- Action Survivor: Manages to evade the freaks eating him in the bunker by jumping over beds and pipe railings.
- Big Brother Instinct: will not let anyone harm Mary, even after she's turned.
- Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Zane's Veronica and Violet's Archie.
- Determinator: Shares that with Barrett.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Foolish Sibling to Mary's Responsible Sibling. When Mary turns, he becomes the Responsible Sibling to Mary's Foolish Sibling.
- Mr. Fanservice: He doesn’t have any shirtless scenes, but he is really cute.
- My Sibling Is Off Limits: A non-sexual example. He almost attacked Barrett when he finds out about Barrett torturing a turned Mary for "testing".
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Grover tampers with the Keller siblings' beacon so they won't call any more "blue suits". However, the group who decided to leave the beacon where unable to use it in a safe spot as originally planned due to Freaks claiming it. They were forced to use a alternate spot leading to Felicity’s brutal death. This lead to the groups fracturing due to mistrust and Grover's exile.
- Official Couple: With Violet. They break up in Season 2.

- Secret-Keeper: A terrible one, as he keeps secrets that put the other survivors in danger.

- She blows up Zane's car when she finds out about his cheating.
- Immediately breaks up with Grover after finding out about being a retrieval target.
- Dropped a Bridge on Her: She instantly dies after being stabbed in the eye by Earl.
- Everyone Has Standards: Doesn’t kill a single freak in her duration of the show.
- Hidden Depths: Can make a low grade ether using high school chemistry supplies. It may not last as long as they hope, but it's still admirable.
- Also can make a car blow up, in the case of Zane's car being blown up moments before the chemical spill.
- Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The Dark to Zoe and Natalie's Light.
- Official Couple: With Grover. They break up in Season 2.
- Teen Genius
- Took a Level in Badass: Doesn’t kill a single freak in seasons 1 and 2, and still stays alive.
- Token Minority: Liza Koshy is part-Asian, and manages to be the only Asian in season one, until Felicity and Tanya are introduced in Season 2.

- Break the Cutie: after watching her best friends and boyfriend die, she's a very different person from the pilot.
- The Diva: Played with.

- Delicate and Sickly: Has type 2 diabetes, and before the chemical spill, he was in perfectly good health. He slowly descends into a coma when he runs out of insulin in season 1 and is so badly injured that he cannot heal properly in season 2.
- Lovable Jock: He isn’t a jerk. Only to Barrett because he's an asshole. He's also pretty popular being the basketball star.

- Abusive Parents: His father used to lock him in a closet as a punishment.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: He's smart. Just has a disregard for school.
- Delinquent
- Freudian Excuse: In season 1, he can barely wear a mask because of his claustrophobia. In season 2, Anka reads Diesel's file on the intercom, revealing that Diesel's father used to lock him in a tight space as a punishment.
- Insecure Love Interest: Believes he isn’t good enough for Natalie because he's a delinquent. She proves him wrong.
Barrett Mc Intyre
Portrayed By: Tyler Chase
- Dislikes the New Guy: Doesn’t trust Collins or the drug store survivors upon meeting them.
- Heroic BSoD: After killing La Shawn, he's at a loss for words and watches as Zoe breaks down completely.
- Another one happens when Grover saves him from also being captured by breathing in the contaminated air. His guilt is so prominent that Grover shows up as his guilt.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may be a bastard, but he genuinely cares about others. It's moreso seen with Zoe, Elise, Tanya, and Grover.
- Mercy Kill: To La Shawn.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Grover's Blue.
- The Smart Guy

- We Hardly Knew Ye: He is devoured by Mary, who has turned into a freak, in the third episode of the series.

- Hide Your Pregnancy: In-Universe example. Natalie manages to hide her pregnancy for over 30 weeks from everyone (including her parents and best friend Addy) until Diesel finds out, right when she starts stealing food.
- Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The Light to Violet's Dark.
- Rich Bitch: More focus on the Rich part. It is implied throughout season 1 that she is well off, having a nanny and running for class president on her own because no one would dare run against her. The Bitch part? It comes from her former friendship with Zoe.
- Sacrificial Lion
- Student Council President: Subverted. Her establishing character moment is hanging up a banner, promoting her campaign.
- We Used to Be Friends: With Zoe. They rekindle their friendship mid-season 1.

- Cool Teacher: He has a good relationship with the students, and lets Grover into detention to be close to Violet.
- Fatal Family Photo: Immediately after looking at a photo of his family, he is devoured by the recently turned freaks in the fallout shelter.
