Mall Rat

    As a Whole

Four wayward demons who have grown to prefer life on Earth. They're in a band.

  • Affably Evil: All of them, save for Misroch. They're demons and tempt people into sin, and have no qualms about murder, but they're also generally pretty chill, likable people.
  • Anti-Hero: All of them fall somewhere on the scale, committing many bad deeds without a care, but still being sympathetic and engaging protagonists. They're rarely actively malicious, if only because they don't want to earn too many sin coins.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: They're demons, it comes with the territory. Murder and cannibalism are totally fine by them, but they genuinely value loyalty and friendship, and when Belzagor questions why Trainee can work on Christmas, Misroch chides her, "She's Jewish. Don't be ignorant!"
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • When they find out Carpasinus is coming up to ream them out for losing Hornblas.
    • When they find out Trainee and the goth teens used Hornblas' ID number to buy a ticket to Hell, meaning that the system actually showed them entering Hell, and therefore, they still have no idea where Hornblas actually is.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: They can tempt people into sin when they bother to try, but they mostly can't be bothered, not least because they don't actually want to go home.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: They're all really bad at hiding their demonic natures, even when in human skin.
  • Really 700 Years Old: They all look like average adults (their actors are in their 20s and 30s, for reference), but are all at least six thousand years old.
  • True Companions: No matter what they go through, they stick together through thick and thin. Xaphan joins the gang over the course of the first season... while Hornblas apparently leaves.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: They argue a lot, especially Belzagor and Misroch, but it's obvious that they are the best of friends and care deeply for each other.

    Hornblas

The lead singer of Mall Rat, who introduced everyone else to one another. He's also a summoning demon, which makes him very useful in Hell. As of the first episode, he's missing. Voiced by Sheldon Brown.

  • Always Someone Better: Misroch is bitter that they'll never live up to his example.
  • Ascended Demon: He reveals in the first season finale that he's pulled a Heel–Face Turn and is now an angel once again.
  • The Ghost: His disappearance and the search for him drives the first season, and he's mentioned in every episode—not to mention heard on the band's voicemail at the start of every episode.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: He's gone missing at the start of the series, and only appears in recordings. Until the first season finale, that is.
  • Heel–Face Turn: At some unknown point, he switched from being a demon to fighting for the angels.
  • Magnetic Hero: He can get pretty much anyone to like him, and was the first to befriend everyone else in the group.
  • Nice Guy: By all accounts, and in what little we see of him in recordings, he seems like a friendly and easygoing guy, and he's known to be able to befriend anyone. Perhaps foreshadowing his turn to Heaven.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: There's no indication he and Belzagor have anything romantic going on, but she seems to have been his closest friend, and is the most concerned for his well-being.
  • Unseen No More: He finally puts in an appearance in the first season finale.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is very hard to talk about him in any depth without spoiling the first season finale.

    Belzagor

A demon of invention, who now works at Gadget Hut in the mall. Mall Rat's bassist. Voiced by Susannah Wilson.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Her friends call her "Belz."
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: As things spiral further out of her control, this increasingly becomes her go-to response. She prefers Holy water.
  • Insistent Terminology: She always refers to her invention as "the Fur-Baby," and hates the name "Furby."
  • It Will Never Catch On: Her opinion of cell phones and online video streaming.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She's invented several gadgets, which work almost instantly.
  • Laughing Mad: Her reaction when she realizes her Fur-Baby invention is what's causing her influx of sin coins; it's making children go crazy and commit evil acts.
  • Nice Girl: She's not exactly warm and cuddly, but she's easygoing and approachable.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Implied to be this with Hornblas. She seems to be the closest to him, and is very concerned for his welfare.

    Asmoraius

A demon of lust who will flirt with anyone. He works at the mall's carousel and is Mall Rat's guitarist. Voiced by Mark Wolf Roberts.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • He calls everyone he likes "darling," especially Misroch.
    • His friends call him "Asmo."
  • Amicable Exes: Downplayed. He and Misroch are friends, but in a definite Slap-Slap-Kiss sort of way.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Leave him be and he's generally quite pleasant. Piss him off, and prepare for bodily harm.
  • Camp Gay: Flamboyant, loves dancing and fashion, and definitely into dudes. However, his attraction to Misroch and other comments imply he may be pansexual.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: He can seduce anyone, regardless of gender.
  • The Fashionista: His historically inspired gothic outfits are always on point, often with impeccable makeup to match.
  • Flaming Devil: Unashamedly campy and open about his sexuality, and a demon of Hell.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: He loves sex and flirting, but this is never portrayed as a character flaw, and he's genuinely likable and friendly.
  • Love Across Battlelines: Unbeknownst to him, he's courting an angel: Trent.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the one who explains sin coins to Xaphan and the audience. Lampshaded.
Xaphan: You taught me everything I know! Almost literally!
  • Mr. Vice Guy: For all his faults, he's a good friend and generally fun to be around.
  • Perky Goth: He dresses in Victorian-style clothing and wears makeup, but he's easily the most cheerful member of Mall Rat.
  • Really Gets Around: Yeah. He actually met Hornblas at an orgy. Justified, given his job.
  • Succubus in Love: A flirtatious demon of lust who has genuine feelings for both Misroch and Trent.

