Heroes

    Taylor Hebert (Vergil)

Taylor Hebert/Vergil

Independent

The protagonist of Devil Trigger.

Prior to her trigger event, Taylor was originally an ordinary high school girl that attended Winslow High School until she became subjected to the brutal bullying campaign orchestrated by Sophia Hess and her former best friend Emma Barnes. She triggered at the start of her second year at Winslow after being shoved inside her locker, which was filled with waste from the wastebin in the girls' bathroom.

Like most Alt!Power fanfics, instead of gaining the power to control bugs, Taylor underwent a major physical change and became a half-demon. She became a Demon Hunter after she encountered the demon Orthrus and is being trained by Rodin.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: When Taylor Triggered, she became a half-demon Artificial Hybrid with powers similar to that of Vergil. Style 2.2 shows that something interfered with the Queen Administrator Shard as it attempted to connect with Taylor.
  • Always Someone Better: In Muscle 3.3, Strix immediately notices how Taylor's fighting style and powers are eerily similar to Vergil's, and upon learning her cape name, disparages her for using it so lightly and claims she's nowhere near namesake's level.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Style 2.9, she saves Parian from being killed by Orthrus.
  • Elemental Weapon: The Devil's Arm "Orthrus" allows Taylor to switch between freezing her enemies solid or burning them with hellfire.
  • Foil: To Vergil, the person whose powers she gained from her Trigger event. Taylor was a human girl that became an Artificial Hybrid when she Triggered, whereas Vergil was naturally born half-demon and half-human. Whereas Taylor wants to become a hero with her newfound powers, Vergil has no such aspirations and only cares about getting stronger. In other aspects such as their weaponry, Vergil's Yamato is a traditional Japanese katana that can cut through dimensions while Taylor's Orthrus is a shirasaya sword that functions as a Fire/Ice Duo Elemental Weapon. Taylor's Summoned Swords are colored orange while Vergil's are blue.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Despite Taylor's desire to join the Wards, Word of God confirms that she will remain an independent cape.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Played with. To Taylor's surprise, her destroying Winslow was met with near unanimous praise from everyone on the PHO. She does, however, have some detractors for saving Rune from the Bloody Cape, believing her to be a Nazi supporter.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Not a katana, but Taylor's Devil's Arm Orthrus is a shirasaya—a Japanese sword with a curved blade lacking a tsuba hilt.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Her hair changed from black to white as a result of her Triggering, giving her some resemblance to members of the Sparda family.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Taylor can create Summoned Swords just like Vergil, which makes sense since she developed a powerset similar to his.

    Victoria Dallon (Antares)

Victoria Dallon/Antares

Ward

A member of the Brockton Bay Wards and daughter to former New Wave cape Carol Dallon.

Having joined the Wards two years ago alongside her adopted sister, Victoria is regarded as being one of the strongest Wards in the PRT to the point many consider her to be the second coming of Protectorate Hero Alexandria. Her primary motivation for joining the Wards was to hunt down the Bloody Cape, though her meeting with Vergil leads to her discovering the existence of demons.

Victoria's powers grant her flight and incredible strength, as well as a force-field that protects her from damage. However, her shield is not perfect and can be shattered if sufficiently damaged.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Rather than go by Glory Girl, Victoria chose the cape persona "Antares," an identity she would not adopt until Ward.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Due to a few factors, such as Mark's death and the New Wave breaking apart, Victoria joined the Wards along with Amy.
  • Berserk Button: The Bloody Cape was this for her for a very long time. In Style 2.1, Piggot noted that whenever a possible sighting of the Bloody Cape was reported, Victoria was always the first to reach the scene and was almost always aggressive. At one point, Amy needed to actually put her to sleep when she went on three all-nighters after a suspected Booody Cape murder.
  • Shipper on Deck: If her drunk ranting to Taylor about how Amy and Paige should just "hurry up and fuck each other" is of any indication.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Despite having finally gotten revenge for her father, Victoria admits to Taylor how she doesn't feel happy that she killed the Bloody Cape or found some sense of closure.

    Anne Barnes (Gemini)

Anne Barnes/Gemini

Independant

Older sister of Emma Barnes and a Devil Hunter working under Rodin.

