Anime-Original Characters

    Barzan

Voiced by: Junichi Yanagita

A rogue magus looking to use the tomb of Alexander the Great to achieve renown as a magus.

  • Con Man: Got as far as he did by tricking lots of people into coming to Babylon with various excuses.
  • Desecrating the Dead: Barzan's goal is to break into Alexander the Great's tomb using slave labor to raze it for relics.
  • Foil: Like Waver he's a mediocre magus who left the Clock Tower looking for fame and acknowledgement, and aims to achieve it with the help of Alexander the Great. But he lacks Waver's strong morals or post-Character Development humility, gleefully takes advantage of others instead of relying on his own efforts, and treats Alexander's legacy as something to exploit instead of respect, which are what put him in conflict with Waver.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The last shot we see of him is right before a group of evil spirits converge upon him.
  • Magic Eye: Has the basic Mystic Eye ability to immobilize people with his eyes.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Dropped out because he felt the Clock Tower didn't appreciate his talents enough, but Waver figures it's because he's a pretty crappy magus to begin with.

    Mary Lil Fargo

Voiced by: Hisako Kanemoto

One of Waver's former students and an offshoot of the Animusphere magus family. Calls Waver to solve the mysterious murder of her father Ernest after finding his dismembered corpse.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Is seen holding hands with her maid Claire at the end of Episode 2 in a manner that implies the death of her father had something to do with this.
    • Her appearance in Fate/strange Fake (set several years after Case Files) takes the time to point out a ring on her left hand as well, though doesn't elaborate on its meaning.
  • Continuity Cameo: Shows up along with Waver's other students in Fate/strange Fake.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: She knew that Ernest's spell was incomplete and allowed his suicide to take place knowing the spell would fail, in order to free herself from his influence.
  • Ojou: A wealthy and refined young woman who lives in a mansion with a maid.
  • Star Power: As a branch member of the Animusphere family her magical specialty is in Astromancy, and the design of her family mansion reflects it.

    Alec Fargo

Voiced by: Shota Yamamoto (Japanese), Matthew David Rudd (English)

Nephew of Ernest Fargo, and a suspect in his murder.
  • Asshole Victim: Is a rude, boorish good-for-nothing. He's eventually killed by Ernest's revenant for attempting to make off with some of his valuable magic tomes.
  • Star Power: His specialty as a member of the Fargo branch of the Animusphere family, though it's mentioned he's a lout who dropped out of his magical studies.

    Fernando Li

Voiced by: Bin Shimada

A friend and fellow researcher of Ernest Fargo.
  • The Cameo: Is later seen as one of the passengers on the Rail Zeppelin.
  • Facial Profiling: Implied to be Asian, and is drawn with Eyes Always Shut.
  • Necromancer: His magic specialty. It's likely these skills were used by Ernest to manipulate his body parts in the right configuration for his experiment.
  • Red Herring: He's seen peeking, suggesting he's up to something. In the end it turns out that he had no direct involvement with Ernest's death, though it's possible that Fernando contributed some of his necromancy research in order for Ernest to perform his ritual.

    Claire

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi

Servant of the Fargo family.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Is seen holding hands with Mary at the end of Episode 2.
  • Domestic Abuse: Waver suspects that Ernest was physically violent towards her and that this may be a possible motive for her as a suspect.
  • Meido: A pretty young woman who serves as the family maid.

    Ernest Fargo

Voiced by: Hideyuki Umezu

Astromancer and head of the Fargo family branch of the Animuspheres.
  • Abusive Parents: Saw his daughter as nothing more than his personal property and marked her hand to keep her trapped in the manor.
  • Bad Boss: Waver suspects that he was physically abusive towards his maid Claire.
  • Godhood Seeker: Desired to become akin to a god within the domain of his mansion using the ritual.
  • Offing the Offspring: Attempted to consume his daughter Mary as a ghost to achieve full immortality.
  • Star Power: As a branch member of the Animusphere family his magical specialty is in Astromancy, and the design of his family mansion is designed to reflect the heavens. The mystery of his murder is centered around the positioning of his organs in alignment with the classical planets (i.e., including the Sun and Moon, and excluding Uranus and Neptune).
  • Suicide, Not Murder: Waver quickly deduces that the culprit of the murder of Ernest Fargo is none other than the man himself. By dismembering himself and arranging his body parts in accordance with the orbits of the planets Ernest became a revenant in the hopes of attaining immortality.

