"DO IT, BROLY!!!"

Pre-Release

  • Just the fact this movie gets created and that it's under the banner of Super instead of Z. The teaser already shows some amazing animation by showing how smoothly Goku moves during his warm-up to face against a mysterious opponent with a green aura.
  • Trailer 1:
    • After months of speculation about who the movie's villain is. Ranging from a new character to a pre-existent one (Yamoshi, the original Super Saiyan (god) primarily being theorized). It turns out it's none other than BROLY, the original Legendary Super Saiyan. Base-Breaking Character aside, it's still amazing that a movie villain became a Canon Immigrant and opens the door to many more characters becoming Canon Immigrants. It's also confirmed that Toriyama himself has written and rehashed Broly's character into something more relatable and interesting, instead of the Generic Doomsday Villain he was in the original movie.
    • It also shows Broly fighting against Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza in his base form and pretty much overwhelming them. Then, his transformation into a Super Saiyan makes Goku scared (absent from the movie).
  • Trailer 2: This trailer shows some backstory by King Cold's subjugation of the Saiyans, King Vegeta looking proudly at his son's power, Broly being sent to Vampa with Paragus chasing after him, and Bardock sending Kakarot to Earth before his doomed Last Stand against Frieza.
  • Trailer 3: This trailer shows some great action, complete with Blizzard playing in the background.
    • Broly remaking some of the famous scenes from the original Broly movie by slamming Goku's head against an iceberg while running and his iconic transformation into the Legendary Super Saiyan.
    • Broly No Sells a punch to the face from Super Saiyan God Vegeta, which only pisses him off.
    • One of Broly's attacks is a massive ball of energy, which looks absolutely amazing.
  • Trailer 4: The last trailer throws a major bombshell before the movie even arrived. Three words: "We are Gogeta." He then faces off against Super Saiyan Broly and pretty much overwhelms him completely. It feels very much like the opening to Budokai 3, in that regard.

General

  • The animation throughout the movie is outstanding. Not only is everything beautifully animated, but the choreography used throughout the fights is unique and exciting since instead of just having third-person perspectives, they also show first-person perspectives through the battle. This truly gives us more of an image of how intense the fight is.
  • Going along with the amazing animations, special attention must also be paid to this film's transformations. After years and years of Saiyans casually transforming once they've mastered a particular form, the full weight and gravitas of Vegeta going Super Saiyan and Goku going Blue has been brought back in its full glory. Even better, each type of transformation seems to have its own "flavor," with the basic Super Saiyan transformation showcasing its classic rage while the God transformation is much more elegant and subdued.
  • In a series more known for its energy blasts, it's interesting to see Goku and Vegeta pulling out actual martial arts techniques against Broly. Special mention goes to Vegeta showing some Capoeira handstand feints and Goku throwing Broly with a Judo seoi nage so hard that the ground around them cracks to pieces.
  • Pretty much everything about Broly's new power-up, the Wrath Statenote . It's never quite clear if it's a product of his harsh upbringing or some genetic mutation, but it allows him to call upon the power of the Oozaru transformation while retaining his humanoid form (albeit with gold eyes and spiky Super Saiyan-esque hair), and damn, can he ever call on that power. It's clear that he's on a whole other level than any past opponent, and up until they unleash Super Saiyan Blue, it's all Goku and Vegeta can do to keep Wrath State Broly from smashing them flat.
    • That's not all, either. A hyper-powerful transformation that uses the power of the Oozaru, with golden eyes and wild hair? Barring a miracle, this might just be the closest thing we'll ever get to a canon version of Super Saiyan 4.
  • No mention of the soundtrack? While all of the movie's soundtrack is of above average quality, particular note has to go to the music that plays when Goku challenges Broly. Even after counting the shredding guitars and thundering drums, the whole track is backed by what can only be described as a "hype choir," cheering both Goku ("Kakarot!") and Broly on directly. Almost as if they themselves were channeling the desires of the audience, demanding as much violence, intensity, and awesomeness as possible. Go Broly, GO GO! Broly, GO GO GO!

