Characters that appeared in NAITO's Canticle. This page is for Mura and his True Companions.
This page contains massive spoilers, none of which are marked. Tread carefully.
Mura
The main protagonist of Canticle. A demon and an orphan that was raised as a thief and eventually turns to the life of an assassin. He does this as a way to free himself from his servitude.
- The Artful Dodger: Was adopted by a gang of pickpockets and spent most of his life as one, eventually becoming their best.
- A Scar to Remember: The Anima Stain located on his left pectoral.
- Assassin Outclassin': He's constantly hunted by assassins and killers after his exile, but always manages to evade or defeat them.
- Badasses Wear Bandanas: Well, it's a headband but still counts.
- Battle Aura: Mura unintentionally releases one near death, causing everyone in the Zorastarot Tournament stadium to either lose consciousness or vomit from the raw magical power.
- Chaste Hero: The most Mura comes to anything resembling romance is a passing thought of Lamia sounding cute. Word of God has confirmed this is because Mura is asexual.
- Emergent Human: After he's exiled to Earth.
- Fan Disservice: His torture courtesy of Nergal, which was so dark it is currently the only chapter to have a reader discretion notice. He's stripped entirely naked, kicked and beaten senseless by the archdemon and finally given the Anima Stain which perforates his soul.
- Friendly Neighborhood Demon: Despite being a demon, he's one that lives among humans and protects them.
- Giver of Lame Names: Comes up with the nickname "Bloodstrider", which prompts some mocking from a few characters. Eventually becomes inverted into a moniker that inspires fear.
- Hero-Worshipper: It's implied by Mura's reaction to meeting Naraka for the first time that he's a big fan.
- Hunter of Monsters: What Mura becomes after gaining the rank of Jikininki and eventually shifts to Hunter of His Own Kind when he's exiled to Earth to live as a human.
- Ignore the Fanservice: How he reacts to most sexually-heated encounters he has, especially with Lamia.
- Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Often Lampshaded and played for laughs is the fact that Mura has excellent aim when it comes to firing magic and throwing weaponry, but completely sucks at firearms. Every time he shoots a gun, you can guarantee it'll miss entirely.
- I Owe You My Life: Mura was found and raised by Belial as a baby. While initially grateful, in his later years Mura realizes this is more of an Unwanted Rescue.
- Martial Arts Headband: Is always depicted wearing his trademark headband.
- Mr. Fanservice: Gets the most of any male character so far in the series, having his naked ass seen by Lilith and forced into wearing a sexy cop outfit for the sake of a disguise. Even descends into Fan Disservice after being strapped down naked by Nergal and tortured.
- Once Done, Never Forgotten: Although he comes up with the moniker "Bloodstrider Mura" for himself as part of a charade, it ends up sticking; much to Mura's chagrin. This later becomes a name that inspires fear rather than mockery.
- Punished for Sympathy: He's exiled to Earth and stripped of his powers for refusing to assassinate an innocent human girl.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Kishin's Red Oni.
- Shameless Fanservice Boy: He openly disrobes in front of Naraka without a care. Naraka however is less than pleased at his naked state.
- Superpowered Evil Side: Mura's Trance Form, which he can tap into by submitting to his inner demonic spirit and allowing it to take over.
- Trapped in Another World: When he gets exiled to Earth.
Naraka
The deuteragonist of Canticle. A retired legend in the world of assassins that now serves as an adviser to the Empire of Yomi. He acts as a proper father figure and mentor to Mura.
- The Anti-Nihilist: His outlooks on life are that it can be short and painful, but it's also worth living and making a difference while you're alive.
- Badass Teacher: One of the most famous demons in the underworld who also happens to be a legendary assassin.
- Balance Between Good and Evil: Believes that both order and chaos must exist (each to a controlled degree) to obtain a peaceful world. While he doesn't oppose the eternal rivalry between Yomi and Nirvana, he recognizes Mara is a deadly threat to the balance and wishes to tip the scales back to neutral.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Shows off his unexpected courtroom skills while defending Mura during his trial.
- Curtains Match the Window: Has purple hair and purple eyes too.
- Eccentric Mentor: Naraka can act goofy at times, loves his fans and smiles or laughs his way out of conflict.
- Familiar: His three-legged crow, Yatagarasu. It also serves as his Thrall.
- Honest Advisor: He's an adviser to the emperor of Yomi, probably the only one that doesn't mince words or kiss ass.
- Intrigued by Humanity: Has a fascination with humans and believes demons can make peace with them one day.
- Jack of All Stats: He has the highest all-around stats of any character in the series, as is fitting of the Second Legendary Demon Hero.
- Like a Son to Me: How Naraka views Mura over time.
- Machiavelli Was Wrong: A firm believer that peace can only come about through proper leadership, kindness and understanding between races.
- Oppose What You Suffered: Is implied to have this as his moral code, due to hints of having lived a rough and impoverished life similar to Mura's.
- Perfection Is Impossible: Naraka says that after his many years combating the many evils of the underworld and the human realm, what he wants most is a world where everyone has evolved beyond the point of petty indifference and hatred. However, he realizes that this is something he'll likely not live to see; hence his desire to pass on his skills and beliefs to Mura in the hopes he can help usher in peace to the world.Naraka: A perfect world would be one without fear, sadness and hate; for mankind would not know what it was.
