    Cindy

Cindy Chandler

"Ladies and gentleman, the pilot has switched on the "fasten seatbelt" sign."
Played By: Kimberly Joseph

Jack: What are you doing here — with them? I thought you were taken — you were — you were captured.

An Australian Oceanic Airlines stewardess dating the Flight 815 passenger Gary Troup and is the only crew member other than Seth Norris to survive the crash. She crashes with the tail-section survivors and is taken by the Others during the journey to the fuselage survivors' camp. Cindy lives comfortably with the Others following her abduction firstly at the Hydra station then at the Temple, caring for Zach and Emma. To avoid death, she aligns with the Man in Black following the temple massacre. She survives Widmore's mortar attack and survives the series to live under Hurley's guard.

  • Failed a Spot Check: Cindy doesn't manage to notice that Goodwin wasn't on the plane, and managed to miss that Michael, Jin, Sawyer, and Nathan all were.
  • Going Native: After being kidnapped by the Others, she undergoes some kind of off-screen "conversion" and becomes an enthusiastic Other herself. It's never explained just how this happened or how much free will she has left, but it is at least clear that she doesn't blindly follow the Others; after learning Jacob is dead, she leaves the temple for the sake of Zach and Emma.
  • Informed Ability: Cindy claims to have a great memory for passengers; she not only fails to remember that Nathan was on the plane, she doesn't notice that Goodwin wasn't, and a good deal of trouble for Michael, Jin, and Sawyer at the start of Season 2 would have been avoided if she'd recognised them from the flight.
  • Parental Substitute: She becomes Zach and Emma's caretaker, and after joining the Others is always seen in their company.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: First when she joins the Man in Black to avoid her and the kids being killed, and secondly after Widmore attacks them.
  • Sexy Stewardess: She doesn't wear anything revealing and she isn't Ms. Fanservice, but she is very attractive and lightly flirts with Jack.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She disappears after the attack on the beach. It's never revealed whether she survived or not in the series, but Word of God via the Lost Encyclopedia is that she survived along with Zach and Emma.

    Seth Norris

Seth Norris

"They're looking for us in the wrong place."
Played By: Greg Grunberg

"Six hours in, our radio went out. No-one could see us. We turned back to land in Fiji. By the time we hit turbulence, we … we were a thousand miles off course."

The pilot of Oceanic Flight 815 found in the cockpit by Jack, Kate, and Charlie.

Middle-Section Passengers

    Aaron

Aaron Littleton/Austen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/littleton_aaron_4426.jpg
Played By: William Blanchette

The son of Claire Littleton and her former boyfriend Thomas. Aaron is born on the island and leaves it, then being raised by Kate with the public perceiving the baby to be hers, to follow along with their almost entirely false version of what happened on the Island.

  • Affectionate Nickname: After he is born, Charlie takes to calling the unnamed baby "Turniphead", much to Claire's annoyance. Even after Aaron gets his name, Charlie keeps using the nickname form time to time.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Aaron is born on the same night and at more or less the same time that Boone dies.
  • Improbable Infant Survival: He survives the entire series.
  • Last-Minute Baby Naming: Claire doesn't name him until a few episodes after his birth. A justified example as Claire was planning to give him up for adoption and wouldn't have been thinking about names.
  • Satellite Character: He's only really important in relation to Claire, Charlie, and Kate. Justified, as Aaron is a newborn baby pre-Time Skip and only three years old after it, so he doesn't have much of a personality of his own.

    Vincent

Vincent

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vincentthedog_2523.jpg
Played By: Madison & Pono (dogs)

Walt's yellow Labrador retriever, who is originally owned by Walt's stepfather, Brian Porter. He is left behind on the Island when Michael and Walt leave. He is given to Shannon by Walt and remains under her care until she is killed. He is later seen accompanying Sun. After the timeshifts and an attack on the survivors, Vincent ends up with Rose and Bernard in 1974. All three make a new home in the jungle and are found three years later by Sawyer, Juliet and Kate. Vincent is last seen at Jack's side as Jack dies of his wounds.

