    Alice Heart

Alice Heart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1568324949_aatn_cast_alice.png

Alice Heart is Queen Rougina's protegee. She has lived most of her life in the Heart Church and has recently moved to attend Phantasmagoria University in order to become an oneironaut. Her Traumen Mark is in her pupils.

  • Adaptational Curves: When the comic was rebooted, Alice went from being mildly above average size to a Big Beautiful Woman.
  • Alice Allusion: The entire plot is based on Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass and, being named "Alice" in setting like this, it sort of comes with the territory.
  • Ambiguously Human: There are hints that Alice is a human that started turning into a Jabberwocky after falling into Wonderland that Rougina stabilized somehow. Unlike most examples of this trope, it's the "human" option that's the most interesting and fascinating. It's ultimately revealed that she's not a human, but not a suit either. Her mother is Rougina, a Queen.
  • Amnesia Missed a Spot: She can't remember her sister, but when she finds a music box that plays music that resonates with the person who's listening, it plays a song that they used to listen to together, causing her to feel like she's missing someone.
  • Angel Unaware: Rougina, when cornered, tells her she's a would-be Queen, a Goddess, basically. The revelation, coupled with everything else causes her to start Laughing Mad (in tears).
  • Apocalypse Maiden: When around dream sand, which powers and flows through everything in Wonderland, she subconsciously attracts nightmares, which gets worse the more emotional she is.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Alice is a tad on the heavy side, and she's noted to be quite beautiful.
  • Color Motif: Her eyes (when she's not angry) are pink, and so are most of her outfits.
  • Cute Little Fangs: They only appear when she's emotional, but they're there. It seems to come from her part-nightmare nature. A flashback shows that she had them fulltime as a child.
  • Dream-Crushing Handicap: Alice wanted to attent Phantasmagoria, get friends, and become a Joker so she could see the world. This dream is put to an end by her unique nature, which spawns and attracts nightmares when she's around dreamsand, which oneironauts like the Jokers work with.
  • Emotion Control: She is a Heart. That gives her the ability to control Dreamer's emotions.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Her unique traumen mark are in her eyes, giving her heart-shaped pupils.
  • Fictional Disability: Something about Alice's unique nature causes her to attract and spawn nightmares out of dreamsand. Since dreamsand is everywhere in Wonderland, this is akin to a crippling disability.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Alice is a Spoiled Sweet blondie who's kind everyone that doesn't make her mad.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: In Chapter 5, Alice accidentally falls asleep and has a sudden encounter with a separate, Nightmare-like version of herself, who has popped in and out at random times throughout the story. Nightmarish Alice tells Alice that she missed her and wants to be with her, at which point Alice bursts into tears, saying she just wants to live a normal life without Nightmarish Alice ruining it for her.
  • Innocently Insensitive: After hearing that Edith is lonely because she spent most of her life studying to get into Phantasmagoria rather than socializing, Alice says she doesn't have a good social life either and she's happy that they're so similar. Edith clearly doesn't appreciat that Alice, the queen's protégée, thinks she is the same as Edith, who's from a poor family barely scraping by, but Alice clearly didn't mean anything wrong with it.
  • I See Dead People: After Hatter kisses her, she starts seeing ghost cats as well.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: For whatever reason she doesn't remember her sister, despite having spent their childhoods together.
  • Laughing Mad: She has a tendency of laughing when in emotional distress, first when Hatter tells her that the Underground is getting sealed, and again after going through a Trauma Conga Line all of chapter 9 and being given a Wham Line by Rougina, when she starts laughing hysterically on the brink of of a nervious collapse, barely holding back tears.
  • Nice Gal: Alice is the queen's protege and has been raised with no friends, but all provided, yet is extremely nice to everyone and completely ignores Fantastic Racism.
  • Older Than They Look: Alice looks like (and thinks she is) 18 years old. She was actually born before the Cataclysm, which would mean she's actually over 125 years old.
  • Raised by the Community: Basedon various scattered accounts from her childhood, Alice appears to have been raised in part by the sisters of the Heart church, part by Rougina, and part by Azalea.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: She is Rougina's daughter, and a would-be Queen.
  • Recurring Dreams: Alice frequently experiences dreams of a nightmarish red tree, and occaisonally sees a nightmare version of herself. This is notable because suits like Alice aren't supposed to have dreams.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Alice's pupils turn red when she gets angry. A sign of her Superpowered Evil Side.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Having been raised in the Heart Church as Rougina's ward, Alice has a poor grasp of what life is like for a normal suit. Among other things, she has no idea that trains don't run at all hours, and she thought a singular banana cost 10 dollars.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Alice haven't had much contact with others before her arrival in Phanty U, and sometimes it shows - especially when the Girl Posse latches onto her.
  • Squee: After overhearing Edith calling her her friend, she squees loud enough that she almost gets caught.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Inverted. Alice is a short, thick, blonde girl, while her mother, Rougina, is tall, lithe, and has red hair. The only real similarity is their fair skin color and red eyes.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Alice seems to have something like his - whenever she's angry, she gets wide-eyed and starts spilling red dust around. It's implied that medicine she takes daily keeps it at bay. Interestingly, she starts looking a lot more like The Nightmare when this happens.
  • Survival Mantra: "I'll be okay". Whenever she says it it's a surefire sign that she is not okay.

