By which I mean, they pick a bunch of interesting premises and completely obliterates them into a boring slog due to stupid decisions completely out of touch with their viewers.
From the getgo, I must say that I have played a throng of Ubisoft games, my favorite being, ironically, Blood Dragon. I actually liked it far more than its original Farcry game and was utterly devastated when Ubisoft decided to gut it to mix with the Trials franchise.
So when I heard it would be the base for a series that pokes fun at Ubisoft, I was skeptical but curious, and when I heard it was made by the French (I love French comedies, but I was mistaken, its *drawn* by French, not written by them, it would have been far better if such was the case) and saw the infamous scene of a coked Rayman eating sushi out of a prostitute cow's body, yeah I had to at least check it out. But most of all, I was weirdly, morbidly curious as to why nearly every single picture of this series depicted Rayman and not said Captain Laserhawk (to a point I nearly wondered if Rayman was said Captain).
I could only withstand two episodes and half before quitting and just reading what happens on Wikipedia.
The best thing that I can say about this series is that A- Its art and visuals are good, B- The references to videogames are cheeky C- It has Carpenter Brut in the soundtrack, Anything is far better with Carpenter Brut and D- Laserhawk himself is shown right from the getgo to be gay, no 'shy handholding' or 'may-or-may-not-be' like many, many other shows dabble with. No, that dude is as straight as a wet noodle and kisses his boyfriend in the first episode. With tongue.
Sadly, everything else is a mess at best. With only six episodes, the series relies heavily on the viewer's caring for the franchise characters that appear because it can't and won't flesh them out before cackling manically and slapping a knockoff Kill Em All sticker so hard Tomino himself cringed from across the globe. Fun fact, for the Anyone Can Die to work, you need to **CARE** for the characters depicted on screen. Except that nearly every single person depicted on screen is an unrepentant asshole, or are nice but die for shock value in the very same episode they are introduced. Except the frog. Being a fusion between Rex Power Colt and Cobra didn't save Laserhawk from feeling like an author pet or insert: He spends most of his time brooding on a corner so hard you can listen to My Chemical Romance if you squint hard enough (don't), grunting and whining about his lost love and telling everyone to fuck off in a way that would make Shadow The Hedgehog jealous. He is also a massive liability that keeps screwing up resulting in character deaths, but won't die himself because of plot armor (he even taunts someone about how they can't get rid of him, except, yes, they can), yet all his team will try to be friends with him, praise him and talk to him about vengeance as if walls could talk back. I know he dies in the end, but frankly, I couldn't care less to finish this mess
Did I mention that this series happens in a cyberpunk bland hellhole of a city, in a fight between megacorp idiots and 'renegades' whose plans make said megacorp goons look SANE and IN THE RIGHT? Like for example unleashing Kaijus on innocent people or turning crowds into murder maniacs, thus giving the spotlight to the defense forces of the megacorp. I can't recall being hit with the Eight Deadly Words so hard than this series.
Its pacing is also seriously messed up, switching from exposition dumps to badly directed action scenes to long overdrawn drama so hard I felt the urge to feed Adderall to my screen. If it had just been the story of Rayman falling from grace and realizing his mistakes and going on a rampage, that would have been awesome. But no, we got this.
And as a last nail to the coffin, when the series played Carpenter Brut, they muffled it. As in, the action music was barely audible during the action. How dare they! Muffling Carpenter Brut is a sin against music! So, sadly, no, just watch the stills and keep going.
WesternAnimation The 'Ubisoft Special' formula.