Movie

  • Frieza demonstrates the new scouters to his subordinates by casually vaporizing three hidden Saiyan snipers in the blink of an eye.
    • Some awesome points to the Saiyans: The fact that they had snipers in place and a full blown plan to take out Frieza and Cold if anything went wrong is very admirable.
  • The Saiyans being officially upgraded from an entire race of idiotic Blood Knights to having something that resembles an actual functional society. Complete with mundane jobs like food prep, scientists, engineers, and doctors all of whom aren't treated with open contempt like such professions would be in other series. Of course, every aspect of their society contributes toward their ultimate goal of fighting strong races and conquering planets but it's so refreshing to see.
  • Bardock pulling a Sherlock Scan and figuring out Frieza's plan. Within minutes, he figures out not only what Frieza is planning, but why. His original counterpart would have been as oblivious as the rest of his race if he hadn't received clairvoyant powers. Still, this version is that much more intelligent and logical that he never needed them.
  • Bardock's last-ditch energy blast actually managed to slow down Frieza's Supernova, a feat surpassing what his original depiction was capable of doing, Foe-Tossing Charge aside. Too bad this still couldn't change Planet Vegeta's fate.
  • How about the fact Broly and Paragus actually managed to survive on Planet Vampa for decades, despite the fact the planet only has one source of food, and possibly no source of waternote .
  • Broly's introduction on planetoid Vampa in the present day. When Paragus, Cheelai, and Lemo are attacked by a giant mite, the latter two panic and draw their weapons. Paragus, however, screams Broly's name, and Broly hears this from seemingly miles away, launching himself to his father's position and kicking the monster away in a single hit in less than two seconds. All the while, Cheelai's scouter is locked onto Broly and reads a power level that exceeds the highest number readable by the device—which is indicated to be 99999—even though it is the newest model available.
  • Broly's protectiveness towards Cheelai and Lemo is really highlighted when some drunken goon starts harassing the two of them and becoming belligerent. When Broly sees this, he almost loses it, then pulls himself together, and calmly walks over to the guy. Ignoring his father's order to stand down, Broly places himself between the goon and Cheelai and Lemo to protect them from the idiot, while getting in his face and telling him he has a problem with him, clearly wanting the guy to back off and leave them alone. He doesn't listen, and Broly loses it. While this gives way to showing the horrible power Paragus holds over Broly, it also cements one thing about the man: Threaten those he cares about, and you'll be leaving either strapped to a gurney, or in a body bag.
  • Cheelai's response to Paragus's cruel treatment towards Broly? She steals the remote he uses to control Broly's collar.
Cheelai: Here's what I think about shock treatment. (steps on the remote, smashing it)
  • To showcase Broly's first appearance on Earth. Both Goku and Vegeta already sense him on Frieza's ship and how tremendous his power is, and when Broly leaves the ship, Frieza's men lined up just get blown away by his presence with Goku and Vegeta bracing themselves for it.
  • Vegeta vs. Broly:
    • During their initial fight, Vegeta and Broly are trading blows reasonably evenly. Once they engage in a Brawler Lock, Vegeta begins turning Super Saiyan and overpowers Broly's grip. Broly visibly panics, desperately trying to get his hands away from Vegeta.
Vegeta: This is getting annoying! (headbutts Broly)
    • Props to Broly - despite being initially unable to go Super Saiyan himself, he still engages Super Saiyan Vegeta head-on, taking the latter's blows with irritation, at best. Vegeta has to go Super Saiyan God before Broly starts getting outmatched.
    • And that's when Broly goes Berserker Saiyan. This is a mutant ability to tap into the might of the Great Ape form without actually transforming - or, in other words, combining the Great Ape form's destructive strength with the more agile humanoid body of a Saiyan. The result rivals if not surpasses Godly Ki in its normal state.
  • Super Saiyan (God) Goku vs. Wrathful Broly:
    • Starting off their fight is Goku taking off his jacket and warming up, while Broly bulks up and completes his transformation into his Wrathful form with "Kakarot Vs Broly" playing in the background.
    • During Super Saiyan God Goku's fight against Broly, he managed to restrict Broly using his God Bind technique and attempts to talk some sense into him. But the truly incredible part is Broly breaking free by overriding the method using his own ki, which causes Goku to be restricted instead. This shows that despite his Unstoppable Rage, he's still capable of thinking and countering his opponent. He then punches Goku in the face, but Goku managed to brace himself and shoulder throw Broly in return, which destroys the icy landscape everyone was standing on and forces Frieza's men to flee in the spaceship so that they won't get caught in the crossfire. But ultimately, Broly gains the upper hand over Goku and starts thrashing the ever-loving fuck out of him in a manner that puts the Hulk's smashing of Loki to utter shame.
    • While Goku binds Broly, we see an incredibly slick five-second montage of past major villains, including King Piccolo, Raditz, Vegeta, and all the various forms of Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu, before cutting back to Goku. Goku seems quietly smug about having protected the universe from these many threats, but in comparing Broly to his previous Rogues Gallery, he accurately concludes that Broly is not evil.
