Bakugan: Battle Brawlers 2009 Video Game

    Player
Voiced by: Lyon Smith (EN)
The protagonist of the 2009 video game and a relatively new player to the game of Bakugan. Though he is not a member of the Battle Brawlers at first, he becomes involved in their activities. His Guardian Bakugan is Leonidas.
  • Blood Knight: Though not as pronounced as Leonidas, who is always eager to lay the smackdown on any Bakugan that gets in his way, the player's initial motivation for playing Bakugan was to become the strongest. This fades when he learns about Leonidas' origins and the introduction of Marduk.
  • Canon Name: According to the game's factsheet, he was originally going to be named Rikku.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: If the player's chosen Attribute is Darkus, he is easily the most heroic Darkus Brawler, in contrast to other users like Marduk or Masquerade.
  • Dork Knight: He has his moments. He's incredibly excited to meet Dan, who is one of the best Bakugan Brawlers in the game, and rather than be shocked or maybe terrified of meeting Leonidas, who appeared in front of him seemingly out of nowhere, he's instead gleeful and immediately asks Leonidas if he wants to become his partner.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: When the player first gets Leonidas, the Bakugan's fiery temper and aggressive manner typically makes others suspicious and wary of them, with Marucho at one point becoming quite suspicious of Leonidas when Runo reveals that no one, not even the Bakugan, know who Leonidas is. When Dan is defeated by an unknown Brawler with a supposedly aggressive nature, Julie is the first to point fingers. Even when Marduk reveals himself to be the one responsible for Dan's defeat, people still don't trust the player or Leonidas, as Leonidas was born in the Doom Dimension.
  • Light Is Good: When the game was still being developed, it was stated that he was originally going to be a Haos Brawler like Runo instead of letting the player pick their own Attribute, possibly to help serve as a Foil to Marduk, who is a Darkus Brawler. This is also supported by the illustration of Leonidas' Character Card, which depicts Leonidas as a Haos Bakugan regardless of which Attribute the player chose at the start of the game. This tropes still applies if the player chooses Haos as their Attribute.
  • Master of All: The player can use any Bakugan of any Attribute, even the other Guardian Bakugan like Drago and Tigrerra, possibly even better than their Brawlers can. Their choosing of an Attribute at the start of the game only affects the Attribute of their starting Bakugan in the console version (in the DS version, the player's starting Bakugan will always consist of a Pyrus Serpenoid, a Subterra Saurus, a Ventus Falconeer and an Aquos Juggernoid regardless of which Attribute the player chose), and which Attribute Leonidas belongs to.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's usually the Blue Oni to Leonidas' Red Oni, being the more level-headed of the two.
  • The Rival: He's seen as this by Marduk, following their defeat at his and Leonidas' hands after the end of the Battle Royal Tournament.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: At the start of the game, he's rather new to Bakugan and doesn't know the rules until Dan personally teaches him. As the game progresses, though, he quickly becomes one of the best Brawlers in the game and beats the original Battle Brawlers, as well as Masquerade at one point.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Quite a few characters in the game don't think much of the player or his abilities. This in spite of the fact that they have defeated some of the best Brawlers in the world, as well as a few of the Battle Brawlers themselves.
  • Virtual Paper Doll: Some features like the eyes and nose can't be altered after the game is started, but for the most part, the player's hair and clothes can be customized to your liking.

    Marduk

I'm Marduk, the greatest brawler in the world. How about we have a little battle, mano a mano?
The main antagonist of the 2009 Video Game. He makes his first appearance during the Battle Royal Tournament after the Player defeats Julie and other Brawlers. His Guardian Bakugan is Vladitor.
  • Anime Hair: His hair looks normal, but some of his hair is crimson while the rest of it is either teal or silver.
  • Blood Knight: He's eager to fight any Brawler who can pose a challenge, no matter who they are. Even when Vladitor dies, he's still willing to fight, though not with as much force or gusto as he once had.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's dressed in dark clothing and his partner is a Darkus Bakugan. He's also the main antagonist of the game.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Vladitor dies, being unable to handle the power of the Silent Orb and from his wounds, Marduk, while ultimately willing to fight anyone, takes up the player's offer of friendship. Post game, he can fight alongside the Player.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: He ranks right up there with Masquerade, as his first act was to brutally beat Dan and Drago in a match. And like other antagonists in the series, he wears a mask, though his only covers the upper left half of his face.
  • Only Friend: Becomes apparent that Vladitor was pretty much the only person Marduk could ever truly call his friend. In fact, when Vladitor dies, he becomes disheartened and begs Vladitor not to leave him.
  • The Rival: He sees himself as this to the Player, one of the few people who was ever to beat him and Vladitor.

