Main Characters
Yoo Eun Soo
- Played by: Kim Hee-sun
- Afraid of Blood: Played with. She's a surgeon and has no problem with seeing blood during an operation, but it's a whole other thing knowing (and, on occasion, seeing) blood spilt violently.
- Big Eater: It becomes a bit of a Running Gag that one of her first priorities and concerns is whether or not someone will feed her.
- Cute, but Cacophonic: Played with. As a way to cheer up Choong Jung and distract him from his pain, she teaches him a little song and she uses the shrillest of voices to sing it, prompting a laugh from both the kid and Choi Young.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: She not only has to deal with several life threatening experiences, on top of seeing the man she loves and her newfound friends in almost constant danger, she also is sent further back into the past (100 years to be exact) and has to live there for a year before finding her way back to Goryeo.
- Everyone Can See It: Every character that crosses paths with them can see that Choi Young is her most important person.
- Fun Personified: Because of her many quirks and upbeat attitude.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: So much. And even though she manages to adapt, she still stands out because of her manner, speech and appearance. Hilarity Ensues whenever she tries to apply modern terms and ideas, confusing the people around her, especially Choi Young.
- Hidden Depths: At the beginning she would hear nothing of helping someone unless she could benefit from it somehow, making others see her as coldhearted and greedy. But, as the story develops, she shows that she truly cares for her patients, to the point where she's more than willing to take one of them with her to the present to protect and cure them. Sadly, it doesn't happen.
- I Choose to Stay: She gives up her life in the present to live in the past.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Another Running Gag, whenever she's stressed out during or after dealing with a dangerous situation, she tends to go and pour herself a drink.
- My God, What Have I Done?: After Choi Young breaks his promise to return her to her time, she takes his sword and goes to stab him, fully expecting him to avoid her clumsy attempt. However, he doesn't and lets her impale him, horrifying and shocking her.
- Stepford Smiler: She keeps a happy front so as not to worry newfound friends, especially Choi Young. However, there are several occasions where she fails.
- Shipper on Deck: For the King and Queen. Granted, she already knows it's bound to happen.
- Trauma Conga Line: Let's see, she's taken hostage at a medical convention by a crazy guy with a sword who cuts open the neck of a security guard, forcing her to operate on him, and if she refuses he'll let the guard die and cut another hostage's neck until she does as he asks. Then, after confirming her expertise, he kidnapps her, has her witness how he easily blows off the police barricade with lightning coming from his hands and then pushes her through a portal connected to the past. And this is all in the first episode.
- Team Mom: Not quite obvious at first and she prefers to call herself a big sister, but later it comes to the point she addresses the Woodalchi as children and in turn they seek her for comfort.
- The Medic: The titular Great Doctor of the series.
- You Already Changed the Past:
- After saving the life of a young patient, she finds out that his name is that of the first king of the Joseon dynasty and realises that instead of changing the past, she's actually the one keeping it from being distorted. This obviously freaks her out.
- It turns out that she lived 100 years further in the past and left herself several clues regarding the portal, as well as warnings and her medical instruments that helped her cement her status as a divine healer in Goryeo.
- What's Up, King Dude?: She respects and cares greatly for the Royal Couple, however she knows next to nothing about the social etiquette of the time. Lucky for her, they firmly believe she's from Heaven so she gets a pass on this.
General Choi Young
- Played by: Lee Min-ho
- A Father to His Men: Although he's younger than some of the recruits and is rather distant, the Woodalchi respect and adore him and in turn he does his best to protect them.
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Easily one of the best fighters out there and because of this he's appointed as leader of the Woodalchi in his mid-twenties.
- Badass Family: His father was a well-respected scholar, his aunt became one of the highest ranking ladies in the Court, in charge of the Palace and personal attendant to the Queen. His beloved mentor was the most respected man in Goryeo (even more so than the king of the time), thanks to his prowess and loyalty to the people. His fiancé was also a warrior like him and they generally worked as a Battle Couple during missions.
- Berserk Button: Harming his kids (i.e: The Woodalchi, Suribang, etc ...) is a big no no. Threatening the King and/or Queen is an even bigger one but he almost always manages to keep his cool in those situations. Now, if you really want to push it, just imply you'll make Eun Soo uncomfortable in any way. Go on.
- Brutal Honesty: One of the traits for which he's famous. Has no qualms in calling nobles, scholars and even the very King out whenever he sees them acting in a way that can affect everyone negatively.
