    Loptr Empire

Emperor Gair

The old Emperor of the Loptr Empire. He traveled to a faraway continent and made a blood pact with Loptous. Upon returning to Jugdral, he conquered the continent and formed the Loptr Empire. His legacy was destroyed by the Twelve Crusaders.

Saint Maera (Maira)

Brother of one of the Emperor Gairs. He wanted to protect the oppressed people under the Loptr Empire.

    The Loptr Church

Manfroy (Manfloy)

Class: Dark Bishop

The leader of the Loptr faithful that wishes to resurrect their dark god. He orchestrated many of the events to bring forth Loptous and his dark empire.

  • Big Bad: Of Gen 1. He shares the role with Julius in Gen 2, but acts more akin to The Dragon.
  • Blackmail: How he started to get to Arvis's head, via manipulating him due to his Loptous heritage, since people of Loptous blood are all hated and instantly condemned to execution.
  • Casting a Shadow: While he can use the other elements (sans Light) and even, of all things, Staves, he never does.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Justified, since there is no possible way he could hide the fact that he's evil.
  • Consummate Liar: The player's bullshit alarm will be going off every two seconds whenever he has a conversation with Chagall about how he'll make him the world's new emperor. Not that one can really feel sorry for Chagall, mind.
  • The Chessmaster: He appears very early on and, from that point forward, sets up all of the game's events.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His life before the events of the game was... unpleasant. The Oosawa manga reveals as a child, he and a friend snuck out of their village to see the outside world. When they were outed as members of Loptr, they were both burned at the stake; Manfroy's friend didn't make it, and Manfroy himself was horrifically scarred. This turned him from a kind boy into the man we meet in the game proper.
  • Dark Is Evil: Plays it very straight.
  • Divide and Conquer: His plot to resurrect Loptous and his empire involves him and his agents manipulating the royalty and nobility of the various Jugdralian nations so that they can all go to war with Grannvale and therefore have Arvis lay the foundation for the new empire.
  • The Dragon: A faithful one to Julius in Gen 2.
  • Dramatic Irony: Manfroy dies while facing the army of Seliph, who is his Good Counterpart and the man who lost several of his family members because of him.
  • Elite Mook: A variation, in that he has the class of one but plays a much bigger role in the plot. Despite being the game's ultimate puppet-master, he doesn't have his own unique class. Instead, he has the same Dark Bishop class that every high-ranking Loptr leader has.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • To the player. He is leading an entire army of loyal followers, trying to selectively breed a person with the right holy blood for his plot in order to take over the continent.
    • He's also this to Seliph: he became evil after the death of his parents and sister/best friend at the hands of racists, which he swore to avenge. Seliph's goal, on the other hand, is... to avenge the death of his parents and snap his sister out of Manfroy's brainwashing. Ultimately, Manfroy is just like Seliph, especially if you keep in mind that the latter’s Loptous though his mother Deidre. This is sadly ironic as this shows that Manfroy could have been a virtuous person like The Hero, if it wasn't for his hatred getting the best of him.
  • Evil Old Folks: By the time he began his plan, he is a very old man, as shown in Thracia 776, in which he was a grandfather to Leif's eventual companion Sara.
  • For the Evulz: Double subverted. While he's rotten to the core, he's extremely pragmatic about his villainy and never indulges in any Stupid Evil tendencies. He just finds delight in the suffering of others, and will increase it in rather pragmatic ways.
  • Freudian Excuse: Manfroy reveals in a Motive Rant to Sandima that he's lived a tough life due to the persecution of Loptr members and wants revenge on all of Grannvale, and that was what every Loptr member, Sandima included, felt and went through as well. Manfroy's desire for revenge ultimately consumes him to the point where he's willing to abuse his own family.
  • Greed: Manfroy's other motive for serving Loptous is to live like a king in the Loptr Empire.
  • Hero Killer: He was the one who personally killed Lewyn during the battle of Belhalla.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Manfroy originally wanted to get revenge on Grannvale for their constant oppression of the Loptr faith, even after they tried to reform. Over time, Manfroy's hatred envelops him until he becomes an utter monster willing to turn his own granddaughter into a Revenant Zombie.
  • The Man Behind the Man: To King Batou (since he works through Sandima), King Chagall, and Duke/Emperor Arvis.
  • Manipulative Bastard: His preferred method of getting people to do what he wants is to play with their heads until they do it.
  • More than Mind Control: Very stealthily hidden. When Seliph finds the cult's base in the Yied Desert, he learns from Lewyn that those descended from the original Loptr Empire weren't that different from normal human beings at first. However, something corrupted them — whether it was the dark magic (which is outright stated to have horrible side-effects in the Archanea series, which take place in the same world as the Jugdral games), the brainwashing instilled in them in by the cult that raised them, the torment of having to hide inside a desert for their entire life, or something else, Lewyn's words imply that even not Manfroy would have been born evil. The manga seems to confirm it.
  • Motive Rant: Gives a brief one talking with Sandima about how he and the Loptr faith have been oppressed and forced to live in a barely hospitable desert, with only the hope of reviving Loptous to keep them going.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: He decided to spare Julia and use her as a puppet against Seliph's army in the final chapter, due to her own powers. This resulted in Julia getting the Book of Naga and, when re-recruited, wreak havoc on his plans. Loptous even points this out.
  • Number Two: For Julius, once he's born, despite being the Big Bad.
  • Out-Gambitted: Despite everything in the game following his designs, there is one action that he didn't anticipated which ends up dooming his plans for the return of the Loptr Empire. Namely, he didn't catch on the fact that Arvis moved the Book of Naga, which he believed was under the guard of his lord, from Belhalla to Velthomer. This would have been a non-issue if not for him allowing himself to hold the Villain Ball just once.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: His unnamed daughter married a man outside of the Loptr faith against his wishes. Manfroy killed the poor man, leading his daughter to go insane. No wonder his granddaughter Sara hates him and has no issue with going against him and the cult.
  • Recurring Element: With that disfigured look, mastery of dark magic and servitude to a dark being, you'd be forgiven if you think Manfroy is a long-lost student of Gharnef
  • Revenge: Part of his motivation. He wants to get back at the world for making the Loptr faith live in squalor in the following centuries ago since the Empire's fall. The Oosawa manga expands on this, and his Dark and Troubled Past includes almost dying at the stake, being disfigured, and losing his parents and sister-like best friend.
  • Skippable Boss: In fact, it is indeed very possible to go through the whole game without fighting him. And if not...
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: The most charitable explanation for deciding to not immediately execute Julia and instead have her fight Seliph's army, is that after 20 years of everything going his way, he decides to have some fun and play around with his enemies thinking he can take them out whenever he felt like.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He's Jugdral's answer to Gharnef, as he is an Evil Sorcerer who seeks to revive an evil dragon.
  • Villain Ball: He literally grabsit in the end when his victory was almost ensured. Rather than simply have Julia executed, he brainwashed her to confront Seliph's army in an act of sadism. This coupled with the above-mentioned Out-Gambitted mean that his entire plans goes down the drain from this one mistake.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Downplayed in the game, it's revealed as early as the first chapter that Manfroy has lived a horrible life thanks to the persecution of the Loptr faith and wants revenge. In the Oosawa manga, Manfroy explains to Lewyn and Erinys during the Battle of Belhalla that he had an extremely Dark and Troubled Past. He was raised in the Loptr Church's catacombs, not knowing why exactly the Loptr faith was hidden but wishing to see the world with his own eyes. The time he and a girl who was his best friend in the group tried to sneak out and see the world, they were caught; the two and Manfroy's parents were burned at the stake, with Manfroy barely surviving and being horribly disfigured as a result. As a consequence, Manfroy went from a naive and sweet boy to a bitter and hateful Dark Mage, hell-bent on destroying the world that almost killed him; in this continuity, he even cries Broken Tears when he's done explaining his reasons to Lewyn, who senses a lot of deep sorrow in Manfroy's attacks against him.
  • You Monster!: When an All-Loving Hero is out to kill someone without a shred of mercy, well...