  • Ambiguous Situation: In the mobisode "So it Begins", Vincent encounters Christian Shephard, who tells him to go find his son because he has work to do; the next scene is the opening scene of the pilot, in which Vincent locates Jack just after he awakes. Since it's not clear which version of Christian he encountered (Man in Black or genuine spirit), it's not clear if he genuinely understood what Christian wanted or happened upon Jack by accident.
  • Back for the Finale: Beautifully mirrors the Pilot's opening scenes. On the day of the crash, Vincent woke Jack up in the bamboo grove. Three years later, he laid down next to Jack as he died in the exact same spot.
  • Book Ends: One of the first things Jack sees on the Island is Vincent running through the jungle. One of the last things he sees on the Island and in his life is Vincent coming out of the jungle to lie next to him as he passes away.
  • Canine Companion: To Walt, Shannon, Rose, Bernard and briefly for Jack. He was also frequently looked after by various other survivors.
  • Living Macguffin: Vincent running off into the jungle and forcing other survivors to look for him is used to put the survivors in the jungle for plot reasons on six different occasions.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: As a dog, it's hard for him to have an impact on the show's plot, but he still does - he's the one who finds Desmond in the well and brings Rose and Bernard to him, saving Desmond's life and leading the Man in Black to them.
  • Stay with Me Until I Die: In a mirror of the show's opening scene, as Jack is dying from his stab wound, Vincent comes out of the brush and lays by his side until he closes his eyes.
  • Team Pet: Of the survivors.

    Edward Mars

Edward Mars

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Edward_Mars_8857.jpg
"Long time no see, Austen."
Played By: Fredric Lehne

"If you can really stay put? Really settle down? Then I'll stop chasing you. But you and I both know that's not gonna happen."

A U.S. marshal who is obsessed with capturing Kate, finally apprehending her in Australia. He is critically injured during the crash and subsequently euthanized by Jack.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: He was a Hero Antagonist at worse, but still an adversary to Kate who had a tendency toward being needlessly smug and even sadistic. However, he wasn't a bad man, and his death is so horrific that it's impossible not to feel sorry for him. Plus, his nastier qualities were only explored after his death.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mars apprehends Kate, an amateur criminal who should be an easy catch, but a horse appears causing his car to crash and her to escape. He subsequently spends years on an obsessive hunt for her across the world, only to be foiled, humiliated or physically hurt at every turn. Then he finally, finally, catches her... only for the plane they're on to crash on an island of horrors. He's mortally wounded in the crash, Kate once again escapes capture and he spends the next few hours slowly dying in abject agony. Oh, and the first attempt to euthanize him was botched, putting him in even more pain to the point where Jack (who never lets a patient go) is forced to Mercy Kill him. To make things worse, nobody knew they were on an island with magical healing abilities, so there was a chance he could have survived if Jack had known that and adjusted his treatment. Edward Mars did not have good luck.
  • Character Death: After sustaining mortal wounds in the crash, and further mortal wounds from Sawyer, Jack ends up euthanizing him.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Mars did survive the crash of Flight 815, but he was seriously wounded and spent the first few days after the crash in and out of consciousness, with his conscious moments being agonizing. Making matters worse, when Sawyer tries to put him out of his misery, he botches it, shooting Mars in the lung and causing him to start drowning in his own blood before Jack finally ends Mars' suffering.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He does have some rather dry, sarcastic moments.
    Kate: I have to go.
    Mars: Hold it.
    Kate: I can't.
Mars: [Dryly] Sure you can, kiddo, I believe in you.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He accepts his death pretty well, calmly asking how they'll do it.
  • Face–Heel Turn: There's not exactly a turn but he gets cast into the heel role following Kate's Heel–Face Turn.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's just doing his job, even if he is a jerk about it.
  • Heart in the Wrong Place: Sawyer tries to euthanize Mars by shooting him in the heart, only to miss, hit his lung, and horribly prolong the poor man's suffering, forcing Jack to finish the job.
  • Hero Antagonist: Mars is technically just doing his job, even if he's smug about it.
  • Inspector Javert: He's on the side of the law, but he's obsessed with catching Kate.
  • Irony: Mars dies before the survivors learn about the Island's healing properties; if they had known about them from the beginning and Jack had adjusted his treatment accordingly, he may have actually survived.
  • Jerkass: He's not exactly a bad person, but he can be rather unpleasant. He's abrasive and goes out of his way to humiliate Kate at times, shamelessly gloating after he finally catches her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As much of a dick as he may be (and even that is partly justified; Kate made Mars' life a misery for three years), Mars is ultimately proven right that Kate can't and won't settle down (it takes the experience of the Island and the need to look after Aaron before she manages to stay in one place), and he's chasing her for a perfectly valid reason; as awful as Wayne may have been, Kate murdered him in cold blood, and she actively ran from justice.
  • Kick the Dog: Reminding Kate of her culpability in her childhood friend Tom's death was uncalled for; it even provokes Kate, who had been doing her best to ignore Mars, to violently attack him.
  • Mercy Kill: Attempted and botched by Sawyer, and then succeeded by Jack.
  • Smug Snake: Although he is a 'good' version.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: Mars brought five extra guns with him to transport Kate, considering her dangerous enough to justify the extra firepower.
  • U.S. Marshal: The characters mostly call him, 'the Marshal'.
  • Worthy Opponent: To Kate.