- Death Seeker: Happens at least three times. The first time when he lets Eun Soo stab him. Then when he ignores her advice to rest and ends up in a coma, where he debates with his late mentor whether he should wake up or not, and the final time when going against the villain in a Taking You with Me fight before Eun Soo shows up to snap him out of it.
- Doomed by Canon: Or more like Doomed By History. Though it doesn't happen in the series, Eun Soo already knows how and roughly when he'll die, something that severely freaks her out when finding out she saved the one who will cause it.
- Everyone Can See It: Every character that crosses paths with them can see that Eun Soo's wellbeing is more important to him than the whole of Goryeo.
- Even the Guys Want Him: One of the members of the Suribang tends to fawn and flirt with him.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: Briefly, when coming to the present in search of a doctor. Hilarity Ensues several times when he tries to deal with things like cars and phones.
- Heartbroken Badass: In spite of all his prowess and badassery, he is unable to prevent the deaths of those he cared for the most, leading to a Heroic BSoD that would last years.
- My Greatest Failure: Quite a few, actually, though it depends on perspective, seeing as some of the things that he blames himself for were beyond his control. Most notably, he sees his lack of action when witnessing the mistreatment of both his mentor and fiancée as an important factor that contributed to their deaths.
- Shock and Awe: He has lightning powers.
- Trauma Conga Line: Where to begin? Aside from watching his comrades die before his eyes in several missions, he also witnessed the humiliation and murder of his mentor at the hands of a bitter and ungrateful King he swore to protect and serve, who also harassed his fiancée (something that contributed to the death of said mentor, who was trying to protect her) which in turn led her to commit suicide. And this is what happened before the main story started - later on he'll have to deal with several other events that'll make him doubt heavily in himself and his abilities to protect those he loves.
- Sleepyhead: At the beginning, it was normal to see him on the floor or whatever surface was handy, sleeping while everyone else was going about doing their tasks. Justified as he was recovering from a major stab wound.
- Not So Stoic: He keeps calm in battle and is one of the most levelheaded characters in the show, being the one who keeps others from losing their cool. However, there are several instances where he loses his cool when any of his loved ones are in harm's way, especially if he thinks it's his fault that they were put in danger in the first place.
- Team Dad: He refers to the Woodalchi as his kids or children, even when some are older than him.
Supporting Characters
King Gongmin
- Played by: Ryu Deok-hwan
- The Chains of Commanding: While he is the King of Goryeo, he has to be careful of the decisions he makes, especially if those decisions go against the interest of the Yuan Empire.
- Dude, Where's My Respect?: At the beginning, several of the characters would go against his orders and, while they may have had the best of intentions, this sometimes only helped to undermine his authority
- Heroic BSoD: Suffers one after the disappearance of his pregnant wife.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: It takes time but he does develop this relationship with Choi Young.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: While he has his hands tied by the Yuan Empire to do their bidding, he still tries to fight back and regain his country's autonomy.
- Shipper on Deck: Not as much as his wife but, it's obvious he roots for Eun Soo and Choi Young.
- They Really Do Love Each Other: With his Queen. Due to a series of misunderstandings, their relationship started on the wrong foot but soon enough they began to grow closer and closer to the point where it's obvious he can't think of life without her.
- What's Up, King Dude?: Although not as much as with the Queen, Eun Soo is rather carefree when talking to him, though she still treats him far more respectfully than she does other high-ranking nobles.
Queen Noguk
- Played by: Park Se-young
- They Really Do Love Each Other: On her part, she was more than willing to marry Gongmin, even learning korean early on so to communicate better with him but because of his resentment towards Yuan it took time until he drop this attitude and truly see her.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: At the beginning, she suffered from how distant her husband was with her but over time they both learn to trust and care for each other.
- Politically-Active Princess: As the story develops she becomes an important confidant and advisor to her husband.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: While she's still young and rather naive about certain things, she never shies away from her duties as Queen.
- Silk Hiding Steel: She may be soft spoken and frail looking but when push comes to shove she stands her ground and faces her enemies head on.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In the second episode, she gives one to her husband, calling him out regarding his lack of awareness and respect regarding Choi Young's promise he made to Eun Soo of returning her home just because he wished to feel more secure in his own power.
- What's Up, King Dude?: Has a rather relaxed relationship with Eun Soo, who even states that she feels like a sister of the young queen.