Sandima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sandima.png
Class: Dark Mage

A cultist who manipulated the King of Verdane into declaring war on Grannvale. He was searching for the missing daughter of Cigyun.

  • Adaptational Badass: His Fenrir is much scarier in the Oosawa manga than in-game.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's your first Dark magic-user and boss you face.
  • Hidden Eyes: You can't really see his eyes thanks to his hood, giving him a sinister appearance.
  • Evil Old Folks: His age is vague, but he looks to be around the age of Manfroy.
  • Palette Swap: It is easier to say that the other dark cultists are just recolors of his portrait.
  • Poisoned Weapons: Fenrir in the Oosawa Manga.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Convinced Batou to invade Grannvale and made the Princes of Verdane into his pawns. Though in a subversion, he takes orders from Manfroy.
  • Smug Snake: Always wearing a smug grin and supremely confident in his dark magic. To compound this, his artwork had him wrapped with some sort of magical snake, just so the symbolism is complete.
  • Unexpected Character: He made it into the "Choose Your Legends" poll despite being a one-shot boss.

Kutuzov (Cutozou)

Class: Dark Bishop

A cultist in charge of protecting the Yied Shrine.

  • Timed Mission: He lost his Fenrir tome and had some goons find it. Wait too long and he'll get his tome and make it hard for you to siege the shrine.

Judah

Class: Dark Bishop

A cultist in charge of Castle Grutia in Thracia.

Morrigan

Class: Dark Bishop

A cultist in charge of Rados Castle in the Miletos District.

  • Kick the Dog: Seizing Rados Castle reveals that he has already destroyed its town for opposing his rule. Lewyn uses this as an example of why their war is justified and why the Loptous Empire cannot rise again.
  • Palette Swap: Of Clement and Bramsel, interestingly.

The Deadlords (Dark Warlords)

A group of twelve mysterious warriors that serve the Loptr Church and those affiliated with them. These deadly adversaries possess Holy Blood.

Class:
Mus: Baron
Bovis: Hero
Tigris: Warrior
Lepus: High Priest
Draco: Sniper
Anguilla: Mage Fighter
Equus: Bishop
Ovis: Sage
Simia: Swordmaster
Gallus: Dark Bishop
Canis: Shaman
Porcus: Thief Fighter