    Leonidas

If I battle with you, I'll have the chance to beat other Bakugan?
The Guardian Bakugan of the Player Character. Unlike other Bakugan, who were all born from Code Eve, Leonidas was born from the anger and hatred of the Bakugan lost in the Doom Dimension. His evolved form is Omega Leonidas.
  • Back from the Dead: He and Vladitor both perish, succumbing to their wounds. However, before either could fully disappear, Vladitor gave Leonidas what little power he had left and allowed him to return to the player.
  • Blood Knight: In-Universe, he's known by other Bakugan for being very aggressive. The only reason he accepted becoming the Player's Guardian Bakugan was because he knew he could only unleash his full power in a Bakugan Battle, and wanted to fight other Bakugan. The reason behind his aggression was because he was taking out his anger against other Bakugan because he was born in the Doom Dimension, not Vestroia.
  • Character Development: As the game’s story progresses, he slowly learns to open up to other people besides the player and becomes a bit less agressive. He still retains his Blood Knight tendencies, but he’s still less agressive nonetheless. By the end of the game, he’s learned the value of friendship and is glad to call the player character his partner.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At the start of the game, Leonidas has a hot-temper and fights aggressively to the point where everyone is suspicious and wary of him. Only the Player trusts him. His abrasive attitude eventually fades when the player says he still trusts him and considers him his partner, despite learning of his origins.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: When Vladitor evolves into Battle Ax Vladitor by absorbing the Silent Core and transports all the Bakugan and their Brawlers to the Doom Dimension, everyone is considerably weakened, all except for the Player and Leonidas, the latter having been born in the Doom Dimension. In order to give him a fighting chance, the other Guardian Bakugan give Leonidas a portion of their powers, allowing him to evolve into Omega Leonidas.
  • The Heartless: According to himself, anyway. He describes himself as being born from the anger, hatred and despair of the Bakugan trapped in the Doom Dimension.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: At first, Leonidas' late arrival on Earth is cause for suspicion, with Marucho speculating that he has other goals in mind. Later, because of his Blood Knight tendencies, Julie accuses him and the Player of being the ones attacking Dan, since supposedly the Bakugan who defeated Drago was said to be very aggressive. Even after Marduk reveals himself and claims that he's the one who defeated Dan, the Battle Brawlers still can't trust Leonidas when they learn from Marduk and Vladitor that Leonidas was born from the anger and hatred of the lost Bakugan of the Doom Dimension.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: His reason for attacking other Bakugan so aggressively? He's actually ashamed of the origins behind his birth. Unlike the other Bakugan, who were created by Code Eve and born in Vestroia, he was born from the collective anger and hatred of the Bakugan who fell into the Doom Dimension.
  • Light Is Not Good: If his Character Card illustration and the fact that the Player was originally intended to be a Haos Bakugan user is to be taken as canon, Leonidas is a Haos Bakugan despite his Attribute being the same as the one players choose at the start of the game. The trope can still apply if the player chooses the Haos attribute. He's also noted to battle rather aggressively and looks down on anyone he considers weak. This mentality eventually fades when he realizes just how much the player trusts him and by the end of the game's story, he's unambiguously on the side of good causing this trope to become averted.
    • Dark Is Not Evil: Alternatively, if the player chooses the Darkus Attribute, and therefore make Leonidas into a Darkus Bakugan, then while abrasive and a Blood Knight on top of being a giant angry black dragon to boot, Leonidas is still one of the good guys.
  • Meaningful Name: Leonidas' name comes from the Spartan King of the same name from Ancient Greece. Fitting, given that Sparta was something of a Blood Knight country. His evolved form adds the word "Omega" to his name. "Omega" is the last letter of the Greek Alphabet, and is often used to signify some sort of end. More specifically, the end of Battle Ax Vladitor. Also, Battle Ax Vladitor’s name in the French version of the game is “Alpha Vladitor”, so Leonidas getting “Omega” in his names when he evolves further highlights the opposing nature and rivalry between Leonidas and Vladitor, as in Alpha versus Omega.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: By Bakugan standards, he is not a Dragonoid, but he certainly looks like one.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red oni to the player’s blue oni. Though they both share Blood Knight tendencies, the player is usually the more level-headed of the two, while Leonidas is more aggressive and wild.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By the end of the story, he’s learned the value of friendship and teamwork and he’s less agressive and cold towards other people. He still retains his agressive Blood Knight tendencies, but he’s adopted a more heroic attitude thanks to the player’s influence.

    Vladitor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vladitor_darkus_ds00png.png
I am Vladitor, the lord of all Bakugan. The Doom Dimension awaits all who defy me!
A powerful and tyrannical Bakugan who reigned rampant in Vestroia before he was banished to the Doom Dimension. When Naga tried to take the power of the Silent Core, he was released and found his way to Earth, becoming the Guardian Bakugan of Marduk. His evolved form is Battle Ax Vladitor.
  • Badass Boast: While there have been many villains who have made similar claims, Vladitor is one of the few who can back that boast up. Offscreen, he and Marduk demonstrated their prowess by kicking the shit out of Dan and Drago, and in brutal fashion if Julie and the others are to be believed.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's surrounded by a malevolent dark aura when first introduced, a Darkus Bakugan, and he's was apparently evil enough for the forces of Vestroia to banish to the Doom Dimension — an honor that hasn't been given to any Bakugan shown in the series so far.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Considering that the name of his evolved form is “Battle Ax Vladitor”, it's kind of to be expected that he'd forgo his bare fists for a giant ax. Averted in the French version, where his evolved form is instead named “Alpha Vladitor”.
  • Meaningful Name: In the French version, His evolved form is not named “Battle Ax Vladitor”, but rather “Alpha Vladitor”, to oppose the Omega of Omega Leonidas.
  • Only Friend: He's this to Marduk. The latter sounds like he's in tears by the prospect that Vladitor might actually die and is begging for him not to go. Similarly, Vladitor himself sounds remorseful that he can't be with Marduk anymore as his body is fading.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes, and he was dangerous enough for someone or something in Vestroia to be sent packing to the Doom Dimension.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Before the start of the game, he was a ruthless and powerful Bakugan who was eventually banished by an unknown party to the Doom Dimension. Naga taking (and failing) to take control of the Silent Core broke the seal on his prison and allowed for him to escape.
  • Villainous Rescue: Before he and Leonidas could perish and succumb to their wounds, Vladitor gave what little energy he had left to return to the player's side.
  • We Can Rule Together: Vladitor doesn't care much about other Bakugan, as he deems even Drago to be a weakling before him, a fact that isn't without warrant since he defeated him. However, Vladitor finds Leonidas to be different and even offers him a place at his side, as he knows full well that Leonidas was born from the anger and hatred of the Bakugan who fell to the Doom Dimension.