    The Nightmare (Spoilers)

Mimzy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skjermbilde_2022_12_26_133010.jpg
"I've missed you so much, Alice"

A figure Alice often sees in her hallucinations and "dreams". It's eventually revealed that the Nightmare is Alice's twin sister, Mimzy, but she has forgotten them and doesn't start seeing them properly again for years.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear exactly how she was born, as Rougina only gave birth to Alice. When she left her alone for a second, Mimzy seems to have spontaneously spawned from her.
  • Berserk Button: She does not take well to the idea that she's not real.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Subverted. She has red eyes with black sclera similar to suits infected by Jabberwocky sepsis, but she is a good person.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She looks pretty horrifying, with fangs and Black Eyes of Crazy, but she is actually a very nice and friendly girl who's very excited to meet her sister.
  • Invisible to Normals: The Nightmare only appears to Alice, and disappears when anyone else is around.
  • Mirror Monster: Outside of dreams, the Nightmare can appear to Alice in reflective surfaces, though Alice doesn't notice her. When they were children, she appeared as her own person, until Alice pushed her through a mirror during a tantrum.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: The Nightmare only appears to Alice, and Alice talked to her as a child, though she can't remember, but she is certainly real.
  • Only Friend: Used to be this to Alice when they were children. Then Alice forgot them for years, and when they start talking again their relationship is rather strained.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: She's not evil, but Alice starts to take on her traits when she's angry, including glowing red eyes and fangs.

    Edith Diamant

Edith Diamant

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1568325007_aatn_cast_edith.png

Edith Diamant is Alice's roommate. She is a shy girl from the lowest social class, and her mother is a diamond. Her Traumen Mark is on the back of her neck.

  • Animal Motif: She has a hair ribbon that looks like rabbit ears and is easily scared. The author stated clearly that she's the story's equivalent to White Rabbit. Her code name in the underground market is even Rabbit.
  • Color Motif: She dresses primarily in blue and she has blue eyes.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Her powers are dangerous to use and her mother warns her against using them for unknown reasons.
  • Doorstop Baby: Edith reveals that she - and her siblings - are adopted in Chapter 5, and Edith was left on her adopted mother's doorstep. She never knew her biological parents.
  • The Fashionista: She loves fashion and states that if she wasn't studying to be an oneironaut, she'd work with designing clothes.
  • Happily Adopted: Shown to get along very well with the woman who took her in when she was a baby.
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: Being a Diamond, she can create objects in the Dreamscape. However, any object requires a deep focus on it in order to bring it into fruition.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Edith enjoys fashion and other "girly" hobbies, and her style is quite feminine, and Word of Gay confims that she is lesbian.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Edith's mother has a lot of adopted kids, so Edith has a lot of siblings. Current number is six younger siblings and three older siblings.
  • Meaningful Name: "Diamant" is Norwegian for "Diamond", which is what she is.
  • Power of the Void: Not confirmed, but it's speculated by some readers that her white magic might work by manipulating The Nothing. Dee reveals it's because she's a reverse suit.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: She has dark blue hair and she's much more timid and introverted compared to the cheerful and social Alice.

    Mabel Klover

Mabel Klover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1568325014_aatn_cast_mabel.png

Mabel Klover is an assistant working in the campus library. She shares a Dream Simulation class with Alice and Edith, and is an optimistic intellectual girl. Her Traumen Mark is on the back of her right hand.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: In Chapter 6, after a Nightmare sprouts during the Dream Simulation, Mabel gets bitten by a Nightmare while trying to protect Alice - this is made even worse by a very gruesome transformation, on-screen. Poor Mabel.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair and knows her way around the library well.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Protects Alice both before and after turning into a Nightmare.
  • Attackits Weak Point: The nightmare bites her right on her traumen mark, causing the infection to reach the wonder anchor instantly and turn her into a nightmare on the spot.
  • It Can Think: Appears to retain her sentience and sense of self due to not only saving Alice but start crying after her transformation.
  • Kill the Cutie: When Mabel transforms into a Nightmare, the Jokers execute her not long after she finished off the Nightmare who bit her. To make matters worse, this all happened while she was crying over her transformation, and Alice has no choice but to sit and watch her friend die. This is subverted however in Chapter 9 when it's revealed that Jabberwock Mabel wasn't killed, merely captured and given over by Rougina to Obsidian, apparently leader of the Jabberwocks, as part of some secret arrangement.
  • Precocious Crush: Downplayed since she's not that young, but she has a crush on Dee and Dum, the dream sim teachers. Who happen to be Edith's siblings.

