  • Angst Dissonance: When Barrett has his emotional breakdown, it's hard to sympathize with him, unless you believe that killing another person is the right thing to do.
  • Anvilicious: Mercy killing.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • The Keller siblings for different reasons.
      • Ollie, for drugging the survivors with his anti-anxiety medications mixed in a bottle of alcohol, leaving his sister and the survivors behind to get rescued, and lying that they're dead. However, there are those who relate to him because he has an anxiety disorder and also because he's awkward as hell. It doesn't help that he's played by Ryan McCartan.
      • Anka is disliked for reading over Diesel's files over the intercom, kissing Zane, and lied to Ollie about his girlfriend Tanya. On the other hand, Anka is shown for being skilled in archery and can hold her own...in most situations. Just don’t give her a gun.
    • Barrett. The reason why he is not listed under The Scrappy is because he's a very complex character and in a matter of two seasons, he has Zig-Zagged between being this and The Scrappy. That doesn't mean his actions are excused — trying to impose on someone's relationship is not cool and killing someone to eliminate them is definitely crossing the line, however his distrust of the drug store survivors (especially the Kellers) and Collins have been proven right.
  • Broken Base:
    • The introduction of the new characters have been a little divisive. Amongst the group are the Keller siblings and Zane, who was Violet's cheating ex. However as the series went on he turns out to a genuinely nice guy trying to keep everyone safe and make up for cheating on Violet. He becomes more sympathetic after his devastation after Violet’s death.
    • La Shawn's death, both in real life and in-universe. Some fans agree with Zoe, in which Barrett should have waited until she was in the room to make any decisions, however it is very clear that killing La Shawn, regardless of whether Barrett had to wait or not, was the best thing to do.
  • Cliché Storm: The show is criticized for being a regular-degular horror show but with teenagers. Despite this, the show has received good reception by fans.
  • Designated Hero:
    • Grover. The audience is supposed to see him as the one who saves the day, but most of the time he comes off as a secretive and vindictive person. He doesn’t tell anyone of Mary's turning, effectively putting everyone else in danger, and he withholds information about his retrieval target status. Also, he destroyed the beacon.
    • Zoe is immediately established as an Alpha Bitch but her agility and her friendship with Noodle show that she's a generally caring and useful person. However, she has a vindictive side and easily uses the Keller siblings to her benefit.
  • Designated Villain: Barrett is a villain, however he is very book and street smart. He immediately distrusts Collins, effectively saving the group from dying and also becoming experiments. He also, once again, saves the survivors by euthanizing La Shawn. It's more prominent in season 2 when he reveals the real reason why the chemical spill happened to Grover, the only person who trusts and would listen to him.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Natalie Calloway is almost everyone's favorite character.
    • Birdie, for being a badass and not taking shit from others, especially Earl.
  • He's Just Hiding: Many fans have refused to accept Violet’s death and instead assume that the knife to her eye put her in shock rather than killing her and that Jake took her with him when he disappeared.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!
  • Jerkass Woobie: Barrett for the entirety of season 2.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Some former Degrassi fans were thrilled to find out about Aislinn's second major American role (first being Heroes Reborn).
    • Leo has a pretty big fan base from being involved in Disney Channel and because he's good looking. But then the show, weirdly enough, enhanced his acting skills.
    • People who enjoy Vine videos and YouTube vlogs were interested to see how several of their favorite Viners/You Tube stars can really act.
  • Moe: Sadie.
  • Nausea Fuel: Earl, in almost all of his scenes.
    • The freaks eating humans (and probably in general) can be seen as this.
    • When Zoe showed the rotting laceration on La Shawn's leg, you may gag or turn your head away because it's that gross.
  • Questionable Casting: Casting Viners and YouTubers may be a huge disservice to those who don't like Vine or YouTube. However, the show is created by Awesomeness TV, which features a lot of Vine stars in their agency.
  • The Scrappy: Earl, for not only killing Violet, but also verbally and emotionally abusing Hailey.
  • So Bad, It's Good
  • Too Cool to Live: Noodle.
  • The Un-Twist: Grover being a retrieval target means that he will eventually become an experiment, just like Jake and Birdie.
  • The Woobie: Shoutout to Grover Jones for watching his sister turn to a freak, crying in front of his destroyed childhood home, and finding out his father is creating cannibal resistant experiments. Oh, and his breakup with Violet and finding out about her death moments before she actually died.