  • Super Saiyan Blue Goku vs. Wrathful Broly:
    • As Goku powers up From Super Saiyan (God) to Super Saiyan Blue his hair, eyes, and aura turn silver as he almost manages to activate Ultra Instinct instead, but it doesn't quite stick.
    • It may be short, but Broly and Goku are going absolutely ballistic on each other, trading blow after blow without any signs of slowing down, hurling each other across the landscape, Goku even managing to throw him into a volcano. They fight in the lava before Goku throws him back out as Broly waits for him to come up, before hurling a massive energy bomb at Goku that blows up the entire ice cap and causes the volcanic mountain range under it to explode all at once, transforming the landscape into a Lethal Lava Land. Then Goku comes back for more. Even Broly seemed impressed by that before gunning for him again. As the battle draws to a close Broly starts losing hard, his wild flailing easily dodged and blocked by Goku, who then delivers a charged palm strike that ragdolls him into a cliffside.
    • Check Broly’s reaction just as Goku goes Blue, he’s noticeably taken aback by this and stares in genuine awe at the transformation, before easing back in, cracking a grin and bracing himself. It’s an especially notable thing considering Broly’s state of mind at this point.
    • There’s also the fact that even though Goku outranks him, he’s powerful enough to trade blows with him on even footing, showing that Super Saiyan Blue isn’t that far ahead of him. Considering how well he does, it’s entirely possible that if he refined his fighting skills, he could give even Blue a run for its money.
  • Regarding the massive energy bomb, the ensuing blast comes racing at Frieza, who calmly forms an energy shield around himself. Said explosion glances around the barrier like water around rock.
  • Frieza showing he's still the biggest evil bastard of this series by mercilessly killing Paragus to make Broly transform into a Super Saiyan after remembering how Goku transformed after he killed Krillin. This shows that despite how comical he was earlier, he still is the Evil Overlord everyone knows. Despite backfiring on him later, his plan technically worked since Super Saiyan Broly became more powerful than both Goku and Vegeta fighting together. This also shows how much Frieza's changed (in his own evil way). He's gone from being utterly terrified of the idea of one Super Saiyan to intentionally triggering the transformation of one.
  • Goku and Vegeta tricking Broly into attacking Frieza on-the-fly while Broly was chasing them. This is extra satisfying since Frieza himself caused Broly to transform into a Super Saiyan by killing Paragus, thus also making this some very satisfying karmic payback.
Goku: HAVE FUN, FRIEZA! (both Vegeta and Goku dodge away as a furious Broly bears down on Frieza)
  • After Broly became a Super Saiyan, Goku and Vegeta decided the only way to prevent Broly from destroying the earth is to use Fusion. And with no Potara on hand nor in sight, they had no other choice but to use the Fusion Dance, which means Gogeta has attained Canon Immigrant status himself.
  • You got to give proper respect to Frieza for his massive durability. While Goku and Vegeta were attempting to use the Fusion Dance, Frieza actually managed to survive being Super Saiyan Broly's punching bag for a whole hour. Goku and Vegeta barely survived even a minute, let alone a whole hour.
    • Also worth noting, shortly before Gogeta shows up, Frieza - pounded into the side of a cliff by this point - is actually grinning as he marvels at Broly's power. After all these years, a Saiyan mutant who possibly is or is the closest being to the Legendary Super Saiyan he once feared is standing before him, ready to wreck him hardcore...and he's more impressed than terrified!
  • To get things to play out, Whis helps by "fighting" Broly. All he does is dodge Broly's attacks, yet he does so with complete ease, showing that Universe 7's Angel outclasses even the Saiyan mutant.
    • His apport being limited to only dodging attacks is a case of Fridge Brilliance: Angels, like him, are forbidden to interfere in mortal affairs with the risk being oblivion. He can distract Broly via dodging and prancing between his attacks, because he's not fighting: He's just playing with Broly.
    • A very subtle moment that shows Whis' incredible speed and anticipation, is him quickly backstepping away from Gogeta's Instant Transmission.
  • The final battle no one knew they wanted to happen in canon and was only possible in video games before: Gogeta vs. Broly.
    • Gogeta starts the fight by dodging all of Broly's blast in his Base form. He then transforms into his own Super Saiyan form to counterattack. He is equal in power to Broly, which is saying something since Broly is equal to Gogeta, a fusion of two Saiyans who achieved godhood. But Gogeta still holds the advantage thanks to his superior fighting skills. However, their battle was enough to open a rift into another dimension just in their Super Saiyan forms. To overwhelm Gogeta, Broly transforms into his Super Saiyan Full Power form and manages to overpower Gogeta with it. However, realizing his Super Saiyan form is outmatched, Gogeta responds by transforming into Super Saiyan Blue and manages to overpower and overwhelm Broly entirely in return. The beatdown Gogeta brought upon Broly was enough for the latter to feel fear and regain his sanity; the only reason Broly survived was because of Cheelai's wish to save him.
    • Take a quick look at Broly’s face before he throws a punch at Gogeta, after the latter powers up and charges at him near the end of their fight. He’s visibly terrified. Despite being locked in his blank-eyed Unstoppable Rage at that point, you can see at that moment Gogeta is finally starting to get to him.