    Misroch

A former line cook from Hell, and current owner of Weiner World. Mall Rat's drummer. Voiced by Elliot Gindi.

  • Amicable Exes: Downplayed with Asmoraius. They are still friends, but they argue a lot and their entire relationship runs on Belligerent Sexual Tension.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: They're worried they're this, but it's not true. The others certainly get fed up with their crap, but as Asmoraius points out, they wouldn't have stuck around if they didn't love them.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: In Hell and on Earth, they're a bit of a nobody, and it drives them more than a little crazy. This is part of the reason for their resentment towards Hornblas.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Most of their grandstanding and jerkassery is a cover-up for how little regard they actually have for themselves.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite their obvious jealousy towards Hornblas, they're not wrong when they say he's a total flake, and as anyone who's ever worked on any sort of team or ensemble will tell you, that can get very old, very quickly.
  • Jerkass Realization: They're taken aback when Trainee points out they're not very nice to their so-called friends, and realizes she has a point.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: They're rude and hard to deal with, but they sometimes show a softer side, and do genuinely care for their friends. They also refuse to leave Trainee behind when the Reckoning starts, showing they did grow fond of her.
  • Loser Protagonist: In Hell, they were a lowly line cook, and on Earth they're a lowly fast food restaurateur. They're painfully aware of their place at the bottom of the totem pole.
  • Mean Boss: Trainee goes through a lot at their hands.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: "Gender is a silly human construct and it is beneath me."
  • Small Name, Big Ego: They're convinced their former job as a line cook (and current job as a fast food place owner) is way more impressive than it is.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the gang, they're easily the most unpleasant to be around, as well as the one most likely to commit some sort of horrible act, such as murder. Ironically, they're actually the worst at earning sin coins.
  • Tsundere: Towards Asmoraius. They're quite likely to pick a fight with him or snap at him for calling them "darling," but every now and then their actual affection for him seeps through.
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: They're a total jerk, which makes it easy to laugh at their suffering.

Hell

    Xaphan

A demon from the bellows of Hell who's sent up to replace Hornblas. She is decidedly not in the band. Voiced by Isa Braun.

  • Bookworm: She quickly develops a love for reading.
  • Easily Impressed: It's not hard to blow her mind. Justified, as she's doing basically everything for the very first time.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Being alone down in the bellows has led to her craving camaraderie and company something fierce. When Trainee says she wants to be friends, she's thrilled.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Due to her job in Hell being isolated and monotonous, never requiring her to leave the room or speak to anyone else, she's not up-to-date on things that are common knowledge to most demons, such as what sin coins are or that saying "God" will cause her to burst into flames.
  • Mundane Luxury: After spending her millennia-long existence in one room doing one thing, everything about Brimstone Valley Mall is a wondrous, novel experience. There's nothing she likes more than eating a hot dog, playing an arcade game, or making a store's automatic doorbell go off.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Literally everything is new and exciting to her.
  • Nice Girl: She'll lead people into sin if she's told to do so, but she's cheerful and personable to everyone.
  • No Social Skills: She regularly freaks people out by asking them odd questions or staring at them.
  • Sixth Ranger: Fifth ranger, actually, but she still fills the archetype. At first, it's by force, as Hell sends her up to replace Hornblas against the others' protests, but she gradually befriends the others, with Misroch being the last to come around. By the end of the first season, Belzagor breaks her out of the bellows and takes her along, and she even gets to sing with the band!
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Hot dogs. Specifically, Misroch's hot dogs.
  • The Watson: She often asks questions the audience would have, such as what sin coins are and how they work.

    Satan

The head honcho, the fallen angel. You may have heard of her. Voiced by Caitlyn Jones.

  • Affably Evil: She's perfectly friendly to her subordinates.
  • Gender Flip: Satan is female (or at least female-presenting) in this setting.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She spares the gang at the end of the first season despite Hornblas' apparent absence, since he did summon all the demons like he promised and that's what really matters.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Plain buttered noodles, much to Misroch's annoyance.
  • Unseen No More: Her much-awaited debut finally came in the first season finale.