Lady Choi
- Played by: Kim Mi-kyung
- Badass Family: Her brother was a well-respected scholar, his son was part of an elite group of warriors, later on becoming the General and personal protector of the King.
- Silk Hiding Steel: She oversees that the customs and behaviour of everyone living in the palace are maintained properly. Still, that doesn't stop her from kicking ass when necessary.
Jang Bin
- Played by: Lee Phillip
- Blow You Away: He can create and direct gusts of wind with his fan.
- Killed Offscreen: While protecting the antidote, he was killed by Hwa Soo In and Eum Ja. We never see the fight or the body.
- Like Brother and Sister: He's quite close to Eun Soo and helps her by explaining terms and traditions of the time, being one of the first friends she makes there.
- The Medic: The other doctor that works at the Palace alongside Eun Soo.
- Oblivious to Love: It's not quite clear but he doesn't seem to acknowledge that his assistant, Deo Gi, has a crush on him.
- The Stoic: One of the most levelheaded characters in the story.
Deo Gi
- Played by: Kim Soo-yeon
- Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed. At the beginning, she was jealous of how close Eun Soo was with Jang Bin but as time went on, she starts acting in a friendlier manner.
- Talking with Signs: Not as refined as the current sign language vocabulary, but she tends to accompany her facial expressions with gestures. Jang Bin is the one who understood her the most.
King Chungjeong
- Played by: Choi Won-hong
- Children Are Innocent: One of the youngest characters, who sincerely loved Choi Young as family and had no interest whatsoever in politics.
- Mercy Kill: While Ki Chul was the one who gave him the poison and ultimately drove him to drink it, it was Choi Young the one who killed him in an effort to spare the poor kid of more pain.
- Sadistic Choice: Ki Chul lies and manipulates him, putting him in a situation where if he doesn't feed Choi Young the poison, Choong Jung would have to face the consequences of the rebellion that was created in his name. And if he did give the poison, then he would have killed his only friend and end up in the hands of Ki Chul to be just another one of his puppets. He decides to drink the vial in order to protect Choi Young.
- Unwitting Pawn: To Ki Chul, who raised a rebellion in his name without the kid knowing, in an effort to discredit Choi Young and trap Eun Soo.
- Yank the Dog's Chain: He's delighted over the fact that he was able to see Choi Young again and meeting Eun Soo, to whom he asked many things about "Heaven", in addition of having hope that she would be capable of curing him. Unfortunately, it was all part of a scheme by Ki Chul that costs Choong Jung his life and the freedom of both Choi Young and Eun Soo.
Woodalchi
A group of elite soldiers in charge of the protection of the Royal Couple, especially the King's.
In general
- Badass Crew: They're amongst the best and most loyal soldiers.
- Bodyguard Crush: It's no secret that they adore Eun Soo and would do anything to keep her safe.
- Heroic Sacrifice: During a coup and when trying to protect the Royal Couple while on the run, they lose several of their members, who bravely gave up their lives in order to stall the bad guys until Choi Young could secure the palace again.
Bae Choong Seok
- Played by: Baek Kwang-doo
- Number Two: The second in command of the Woodalchi.
- Only Sane Man: With the rest of the Woodalchi being rather childish and Choi Young being... Choi Young, he's the one that's the most down to earth.
Dae Man
- Played by: Kim Jong-moon
- Big Brother Worship: Adores Choi Young and looks up to him.
- I Owe You My Life: Rescued by Choi Young when little, he sticks by his side and does his best to aid him.
- Noodle Incident: Not much is revealed about how Choi Young found him, but what little is known seems to have been quite the wild ride.
- Speech Impediment: Has a stutter that increases or decreases depending on how stressful the situation is.
Deok Man
- Played by: Yoon Kyun-sang
- Bodyguard Crush: The one to show the most interest for Eun Soo out of everyone in the group but it soon turns into a platonic feeling.
- Butt-Monkey: Teased by everyone and more often than not on the receiving end of Choi Young's kicks whenever he says something that sounds dumb.
- Hidden Depths: He may appear a bit dopey and clumsy but when it's time for battle, he's ready to stand his ground and sacrifice even his life.
Deol Bae
- Played by: Kang Chang-mook
- Big Brother Instinct: He may not show it so much and he teases them often, but he cares a lot for Deok Man and Dae Man.
- Casanova Wannabe: Tries (and fails) to flirt with some of the ladies working at the palace.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In the last battle against Ki Chul, he gives up his life so Choi Young can have a chance.