Unlike Taylor, Anne works as an "indie hero" and generally remains unknown to the public. She makes herself known to Vergil while the latter is fighting off a bunch of Scarecrow demonsGemini is a Tinker with Master abilities; specifically, she creates a Projection that serves as a mirror image of her that can act somewhat independently from her.
  • Action Girl: She's shown to be capable of fighting demons just as well as Taylor, despite the amateurish design of her armor.
  • Ascended Extra: A minor character in the web serial. Here, she's an indie hero and Devil Hunter.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Her Master power in a nutshell. She can create a Palette Swap Projection of herself that can fight alongside her.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Has one attached to her wrist, which she uses to great effect when fighting demons, either by throwing herself at them or by yanking them around like a yo-yo.
  • Hero of Another Story: Anne's been working for Rodin longer than Taylor has, as she's stated to have been active a few months before Taylor met Rodin in February.
  • It's All My Fault: Considers her concerns with college and trying to get her mother to accept her being attracted to girls her greatest failure since she never noticed Emma's problems or Sophia's toxic influence with her sister until the locker incident in Winslow went public. It and her parents getting a divorce caused her Trigger Event.
  • Late Coming Out: Anne discovered she was a lesbian in college after realizing she was attracted by her roommate, nor did she mind kissing her. This became part of her Trigger Event as while her father and sister supported her, Zoe had difficulties accepting this.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: She fights using a shield, which she can not only send flying a la Captain America style, but also rotate it fast enough to act like a sawblade.

Civilians

    Rodin

Father Rodin

Fallen Angel

The owner of the Gates of Hell bar.

A mysterious man who arrived on Earth Bet some time ago as part of his "vacation," he is the first to realize the true extent behind Taylor's trigger event and begins to teach her how to use her newfound demonic powers. Contrary to many people's belief, Rodin is not a parahuman, nor is he even human for that matter.

    Danny Hebert

Danny Hebert

Civilian

Taylor Hebert's father.

A member of the Dock Worker's Union, Danny initially struggled to reconnect with his daughter following the loss of his wife. It had not been until the fateful incident at Winslow High School that Danny finally managed to get his priorities straight and focus more on becoming a pillar of support for his daughter instead of throwing himself into his work.
  • Berserk Button: After the incident at Winslow, hurting his daughter is a very good way to piss him off something fierce.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He has no idea that his daughter is a cape, much less a devil hunter.
  • Parents as People: Danny knows that he's not perfect, having thrown himself into his work to forget the pain and loss of his wife and ignoring his daughter in the process. To his credit, Taylor doesn't hold it against him and realizes she's partially at fault for things getting as bad as they did.

    Alan Barnes

Alan Barnes

Civilian

Emma Barnes' father and a friend of the Hebert family.

Alan is a divorce lawyer and the father of two children, though following the Locker Incident, his familial situation has become exceedingly complicated to the point of being in the midst of a divorce himself. He is responsible for helping Danny start a lawsuit against Winslow High School.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's very supportive of Danny even after he learns Emma was involved in a vicious bullying campaign and one of those responsible for trapping Taylor in her locker.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: When Danny meets him in his interlude at the end of Subhuman, Alan is described as having a slovenly appearance and has developed a gut that hangs over his trousers. This is in large part due to his own martial troubles.
  • Irony: He specializes in divorce cases, and as of the third arc, he's going through one himself.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Because of his connection to Emma, he is not allowed to have any part in the Winslow case. He manages to get around this by handing the case off to his colleague Carol Dallon.

Demons

    Fury

Fury

Breakneck Predator
A sub-species of the Riot demons, the Fury is the result of years of evolution devoted for a singular purpose: to hunt and kill its prey in the most efficient manner possible. Several years before the start of the story, a Fury found its way to Earth Bet and went on a killing spree, targeting capes and is responsible for the deaths of numerous heroes and villains, though mostly the former. It would eventually take up residence in Brockton Bay.
  • Arc Villain: Of Subhuman, the first story arc of the fanfic.
  • Hero Killer: This thing has killed numerous capes, especially heroes. Among its many victims are Mark Dallon AKA Flashbang and Mouse Protector.
  • It's Personal: Antares has a serious grudge against the Bloody Cape, for obvious reasons.
  • Lightning Bruiser: In Rodin's Demon Guide, Taylor has it listed as a Brute, Striker and Mover. It moves incredibly fast to the point its literally speeding through dimensions and has to force itself to stop. The blades growing from its forearms also inflict wounds that are stated to be next to impossible to heal from.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: It has numerous titles and nicknames, though its most common one is the Bloody Cape.
  • Spanner in the Works: This thing is more or less the main reason why the New Wave disbanded, having killed Mark Dallon and crippled Neil Pelham when it arrived in Brockton Bay.
  • Starter Villain: The Fury demon is the first "villain" Taylor battles after officially starting her cape activities.
  • You Killed My Father: The first thing the Fury did when it arrived in Brockton Bay was attack New Wave and kill Mark Dallon. As a result, Victoria is dead set on getting revenge.