    Elsie, Tillie, and Lacie

Elsie, Tillie, and Lacie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skjermbilde_2022_12_26_031034.jpg

A trio of Phantasmagoria students who "befriend" Alice on the first day. Lacie is the black girl, Elsie has short hair, and Tillie has long hair.

  • Ambiguously Brown: While Lacia is clearly black and Elsie is white, Tillie is somewhere inbetween, with the artstyle making it difficult to determine if she's meant to parallel any particular human ethnicity.
  • The Dividual: They almost always appear together. Lacie lampshades this when she runs into Alice alone, pointing out that they do exist independently of each other.
  • Fantastic Racism: They all think Alice is too good to room with a Diamond, and are part of the students who discriminate against Edith. Elsie later tells Alice that this is not just because Edith is a diamond, but because she's a "new" diamond, compared to most diamond Phantasmagoria student whom they've known for years.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Elsie, according to the Alt Text, lurks conspiracy blogs. She believes that Rougina's Vorpal Sword, which the last pieces of are said to still be hidden in Rougina's possession, has been lost completely (especially since Alice has never seen it). Not only that, she believes Rougina isn't as powerful as most would believe, that there's no way she could still be alive without Bianchia, that the moon is fake, that Rougina is actually a collective hallucination everyone's been imagining, and so on.
  • Girl Posse: Of the mean girls variety, the three of them cling to Alice on her first day and being openly racist towards Edith.

Government

    Rougina Kralovna

Rougina Kralovna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1568325045_aatn_cast_rougina.png

The infamous Red Queen and Alice's guardian. She rules over Wonderland and the Looking Glass Territories with an iron fist in a lace glove.

  • Abusive Parents: She is Alice's guardian and biological mother, and her first scene does not paint a pretty picture, showing that she is at the very least emotionally abusive in how she degrades Alice, subtly calling her stupid and annoying and overall tearing down her confidence.
  • Ambiguously Evil: She is certainly framed as evil a lot of times, her first appearance framing her as an Abusive Mom, ominously telling Azalea that they have a lot to do, having made a Deal with the Devil, and appearing in a lot of non-canon illustrations as a very ominous figure. At the same time, she seems to genuinely care about Alice, and she's held as a beloved ruler by most of Wonderland.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her relationship to Azalea comes across as a bit closer than just lady and confidant.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In chapter 10, she's struck by something coming out of Obsidian's mirror which turns her eyes black, progresses her infection, and suddenly turns her hostile towards Alice. While this seems to imply some kind of Demonic Possession or The Corruption, she also seems to still act like herself, only more aggressive and controlling, which is not entirely out of character for her, making it unclear exactly what is going on.
  • BFS: Her Vorpal Sword is a massive broadsword, though only the broken off hilt remains.
  • Cain and Abel: While it can be debated if they count as sisters, she and Bianchia initially waged an endless war, until the appearance of the Dream Spring and the jabberwocky forced them to put aside their differences and work together to defend the world.
  • The Corruption: She has a black pattern spreading in veins from her chest, her back, and her left eye. What it is is unclear, but it may have to do with Obsidian.
  • Creator Deity: She, along with her counterpart the White Queen, are the creators of all life in Wonderland.
  • Deal with the Devil: She appears to have made some kind of deal with Obsidian to protect Alice. The deal requires her to have trinkets destroyed, claiming that they attract jabberwocky.
  • Horned Humanoid: She has crystaline horns growing out of her head, which she covers up with her hair. They used to be full antlers, but were broken of in the Nightmare Cataclysm. She used to have a third horn in her forehead, but it was completely broken of, leaving only a scar.
  • Human Resources: The potions Alice takes to stabilize her condition appear to be made at least in part from Rougina's blood.
  • Mama Bear: During Alice's midterm exams, when Alice accidentally summons a dome full of nightmares, Rougina immediately jumps into the room, grabs Alice, and kills every single nightmare.
  • My Beloved Smother: To the reader, it's very clear that Rougina is using all the classic manipulation tactics ("What would you do without me?" "I only do this because I love you!") to keep Alice dancing to her tune.
  • Parents as People: She does love Alice, having taken part in raising her, scheduling meetings so they can catch up while she's attending Phantasmagoria, allowed her to attend the university at all despite knowing that her condition made it dangerous, made a Deal with the Devil to protect her, and assures her and her sister that they were born perfect. She is unfortunately very bad at expressing this, and often comes across as degrading and strict as a result.
  • Time Abyss: She is supposedly older than the entire Wonderland world.
  • Tough Leader Façade: Inverted. Alice notices that she's a very different person in her public appearances than in private. However, the difference is that her public appearances cast her as a kind and encouraging matron, whereas she is much harsher in private.
  • Unusual Ears: While normal suits have human ears, Rougina and Bianchia have ears more resembling those of deer. According to the Alt Text, they express emotions through the movement of their ears.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: She used to be able to shapeshift at will, but has since lost that ability.

