Literary references: He is named after Japanese author Heigo Sakaguchi, who wrote under the pen name Ango Sakaguchi. His ability is a reference to a pair of Sakaguchi's essays, "Discourse on Decadence" and "Discourse on Decadence Part II."

A government worker whose ability is named "Discourse on Decadence". Ango once worked as the Port Mafia's Intelligence Agent, but it was under the Government's orders to spy on the mafia's activities. During his time working as an intelligence agent under for the Port Mafia, he also became an agent for Mimic under Mori Ougai's orders.


  • Badass Bureaucrat: He's a government worker who managed to successfully infiltrate not one, but two highly dangerous criminal organizations and lived to talk about it.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: He joined the Mafia as a spy for the government, then joined Mimic as a spy for the Mafia. His loyalty ultimately remains with the government.
  • Easily Condemned: Dazai still holds a grudge against him for his role in the Mimic incident, even though Oda's death wasn't his fault and Ango was the one who cleared Dazai's record so he could pursue honest work.
  • Knowledge Broker: He's known for being a valuable information source. It's the main reason why Dazai hasn't completely cast him aside despite their complicated past.
  • Living MacGuffin: His disappearance kicks off the "Dark Era" arc and Odasaku spends much of it investigating what happened to him.
  • Non-Action Guy: In contrast to Dazai and Oda, Ango never participates in a battle. Justified since his power isn't suited for fighting.
  • Odd Friendship: He shared an unusual friendship with Dazai and Oda until Ango was revealed to a Double Agent and everything went to pieces.
  • Psychometry: He can see the memories and feelings left behind at places he touches.
  • The Mole: Spies on the Mafia for the Japanese government and Mimic for both.

Head of the Japanese government's Ministry of Internal Affairs, Special Abilities Division. Ango's boss, and the one who advised Dazai to join the Armed Detective Agency.


  • Badass Bureaucrat: He's a government worker who regularly deals with people who have dangerous abilities and grants licenses to businesses and organizations that rely on abilities.
  • Bald of Authority: He's completely bald and leads the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Special Abilities Division.
  • Enemy Mine: He's been willing to cooperate with the Mafia on multiple occasions in the name of dealing with bigger and more immediate threats, such as Mimic.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: This in general goes up for the entire series, but Taneda in particular looks a suspicious lot like the actual poet.

An agent from the Special Ability Department of the Government. Appears in Dead Apple as a cameo and Gaiden features her as a deuteragonist. Her ability involves the creation of shadow creatures, one of which will always kill anyone she wants to murder before she can.


  • Casting a Shadow: She can create and manipulate shadows, forming it into creatures where she can form a 'life' by.
  • Deuteragonist: Gaiden features her as a deuteragonist who works alongside Ayatsuji.

Literary references: He is named after the Japanese writer Uchida Naoyuki, who writes under the pseudonym of Yukito Ayatsuji, who is best known for his novel Another.

His Ability, Another, is one of the most dangerous that exist: as soon as he figures out who committed a crime he is tracking, that person will be struck by a lethal accident, irrevocably.


  • Creepy Doll: Always carries one with him, he has a weird collection of them (like his real life counterpart).
  • Gratuitous English: His Ability name is in English, like the original book title.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He was especially created in tandem with the actual author, who is still alive as by now.
  • Meta: The real Ayatsuji has a twitter, and he reacted on a hint of his counterpart coming to Mayoi (BSD's smartphone game), with 'Ooohh...?'

The main antagonist of Gaiden who has been running amok for some time. Ayatsuji is currently on his trail.

    N (SPOILERS) 

The military scientist responsible for experimenting on the original Chuuya and cloning him.


  • Abusive Parents: Technically. N is only the clone Chuuya's creator, but he was responsible for performing extremely unethical experiments on the boy. When the current Chuuya escaped the lab he was emaciated, and after Chuuya was recaptured, N subjected him to electrocution while claiming to be his creator.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When he fears Chuuya is going to kill him, N begs for his life and tries to convince the boy he was Just Following Orders and never meant to harm him despite the evidence to the contrary.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: N acts nice and says he wants to show Chuuya the truth about his past, but is quickly revealed to be a sadistic scientist willing to experiment on children, and spends his last moments alive unleashing Guivre the Beast on Yokohama out of spite.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: N tries brainwashing Chuuya, and every time he resists, N has him electrocuted.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Not even Dazai predicted N rushing out onto the battlefield just after Verlaine is brought under control, and unleashing Guivre the Beast before dying.
  • Hate Sink: He really doesn't have any redeeming features. He experimented on two young boys, torturing them and leaving them on the brink of death, he tricked Chuuya into getting recaptured and made him watch the other Chuuya die before subjecting him to torture again. After that, he sicked the dead Chuuya's skeleton on everyone and upon being was rescued after being stranded by Verlaine, N uses his last moments alive to screw everyone over and turn Verlaine into a Kaiju.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He pulls this on Chuuya.
  • Mad Scientist: He experimented on a young boy whom he left on the brink of death to create to create the clone Chuuya, and continued to experiment on him despite him also being a young child.
  • Only Known by Initials: N is only referred to as 'N' with his real name being unknown.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When he's on the verge of death, he interferes with the Port Mafia's attempt at stopping Verlaine and forcibly transforms the man into a monster while laughing maniacally.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He was perfectly fine with performing torturous experiments on Chuuya, who couldn't have been older than seven and had been kidnapped from his parents to boot. He's also fine subjecting the teenaged Chuuya to torture.