    Arzt

Dr. Leslie Arzt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arzt_leslie_9207.jpg
"I'm sorry that I'm not cool enough to be part of your merry little band of adventurers!"
Played By: Daniel Roebuck

"There were forty other survivors of this plane crash and we are all people, too."

A junior high school science teacher, who crashes with the fuselage survivors and keeps a collection of native fauna in various jars. Almost all characters continue to pronounce his name "Arts" even though he repeatedly corrects them. Arzt complains about not being included in the various missions of Jack and Locke, finally joining them on a trip to the Black Rock. He dies ironically when a stick of dynamite spontaneously explodes in his hand while he lectures Jack, Locke, Kate and Hurley on how to safely handle it.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Hurley kept mispronouncing his name as "Arnzt", no matter how much Arzt corrects him (even after Arzt's death, Hurley notes that Jack has "some Arnzt" on him). That said, Arzt still prefers "Arnzt" to Leslie.
    Arzt: It's "Arzt", you idiot.
  • Butt-Monkey: Things tend not to go well for Arzt. His date in Australia went badly, he got in a plane crash and...exploded.
  • Character Death: Arzt explodes while mishandling dynamite.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's pretty bitter and snarky.
  • Death by Irony: Doubly so. First, he dies on his first mission after complaining because of never being allowed to join any mission. Second, his role in the mission is to instruct the rest on how to handle dynamite, and he dies when the stick he's using for his demonstration explodes.
  • Embarrassing First Name: After insulting Hurley for pronouncing "Arzt" as "Arnzt", Hurley retorts by using his first name. Leslie responds with, "Arnzt is fine".
  • Explosive Stupidity: In the middle of a speech about handling the dynamite, he sets off a stick by gesturing with it.
  • He Didn't Make It: How Jack reports his death to the survivors.
  • Hidden Depths: In the mobisodes he's revealed to have been in Australia to meet a woman, and in general Arzt just seems like a lonely, insecure man.
  • Jerkass: May be Jerk with a Heart of Gold, depending on how you look at it.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: The stick of dynamite he was waving explodes in the middle of his lecture.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: All that's left of Arzt after his death is some small chunks of meat. Hurley notices some that landed on Jack's shoulder.
Hurley: [audibly grossed out] You got some... Arnzt on you.
  • Meta Guy: He voices the viewers' complaints about what the background survivors get up to.
  • Mr. Exposition: About the monsoon season and handling dynamite. He's even kind enough to give the survivors a physical display about the dangers of improper dynamite transport.
  • Odd Friendship:
    • He, an irritable and plain middle school teacher, forms somewhat of a friendship with the attractive and glamorous Nikki.
    • In the flash-sideways, Arzt is friends with Ben of all people (albeit a much more mild-mannered Ben than the audience is used to), to the point that he doesn't object to Ben using his first name.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He insists on being called 'doctor' despite only being a high school science teacher as opposed to any kind of high-profile expert.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: His explosion came out of nowhere.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Arzt waves a stick of dynamite like it's a banana right after talking about the dangers of not being careful with it.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In a webisode, he admits he lied about the tides to Michael to leave the Island faster, desperate to be rescued. While the Island wouldn't have let Michael, Walt, and Sawyer leave, Arzt's actions indirectly led to the raft encountering the Others as well as lead to Walt's kidnapping.
  • The World's Expert (on Getting Killed): He lectures the regulars on how deadly dynamite can be. He then gives a convincing demonstration.