    Azalea Joker

Azalea Joker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1576567458_aatn_cast_azalea.png

Rougina's right-hand woman and the one responsible for the other kingdom's duties.

  • The Confidant: Rougina trusts her more than her other subordinates and she's privvy to secrets not even Alice, Rougina's protege, know about.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: All the top Jokers have hair dyed according to their suit. Azalea, a Heart suit, has pink hair.
  • Healing Hands: Her Wonder is strong enough to work in the real world, and she can use it to heal injuries. When Alice was a child, Azalea was called over to heal Alice anytime she was seriously injured.
  • The Stoic: Her expression rarely changes, remaining calm and composed.

    Bianchia

Queen Bianchia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skjermbilde_2022_12_26_022300.jpg

The White Queen and Rougina's counterpart. Long dead.

  • Cain and Abel: It can be argued wether they truly count as sisters, but her and Rougina spent their early existence fighting an endless war before uniting to defend their world against nightmares.
  • Creator Deity: She and her counterpart Rougina created life in Wonderland.
  • Fisher Queen: She apparently had some connection to the cats of Wonderland, as there were apparently a lot more before she died.
  • Horned Humanoid: She had white moose antlers, to go with her counterpart's deer antlers.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: When she was alive, she wielded the Vorpal Shield in defense of Wonderland.
  • Posthumous Character: Bianchia died a 125 years before the present, in a massive incursion of jabberwocky known as the Nightmare Cataclysm.
  • Time Abyss: She and Rougina are supposedly older than all of Wonderland.
  • Unusual Ears: While normal suits have human ears, Rougina and Bianchia have ears more resembling those of deer. According to the Alt Text, they express emotions through the movement of their ears.

    Obsidian (Spoilers)

Obsidian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1667274932_ch9pg49.png

A mysterious being that Rougina has some kind of deal with.

  • The Assimilator: It "takes" red-eyed jabberwocky and turns them into white-eyed ones, and it's revealed that its full form is made up of thousands such jabberwocky.
  • Deal with the Devil: Rougina has made a deal with it, but exactly what it entails is unclear. The known terms are that Obsidian take the red-eyed nightmares, that it stays hidden, and don't hurt Alice. It also demands that Rougina have trinkets destroyed.
  • Ominous Obsidian Ooze: Appears as a semi-liquid black goop with white markings.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to discuss it without revealing a lot about the nature of jabberwocky and Rougina.

The Underground

    Hatter DiMenthia

Hatter DiMenthia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1568325037_aatn_cast_hatter.png

A trader in trinkets who often hangs around Phantasmagoria to sell them.

  • Blatant Lies: When Alice asks if the person he has a close selfie with is his ..., he interrupts and calls them his neighbour down the road.
  • Fairytale Motifs: He's the Mad Hatter of the original Alice tale.
  • Friend in the Black Market: He's a trinket trader, an illegal trade in Wonderland, and frequently sells to the students at Phantasmagoria.
  • The Gadfly: When Alice introduces herself as Rougina's protégée, Hatter acts like he doesn't know who Rougina is.
  • Green Thumb: If nothing else, he can at least grow Floraphones, flowers that function and look like phones.
  • I See Dead People: He sees cat ghosts.
  • Nice Guy: He's a bit of a troll, but is otherwise a nice guy who gladly takes Alice on a trip through the Underground and tells her the truth about trinkets for no reason other than being nice.
  • Pungeon Master: He enjoys throwing out puns, which always make Alice laugh.
  • Serious Business: He nearly collapses in shock when Edith and Alice admit they haven't heard of oolong tea.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Apparently he is deathly allergic to lillies.

    Quinn Lepicas

Quinn Lepicas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1619198953_quinn_cast.png
"How dare."

A friend of Hatter who helps out in the tea-and-trinket shop he runs.

  • Official Couple: She asks out Edith in chapter 8.
  • The Stoic: Not quite to the degree of Azalea since she does emote, but she generally has a neutral expression and replies to Hatter's eccentricities with dry wit.

    Whitley Koaval

Whitley Koaval

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1619198474_whitley_cast.png

The stuttering repairman of Hatter's trinket shop. The only white chessman in Wonderland.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: His job at the trinket shop is to repair broken trinkets.
  • Speech Impediment: He stutters.
  • Token Non-Human: So far he's the only Suit of the main cast, aside from Rougina. He's a White Chessman, a soldier created by the white queen.
  • Unusual Ears: Like Queens, chessmen's ears are more deer-like than human.
