they tried approaching them for safe passage to the mountains. Due to hearing all the news about the Snow being bloodthirsty warmongers from the Vikings that fled to them, they thought that the approaching Snow army was planning on attacking them instead, causing them to fire back in perceived self-defense. This then caused Snow to attack them for real this time, leading to their state being utterly annihilated.

Mountain

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When the Snow people finally marched to attack the mountain, they were joined by the forces of the Plains and desert together, seriously outnumbering the mountain's forces. This resulted in the Mountain being completely outmatched, being rapidly pushed from their walls and killed, with even people like ClownPierce dying to the onslaught. The only survivors were those who made their way to the vertical mineshaft the mountain built earlier, with all other killed in the process.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Their demise at the hands of the combined Snow, Desert, and Plains alliance showcased how, no matter how skilled or how prepared you are, not doing enough diplomacy can really hurt your chances of surviving such an event.

Australia

The Outback

The Upside-Downers

The Assassin's Guild

Brazil

  • The Empire: The few times we see it in action, it's busy in the act of Rape, Pillage, and Burning other civilizations in the name of conquest
  • Out of Focus: We barely get insights into what this civilization is on the ground. All Magic chooses to reveal to us are its enmity with the Amazon, and destroying the Assassins' Guild's leadership as a result.

Europe

  • United Europe: Due to being settled by many related colonies, Europe quickly became a united entity and great power, being the primary antagonist against Eggcat and his empire.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Their first leader, CommonHat, in an attempt to unify Europe even further to defend themselves against _eggcat, attempted to consolidate rule under an emperorship, even quoting Emperor Palpatine's New Era Speech directly. This did not last, however, as one of _eggcat's spies managed to assassinate him shortly thereafter.

Britain

Trost Sanctuary

  • Actual Pacifist: Most of the people who founded the sanctuary were pacifists and people who did not want to participate in wars, such as the Eggcat war. As a result, they were an easy target for a rogue band of Australian mercenaries looking for loot. However, instead of changing thier pacifist ways, they instead fled into space to escape the danger on the surface.
  • Badass Pacifist: Despite not wanting to fight back against invaders at all, the Trost Sanctuary decided to resolve this problem by building rockets to space to avoid any conflicts happening on the ground. In doing so, they were the first nation to use advanced redstone technology, and were the first to build redstone spacecraft. They then used their redstone spacecraft to build an entire artificial moon as a Space Station, finally giving them the safe haven they so desperately needed, and would continue teaching the art of redstone rocketry to the entire world for ages to come.
  • Cool Spaceship: The first nation to build these in the event, they used them to escape from the surface of the planet to avoid any further conflict and bloodshed than they wanted, building an entire moon as a space station for them to live on while the earth was in conflict.
  • Space Station: They owned one that was an entire miniature moon, using it as a platform to which they could escape the perpetual conflict on the surface from. Unfortunately, this didn't stop it from getting nuked when the world ended.
  • Suicidal Pacifism: As a result of their population mostly being composed of a combination of Actual Pacifists and civilians who didn't have much fighting skills, they were completely unprepared for the arrival of Australian mercenaries, who promptly took the opportunity to murder several of their members for gear. Instead of building an army to fight back, however, they chose to build Cool Spaceships and fly into space to escape conflict instead.
  • War Refugees: The sanctuary was founded by people who wanted to escape the chaos of the Eggcat war.

Oddimur

  • The Most Wanted: After committing a spate of high profile terrorist attacks on multiple public gatherings, multiple nations posted high profile bounties on his head, singling him out as one of the world's most wanted criminals. Ultimately, he would avoid detection by the law by giving up his bombing lifestyle, settling down on a remote island, never to be seen again by society at large.
  • Terrorist Without A Cause: Gave and given no reason for committing a spree of terrorists incidents, like assassinating world leaders at a peace conference and blowing up the Arctic's wall.