    Neil Frogurt

Neil "Frogurt"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frogurt_neil_3110.jpg
"...I'm not gonna ease up, 'cause I'm tired and I'm hungry and I'm screwed!"
Played By: Sean Whalen

A survivor who made frozen yogurt ('frogurt') before the crash. He died during the time skips after being shot by flaming arrows.

  • Ascended Extra: He was first mentioned off-handedly in dialogue, then later appeared in a mobisode before finally making an appearance on the show.
  • Asshole Victim: His whiny nature did not endear him to many.
  • Annoying Arrows: How he met his death.
  • Character Death: Neil is shot by flaming arrows during the time skips.
  • Death by Irony: While bitching about not being able to start a fire, Neil is hit by a flaming arrow.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: He doesn't actually like being called "Frogurt".
  • Jerkass: He's constantly moaning about his situation and insulting others.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The first few time skips deprived the survivors of their established camp, shelter, food, and supplies; as unhelpful as Neil's whining was, the situation was as bleak as he claimed.
  • Kill It with Fire: Or a flaming arrow, at least.

    Sullivan

Sullivan

Played By: Scott Paulin

One of the middle section survivors of Flight 815.

  • Hypochondria: Jack refers to him as such, and he's overly concerned about a simple rash.
  • Killed Offscreen: He was likely killed during the flaming arrows incident.

Tail-End Passengers

    Zach & Emma

Zach & Emma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ZackEmma_5682.jpg
Played By: Mickey Graue & Kiersten Havelock

Two sibling children from the tail section of the plane who live under the care of Cindy, following the pair's kidnapping. With Cindy, they follow the Man in Black.

    Nathan

Nathan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nathan_7073.jpg
"We've got kids and people that are seriously hurt. Where are we going to go?"
Played By: Josh Randall

Nathan: I don't remember seeing you on the plane, Ana Lucia.
Ana-Lucia: That's because you weren't on it.

A tail section survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. He was suspected by Ana Lucia of being one of the Others, due to his secretive behavior (which was probably due to his personality).

  • Butt-Monkey: He was on a trip with his work, but took some further time to sight-see in Australia after the others left, so he ended up on the plane doomed to crash. From then on, he's treated with disdain by others, is questioned frequently, trapped in a tiger pit and ultimately killed. Nathan did not have a good holiday.
  • Fingore: Ana-Lucia intended to cut off one of Nathan's fingers to further interrogate him. Nathan managed to avoid being maimed, not that it helped him much.
  • He Knows Too Much: Inverted; Nathan knew absolutely nothing about the Others, which is why Goodwin killed him; as Goodwin points out, if Nathan continued to maintain his innocence after Ana-Lucia cut off one of his fingers, she'd likely start to believe him. Killing Nathan and making it look like the Others extracted him served the dual purpose of keeping Nathan quiet and maintaining Goodwin's own cover.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: He turns to ask Goodwin for directions only to get neck-snapped out of existence.
  • Jerkass: Part of the reason Ana-Lucia and Libby are suspicious of him is due to his argumentative and abrasive personality. Even Goodwin says rather bluntly that he's not a good person, but doesn't expand on this.
  • Neck Snap: Courtesy of Goodwin.
  • Red Herring: For the Others' mole. He has a name that sounds similar to Ethan, they both say they're from Canada, he he argues with Ana-Lucia at every turn and he disappears for long stretches of time. He's actually innocent, and the pleasant, helpful Goodwin is the real mole.
  • The Scapegoat: Goodwin didn't actively frame Nathan, but he was fine with Nathan being mistaken for the mole, as it kept suspicion off of him.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: It looks like Goodwin is about to save him, even preparing a little survival pack of food. As soon as Nathan lets his guard down, Goodwin kills him.
  • Suspect Existence Failure: Goodwin murders him before Ana-Lucia gets around to torturing him. As Goodwin dryly puts it, "If you had cut off his finger and he still told you he was on the plane, I think maybe you would have started to believe you had the wrong guy." Killing Nathan also enabled Goodwin to maintain his cover, since Nathan's disappearance made him look guilty.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: As part of his status as the Red Herring, he was given a name similar to Ethan and both of them claimed to be from Canada. Nathan was probably telling the truth, though.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He only lasts one episode.