- Please Put Some Clothes On: Says this to Mura after seeing him entirely in the buff.
- Renowned Selective Mentor: Naraka is one of the strongest characters in the series so far and chose to mentor Mura due to his inkling that Mura has some serious hidden potential. In fact, Mura is the only student Naraka has ever had.
- Retired Badass: Used to be ranked First in the Jikininki Ten before he retired.
- Rousseau Was Right: He believes that everyone is born as an innocent blank slate, free from good and evil. Naraka views societal contracts and constructs as the things that shape people into who they are and what they believe in.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: A rare heroic example. After Mura's arrest, Naraka contacts his old friend and rival (who also happens to be chief judge): Hurr Nidar. Using this to his advantage, Naraka and Nidar hatch a plot to help Mura and Lilith escape from potential death sentences.
- Warrior Poet: He's a skilled tactician, fighter and a philosopher. His enjoyment of debating with colleagues is something Naraka has an infamous reputation for.
- The Wonka: He's childish, goofy and a bit eccentric at times; but Naraka is one of the smartest and strongest characters in the entire series.
- World's Best Warrior: He's recognized as the Second Legendary Demon Hero, a title that was originally given to Tiamat - a demon so powerful she was revered with godlike acclaim. Naraka has the skills to back up such a title, effortlessly overcoming any obstacle in his path.
Lilith
A Youkai and Mura's Thrall. She's also his best friend and acts as his guide to human culture.
- A Scar to Remember: The Anima Stain located above her left breast.
- Barred from the Afterlife: Lilith cannot remember what her identity or memories were during her life. Thus, she travels with Mura in the hopes of re-obtaining them over their adventures.
- Combat Parkour: Lilith frequently jumps off walls and flips about while fighting.
- Fan Disservice: Her torture at the hands of Nergal, which is so far the only chapter to have a reader discretion notice. She's stripped entirely naked, beaten by the archdemon, dragged across the ground with his telekinesis and finally given the Anima Stain which perforates her soul.
- Fusion Dance: She can fuse into Mura's body, allowing him to perform magic by combining her soul with his.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: When she's initially introduced, Lilith acts like a little asshole towards Mura. However as they spend more time together, they become fast friends.
- Little Miss Badass: She's an experienced pickpocket and can hold her own in a fight.
- Ms. Fanservice: Her skintight outfit frequently falls into this, along with a few instances with her in schoolgirl outfits or completely disrobed. Falls hard into Fan Disservice when she's stripped naked by Nergal and tortured.
- Mystical Waif: Lilith is a young ghost that allows Mura to perform magic when they fuse.
- Older Than They Look: She still has the physical appearance of a fourteen year old from when she died. However chronologically, she's technically eighteen and reminds people of that fact.
- Only in It for the Money: The sole reason Lilith initially joins Mura in the Zorastarot Tournament.
- Our Ghosts Are Different: Despite being a ghost, Lilith cannot become intangible or phase through solid objects.
- Recruited from the Gutter: Mura finds her initially robbing folk in alleyways. He changes her life forever after defeating her, making her his Thrall.
- Stripperiffic: Her entire Yokai outfit is comprised of a skintight bodysuit, vest, gloves and boots. This is due to Lilith being reborn in the traditional yokai attire. Lessened much so after her exile to Earth.
- Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: She wears skimpy clothing, steals from people, make death threats to thugs and so on.
Tomoe Nagata
A first-year delinquent at Sekien Academy who allies with Mura. Her skill as a kickboxer and unwavering courage make her just as skilled as any demon.
- Action Girl: Tomoe is always willing to kick some ass if need be.
- Ass-Kicking Pose: Has one in her debut chapter sketch, which is also the character image for her page here!
- Boxing Battler: A practitioner of Muay Thai to be precise.
- Japanese Delinquents: While not as high up on the delinquent scale as she may appear, Tomoe still has a rebellious spirit.
- Kick Chick: In addition to her fists, a majority of her fighting style comes from fast kicks.
- Only I Can Kill Him: To Shuten.
- Seeking the Missing, Finding the Dead: The end result after searching for her lost best friend, Junko.
- Talking Appliance Sidekick: Tomoe is usually accompanied by her flying robot companion, Ai.
Ai
Tomoe's handheld robotic companion. She's always seen by her master's side, giving support the best way an A.I. can.
- Agent Scully: Invokes this a lot. Ai refuses to believe in the concept of magic and the paranormal, instead believing that those who claim to be supernatural are simply identifying as such or Daydream Believers. Other instances she can't comprehend are brushed off as an "unidentified species".
- Conditioned to Accept Horror: Has a few moments of this due to her programming, which is typically Played for Laughs. One instance has her casually remarking that they should report the existence of spirits to the government as a new species.
- Cute Machines: Ai is small and adorable, especially with her avatar on display in all its cuteness.
- The Drag-Along: Despite not having any practical functions to serving on Mura's team and wishing to stay at home maintaining a normal life, Tomoe and the others drag her along anyway.
- Non-Action Girl: Falls into this category. She has no way to fight or defend herself, aside from anti-theft protocols which simply deliver a mild electrical shock. Even when it comes to providing advice in a fight, she tends to state the obvious.
- The Pollyanna: Seems to be this to Mura's group. Whenever something is about to go terribly wrong, she'd the first to suggest looking on the brighter side.