- Mauve Shirt: We get to see a softer and more caring side of him whenever he interacts with Choi Young or the other recruits later on in the story which makes his death at the very end a rather harsh blow.
Joo Seok
- Played by: Jung Yoo-chang
- Heroic Sacrifice: Stays behind with a handful of men to try and give the Royal Couple time to find safety but he loses his life in doing so.
- Mauve Shirt: He was one of the main Woodalchi shown at the beginning and Choi Young was shown to respect and trust him. Midway through the story he bites it, laying down his life in order to give his allies more time to escape.
Villains
Ki Cheol
- Played by: Yu Oh-seong
- Ax-Crazy: Becomes increasingly unstable and violent as the series go on.
- Entitled to Have You: Seeing as he's one of the most powerful man in the region, even more so than the King, he has this notion deeply rooted in his mind.
- Immortality Seeker: One of the reasons he's so obsessed with Eun Soo and going to what he thinks is Heaven, is because he wishes to live forever in order to fulfil his many desires.
- It's All About Me: Has this mindset throughout the story, whenever something happens he only worries about how it will affect or benefit him.
- Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Several instances but the most obvious was when he was absolutely certain that Choi Young forced Choong Jung to drink the poison to save his own skin. It didn't cross his mind that the kid was more than willing to die to save his beloved friend.
- Evil Is Hammy: He tends to go all out to remind people of his presence.
- Kick the Dog: In one of the biggest
Tear Jerker moments of the series, he manipulates and is ultimately the killer of the young, sickly ex-king, Choong Jung. - If I Can't Have You…: Whenever someone rejects him, he goes out of his way to destroy that person's life and won't allow anyone to help them in any way. He won't kill them, but he will make them wish for that.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He often takes advantage of the fact that he's the brother of the Yuan Empress to sidestep the law.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Seeing as he's part of the Yuan Royal Family and oversees the King of Goryeo, he's granted a hefty amount of lands and money.
Hwa Soo In
- Played by: Shin Eun-jung
- Dark Action Girl: One of the most active fighters working for the villain.
- Playing with Fire: She can summon fire with her hands.
- Villainesses Want Heroes: Has a crush on Choi Young and tries to seduce him.
Cheon Eum Ja
- Played by: Sung Hoon
- Green-Eyed Monster: Loves his pledged sister, Hwa Soo In, but she only has eyes for Choi Young, which annoys him.
- Musical Assassin: Uses his flute to produce sounds that can incapacitate or kill.
- White Hair, Black Heart: Has long, flowing white hair and has no compulsion in threatening or killing innocent people.
Prince Deok Heung
- Played by: Park Yoon-jae
- It's All About Me: The country is at the verge of war, the tensions are running high in the palace (in no small part, thanks to his schemes) and people are suffering, yet he only cares about the crown and is more than willing to betray his birthplace, disband Goryeo and turn it into a fortress for the Yuan Empire if it means he can have what he wants.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Tells this to Eun Soo, not believing she's from Heaven and that she's lying and conning everyone, just like he does.
- Poison and Cure Gambit: His favourite method of extorsion.
- We Can Rule Together: Offers this to Eun Soo, trying to convince her to switch sides and marry him. When this fails, he switches to threats and warnings.
Jo Il Shin
- Played by: Lee Byung-joon
- Dirty Coward: He demands everyone around him to lay their lives for the king, yet he never tries to walk the talk. Heck, when Choi Young gives him a weapon to help protect the king from an ambush it was clear he was both offended and terrified by the suggestion.
- It's All About Me: It's clear that, while he cares for Goryeo and Gongmin, his greatest concern is gaining as much profit as he can from his position.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Choi Young risked his life not only protecting the Royal Couple (and him) from the enemies but he also went through a portal that nobody knew where it would lead and yet, Jo Il Shin was more than willing to let Choi Young die after he was impaled by Eun Soo, even going as far as removing the sword from Choi Young's body in an attempt to hasten his death.
- Unwitting Pawn: To Deok Heung. He thought he was doing the king a favor by ordering the army to attack Prince Ki Chul's house (at Deok Heun's suggestion) but instead of receiving praise, Gongmin called him out, reinforcing Jo Il Shin's idea that he was an Ungrateful Bastard that only listened to Choi Young and turned on the Royal Couple, this forced Gongmin and Nogook to flee the palace, allowing Deok Heung to steal the throne.