    Carpasinus

A demon in charge of managing all the demons currently on Earth, which makes him the gang's direct superior. Voiced by Christopher Trindade.

  • The Dreaded: The gang is clearly intimidated by him and desperate to remain on his good side.
  • Jerkass: He makes Misroch look pleasant.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As he points out, he has over nine thousand demons to manage on Earth; he can't be reasonably expected to keep track of every specific one's location at every single moment.

    Mammon

One of the seven princes of Hell.

  • Non-Human Non-Binary: The other characters refer to him as "her" or "him" interchangeably, suggesting she's genderfluid or, like Misroch, agender.
  • She Is the King: Sort of. She has the title of "prince," but uses both she/her and he/him pronouns, implying her to be genderless or otherwise non-binary.

Earth

    Trainee

Misroch's teenaged employee at Weiner World. Voiced by Regina Renée Russell.

  • Ascended Fangirl: An occult-loving goth girl who goes from trying to summon demons, to hanging out with them, to becoming one herself.
  • Bad Job, Worse Uniform: The worst part of working at Weiner World for her, besides putting up with Misroch, is the weiner-shaped hat they make her wear.
  • Companion Cube: She's very protective of her Tamagotchi.
  • Demon of Human Origin: She sells her soul to Mannon and becomes a demon at the end of the first season.
  • Friendless Background: An unfortunate side effect of moving several times.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She moved around a lot growing up and has never had a solid social group, leading her to put up with Damien and Raven for the sake of having someone to hang out with. When asked what she intends to do if the demon-summoning ritual works, she says that she'd just ask the demon to hang out with her and talk with them. When she becomes a demon at the end of the first season, it's hard to tell how much of it is due to her Perky Goth sensibilities, and how much of it is just wanting to be included.
  • Informed Judaism: She's mentioned to be Jewish when Belzagor asks why she can work on Christmas, but has made no other references to her faith.
  • Nice Girl: Moments of (totally justified) sarcasm towards Misroch aside, she's a kind and friendly person.
  • No Name Given: Not for a lack of trying on her part.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Everyone calls her "Trainee," and whenever she tries to reveal her name, she's interrupted.
  • Only Sane Man: Often ends up being this, since Misroch is a demon with an ego and Damien and Raven are pretentious douchebags.
  • Perky Goth: She's a talkative, easygoing teenage girl who wears pentagram jewelry and tries to summon demons.
  • Valley Girl: Has the speech patterns, but it's subverted as she's actually a Perky Goth.

    Trent

A Hot Topic employee who catches Asmoraius' eye. Voiced by Christopher Trindade.

  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He can't resist helping someone in need.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Polo shirts. Multiple polo shirts. The man once wore three polo shirts at once. Asmoraius is at a loss.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He's introduced rushing into a bunch of smoke to save some kids.
  • Love Across Battlelines: He, an angel, is in love with Asmoraius, a demon. Though neither of them are aware of the other's true nature until the end of the first season.
  • Nice Guy: He's unfailingly generous, optimistic, and kind. Makes sense, given he's an angel.
    Asmoraius: You're too kind.
Trent: That's what I've been told.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he finds out Asmoraius knows Hornblas, meaning he's likely a demon, and thus in the line of fire for the Reckoning.
  • Straight Gay: He's into men, but shows no stereotypical traits.
  • Walking Spoiler: There's a very big twist related to him in the first season finale.
  • Winged Humanoid: He's actually an angel, with a pair of big, white wings that he normally keeps hidden.

    Damien and Raven

Two obnoxious goth teenagers who hang around the mall. Voiced by Christopher Trindade and Jordan Cobb.

  • All Women Are Lustful: Raven hopes to summon a lust demon to be her boyfriend.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Like Trainee, they're demon-obsessed goths who become demons themselves.
  • Demon of Human Origin: In the first season finale, they, along with Trainee, sell their souls to Mannon and become demons.
  • Emo Teen: They try to be, but they're definitely more "whiny" than "emo."
  • Jerkasses: They're generally insufferable and rude to everyone.
  • Goth: A merciless parody of the stereotype.
  • Meaningful Name: Their given names are references to Mikey Way and Courtney Love, two musicians associated with the goth/alternative scene.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Damien" and "Raven" are names they picked out because they sounded "more goth." Their actual names are Mikey and Courtney.
  • With Friends Like These...: They're only marginally nicer to each other than they are to everyone else.