    Gurdoa Davenant

Voiced by: Yutaka Aoyama

A member of the Zoology department competing for a vacant position after one of its members is assassinated.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Demonstrates the typical magus viewpoint of believing human lives are worth nothing other than as fuel to reach the Root. And he's ultimately arrested for threatening to break the Masquerade rather than for all the lives he's claimed.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Waver points out that a hundred years ago Davenant might've just been an ordinary mage, but modern technology has made his actions far too obvious, and far too easy for muggles to discover.
  • Familiars: As expected from a specialist in Zoology, he has the ability to summon monstrous spectral rabbits to consume electricity and attack people.
  • Fiction 500: Former owner of Carnac, which is this universe's equivalent of Harrods.
  • Shock and Awe: Most of his magic spells involves the use of lighting magecraft in accordance with the imagery of Zeus.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The official subtitles use "Gueldoa" but onscreen text spells it "Gurdoa".
  • Wizard Classic: Looks like a traditional JRPG-style mage with the robe, the beard, and the staff.

    Wills Pelham Codrington

Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno (Japanese), Ben Lepley (English)

An instructor at the Department of Spiritual Invocation who calls for Waver's help in finding the true culprit for the death of his father Trevor.
  • Abusive Parents: His father forced Fairy-type Mystic Eyes upon him then exploited them in order to create the Black Dogs.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Notes that going to the fairy realm is not the same as dying.
  • Chick Magnet: Is introduced with a female student professing her love for him before he firmly rejects her, and Waver mentions his popularity with the womenfolk.
  • Foil: To Waver. Both are young and handsome teachers at the Clock Tower who persistently spurn the affections of the numerous female students who come onto them, and in both cases, it's due to a preexisting obsession with a figure from their past who is currently beyond their reach (Faye/Iskandar). But whereas Wills ultimately chooses to leave the world of the living for the fairy realm with Faye, Waver learning to give up on his dream of reuniting with Iskandar to live for his sake is a major component of his character development.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Rather than blind himself or wait for the Mage's Association to dismantle the portal that causes Black Dogs to run amok, Wills decides to cross into the fairy realm with Faye.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Kairi notes that his eagerness to follow Faye into the fairy realm may be partially provoked by his Mystic Eyes.
  • Magical Eye: Can see fairies due to his "Fairy"-type Mystic Eyes. The fact that he was not born with them like he claimed he was is what ultimately kicks off the Myth Arc.
  • Necromancer: His family's specialty in magecraft is Necromancy, and he attempts to make contact with the spirits of his father and Waletta to solve the case.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Rejects all of his suitors because he's already in love with the fairy Faye.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Can create reinforced knives from thin air with magic invocations of Old English.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Is at least partially derived from the books-specific character Heine Istari, whose storyline was not adapted into the anime. His character design is almost identical, he's skilled in magic-based martial arts, and does not survive the events of his arc.

    Waletta Codrington

Voiced by: Fuyuhana Ono

A member of the main Codrington family and the one to accuse Wills of murdering his father.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Wills mentions that rather than reaching Heaven or Hell, the spirit of Waletta was transformed into a fairy, and that she is waiting for him on the other side of the portal along with his father.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: Is attacked and killed by the Black Dogs responsible for the lightning storms at Marburry Manor.
  • Woman Scorned: Was Childhood Friends with Wills until he rejected her marriage proposal and earned her enmity.

    Camus Peligor

Voiced by: Yuko Kaida (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)

The CEO and a former classmate of Waver's in the Clock Tower.
  • Best Served Cold: Pretended to help Amleth while plotting behind to expose him as a fraud and bring him down as revenge for his role in the accident that took her magic.
  • Bifauxnen: Camus is elegant and attractively androgynous, refers to herself with "boku", speaks with a husky Tomboyish Voice, and dresses in suits and tuxedos.
  • Camp Straight: She's a wealthy tech executive who presents herself in stereotypically masculine attire to the point of using "boku" in the manner of a Butch Lesbian, but shows exclusive romantic interest in Waver who is male.
  • Fiction 500: After leaving the Clock Tower she became a tech CEO for the Muggle world, running Peligor Corp which makes electronics and video games.
  • Fictional Disability: Was magically crippled in an accident involving a griffon as a teenager, which led to her being kicked out of the Clock Tower. Casting the spell that she did at the reunion ended up costing what remained of her magic ability, resulting in her retiring from magecraft permanently.
  • Gratuitous French: Tends to pepper her speech with French phrases.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Developed a crush on Waver that persisted at least ten years, which he tries to dissuade her from by telling her he can no longer reciprocate because his attentions lie elsewhere.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Fell for Waver because of his outspoken willingness to challenge the Clock Tower's elitism as someone who came from a smaller family.