    Orthrus

Orthrus

Originally two separate demons possessing fire and ice powers respectively, Orthrus is the result of said demons undergoing a forceful Fusion Dance by the King Cerberus to serve as its personal guard. One such Orthrus was encountered by Taylor in the Trainyards, where it killed a Merchant drug dealer and a runaway before it discovered Taylor and attempted to kill her.

Lesser Devils

Mega Scarecrow
Animated, patchwork bodies brought to life by a congregation of Trypoxylus, beetles native to the Underworld. The Trypoxylus have managed to enter the human world and are otherwise harmless unless in large groups, especially if they find something they can inhabit and control. Taylor encounters these demons in the Muscle Arc.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In Devil May Cry 4, the black Scarecrows are called Mega Scarecrows. Here, Taylor refers to them as Giant Scarecrows.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Not them, but what they're following. According to Rodin, the Trypoxylus are little more than bottom feeders who follow stronger creatures. In this case, they're implied to follow Strix.
  • King Mook: The Mega Scarecrows. In addition to being larger than its lesser fellows, it is considerably tougher and can even direct the weaker Scarecrows, as shown in Muscle 3.7.

    Strix

Strix

A member of the Fallen cape organization. A relatively new cape who appeared in brutal fashion and has been kidnapping the citizens of Brockton Bay for unknown purposes. It is not until Taylor encounters him that she discovers his true nature.
  • Affably Evil: He's awfully polite and courteous despite having nearly cut Taylor in half, destroyed half of one of Victoria's lungs and sliced off Barricade's legs.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Inflicts one on Taylor, Victoria and Eric. Throughout the whole fight, he manages to evade them or parry their attacks, and Antares only ever manages to land one hit, and even that seemed to do jack all. Later gets put on the receiving end when Rodin defeats him in mere seconds.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Any villainous cape qualifies, but Strix takes it up a notch.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "Strix" is the name of a bird that's associated with witches and certain fokloric creatures. It's also known to eat human flesh and drink blood.
  • Sinister Scythe: Wields one as his weapon of choice.
  • Technicolor Fire: He can conjure purple flames.

    Colossus

Colossus

A demon summoned by Strix during a PRT operation to rescue the hostages taken by the Fallen. A member of the same race as Goliath from Devil May Cry 5, he aspires to become the King of the Human World by subjugating it.
  • Achilles' Heel: His stomach. Taylor discovers it to be his weakpoint after noticing a build-up of frost after sending several ice-infused Summoned Swords into it, making it weaker than his thick hide. She enlists Purity's help to bombard it when she gets Colossus to open his second mouth again.
  • Belly Mouth: Being of the same species of demon as Goliath, he has a larger secondary mouth on his stomach, which he uses to spew out giant fireballs or suck things into it.
  • Extra Eyes: With a dose of Eyes Do Not Belong There. He has four eyes on his face and several more on his stomach.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Devours pretty much anything his second mouth swallows up, from nearby debris to wrecked cars.
  • Hellfire: Spews the stuff either from the mouth on his face or the one in his stomach. Rodin's Demon Guide states the stuff flows through his entire body, which raises his body temperature to the point that prolonged physical contact with him results in some nasty burns, as Antares can attest to.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Much like Goliath, he has dreams of grandeur and desires to become the king of the Human World. Not only does he realize there are bigger fish in the form of the Endbringers, but Taylor and the heroes kill him before he has a chance to make that dream a reality.
  • Vacuum Mouth: Sucks up anything his second mouth can get its fangs on, which he proceeds to chew up and spit out as molten fire balls.