Peacekeepers

Russia

China

  • Back from the Brink: Was reduced to one settlement hiding out on the island of Taiwan due to Russia's brutal attack on their original settlement. This led the newcomer "better" Chinese to surpass them in population and settlements afterwards. However, they bounced back from this massive disadvantage, holding off the "better" Chinese from capturing Taiwan and then capturing all of "Better" China's settlements in return. Following this, they would continue to hold out against the Russians until they managed to launch a massive invasion of the entire world, proving that they had succeeded in surviving their bad starting situation.
  • Badass Army: After the Russian attack on their original settlement, the Chinese started massively focusing on gearing up and preparing their military to defend from further attacks. This army proved themselves when they fended off an attack by "Better" China on Taiwan despite the "Better" Chinese getting the drop on them, and proved themselves again when they successfully captured all of "Better" China's settlements with minimal casualties. After securing their homeland and receiving the support and loyalty of the former "Better" Chinese, they grew even stronger, fending off at least one (and probably multiple) attacks by Russia at the great wall, then going on the offensive and Doing Onto Others Before They Do Unto Us the same things the Russians have been doing, namely Rape, Pillage, and Burn.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: A heroic variation. After receiving _eggcat following his escape from the siege on his capital, spoiler: the leader of China , realizing how much of the world that he had to face if the war were to continue, personally executed him out in the forests of China in order to ensure world peace.
  • Government in Exile: After the Russians attacked and pillaged their original town, the Chinese were forced to flee to Taiwan and join the group already living there in order to prepare to retake their homeland.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After the Chinese fend off another Russian attack at the Great Wall, they decided to embark on a campaign to conquer and pacify the kingdoms to the west, invading and pillaging the Himalayan Warrior base, Carthage, Europe, Greenland, and Russia, over trying to Never Be Hurt Again.

"Better" China

  • The Rival: Became one to the normal China based out of Taiwan when they named themselves "Better" China, causing them to fight a war over which civilization gets to keep the China name.

Arctic/Greenland

  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Became one due to being forced to defend themselves against Russian aggression, which including things such as appointing a leader via Duel to the Death, and arranging assassination attempts against unpopular rulers.
  • Grim Up North: Lived in the far north of the map, which, as MagicGum notes, was "50% Ice." As a result, they had not many crops to grow and not much soil to grow them on. They were usually impoverished and struggled to keep their civilization alive and well, not helped by the attacks of the Russians or the attempts by Canada to extend their dominion over them.

Canada

  • Hegemonic Empire: Tried to expand its dominion by making the Arctic into its subject. This didn't work.

North Star

  • Sacrificial Lamb: Despite building up an early settlement at the seeming expense of _eggcat and his desires to join them, they proved nothing more than an easy target to steamroll by the forces of _eggcat looking for conquest and revenge. Such a promising nation dying in such a manner both helps to highlight how important public relations are to state survival, as well as showcasing to the other civilizations how dangerous _eggcat could be if pressed, leading to the _Eggcat war.

eggcat's Empire

  • Arc Villain: The primary threat to the world during his era.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: You remember that guy who was rejected from North Star? You know how he's _eggcat, the leader of the plains from the last event? Well, he would indeed come back, stronger than ever before, destroying North Star, and becoming the main threat to world peace.

America

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: After TheMustachedMan received a war declaration from Mexico and the Amazon shortly after the counterattack against the British, he decided that, if America wasn't able to be free, then America was to be dead. To do this, he nuked his own capital, with him still in it, to deny America to his enemies, kickstarting the end of the world.
  • Eagleland: Very strongly modeled itself after the US of A, what with a strong gold mining industry, a McDonald's, a copy of Mt. Rushmore, and a culture centered around Freedom. Not quite sure what kind of Eagleland they are though.

The Amazon

  • Out of Focus: Despite being involved in the plot heavily, the Amazon never get focused on in any specific fashion, with the only times MagicGum features them being to either illustrate a fact about civilization, or setting up conflicts for other civilizations and entities to resolve.

Mexico

  • Unknown Rival: Despite them considering America to be such a priority to take care of that they conspired to lure their leader into a trap just to destabilize them, America didn't really notice their rivalry very much, as seen by how they ignored the bait to go into the trap, namely the allegation that Mexico was usurped by a tyrant. They would promptly get to realize how much Mexico exactly hated them when they declared war during Britain's invasion.

The Persian Sultanate

  • Archenemy: The European Peacekeepers who were the primary old-civilization faction to attack them, almost destroying all of their civilization in the process before being driven back with heavy casualties.
  • The Federation: Formed out of a group of newly formed civilizations full of new players who realized that, in order to survive the onslaught of the older civilizations, they would have to band together, combining their resources and populations to form one empire. These were the Babylonians, Indians, and the Himalayan Warriors.
  • Citadel City: The mountain base owned by the Himalayan Warriors.
